Aug. 9 - Woodfin Ridge or Village Greens with pool party to follow at Allen Sanford's home Sept 13 - Verdae Greens Oct Links O Tryon Nov. 8 - Saluda Valley Dec Sommerset Monthly Golf Tip From Our Very Own Golf Tipster, George Moureau Hi Everyone! Let me start by saying that I'm no golf pro by any stretch of the imagination however my grandfather taught me to play the game when I was 12 years old and over the last 40 years I'm sure I've hit at least a million range balls. Ben Hogan's "Five Lessons" is my "Bible" of golf and I've picked up a few insights in my never-ending quest for the "perfect" golf swing. O.K., that being said I'd like to share a few things I've learned that may or may not be of some help in your own quest to improve your score. Until someone tells me to go work on my putting, I volunteered to write a paragraph each month and share some of the things I've learned from reading and various pros that I've taken lessons from. The first observation I'd like to share is a common event that I see time and again

4 with golfers. It's very simple and doesn't involve any type of swing change. While playing I'll observe Joe or Jane golfer hop out the cart, grab a golf club, address their ball and hit it down the fairway, mutter a few things under their breath, put the club back in the bag, jump in the cart, drink a sip of beer, and trundle onward wondering what Tiger has that they don't. What Tiger does that they don't is a pre-shot routine. This routine creates a visualization of the shot and sets a tempo for the swing. Step One: Determine the distance of the shot with the fairway markers, stepping off, marked sprinkler heads or guesstimation. Step 2: select appropriate club; Step 3: Stand several paces behind your ball pick a target and visualize a line from the target to your ball. Step 4: Step up to, but far enough away from your ball to take one or two practice swings (rehearsals of the shot). Step 4: Address the ball and smote it mightily. Step 5: sip beer and trundle onward to next shot, repeating steps 1-4 until you've holed the ball and write down your birdie for score! A pre-shot routine does a great deal in not only helping you mentally plan the shot but helps settle the nerves, calm the mind and gives you a road map for each shot. There is no set in stone pre-shot routine. It can and will be different for the individual. No matter what the routine is, it is a must if you really want to start knocking strokes off your score. Rules, and More Rules Larry is playing in the local club tournament. His opponent is Tom. On the par-4, 3rd hole, Tom s third shot (a chip to the green) comes to rest 2 feet from the hole. Larry s third shot is also a chip to the green. Larry, who normally couldn t hit the broad side of a barn, lands his ball on the green with the ball rolling on-line to the hole. Larry s ball, like a cruise missile, heads directly at Tom s ball, hits it, and like a cue ball propels Tom s ball into the hole, cur-plunk. Larry s ball is deflected about 5 feet. Larry who is often referred to as the rules czar states that the Tom s ball is holed (score of 3) and his ball (Larry s ball) is lying three, no penalty and he is putting for par. Tom says he wants to get a ruling from the tournament judge before going further and possibly entering an incorrect score. He thinks Larry should incur a 2 stroke penalty and play from where his ball lies and that he (Tom) is not entitled to the gift drop into the cup, but rather should be required to place his ball back at the previous position and put for par. What is the correct ruling? A.) Larry incurs a penalty of two strokes and will play his ball as it lies. Tom must eplace his ball without penalty and continue his play. (Larry is lying 5 putting for 6. Tom is lying 3 putting for par) B.) Larry incurs a two stroke penalty and both will play their balls as they lie. Tom s ball is considered holed. (Larry is lying 5 putting for 6. Tom is holed out with a birdie 3) C.) Larry incurs a penalty of one stroke and will play his ball as it lies. Tom must replace his ball without penalty and continue his play. (Larry is lying 4 putting for bogie. Tom is lying 3 putting for par) D.) Larry incurs a one stroke penalty and both will play their balls as they lie. Tom s ball is considered holed. (Larry is hitting lying 4 putting for bogie. Tom is holed out with a birdie 3) E.) Larry incurs no penalty. Larry must play his ball as it lies. Tom must replace his ball without penalty and continue his