1 CELEBRATING 18YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Tampa Bay Chapter- American Singles Golf Association February 2011 GOLF COMMITTEE 2010 Club Championship Rain caused our Dec 12, 2010 Championship outing at Fox Hollow to be rescheduled to Sunday, Jan 9, Forty-eight golfers were greeted by a day perfect for golfing. Our spirits were high and the competition was close. East Lake Woodlands Golf Outing Jan 23, 2011 The Football Conference Championships got in the way of a few golfers, but 33 of us had a beautiful day on the links at East Lake Woodlands (ELW). ELW had lots of prizes for us and they were real easy to work with. Everyone got a discounted invitation to play again at ELW and the following people won Closest-to-the Pin awards of a free round of golf for the cart fee: Larry Harris on #8, Lou Lakatos on #14, and Barbara Hopton on #17; no one hit the green on #4! The Third Place winners were the team of Bill Ketchersid, Sandy Lindberg, John Greene, and Maggie Lewis. Second Place winners were the team of Lou Lakatos, Donna Douglass, Paul Trotta, and Frances Panico. First Place winners were the team of Dick Patton, Edie Senensky, Hunter Dixon, and Barbara Hopton. Mark your calendars now so you won't miss a day of golfing on a remarkable course with beautiful Old Florida scenery. This private course is known for its challenging tree lined fairways. Immediately following our round dinner will be served in the clubhouse. Buckhorn is located at 2721 South Miller Road, Valrico, FL The tee time is scheduled for 1pm with the meal immediately following for only $49. ASGA is checking out the new Cheval Golf Course Sunday, February 20, 2011 we're going to Cheval. The private golf course underwent an extensive renovation in 2008, including new Champions Bermuda greens and completely renovated bunkers. Many of you haven't played Cheval in a while, now's your chance to check out the course. Online or paper form registration is in progress so don't wait too long to sign up. Our tee time is set for 1pm; please arrive at the course no later than 12:30pm, with the total cost of $45. Golf is at Clearwater Golf Club, 525 North Betty Lane, Clearwater Fee is $36 plus tax The Super Bowl party is immediately following golf at Cove Cay Village 1 clubhouse. Cove cay is located at 1900 Cove Cay Drive. Please bring a side dish to share, and you must bring your own beverage. Friday Feb. 11: Swing Time returns to Centro Asturiana in Tampa featuring Blair Carman & the Belleview Boys. Cost $12.00 Cocktails, water and bar available... THIS IS A NON SMOKING EVENT. Centro Asturiano is located at the corner of Palm Avenue & Nebraska Avenue in Ybor City (1913 N Nebraska Ave.) It has a great dance floor in a historic building. Parking is free. One hour east coast swing lesson is from 8pm - 9pm and is included in the ticket price. The band starts at 9pm. 3 A night at the theater is tentatively scheduled for March 11 - we need 12 people in order to book it. Sharon Leavitt, Social Chair Fifty-Fifty Winner: Sandy Lindberg was the lucky winner of $59 in the 50/50 drawing at the January meeting. Handicap Coordinator The most improved female golfer for January was Sandy Lindberg. And it was her lucky night because one of the 5 50/50 tickets she won turned out to be the winning ticket for that evenings drawing. When you re hot you re hot, right Sandy?! Due to the must be present to win rule no prize was awarded to the most improved male golfer. Also a reminder that you must go to the national website and update your handicap each month to assure that the handicap printed in the newsletter is current. For first time enrollees in the handicap service they will issue a card with your member number and club number which you will need to enter scores. Last month, I mentioned that our focus for this year is going to be on increasing membership. With the work of Rob Brauns and our membership committee, we've already got good ideas and plans underway to promote our organization. I'm very excited about all that they are doing and I would like to encourage any of you to help them in our membership drive. With just a month into my stint as president, I want to share with you my thoughts on what I feel our club is all about. The National ASGA coined the slogan, "Fun, Fellowship, and Fairways." "Fun" is aptly placed first and that is what I want all of our members to experience, both on and off the course. I'm not discounting the fact that we are a golf organization. To play golf and meet other golfers are the reasons why we all joined the ASGA. Both our scheduled monthly golf outings and "off-weekend" outings are very much a part of our chapter's activities that we all look forward to and participate in. When we're participating in these events, I feel we should strive to play our best and play by the rules as best we can. But I want us to have fun in the process. I don't feel that we should get into a "zone" and lose sight of the fact that we have many different levels of golfers in our group. Some have played for many years, play very well and know all the rules. Others are relatively new with little golfing experience, and are not as up-to-date on golf rules and etiquette. I would like us all to take this into consideration when we're playing, and just enjoy the day. Enjoy the company of the group you're in, enjoy the course, compliment your team mates on their good shots, marvel at your own good shots and long putts...and most of all...have FUN!!!! 5 CELEBRATING 18YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION FEBRUARY, 2011 Wilmington s Beach Blast Our Wilmington, NC chapter is hosting their Beach Blast multichapter golf weekend, April 2-4. Wilmington s done a great job hosting the Winter Chill events over the years, now it s time to head to the Carolinas for some beautiful springtime golf. Enjoy new friends and renew old acquaintances playing Masonboro Country Club on Saturday and Beau Rivage on Sunday. And, of course, there s good food and great fun to be had by all. EVENT DATES: March 2-9, 2011 LOCATION: Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui, Hawaii WHO CAN ATTEND: Any ASGA Member Sometimes opportunities present themselves and you have to act - - quickly. This happened recently when we started probing hotel rates in Hawaii for a wintertime event. (Yes, even at 80 degrees, they still call it winter!) So without a lot of notice, we ve presented our membership with a upcoming event that is sure to woo. Three rounds of golf at Wailea (site of past years Wendy s Skin Games), seven nights at the beautiful Fairmont Kea Lani and eight food functions. Over 20 members have signed-up already and we ll continue to register members all the way up until late February. We scheduled the event to begin on a Wednesday (March 2) and end on a Wednesday (March 9) as we found airlines were more likely to allow us to use our points and miles. There is a registration form attached with this newsletter and all details, updates, etc. are at the event website: You can save money by rooming with a friend. If you don t know anyone who s attending, we can possibly pair you with a same-sex roommate subject to availability. Deposit info is on the site along with a daily itinerary and excursion info. Updating Your Phone, Address Online is Easy! If the information we have on file for you has changed, i.e. your handicap, your home phone, address, etc., or you want to add your cell phone to your roster, you can do all that yourself by going to the homepage at We re a volunteer organization but please don t rely on others in your chapter to update your personal info. Do it online! Newsletters Going Green: You Must Act Now! For about 18 years now, the national office has been printing news-letters for local chapters and mailing them via snail mail. However, for the past two years, we ve worked out the kinks on getting your news-letter to you via . Advantage: you get your newsletter 3-6 days earlier than through snail mail. Therefore, effective with the March, 2011 newsletters, every member who has an address on file with the national office will be sent an electronic newsletter UNLESS you OPT-IN for a printed newsletter. Members joining or renewing after January 1, 2011 will automatically receive e-newsletters unless they opt-in for a printed newsletter. If you choose a printed newsletter, you will not receive the electronic newsletter any longer.
