1 CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Washington DC Chapter - American Singles Golf Association October 2008 Hole In One By One Of Our Own On September 21 st, Betsy Pond holed one on the 7 th hole of Pleasant Valley. In her own words, Truly amazing. Three cheers to Betsy. Golf Recaps: August 8th, At Top Golf Irene, Jodie, Nancy, Deborah, Mike, Ann, Phyllis, Dave and Mark now hit a golf ball out of a sand trap - the first time, and close to the flag! ~Mark August 16th, At Renditions Well, the group had to scramble as Renditions changed our tee times at the last minute on Friday afternoon, but thanks to our great golf chair, Mark Hendrickson, we were able to contact everyone who signed up so that no one was left behind. To compensate us for our trouble the course gave each of us a "good anytime" gift certificate. The folks who run the course could not have been nicer, providing 20 free water bottles, apples, and help. It was a beautiful day which helped ease the pain of the challenging course. If you haven't played Renditions...you are missing out. Perhaps find one of the folks who played last weekend, and use his or her gift certificate! ~Susan M. August 30th, At Cross Creek Five balanced foursomes made the short trip to Beltsville for a fun day of golf, leaving two late requests on the waiting list. The fairways were a bit parched, the greens had been aerated at the beginning of the week, and the rule was cart path only, so we played in 4:45 instead of the usual 4:30. Worse, the bar was closed because the facility had been rented for a (choke) wedding. Nevertheless, when we convened at Moose Creek Steak house, nobody wished they had been stuck in traffic at the Bay Bridge instead. So we enjoyed food and drinks and hoped the course will be in better shape when we go back in the spring. Longest Putt Stephanie F, about 30 feet. I think I know who I want to team up with for the next scramble! ~Jerry August 31st, At Osprey Traffic: What traffic? Crowds? We create our own crowds. At ASGA-DC s Sunday outing at The Osprey s, not only did we not experience much traffic on the roads, when we arrived under sunny skis and low humidity at The Osprey s we had the course almost to our selves. The course was in good shape, and while the golf gods did snatch their share of golf balls, everybody had a good time on the course. We also saw numerous boats leaving from the marina that sits next to the course. After everybody completed their rounds, the prizes were awarded on the terrace overlooking the #18 green. While the golf chair could not give himself an award for almost holing out an 80-foot chip shot on #18, Mark E., Ralph O. and Bob S. received the closest to pins prizes. After a brief chipping review, it was off to working on putting technique. Stephen set-up an elaborate system of putting stations so everybody could work on different parts of their putting technique. Mother Nature made this clinic very realistic with a couple of rain drops. Another feature of the clinic was Stephen setting-up in the TopGolf golf lab the putting posture alignment system. All attendees used the system, and they all now have good putting posture alignment. For the secret to this, you have to attend the putting clinic next season! The third part of the clinic was the French Wine Tasting. In weaving the talks of adventure of an old golf buddy s adventure in French vineyard lan d acquisition, the three distinctive French wines discussed: a White Bordeaux from the Chateau Coucheroy, a Bordeaux from Chateau Landat; and a Burgundy, Savigny les Beaune from Meursault Village. September 14th, At Reston National Undaunted by the blazing sun, mid-day temperatures in the mid-90s, and a heat index of 100 degrees, twenty-three intrepid ASGAers set out, water bottles in hand, to vanquish Reston National. The beautiful rolling, green, tree-lined course offered sporadic shade and innumerable opportunities to improve the distance on your drives both off the tees and on the greens. The sight and sound of gushing water sprinklers conjured up visions of running through them just to cool off. After having completed 18 holes and weathered the afternoon heat, we trooped into the club house to learn that the Redskins had managed to beat the Saints for their (and Jim Zorn s) first win, a fitting end to a challenging afternoon. In the words of Shakespeare: All s well that ends well. ~Norma Jean September 19th, Happy Hour At Vinifer Wine Bar & Bistro ASGA DC celebrated the last weekend of summer on the patio of Vespucci restaurant in Fairfax enjoying the beautiful weather with happy hour drink prices, great food, and the fine, fine music of Carol Gaylord & Bruce. Katsu. And of course, the excellent company of fellow single golfers. Thanks to all who came out and made it a very enjoyable evening. ~Jan September 21st, At Blue Ridge Yesterday was a fabulous day to be golfing in Blue Ridge. The weather was spectacular, the clouds and mountains were beautiful, and the 23 golfers who played enjoyed this lovely course. Betty S. won the women's longest drive, as well as one of the closest to the pin holes. Mark H. won the men's longest drives; Charlie S. won 2 closest to the pins, and Wayne C. won the closest on number 5. No bears were spotted yesterday, but one was seen on Saturday. As always, the course was very accommodating and a joy to play. ~Betsy September 27th, Anniversary Event at Virginia Oaks Checklist for successful anniversary party: Golf Gods appeased check Food arranged check Beverage cart available check Bar open after golf check Entertainment check All items checked for superior anniversary party - check Successful - of course! The crowds came, among them, long time members, new members including Stephanie and even alumni that met at Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter s roster? Our entertainer, Paul Venire, was not just an after dinner show, he also challenged ASGA-DC s finest to a beat the comedian contest on the ever challenging #9 hole - yes that mini island green that you can see from the banquet room at Virginia Oaks. There were many Starbucks gift cards, golf gift bags and golf lessons awarded, with biggest haul being to the winning scramble team of Vince V., Francine M., Ken U. and Sharon G. ~Mark Hendrickson, Golf Chair October 4th, Pre-Golf At Piccadilly Brew Pub Saturday night dinner the group met at Piccadilly Brew Pub in Winchester. It is a warm & charming restored building with old brick walls & wooden ceiling beams. During appetizers & dinner we enjoyed listening to piano music. Several folks enjoyed the beer sampler trays with dinner & the food was very good. After dinner some folks wandered down to the Ole Towne Walking Mall on Loudoun St. while others ventured off to Pack's Soft Ice Cream Stand to enjoy Hot fudge Sundaes & a Pumpkin/Vanilla Swirl Ice Cream. Yummy! ~Janice October 5th, At Rock Harbor Thanks to all the brave souls who took the challenge at Rock Harbor the day after the amateur event called the Boulder Tournament. Our event treated all ASGA players to a lovely deep, deep rough, and greens as smooth as glass with the most charming pin placements imaginable. All one could do was struggle & laugh as the balls ran like crazy across the greens with even the most gentle taps. Several in the bar afterwards had a glazed looks on their faces as they compared scores & experiences on the course hole by hole. It was a beautiful fall day in the low 70s, with bright sunshine & blue skies-- a perfect day for golf. Janice had a memorable hole on 12, where her ball bounced 3 times across the water which the hit the rocks on the far side & bounced up on the green.
