1 CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Washington DC Chapter - American Singles Golf Association September 2007 August 4 Clustered Spires On a steamy day in Frederick Maryland, thirty-two golfers took to the course loaded with enthusiasm, new golf balls and lots of water. Overhead, a unique gallery of small planes and helicopters cheered the golfers on and student fliers entertained us with our own private air show. Undaunted by the heat, today s AS- GAers were tested on their golf skills, fashion sense and intellect. While each golfer played his or her own game, the theme for today s event was "Teamwork" and the eight teams were up for their challenges. The Blues Brothers and Sisters, led by Captain Bartle, hands down won recognition for Most Color-Coordinated Team. Unfortunately, their golf skills were no match for The Hot Bods, who won the dreaded Yellow Ball Contest under the leadership of Captain Wortman. Both teams were totally outwitted, however, by Old Yeller, with Captain Musson at the helm, who took the honors for the Trivia Contest. Also rans included The Optimists, led by Captain Cook, The Misfits, lead by Captain "I m a carnivore" Greiner, The Sweeties and The Sweatees, led by Captain Emme, the Blanco Amigos, led by Capitan Taslet, and of course, the Sopranos, led by Captain Weiss. Only one team was disqualified from the Yellow Ball Contest, due to the fact that the "yellow" ball they turned in did not pass its drug test. Prizes were given out at the awards dinner which featured animated debate over exactly where Patrick Henry made his "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" speech. Golfers also enjoyed good food and COLD drinks at the elusive Barley & Hops restaurant. Individual closest to the pin winners were Mark Hendrickson (#3), BJ Barger (#7), Chris Sorge (# 13) and Tom Evans (#16). Thanks to all who came out and braved the heat! Special thanks to the independent accounting team of Cook and Emme, who divvied up the money and kept the scoring honest, and to Photojournalist Siegel, who took commemorative photos. ~Christine Sorge, Event Coordinator August 5 Virginia Oaks Not rain, nor heat, nor traffic, nor bugs could keep 23 brave ASGAers from swinging their clubs at the Virginia Oaks Pot Luck pairings. At 1:30 everyone lined up with excitement to draw either a blue or a pink slip that designated their cart position. We settled in with our new cart mate and we were on our way. Luckily the rain held off just long enough so everyone could finish all 18 holes. Afterwards everyone met at the bar for refreshments, to tell stories and eat curly fries. The winners of the closest to the pin for the Par 3s: Hole #5 - Bob Frazer (sorry Vince) Hole #9 - Jerry Miatech (sorry again, Vince) Hole #11 - Neil Mark Hole #15 - Mark Hendrickson And the winner of the longest putt on Hole #18 was also Neil Mark. Thanks to everyone ~Marji McDonald August 10 TOP Golf Last Friday evening, 11 brave ASGA- DCers and guests braved the baring of their golf souls and their problem relationships with their golf driver at TopGolf. Golf Driver relationship analyzer Stephen Moskal was able to fixed all the golf driver relationship problems that the ASGA-DCers presented to him. All attendees also received a CD with drills to keep their golf driver problems away. Next clinic will be Friday, September 14, ~Mark Hendrickson, Event Coordinator Upcoming Event: Dates for New Years in Tampa are Dec 29 - Jan 1st. Dates are contracted and firm. 3 August 12 Old Hickory It was a beautiful day at Old Hickory. Winners of closest to the pin (men) were Vince Vigliotti and Howard Schwarz, a member of the Philadelphia chapter. Winners for women s ctp were Peggy Randolph and yours truly. Thanks to all those who came to play for making it a successful outing and thanks to Barry Fields for setting it up for us. It appeared everyone had a good time, to quote Barry. ~Betty Sandbeck, event coordinator August 17 Happy Hour at McCormick and Schmick s Thirty happy TGIFers met at McCormick and Schmick s in Reston for a fun-filled Happy Hour.. The appetizers were flying out of the kitchen as the group sampled every delicious appetizer on the menu. People played musical chairs as they switched from table to table to catch up with old and new friends. Of course, we got all of the information on the triathlons that Tina Goodman will be running. GO Tina GO!!! WIn those triathlons!!! The gang partied on for three hours and then some of the