1 CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Washington DC Chapter - American Singles Golf Association November 2010 General Information Chapter Elections No mudslinging here we are a friendly bunch, given to polite behavior and a single focus to make the ASGA DC Chapter to best of the best. In the presidential race, Heidi Moos was elected to take the gavel from Sharon Geyer, who hit her term limit this year. A big round of applause goes to Sharon for a great two-year stint as Ms. Prez. The following Committee Chairs will be elected at the November 19 Happy Hour at Lia s in Chevy Chase, MD: Social Chair, Golf Chair, Membership Chair, and Communications Chair. If you are interested in running a Chair, you can find information on these offices at organization.html, then contact one of the committee members with your nominations. The Nomination Committee members are Betty Sandbeck, Mark Hendrickson, and Jerry Olek. Recent Away Events Several DC Chapter members recently traveled to some really interesting places to place golf with other ASGA Chapters. Notable trips were to Scotland (sponsored by ASGA National) and the Mountain Fall Weekend at Lake Lure, North Carolina (sponsored by the ASGA Asheville, NC Chapter). B.J. Barger, Jeannie Bixler, Marty Burack, Wayne Crupi, Sharon Davies (traveling in from Italy), LeeAnn Jensen, Mary Lou Kupfer, Deb Milliner, Heidi Moos, Charlie O Dell, Mary Wall, Judith Wortman, Stan Yackoski, and George Yu represented the AGSA-DC Chapter in Scotland. See the photo of the group. I understand that all had a great time. Heidi and Jeannie wrote a wonderful summary of the trip, which was sent out to all our members. J.B. Bourne, Ilene Cook, Randy Fortwengler, Dot Johnson, Tony Paduano, Susan Smith, Leesa Weiss, Colleen Wood represented the Chapter at the Mountain Fall Weekend. Thanks to Hank Parish of the Asheville Chapter who put this great weekend together. A lot of work went into it and a lot of good times came out it! Check for photos soon at Recent Local Events Friday, September 17, Nine and Wine at Top Golf, Alexandria VA It was a very pleasant September evening at TopGolf, under the lights on their putting green. Twelve of ASGA-DC s finest and guests were treated to a fun evening covering putting techniques, an examination of their putting technique under the watchful eye of Mr. Tomi, and some interesting French wine. The French wines were a Riesling and Pinot Noir from the Alsace appellation, and two Bordeaux from the Pomeral and Pessac-Léognan appellation. The Friday Night Nine and Wine clinics will resume next spring. ~Event Coordinator - Mark Hendrickson Saturday, September 18, Golf s Battle of the Sexes at 1757 Golf Club, Dulles, VA Saturday was a glorious end-of-summer day, for the annual Battle of the Sexes at Twenty-four golfers chipped, pitched, drove and putted their way around this course filled with hidden waterways and stone walls that tested their skills and in some cases their knowledge of curse words. In the end, the gentle, fairer sex prevailed. The women beat the men by a score of 853 to 928. On the individual challenges, the men scored much, much better -- Charlie O Dell captured two of the closest to the pins on holes 3 and 7, Dan Tierney took hole 14, former member, Howard Fields (who was in town from Hawaii) won the honors on hole 16, and Jim Johndrow won on 18. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed the outdoor terrace and food at the course restaurant. Thank you all for participating and helping make the day a big success. ~Event Coordinator - Susan Mills Friday, September 24, Happy Hour at The Chart House, Old Town Alexandria, VA Despite the heat, about 20 current (and former) ASGA members ventured out on Friday an end-of-summer HH at the Chart House in Old Town. Among those present enjoying the lovely views were Sharon Masin, Julie Tippens, Karen Farrington, Dave Sheets, Fran Mazarella, Marty Burack, Phyllis Ahlman, and Heidi Moos. JanaLee Sponberg was one of the early arrivals followed by Tony Paduano, Colleen Woods, Joel Halprin, Chris Ozylowski, and Jim Johndrow. We were able to move three tables together in the bar/ lounge area to accommodate the ASGA overflow from