1 CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Washington DC Chapter - American Singles Golf Association September 2009 August 2 Queenstown Harbor, River Course Queenstown was quite an experience. 46 players headed out to play. Traffic was very light, the weather looked at best threatening and I got numerous frantic calls from players traveling from VA and MD in torrential downpours, while the weather at the course remained gray and dry. Seven groups managed to tee-off before a drop of rain fell. My group and others huddled for 5 minutes or so as the thunder and lightning passed well to the west of us. A few players headed to the clubhouse or fled the course altogether. The rain lightened-up, we bundled-up in our rain gear and played the next 5 holes in a light steady rain and cool temperatures. Then miraculously the clouds lifted, the sun shone brightly and dried everything out and it turned into a most magnificent day. Most of the field finished the round and were well-rewarded with a challenge, brilliant views of the river, exceptionally good course conditions and awesome fun! Groups gathered in the clubhouse for libations and spirited talk about the adventures on the course as the last of the players finished. When the markers were in, congratulations went out for the following par 3 sharp-shooters who were all within 2 feet of the hole: newbie Jerry Olek, semi-newbie Ellie Hockman, veteran sharpshooter, Wayne Crupi and guest Dan Tierney. A group of us headed to Fisherman s Inn on Kent Island for a delightful seafood dinner and more laughs and conversation before heading back over the bridge in easy traffic to home. ~Sharon August 7 Happy Hour at Café Deluxe Yes it was warm but that did not stop around 20 of ASGA-DC's finest and guests from making a trek into the Cleveland Park neighborhood for Happy Hour at Café Deluxe. Now I will not list everybody that attended, but a number of us, including Karen Farrington, Marsha Senach, Betty Sandbeck, and Richard Lewis did trek over from across the river. Long time ski club member Julie Carr also trekked over to check us out. Among others spotted were Joyce Jansen, LeeAnn Jensen, and neighborhood residents Peggy Orchowski and Nancy Bulger, who had with her the current issue of Rolling Stone that her son wrote the featured story on rock drummer Ginger Baker of Cream. Thanks to Betsy Muri who scouted out and recommended Cafe Deluxe. August 14 Top Golf They came, 12 brave souls, on a mild August evening, on a mission to tame that most cantankerous golf club, the Driver. Came and mastered they did - Irene, Marty, Nancy, Shelia, Dave, Karen, Livingston, Lloyd, Ken and Julie are all now masters of the Driver! Several of us made the road trip to King Street Blues for a bit after the clinic. The warm winds blew-in 30+ ASGAers, 30+ Paul s listers and a core of Singles on Sailboats who got wind that there was fun on the horizon! Prez Sharon eagerly strode-in with a giant cosmo martini balloon that set a festive tone and notified the wait staff of her intentions. We had plenty of reserved space in this sleek, contemporary and sexy restaurant. Ken Unzicker, Amy Morris, Richard Lewis and Rona Hirschberg kept our personal bartenders and bartenders-in-training hopping with drink and app orders from the happy hour menu. Sandy Goshgarian, Steve Brennan, Jan Morgan, Bev Larson and Karen Farrington fit right into the Mediterranean atmosphere. Bill Gordon, Doria Kaplan and Karl Hamady from the list were still buzzing about ASGA s lobster bake. Some lingered well past the dinner hour some went on to various dance venues and some went in search of live entertainment. It was quite a Happy Happy Hour! August Weekend in Pennsylvania Well, we tried to escape the humidity! Saturday was as humid as Pennsylvania can be! But, it wasn't hot and, best of all, while it rained 4+ inches in areas around DC, we just experienced occasional drizzle at the Bridges in Abbottstown. The course was challenging, but not too tight. Vistas were lovely. Winners of closest to pin were : Sandy Koubek, Livingston Johnson, Mark Hendrickson, and Bev Lemon. We had dinner on the Patio at the "Pike" restaurant, where we were given individual checks without complaint. The food was excellent and prices unbelievably low compared to home. The hotel was very nice as well. On Sunday, the humidity left and we had wonderful weather for our day at the Links of Gettysburg. It appeared that everyone had a good time on this beautiful, if a little challenging, course. The course was in great shape and the staff was friendly. Four players had an especially good time since