1 CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Pinehurst Chapter - American Singles Golf Association April 2011 President s Message We had a record number of members sign up for our Opening Event at Southern Pines Golf Course but, sadly, the weather did not cooperate. We did have a few that braved the elements but they stopped when the rain began. Hopefully the weather will be nice for golf April 2nd at Hyland Golf Club. Dan will try and schedule another outing at Southern Pines as it is a favorite for our group and usually well attended. Our March meeting was held at the Holly Inn. This is a new spot for us and the private room is large enough to accommodate our group. We hope to go there again later in the year. The season is getting busy with many functions planned. Updates are put on our website at as things change. We hope you plan to attend many of these outings and hopefully, the weather will be more cooperative...but that s the nature of the game we love so much!! ~Judy Wimmer, judy@asgapinehurst.com Golf Committee Report Our season opener at Southern Pines Golf Course looked to be one of our best attended 18-hole events; but, you can never count on the weather, especially in March. Seven brave souls out of 39 started out on Saturday but most called it quits after 5 holes. Southern Pines G.C. is in very good shape and I am working with the club to place them on our schedule again. Hyland Golf Course, our next 18 hole event, is scheduled for Saturday, April 2nd. It s a fun course & the evite details are already in your inbox. The 2nd 18- hole event for April will be at Little River Golf Course on Sunday, April 17th at 12:00pm. Our Nine & Dines for the month will be held at Longleaf Golf Course on Thursday 4/7 & at The Carolina Golf Club on Wednesday 4/27. Both Nine and Dines begin at 5:30pm. The next Clinic is scheduled for Friday, 4/15 at Knollwood G.C. & Driving Range. The lesson will cover the short irons in your bag. Start time for the clinics is going to change to 5:30pm for warm-up with the lessons beginning at 5:45pm ~Dan Runk dfrunk@nc.rr.com Social Committee Ah Spring has sprung! The Dogwoods and other flowering trees and bushes are all in bloom, and golf season has definitely arrived. So what happened? To start with: our Season Opener was rained out, or almost so. Actually, we had seven (7) sturdy members show up at Southern Pines G.C. ready to give it a shot. Six of us finished five holes before the cold rain forced us back to the club house, to pick up our rain checks. Our seventh member, Kyle Kilborn, (having driven down from Raleigh for the event), finished all 18 holes. Kyle said he had a great day tee to green, but the wet greens and his putter were a bit of a problem. Our Monthly Dinner Meeting at the Holly Inn Evergreen Music Room was a very pleasant evening. Those in attendance, who volunteered their opinions, provided high praise for the well appointed, large room and good food. We will be returning to the Evergreen Room in November so those of you who missed this meeting will be given a second chance to enjoy one of the jewels of the Pinehurst Resort. During this past month we held our first clinic at Knollwood Fairways & Driving Range, and had what seemed like about twenty participants for the chipping clinic. The instruction was great, as usual, and it is hoped that all who were present will always remember to keep your hands ahead of the club-face on all chips. Proper technique is so important. We also had our first Nine & Dine of the new golf season. We only had a dozen players for our visit to Midland Country Club, maybe because we were competing with St. Patrick s Day, but it was fun for those in attendance -- as always. We followed our round of golf with a very nice dinner at Table on the Green. Thanks go to Dan Runk for the less than advertised green fees and to Ginger Addis for the excellent dinner arrangements in a nice, quite, private dining area in a very busy restaurant. A fine time was had by all. Ginger has also arranged for us to dine at The Ironwood Café following our Nine and Dine event on Thursday, April 7 th. The Ironwood is always a crowd favorite. Perhaps the springtime warmth will return and we can avail ourselves of their beautiful outdoor patio. We will be going to the Thai Orchid in Aberdeen for our next Monthly Meeting, on April 14th, so please read the associated E-vite very carefully and respond completely as this is another Pre-Order dinner with a great many menu choices. This would be a great evening to introduce your friends, especially single golfers, to Pinehurst ASGA. Sometimes you will need to specify a meal choice. Other times you will need to tell us whether you are just going to golf, attending just the social, or joining us for both. Each e-vite will clearly indicate the choices available to you. Our committee chairpersons need this info in order to efficiently plan and carry through on these activities. Rules and More Rules Ball in bunker moved during search Q. Hapless Larry managed to get in another golf predicament. Larry s soaring ball to the green landed short and buried itself in a bunker. The ball was completely covered by sand. I mean the ball totally disappeared. In searching for the ball, Larry s foot accidentally moved the ball and the ball became totally exposed, or in this case, uncovered. What is the correct ruling/requirement? A. No penalty, however the ball must be replaced and totally covered with sand. B. No penalty, however the ball must be replaced and covered with sand but a part of the ball may be left visible. C. One stoke penalty and the ball must be replaced and totally covered with sand. D. One stroke penalty and the ball must be replaced and covered with sand but a part of the ball may be left visible. And the answer is... The answer is B There is no penalty; the ball must be replaced and recovered so that only part of the ball is visible. Rule 12-1 is applicable to this situation. In a hazard, if the ball is believed to be covered by sand or lose impediments, a player can remove by probing or raking with a club as much sand as needed so that he can see a part of the ball. If an excess is removed, there is no penalty and the ball must be re-covered so that only a part of the ball is visible. If the ball is moved during the removal, there is no penalty; the ball must be replaced and, if necessary, re-covered. 4 CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION APRIL, 2011 Event Dates: Thursday, May 26 Sunday, May 29, 2011 With great excitement and anticipation, we re happy to announce our continued association with the fine folks at Pinehurst Resort in announcing our Reunion in Pinehurst. The Reunion on Memorial Day Weekend has shown to be ASGA s largest-attended event each year with attendance soaring over 400 in years past. It s a great time to see old friends and meet friends you never thought you had. Dates set for this year are May 26-29, a Thursday through Saturday (we polled you and that s what you wanted!). We asked Pinehurst to price this event as if you walked-in on your own and wanted the same exact package on the same dates. The standard package would be $1593 and the room-by-yourself package Details: SinglesGolf.com/Pinehurst would be $2349 at the Carolina. Our packages start at $515 per person, based on double occupancy and $674 per person based on single occupancy, which includes all taxes, resort service fees, gratuities for wait and bell staff, etc. Also, ASGA will rebate to your chapter $20.00 per attendee if your chapter sends 10% or more of your membership (as of 5/26/11) to this event. Hawaii Trip Was Fun, Relaxing Our group had not been to Hawaii in a couple of years and it was time for us to go. Twenty-eight of us ventured to Maui-land for seven days of fun, fellowship and beautiful fairways. We played the Wailea courses located near the Fairmont Hotel. Generally, the weather cooperated and so did the seven men who accompanied the 21 women. (Hey, we had a man in each foursome, who can complain?) Kay Reisz had a two-inch closest-to-pin. It was, without a doubt, the shot of the week. Members snorkeled, rode bikes down the side of the volcano, went whale hunting, oops, I m sorry, whale watching, a authentic luau and did many other things to make their daze. As our wheels left the runway, the seven-foot tsunami hit the island. Everyone made it back home safely. We ll head back to Hawaii, most likely in February, 2013, so start saving those beads!
