1 CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Phoenix Chapter - American Singles Golf Association October 2009 Recognition For a Lot of Effort By Jim Montague This year has been a challenge for all of us, including the members of the Phoenix ASGA Board of Directors. In this month s column, I would like to take the time to recognize people who are putting in a lot of extra effort contributing to the events in which we participate. First, I want to start by thanking Cammy Clevenger for all the work she did in organizing a great outlaw event in Prescott over Labor Day weekend. She did a super job on dealing with all the details regarding the golf outings and pairings. We had about 40 people attending this event, including quite a crew from the Palm Springs chapter, who added to the atmosphere of this event. Cammy took the time to make everyone feel welcome and appreciated for their participation. She did this without showing the stress of trying to remember all the details to make this event a fun one for everybody. Great job, Cammy. I also would like to recognize the efforts of Sylvia Klemke, concerning her role as coordinating the details of our golf events for the club. I know Dennis Cain deals directly with the selection of the golf courses, but Sylvia is responsible for communicating to the golf course so that everything is ready to go on the day we play there. This is no small job, so when you get the chance, please thank her for ensuring that all the details for each ASGA golf outing are handled. I also would like to recognize a former member, Don Zeman, for his help regarding the recent golf outing at Copper Canyon on September 26th. This event originally was going to be held at Sundance Golf Club out in Buckeye. Don read the overseeding schedule, and saw that the course was going to be closed when we were supposed to have the outing. Don called Linda Jacobson, who informed Dennis Cain, our golf chairman, about the conflict. Dennis made some calls, and obtained a terrific deal for $36 at Copper Canyon, which is a very nice Troon Golf course on the west end of Bell Road. Thank you to everyone involved in dealing with problem quickly this to make this event happen. I also want to thank Dennis for setting up a few events for the first couple of months in This will give the new golf chairman time to start lining up courses for later on in the year. All of us should also thank Jandy Hughes, our treasurer, for the hard work she has put in regarding the Web site and dealing with the courses so that they are paid. She very efficiently handles a lot of details so that the club s finances are updated monthly. In the next couple of months we will be having nominations for the officers of our club. In our October meeting, we will be nominating a new president for our chapter. In November s meeting, we will be nominating the rest of our officers. If you have an interest in helping the club, there will be a lot of positions available on various committees. I strongly urge all of you to volunteer in some way, so that everyone can contribute to the overall growth and strength of the chapter. Labor Day Golfers Escape Heat in Prescott s High Country By Cammy Clevenger ASGA members from several chapters joined forces for a fun-packed Labor Day outlaw outing in beautiful Prescott. Approximately 40 people participated in the three-day event. The group enjoyed the cooler weather, which also came with some scattered showers. The headquarters of the festivities was the beautiful Prescott Resort & Conference Center, which offered wellappointed rooms, a great pool and a very nice hospitality suite, where people often gathered to socialize after golf. Several fun events were held in the evenings. On Friday night, the group went to the Firehouse Kitchen for pot roast. After dinner, about half the people wandered around the corner to Jersey Lilly's Saloon for some live 1070s and 1980s music. There was a lot of dancing and fun enjoyed by all. On Saturday night, several people partied and danced at the lounge of the headquarters hotel, the Prescott Resort & Conference Center. On Sunday evening, Anne Foster arranged a dinner at the historic Hassayampa Inn, which dates back to the 1920s. We didn t see Faith, the hotel s famous ghost who died on her honeymoon at the hotel, but we enjoyed a long and relaxing dinner. Of course, the main reason everyone was there was to golf. The official golf events were held on Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6. A few people also played on Monday, September 7, on their own. The winning teams were as follows: Saturday, September 5 Course: Antelope Hills North Course Daily Event: Since we were staying in an old Wild West town and at a casino, we built the scoring around that theme. The Saturday game was 5-card poker with a string attached. Each golfer could buy a string for $1, which varied in length from 5 feet to 8 feet. The string could be used once to measure from the ball resting on the green to the hole. If one s ball