they won the closest to the pin contest. They were LeeAnn Jensen, Bev Lemon, Betsy Pond and Sandy Koubek. I think the par 3s were very women friendly. (Sandy and Bev, are you giving lessons?) ~Betty and Pat August 30 Oak Marr We had 9 holes of golf, followed by tea, crumpets, champagne and other delicacies at Famous Dave s BBQ. ~Richard Lewis Rules and More Rules Q. Larry's ball landed in the sand hazard next to green number 7. His ball came to rest within inches of a pine cone that was in the bunker. Before chipping his ball from the hazard, and so as not to be distracted, Larry picked up the pine cone and tossed it under the adjacent pine tree. What penalty, if any, does Larry incur? A. The more exact answer is two-stroke penalty in stoke play and loss of hole in match play. When both a loose impediment and a golf ball lie in the same sand hazard, the loose impediment may not be removed before playing the ball. (USGA Rule 13-4c applies) Q. You are on a wet green. What is the best thing you can do to improve your odds of holing a putt? A. Mark your ball, dry it, replace carefully keeping ball as dry as possible B. Leave the ball as it lies, a wet ball on a wet surface rolls better than a dry ball on a wet surface. C. Strike the ball as low as possible so that the ball will hop along the line of putt minimizing the effect of the wet green. And the answer is: A, Mark your ball, dry it, replace carefully keeping ball as dry as possible. When stroked properly a dry ball on wet greens obtains a ring of water around the axis which helps maintain its line with less break. 5 CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION SEPTEMBER 2009 In a matter of a few weeks, over 70 people have registered for the Battle at the Beach so far, which will be held at the Marriott Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach, SC. This hotel is a AAA Four- Diamond hotel and is ranked as one of the Top 500 resorts in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. If you d like to register for the event over the phone, call us at or toll free at GOLFMATE. Scotland Was Great One of the tough aspects of this job is having to check-out places for future events. Anyone who knows me knows that we would never head to a certain locale without the place being thoroughly vetted. So in mid-august, I got my first opportunity to visit St. Andrews, Scotland and a variety of venues. It s amazing to think before you go that you are going to do x and upon departure from their country, you ve ruled-out x and start planning for y. Then, a week later, you re looking at z. I know that ultimately, going to Scotland is one of life s great experiences and my purpose for going there was to find out what we needed to provide to you that would be over and above your expectation. I also realize that the better the value, the more we ll have in attendance. Playing the Old Course: We ve all thought about going there and the feeling we d have playing the Old Course, you know, coming in on the eighteenth hole and tens of thousands cheering us on. You could play at midnight and have the same feeling. I had a last moment opportunity to play the Old Course only because it was at 5:30pm. We d probably not finish but at least you could say you ve been there, said Charles Head, the Fairmont General Manager, who managed to get us on. I can t remember the last time I walked a golf course. But it didn t matter if I had to walk, ride a mule or whatever; nothing was going to keep me from playing. This place speaks to you. You step-out on the first tee box and you feel the history, you feel the ground almost talking to you. You feel the presence of all the greats who have preceded you. On every hole, something big has happened at some point in time in history. My only regret was in not reading everything I could about past championships, memorizing those relevant events in my head and re-living them as I played the course. I ll know next time. A large, 61% of you, in our Scotland survey, said that if you went to Scotland, playing the Old Course would be a must play. It s 100% impossible for a group our size (projected to be players based on the survey) to play it, so playing the Old Course will be something you ll have to handle on your own (see Singles- Golf.com/scotland for annual or daily-ballot information). But in the meantime, we re lining-up some great courses, some courses you ll be happy to tell your friends, kids and grandkids about. This will simply be a great trip and you ll meet friends you never thought you had. Details forthcoming. We promise you ll be impressed with the venue and price.