the bar. Tony manned the bar, while Heidi and I welcomed some of our guests, including Dagny Fulcher and Jim Wright. What a pleasant way to spend a Friday evening! Thanks to all for coming! ~Event Coordinator - Sandy Goshgarian Saturday, September 25, Golf at Northwest Park, Silver Spring, MD It was quite a bit warmer than we anticipated, but the sunny skies and good company made for a very enjoyable round of golf. Though this course doesn't have a lot of trouble on it, the Par 3s didn't invite many onto the greens. Jim Johndrow took closest to the pin on hole 4 with what may be the longest such award we've ever had. The card was marked 63' - I asked him if he meant 6'3''. Nope...63 feet took the prize. Not a single one of us hit the green on hole 7 - granted, it's 185 yards for men, 151 for women. Stan Yackoski took hole 12 at 20'7" and Jim Johndrow took hole 5 with 8'10". Ellie Hockman tried to pull a fast one by writing her name on the card with 87'. Nice try, Ellie, but you were busted! Leesa Weiss, Sheila De Turk, Joe McCloskey, Bill Isokait, Fran Mazarella, and Bob Musson rounded out the group. Thanks one and all. Event Coordinator - Katie Shea Sunday, September 26, Anniversary Golf Event at Virginia Oaks, Gainesville, VA Fall was in the air as ASGA-DC s finest and their guests arrived at Virginia Oaks to celebrate another year of fabulous social golf! All were eager and prepared to takeon the ever-challenging Virginia Oaks Golf Course. Players took full advantage of the excellent practice facilities before teeing off as scheduled. Temperatures were comfortable all day (a welcome relief from the high temps of most of September) and rain never spoiled a single golf swing during our round. The format of the day was a scramble with a couple of interesting rules: groups had to use everyone's drive twice during the round and if a group scored a par, the men had to move back a set of tees until the group scored a bogey. There was a bit of confusion on the par 5/4 rating on hole 3, but most groups played off the women's drive and counted 4 as par. It was great fun to be all working together and everyone contributing to the final scores. When we returned to the clubhouse, everything was ready for our buffet dinner under the big tent. As darkness closed in, it became a rather romantic dinner by candlelight. Even though the sky opened-up and entertained us with a lengthy and spirited downpour, we happily carried on and the tent did not leak. Of course we had our competition winners for the day. Yoneko Ramsey, Kay Woollen, Francine Vigliotti, and Sharon Geyer, Jerry Siegel, Jerry Olek, and Mark Hendrickson won closest to the pin contests. Bev Larson and Craig Niedomanski won long putt on hole 18. Craig Niedomanski, Yoneko Ramsey, Susan Mills and Jan Hren won 1 st place in the scramble team contest; Vince and Francine Vigliotti and Colleen Woods won 2 nd ; Jeff Holtmeier, Kay Woollen, Peter Smingler and Fran Mazarella won 3 rd; and, Jerry Olek, Sharon Geyer, Jerry Siegel and Jayne Lynch won 4 th. It was a wonderful celebration! Congratulations to ASGA-DC for 11 years of Great Golf, Terrific Socials and Priceless Camaraderie! ~Event Coordinator Mark Hendrickson Saturday, October 2, Golf at Stonewall Golf Club, Gainesville, VA The golf gods were smiling as 28 ASGA golfers took to the links on a perfect day with brilliant sun, balmy breezes, and a temperature in the 70 s. The course was in great shape and the views of Lake Manassas magnificent. Stonewall is a test of accuracy and target golf is necessary with so many blind shots, bunkers, and fast