play. (Larry is lying 3 putting for par. Tom is lying 3 putting for par) F.) Larry incurs no penalty. Larry must play his ball as it lies. Tom s ball is considered holed. (Larry is hitting lying 3 putting for par. Tom is holed out with a birdie 3) And the answer is. E.) Larry incurs no penalty. Larry must play his ball as it lies. Tom must replace his ball without penalty and continue his play. (Larry is lying 3 putting for par. Tom is lying 3 putting for par) Tom s ball was at rest when struck and moved by Larry s ball. Rule 18 (The Ball at Rest Moved) section mandates that if a ball at rest is moved by another ball after a stroke, the ball that was moved must be replaced, to the position it was at when moved, without penalty. Rule 19 (Ball in Motion Deflected or Stopped) section mandates that if a ball in motion after a stroke is deflected or stopped by a ball in play and at rest, the player (Larry in this case) must play his ball as it lies and there is no penalty. Larry would have incurred a two stroke penalty had the same situation occurred when both balls were sitting on the green and his ball hit Tom s ball while putting. 7 CELEBRATING 15YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION JULY 2008 Tom Alsop woke-up on Wednesday, June 11th a new man, a little sore but with potentially another fifty years in him. The day before, he had successful quadruple bypass surgery. Yes, maybe too many hot dogs at the turn or maybe too many rides in the golf cart when he should have been walking. Literally two days before ASGA s largest event of the year at Pinehurst, Alsop found out he had to have bypass surgery. Knowing surgery was a couple of weeks off, I just wanted to focus on doing a good job and taking care of people s needs. Some players were asking why aren t you playing golf? and I gave them the same reason as I haven t played golf at the event in the past I enjoy taking pictures of each player out on the course. Although my doctor wanted to schedule it before Pinehurst, I pleaded with him to postpone it. I suppose because he s a golfer himself, he allowed me to finish the event. Resting easy at his home in Charlotte, Alsop reflects on the experience. It does make you think this is pretty serious stuff. I could miss my tee time for the rest of my life! We ve had a lot of members go through a lot of things in their lives. You get close to them and then every now and then, something tragic happens and we lose them. It s easy to get philosophical when faced with something this dramatic, Alsop continues. We all pray that we can enjoy life to its fullest and that we fulfill our given purpose. As we grow older, each of us realize we have fewer and fewer years on this planet. We want to push away Father Time with the longest club in our bag. And most of the time, we re successful. We re fortunate we live in the 21st century. Regardless, major surgery makes you reflect on the important things in life. Pinehurst Went Well - New Year s is Next National Event We had 310 people attend Memorial Day Weekend in Pinehurst at the reviews went well. For 2009, we re looking for locations. Criteria: should be mid-atlantic where at least 50% of the attendees can drive to the event, and keep us somewhat in one location. We d prefer a location with three golf courses coming out of the same clubhouse (due to members driving together). If you have suggestions for Memorial Day next year, please go to the CONTACT US button at SinglesGolf.com. We will announce our New Year s location by mid-to-late August. Inquiries went out to a number of locations this past April. Upcoming Multi-Chapter Events Sea Palms Weekend / St. Simon's Island - August 15-17, Hosted by the Jacksonville chapter. It is our policy to post this in this newsletter as well: Membership, Equality, Marriage and Termination of Membership (established April, 2008) ASGA membership is open to any person, 21 years of age or older, who is unmarried (i.e. never married, divorced, legally separated or widowed) without regard to race, creed, gender or national origin. Any official event sponsored by the national organization or local chapters must be open to all members on an equal basis subject to space availability. Members who marry during the term of their dues period shall remain members until the end of their dues period. The national office has the right to decline or terminate any member's membership if the national office determines that such membership is not in the best interest of ASGA.