group continued on to Clyde s. A special thank you to the early birds, who helped save tables for our ASGA group. It was a fun evening for all who came! ~Jeannie Bixler Coordinator August 18 Maryland National 35 ASGAers headed north to Maryland National on a beautiful Saturday for a round of golf. The course was in great condition and everyone had a great day. Some people that stayed late were treated to a fireworks display. The closest to the pin winners were April Langevin, Jim Johndrow (2) and yours truly. We will be playing at Maryland National again on October 14 th, so mark your calendars. ~Pat McVeigh, ec August 19 Tubing We don't need no stinkin' paddles! On a warm Sunday in August a group of brave ASGAers traded our golf shoes for aqua socks, donning bathing suits and vinyl tubes instead of proper golf attire. After watching a short horror flick disguised as a socalled "safety video" where we learned of all the different ways we could die or be forever mangled, we nevertheless jumped butt-first into the raging whitewaters of the Potomac River. Just as we decided "hey this isn't so bad", we were tossed about at our first set of rapids. Here we lost all beverages of the soft-drink variety. However, we soon learned that the River provides for those who are brave enough to venture in, and as we lamented the loss of our assorted sodas and bottled spring water, cans and cans of Bud-Light appeared, just waiting for us to pluck them out of the water and suck 'em down. Fresca for Bud- Light - not a bad barter (but we really would have preferred Miller Lite - note to Potomac River). Soon we found ourselves in calm water where we regrouped, finished our beer, counted heads and floated calmly thinking "Boy wouldn't it have been great if someone had thought to bring a camera?" Just then, eagle-eye Ilene spotted - YES!! - a camera floating by and so we were able to take photos of all of us looking silly in our orange tubes and red life vests. By now we were believing in the magic of Harper's Ferry where, while on the River, all you have to do is wish for what you want and the all-knowing River will provide. We all began to wish in earnest for the winning Mega Millions and Power Ball lottery tickets to float by in a zip-lock bag. Alas, this was not to be. It was about this time that the water slowed down and we found ourselves to be unmoving and so we all began to flap our arms until we came upon yet another set of rapids. We alternated between holding onto our tubes for dear life and flapping our arms for about 2 hours when we found ourselves at the take-out spot where there was a nice bus driver waiting to bring us back to our cars and dry clothes. Because we were all hungry we headed into historic Harper's Ferry where we regrouped at The Armory Pub for some cold beer and hot pub grub. Although several folks expressed some concern for their safety at the beginning of the trip, everyone survived and had a great time and all agreed: we should come back and do this again real soon. ~Chris Sorge August 25 Potomac Ridge Battle of the Sexes Well, it appears all warriors are present and accounted for even with the brutal heat pouring down on them and the women taking the men to the mat last Saturday at Potomac Ridge. YEA!! WOMEN RULE!!! It was the ULTIMATE BATTLE ROYALE, and the women showed their true colors by coming though with an outstanding win! Women, I salute you! All I can say to the other gender playing in the horrible heat and humidity nice try and naner, naner. Mark Hendrickson may have come across as the biggest winner when he EAGLED Ridge hole 4! Nice going! But that may have only served as a spark for April Langevin who, after witnessing that, proceeded to bird the NEXT THREE out of four HOLES! Pretty exciting! For winning the match, all the women received a sleeve of golf balls. Prize winners included: Low Gross Man and Woman: John Fletcher and April Langevin Low Net Man and Woman: Mark Hendrickson and Jane Cushman Closest to the Pins: Ashton Carlton and Sue Eliasberg And Longest Drives: John Fletcher and Sue Eliasberg Hope all enjoyed their prizes, included he who won the cart beer holder WITH beer included! It s been fun holding this tournament over the years, but I m retiring from golf for awhile due to injury. I hope someone else will pick up the gauntlet and take over from here. Otherwise, the women s win will go down in infamy! Thanks Mark for taking over the tournament and presenting the gifts. ~Anne Hosford, ec