3 greens. Shouts of despair were heard as the course took its toll on wayward shots. However, Vince and Francine Vigliotti and Ashton Carlton mastered the par 3s with closest to the pins and eagle-eyed Francine took home 2 closest to the pins! Mary Doherty clinched the longest putt on hole 18. Congratulations to all of our winners. The staff at Stonewall is the best- so accommodating- bag boys waiting to take your clubs, a tented check-in area, shotgun start right on time. Most of gang then met in the lovely clubhouse for "pay what you played for your first beer" (e.g. $.99 for a score of 99). The staff served beer, wine and Cosmos at our own long table. Many stayed for dinner to celebrate a gorgeous sunny day of golf with good friends. No wonder Stonewall is one of our favorite golf outings. We'll be back! ~Event Coordinator - Jeannie Bixler Friday, October 8, Happy Hour at Chef Geoff s, Tyson s Corner, VA It was a great evening for a Happy Hour! Weather was sparkling and so was the crowd. Early birds included Richard Lewis, Sandy Goshgarian, Jim Johndrow, and Mark Hendrickson. Julie Thomas, Jerry Olek, Sue Woida, Ann Webster, Dave Sheets, and Julie Carr soon joined us. Happy Hour drinks and conversation were flowing with Ellie Hochman, Bev Larson, Sharon Geyer, Phyllis Altman and guest, Stan. Chef Geoff s HH menu was tasty and filling and the wait staff was excellent. Folks from Paul s List joined in the mix and conversation, and several ASGA-DC members (Mark, Sharon, Bev) continued on to Bobby s Dance. ~Event Coordinator Heidi Moos Saturday, October 9, Golf Virginia National Golf Club, Bluemont, VA On a crisp, autumn day, 26 members came together for a beautiful day of golf at Virginia National. Despite a few "lost" golfers, the first foursome went off without a hitch! The gentlemen ruled when it came to closest to the pin and the longest putt on 18, thanks to Livingston Johnson and Patrick McVeigh! Was this supposed to be the Battle of the Sexes? The group dispersed when the Purcellville homecoming festivities trumped our restaurant plans at The Mill at Magnolias. If it makes you feel any better, they lost! But all who spent the day with ASGA were the winners! ~Event Coordinator - Terrie Patullo Saturday, October 16, Golf at Prince William Golf Club, Nokesville, VA Ten brave ASGA-DC members accepted the challenge of a tour in the Virginia countryside at Prince William Golf Club on October 16. We arrived to find one of our favorite clubhouses razed, but it is to be rebuilt in time for next season. In addition, Mother Nature gave us a 3- club wind to make a sunny October afternoon interesting. But, the golf course was in tremendous condition, with fast greens and very few leaves. We chose to have only side bets among ourselves, so no competition reports, though I did see some side bets settled in the parking lot. ~Event Coordinator Mark Hendrickson Saturday, October 23, Golf at Musket Ridge, Myersville, MD Thirteen of ASGA Washington DC's finest teed off with sunny skies and temperatures that reached in the 70s. We enjoyed not only the beautiful weather but also a course that was in outstanding condition. A wedding had taken over the clubhouse and eliminated any opportunities for eat and drink there. Heidi Moos persuaded the Musket Ridge bartender to reveal the whereabouts of an alternative après golf venue. Thanks to her resourcefulness, we ended up at the Main Cup in Middleton and it was a winner. All in all, more than half of the group found their way there and enjoyed wine, beer, excellent salads, and other fare. It is definitely a place for future outings. There were no formal contests but Livingston Johnson and Katie Shea were seen exchanging money although, who was receiving the cash was not determined by my intrepid and usually reliable spy. ~Event Coordinator - Bob Musson Saturday, October 30, Golf at Falls Road Golf Club, Potomac, VA Falls Road Golf Course in Potomac, Maryland welcomed 21 ASGA'ers on a sun-filled day, albeit briefly delayed by the early morning frost. Players, fortified with their Halloween "Trick or Treat" goodies, found a course that was in great shape and free (mostly) of fall foliage - if balls were kept in the fairway. All players competed for closest to the pin on 4 of the par-3 holes, thanks to the generosity of Falls Road PGA Pro, Jon LeSage, who donated a prize of golf for 2 at Falls Road, including riding cart, good through next year for each of the designated holes. Joe McCloskey, Katie Shea, Peter Smingler and Linda Brown were the winners. After golf, many players enjoyed sharing tales of the day's fun in the Club House while partaking of the Tournament Buffet grill grandly presented by the Falls Road staff. Thank you to everyone who came out, played a great round of golf, and contributed to another successful ASGA-DC event!