is within that distance, no further strokes are needed, so you save a stroke. For the poker hand, each hole earns a playing card: Birdie = Ace, Par = King, Bogey = Queen, Double Bogey = Jack, Eagle = Deuce (a wild card.) The best net score determines the card. At the end of the round, the team picks the best five cards to play the poker hand. We had lots of hands with five aces a guy could be shot for that in the Old West! (The winning teams were selected in a tiebreaker, by lowest scores on the highest-ranked handicap holes.) The winning foursomes were: First Place: Nancy Eddy (Phoenix chapter), Rick Riley (Tucson), Sara Shiffman (Palm Springs) and Linda Jacobson (Phoenix). Second Place: Jeanne Tillmann (Phoenix), John Tuel (Phoenix), Gay Potter (guest Phoenix), Norm Hawes (Palm Springs). Third Place: Kathi Willis (Phoenix), Eric Prosnitz (Tucson); Irene Hearn (Palm Springs), Michael Banville (Phoenix). On an impressive individual achievement, Sara Shiffman had a double-eagle net score with the use of her string. Sunday, September 6 Course: Prescott Country Club Game: Toss of the Dice. We played the round, and afterwards, each group threw one die to determine how to score each hole. Shaking a 1 would require the score of player one be used. A 2 would be player two s score, a 3 would be player 3 s score, and a 4 would require the score of player 4. If a 5 was rolled, that would be the low net score of the foursome. Finally, a 6 would require the high net score of the group. All points were then added up to find the lowest team score. The winning teams were: First Place: Jeanne Tillmann (Phoenix), John Tuel (Phoenix), Sylvia Klemke (Phoenix), Michael Bach (Phoenix). Second Place: Dianne Gardner (Palm Springs), Wayne Beissert (Palm Springs), Nancy Eddy (Phoenix), Mike Banville (Palm Springs). Third Place: Jan Courtney (Phoenix), Paul Gordon (Phoenix), Anne Foster (blind draw Palm Springs), Fred Hill (Palm Springs). There was one Closest-to-the-Pin winner on Sunday, in the Ladies division. It went to Nancy Eddy (Phoenix). There was no men s winner on Sunday, and no Closestto-the-Pin was held on Saturday.

3 Leaving A Strong Legacy By Sylvia Klemke The first chapter event after Labor Day was held at The Legacy in south Phoenix, which is often cited by our members as one of their favorite courses. The event was held on Sunday, September 13, on a relatively mild 99 day. The game of the day was a Stableford format, in which a double bogey and higher scores 0 points; a bogey scored 1 point; par was 2 points, a birdie was 3 points; an eagle was 4 points; and a double-eagle was 6 points. The winning teams are as follows: First Place: Dave Ritson, Nancy Eddy, Jim Montague, Jan Courtney. (This team earned 86 points, and won with 4 points on the No. 1 handicap hole.) Second Place: Mike Kelly, Mary Byrd, Bill Ternes, Richard Nelson (86 points, but earned 3 points on the No. 1 handicap hole, thus losing the tiebreaker). Third Place: Randy White, Gin Asche, Darrel Perry, Debbie Flickinger (83 points). The closest-to-the-pin winners were Mary Byrd and Joe Rayo. After the event, the group retreated to the Legacy s nice clubhouse for a 19th Hole celebration, and to award the prizes. Tucson Chapter Extends Invitation for October 4th Outing The Tucson chapter of ASGA will be having a small outing on Sunday, October 4, at Poston Butte in Florence. There will be approximately four foursomes playing. This course is relatively new, opening in It features fabulous views and many island greens, according to Rick Riley, president of the Tucson chapter. Cost is $35. 4 Rules and More Rules How many clubs are you allowed in your golf bag? A. A maximum of 13 clubs. B. A maximum of 14 clubs. C. A maximum of 15 clubs. D. A maximum of 16 clubs And the answer is... The answer is B. A maximum of 14 clubs is allowed. USGA rule 4-4 stipulates that the maximum number of clubs a player is allowed at the start of a round is 14 clubs. A player is limited to the clubs he/she starts with except that if they started with less than 14 clubs, they may add any number of additional clubs up to a maximum of 14 total clubs including the clubs with which they started. The addition of a club or clubs must not "unduly" delay play and the additional clubs added can not come from the bag of any other person playing on the course. Partners may share clubs, provided that the total number of clubs carried by the sharing partners does not exceed 14.

It always helps planning events when we know how many are coming, so please register early if you can. The beauty of this is that you can arrive as many as three (3) days early and stay up to three (3) days late and it will only cost you $64 per person (based on dlb. occ.) to stay an additional night, or $128 to room by yourself. Scotland is Headed Toward Sellout As of late September, nearly 200 people have signed-up for our trip to Scotland, July 31-August 8, We originally set a limit of 128 players but we've secured additional rooms and courses to accommodate our needs.
