1 CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Phoenix Chapter - American Singles Golf Association November 2007 From The President s Desk By Steve Boyd Hi all!!! An important note about the November Monthly Social Hour and ASGA Meeting: November is the month in which you elect the committee chairs. The elections of Golf Committee Chair, Communications Chair, Membership Chair and Social Committee Chair will all be held at this meeting. We are having out meeting at our old stomping grounds, Pete s 19 th Tee at the Rolling Hills Golf Course in Tempe on Wednesday, November 14th. Some changes have been made since our last get together there. The new name of the facility is Rolling Hills 19 th Tee and the new phone number is But there is no doubt in my mind that we will be getting the same old great service we were used to when we regularly met there over the last few years. The meeting starts at 6:30, but you re welcome to come early and socialize before the elections. Hope to see you there. Till then, hit em straight and long! Editor s Corner By Alex Podressoff Have you ever looked at the newsletters of other ASGA chapters? I have today while trying to get some inspiration for this month s column. You should take a look because there are some interesting doings out there. Here are my thoughts. (Disclaimer: I didn t look at many chapters, just enough to get a feel. YMMV.) 1. Wow, do we ever have an active group. You might not realize the variety and number of activities we have until you look at some other groups. Hats off to the social and golf committees. 2. I noticed that several groups combined golf and dining. Yes, we often eat afterwards but they actually schedule it as golf and dine. What do you think? 3. What do you think about a scheduled happy hour where we would meet on a regular day at a regular place? We are such a large geographic area that it might be every other Friday, for example, alternating between east and west side? 4. Some of the groups hold meetings at country clubs or activity centers. If you re a member at such a place, can you host a group? Now on a totally different note, I m still looking for someone to help me with the newsletter. It would be really great to start up the member bios again. Drop me a line, I d love to hear from you. My Thoughts by Steve Yap (2008 president) I am honored that I was elected to be the next President of the Phoenix Chapter, and I look forward to the challenge of working with the Board of Directors, some of whom will be returning officers that have all been great doers for our club. I also look forward to better acquaint myself with each member, and assure you that I will be accessible to all your positive ideas and suggestions for creating a pleasurable and memorable year to come. Steve Boyd, our current President, has been, and continuing to show great devotion and enthusiasm, as did his predecessors Randy White, Jim Williams, and Gil Ide, the latter being one of the Pioneers of our Chapter, whom we are so grateful for Upcoming Event: Dates for New Years in Tampa are Dec 29 - Jan 1st. 2 Phoenix Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association laying the foundation of our Club. We entered the year 2007 with a bang, and looks like we will go out with a bang also. There are some great upcoming Events, like our you can t afford to miss Holiday Party in December, and our need I say more New Year s Eve Extravaganza Weekend! Oh, and speaking of golf, let us all enjoy playing some of that too! Comments from the Golf Chairman November Events By Paul Gordon The winter golf season will be picking up during November, as the overseeding conditions of October will be behind us. We will be playing two courses that are new to the ASGA but not new to the Phoenix golf scene - Riverview (Sun City) and Bougainvillea (Laveen). This is well-manicured 18-hole facility known for its undulating greens, if you can putt on the greens at Riverview, you can putt anywhere. Also, it is a golfer-friendly course wide fairways and accessible greens. The back tees play at a modest 6394 yards with a course rating of 69.6 and a slope of 116. The forward tees play at 5558 yards with a rating of 70.7 and a slope of 115 It will be a fun day at a relaxing venue. Saturday, Nov. 24 Bougainvillea 10 AM shotgun The Bougainvillea Golf Club is located in Laveen, just 15 minutes southwest of downtown Phoenix. The golf course is a lush 18-hole, par 72 course with beautiful views of the South and Estrella mountains. One of the unique features of the golf course is the combination of six par 3's, six par 4's and six par 5's as the course meanders through the residential development of Bougainvillea. The golf course is player friendly, featuring generous fairways and tricky greens. Don't let the wide fairways lull you to sleep, as one of the fifty-seven bunkers will wake you up in a hurry. It's not overwhelmingly MEMBERSHIP DUES Dues for the Phoenix chapter of the American Singles Golf Association are $70.00 per 12 month period. Payment can be made by check or credit card. 3 long - the copper tees play at 6400 yards with a 68.9 rating and a 116 slope - but is a fun track to play. We will have a good time playing and the restaurant s food is very tasty. And the beverages will be cold. October Meeting Minutes Minutes of ASGA October 9 th meeting at The Tortilla Factory- Passing the torch We had a big attendance of 25 members and two guests. The original focus of the meeting was to nominate and elect the president for next year. Darius Sams nominated Mr. Steve Yap to be President and I seconded. Steve was elected unanimously. Steve has done a great job of being handicap chairman which was not an easy job. He has the ability to hear your opinion and listen without being critical even if he does not agree with your idea. I am sure that Mr. Steve Boyd will pass on all of his vast knowledge of what worked and what didn t during his term as president. Steve is quitting smoking which is very impressive. The main point of this meeting was to honor Mr. Gil Ide, one of our charter members, for his time spent being the golf chairman and president of our group. If it weren t for Gil s dedication to this group, the ASGA in Phoenix wouldn t have had the opportunity to grow into the size group that we are now. I personally am glad that I had the chance to meet and get to know Gil. Kathi Willis our membership chairman introduced the two guests, Mary Lou and Lisa, to the group. She also said to sign up by October 29 th for the New Years Eve golf bash at Gold Canyon. They have hired a DJ and the dance area will be selfcontained just for our group. Hilda Marshall was looking for volunteers for the Fry s Electronics open at Greyhawk. The Tortilla Factory was well received by this group. Everybody who attended seemed to have a good time. In a Divot By Mitch Tarr Free-golf-tip.com If your ball is parked against the front of the divot... the forward edge... closest to the green edge, then this is good. This is a good lie in disguise. In this case ignore the divot and swing a normal swing. No worries here. If your ball is sitting at the back of the divot or leaning on the back edge of the divot, you will want to pretend you are hitting from the rough and maybe take one more club than normal. If this is a 7- iron distance for you, take a 6-iron. If the ball is inside the divot... closer to your feet, you should be prepared that the grass may grab the heel of your club. Aim slightly to the right (or left if you are left handed) and grip the club a bit harder to prevent the grass from closing your clubface at impact. Finally, if your ball is away from you on the far side of the divot, you should be aware the toe of the club might catch and open your face up. So aim slightly to the left. Hopefully, when you next see your ball in a divot, you'll remember this tip and safely get back on 'green'.
