1 CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Washington DC Chapter - American Singles Golf Association November 2009 October 2 Happy Hour Smiley the Happy Face Balloon was the signal to find us and the Paul s List happy hour crowd last Friday evening. With yours truly in the lead, we took over the front part of the main bar area by the entrance to cciite, and between Paul s List and us was had around 60 people there and plenty of space for everybody. Attending included the ready to go dancing David Bath, Susan Herrold, dancing shoes on and ready Bev Larson, Ray Adame, JoAnn St. Peter, Rita Daley, Jan Morgan, Steve Brennan, and Sharon Masin. After, with our fearless leader, Sharon Geyer, leading the charge, several of us checked out the VIP Singles dance at he Elk s lodge on Arlington Blvd. in Fairfax. ~Mark October 10 th and 11 th golf The fields weren t as large as some before, but at least five determined groups played both days. Saturday was a little gray at times, but thanks to one member selflessly spending hundreds on a new rain suit after a drenching at Bull Run, there was no rain to mention. Ladies, you missed out ; the Saturday group was mostly men. Almost everyone went on to Houlihan s for dinner, with some members celebrating into the night. We were all rewarded by an absolutely beautiful fall day on Sunday. Ray Adame swept the men s longest drive competitions on both days in Olympic style and a closest to the pin on Sunday. To quell the mumblings that he might be required to play from the blues from now on, he graciously donated all his winnings to help feed and water the rest of us! I believe Dan Carter gave back his door prize money to the cause as well! Mark Hendrickson and Gerry Olek were the closest to the pin winners on Saturday. Suzanne McNicholas took the ladies longest drive on Saturday and Madeleine Burgoyne took it on Sunday. Yours truly and Madeleine Burgoyne had low gross on Saturday. With co-hosts Carol McClure and Joyce Jansen guarding the bar with their balloon, and Carol Placek assisting, the party started. Along with the Paul Listers including the king of the list Paul Wright in attendance, we had over 40 people in attendance. Among the ASGAers spotted were just in from her latest adventure Betsy Muri, Rosemary Leffler, Stan Hecht and Nancy Bulger. As happy hour wound down, a number of attendees including our prez Sharon headed out for dancing at a couple of Rockville venues. If fact, the sun did come out in the afternoon, and it was delightful! When the last foursome finished, the sun was getting low in the horizon but remember it s November in Maryland and with Deborah Bowden keeping everybody in line, Mangia E Bevi welcomed us for après golf with good food and good wine. ~Mark October 16 th 18 th Golf and Social The Asheville ASGA chapter hosted a multi-chapter weekend at Lake Lure, NC with about 128 attendees. There was optional golf Friday, with a welcome happy hour Friday evening. The Rumbling Bald resort had cabins for us to stay in and we met some really fun folks in our cabins. We had golf on Saturday at the Rumbling Bald course and the weather was a bit damp and cool in the morning, but it never rained hard on us. Saturday night there was a fabulous band with lots of dancing. Sunday golf at Apple Valley came early it was cold, but nothing long underwear or layers couldn t help. We played a scramble. A very good time was had by all - but like Vegas, what happens at Lake Lure, stays in Lake Lure! ~Betty October 24 th - Golf Fellow golfers, Fourteen brave golfers drove through sometimes blinding rain to gather in gorgeous Bluemont, VA for 18 holes of golf. The mountains were spectacularly clad in orange, yellow, and red leaves. We were able to start out without rain but did endure on and off, sometimes heavy, showers on the front nine. We lost at least 4 golfers by the time the back nine rolled around. And for the record, we lost a lot more balls under all the leaves!! For those who persevered through the back nine we were rewarded with dry weather, sunshine even! The view from the tee boxes of 14 and 15 were spectacular! And the cows were there to cheer us from across the Shenandoah. Seven tired and hungry golfers met at Magnolia's on the Mill in Purcellville for drinks and dinner. My sincere thanks to those golfers who came and conquered. I would also like to thank Mark Hendrickson for arranging this outing. Due to a heavy work schedule, he could not golf, but did come out for dinner. Now, that's a dedicated ASGA officer! ~Heidi October 30 th Happy Hour M&S Grill in Reston Town Centre welcomed over 30 ASGA members and Paul s List guests for a Happy Hour on October 30 th. The Ghouls, Goblins, Golfers, and their guests arrived in rare form to celebrate All Hallows Eve. Early bird arrivers, Ken Unzicker and guest Janet Fallon, held the 1 st spots in the bar and led the way for others who included yours truly, the Good Fairy, along with Gangster Mark Hendrickson, the biker chick, Chris Ozyjowski, Richard Lewis, Brenda Heinig and Dale Rinker. David Zerbee, a bribable Referee, and friends Bill Applegate and Tracey Switzer, also joined the partiers. Later arrivers included Betty Sandbeck, Pat Sims, Dave and Ellen Classen (alumni), Mary Wall, Barry Fields in black leather, JoAnn St. Peter, Rita Daley, Amy Mor- Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter s roster? David Bath, in hospital scrubs and a curly purple wig rounded out the ASGA gang for the evening. A number of different groups of costumed partiers were escorted around the Town Center by lead mobster, Mark Hendrickson, before the party gang started to take off. A brief discussion of the election for the 2010 ASGA president took place after 7:30 pm and Sharon Geyer was reelected as President for the 2010 term. In October, chapters should have elected their chapter president for the 2010 calendar year beginning January 1. At the November meetings, chapters are suppose to elect their committee heads. All of this is according to your chapter bylaws ( If you have not elected your leaders for next year, please make sure you do it by the end of November.
