1 CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Washington DC Chapter - American Singles Golf Association October 2009 September 4 Happy Hour Clyde s Our joint happy hour with the Paul's List crowd had almost 100 people there between all of us, and nobody got lost or hung-up in traffic! With that many people, I'm not even going to try to list who was there! The staff at Clyde's were happy to see us. September 6 Penderbrook The Sunday Labor Day weekend Staycation at Penderbrook was a blast! Narrow fairways made for some challenging drives and even better bank shots off of trees, cart paths, rocks, signs, and sometimes even the pin! Twenty-seven enthusiastic golfers came out for lunch and 18 holes of fun. Closest to the pin winners were Betsy Pond and Heidi Moos (a tie), Judith Wortman, and John Hayden. Our longest putt challenge went to Jim Johndrow who sank a long one in the final minutes. Weather was sunny and warm. Some of us were able to cool down involuntarily in the sprinklers that occasionally kicked on mid-stroke. We enjoyed the challenging water holes and recapped our adventures at the clubhouse waterhole. Many went to dinner down the road at the Blue Iguana. A good time was had by all! Thanks for all who attended! ~Heidi Moos September 11 Top Golf The rain clouds stayed away, and a number of ASGA-DC s finest made it out to Top Golf on Friday evening September 11 for A Putt, A Chip and a Taste of French Wine. The wine part I will cover in a moment. Those of you that did not attend must understand that those that attend now understand and have mastered the difference between a chip and a pitch, and how to putt a golf ball. Now for the other part of the clinic the French Wine part. For those new to our ASGA-DC chapter, the Director of Golf at TopGolf, Stephen Moskal, spent 10 years in France as a Golf Pro, including some time on the European Tour. In addition, he met his wife in France, and both of their children were born in France is considered one of the best in many years for French Wine, and that became the emphasis of this wine tasting. All of the wines are from areas near Lyon. The wines tasted are listed below: White Burgundy from Puligny-Montrachet this wine was a chardonnay grape but not like those from California some of us thought it reminded us of a Virginia Viognier. Medoc Red Bordeaux from Christian Moueix - Dry yet drinkable Château La Nerthe a Châteauneuf-du- Pape from Vaucluse Think full bodied yet very smooth Morgan A Beaujolais Villages from Château des Lumières definitely not a Nouveau Beaujolais that we are used to seeing around Thanksgiving. Everybody enjoyed the wines, though if you ask which one was the best well that the fun of wine tasting, there is not definite decision! Led by yours truly with the smiley face balloon and Paul s List Happy Hour Mogul Bill Gordon, we took over the big table in front of the open area. Among our attendees included river crossers Richard Lewis and Madeleine Burgoyne and Steve Brennan, Stan Hecht, Judith Wortman still talking about here winnings at Penderbrook, Liz Anthony, Bob Musson, Nancy Burger and Carol Placek. A number of Paul s List people were also there, including Mary Westcott and Judy House. What else happened? Well you had to be there! ~Mark September Beach Weekend The Delaware Beach and Golf event was highlighted by an ECs best friend, a quiet phone!!! Fabulous weather, and light traffic (even with many motorcycles, triathletes and partying firemen) contributed to the calming atmosphere. The floral beauty of Baywood Greens in full glory, only disturbed by our absentminded marshal. He kindly took an abandoned 7 iron to find its rightful owner and diligently checked with several groups behind us before depositing it in the lost and found. After golf we gathered on the veranda to enjoy the atmosphere, some liquid refreshments, delicious meal served at a slower lower pace. Saturday had picture perfect September weather, golf at the fine everyday day course, The Rookery, an elegant cocktail party at Mary Lou Kupfer's townhouse, with a chilly but fabulous meal at the Cultured Pearl, highlighted by the "Korean nachos". After dinner on Saturday, we finally found the mysterious "George", one golfer s prospective beach house host that never showed to let her in. Light winds on Sunday gave us an opportunity to score well at Bear Trap Dunes, Susan Sullivan came through with her first double digit round and new member LEW Webber made his first birdie ever. We bookended the weekend with small party experiences at Gary's Dewey Beach Grill for healthy meals and more liquid refreshments. The door prize winners were Ray Adame, Jane Lynch (on a rebound) and one other I can't remember - must have gotten too close the Baywood Marshal. Also, many thanks to Vince Vigliotti, for picking the spot on the calendar, even if he skipped out on us to spend his honeymoon with Francine. He broke our recent spell of rainouts the last two years. ~Bill Finneran September 20 Sligo Some of us remember years ago playing Sligo under the tutelage of Dr. Sligo himself. Dr. Sligo did not make an appearance, but some of us did walk the hills and creeks of Sligo Creek Golf Club on a beautiful mild September Sunday afternoon in what we hope is not our last visit - and yes we signed the petitions to keep Sligo open! With Bob Musson taking the first group of himself, token lefty Dave Sheets and Betsy Pond keeping both of them on the straight and narrow, we were off on time. Middle group of Leesa Weiss, Bill Isokait and published author and CSPAN guest, Peggy Orchowski, keeping in touch with the lead group. Yours truly took Nancy Bulger and newbie Carol Placek in the last group. In my group, there were some spectacular shots made by Carol and Nancy, and on the last hole, yours truly put an eight iron right over a tree to cut the dogleg and Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter s roster? 3 lay up in perfect position in front of the green. All groups on the last hole had a gallery of Sligo Creek white tail bucks watching one of them had 10 points! 4 CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION OCTOBER 2009 We have three national events headed you way, November's Battle at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, SC, New Year's in Orlando and St. Andrews in August, Registration for the New Year's event has just opened (online), about 100 are registered for Myrtle Beach already and 195 are registered for our Scotland trip. It always helps planning events when we know how many are coming, so please register early if you can. The beauty of this is that you can arrive as many as three (3) days early and stay up to three (3) days late and it will only cost you $64 per person (based on dlb. occ.) to stay an additional night, or $128 to room by yourself. Orlando offers so much more and our online website can give you links to other things to do while there, such as visiting Mickey, SeaWorld, MGM, etc. Register by October 31st and you ll receive two (2) free drink tickets! Battle At The Beach, Myrtle Beach, SC In a matter of a few weeks, over 100 people have registered for the Battle at the Beach so far, which will be held at the Marriott Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach, SC. This hotel is a AAA Four-Diamond hotel and is ranked as one of the Top 500 resorts in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. New Year s and Golf in Orlando We were here last year and it's just the perfect venue for our group. Open to all ASGA members. Yes, you are invited to the largest gathering of singles who golf in the world! Scotland is Headed Toward Sellout As of late September, nearly 200 people have signed-up for our trip to Scotland, July 31-August 8, We originally set a limit of 128 players but we've secured additional rooms and courses to accommodate our needs. St. Andrews, Scot-land is no doubt the most special place on this planet for golfers. We'll stay at the beautiful Fairmont Hotel on the outskirts of St. Andrews and on the edge of the North Sea. We have room for about another people. At this point, you'll only need to put 10% down.
