1 CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Kansas City Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - July 2008 President s Report Kudos to those who coordinated our June golf outings: Larry Shockley, Falcon Valley 9/wine/dine; Naomi Burwell, the tournament at Adams Pointe; and Debbie Crowe, our glow-ball night golf adventure at Longview. We appreciate all of you who volunteer your time and talents to coordinate and assist with our events. We certainly can t do all that we do without you. If you missed our night glow ball event at Longview and late night breakfast at Debbie Opfer s home, it was a hoot. Laughter could be heard all over that Par 3 course as the headless glow necklaces and bracelets bobbed around the course. Now we know who our Night Owls are! Interest in KCSGA is still running high as seven potential members attended our June 19 th meeting at Old Chicago. Our thanks to you, our members, for making this a fun organization that others want to join. July is packed with lots of upcoming events at Falcon Lakes (7/4), Leawood South (7/11) and Alvamar (7/27), along with 20 golfers from our group gracing the mountainous courses in Colorado. We hope they have a fun and safe trip. Please join us at our next monthly meeting at Old Chicago, Metcalf, Overland Park, Kan., on Thursday, July 17. Komen Tournament, August 23 at Winterstone Please solicit an item from your favorite restaurant, store or pro shop that can be used in the raffle to raise funds to be donated to the Rally for the Cure. If half of you solicit one item for the raffle, the event will be a huge success. Be one of the half and help support our annual to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation and help fight breast cancer. Please contact Maureen McArdle: mbmcardle@hotmail.com From the Social Side Night Golf was a new experience for most golfers. It was a beautiful evening under the stars. Tiki torches glowed on the tee boxes, the greens and sand traps were illuminated with glow sticks and you could observe golfers as they scampered across the fairways with trails of green from the glow jewelry. Laughter and shouts of excitement filled the air the entire night. JB Smith hit a hole-in-one on hole #2, which ultimately won his team first place with a score of 26 and only 11 putts. The first place team was JB Smith, Nancy Walz, Tom Ritchie and Rose Richers. Second place went to Rob Almquest, Veda Landon, Paul Smolinski and Debbie Opfer, with a score of 26 and 14 putts. Breakfast and mimosas were served at Debbie Opfer s home. Prizes were awarded to Jack Davis and Jim Hamilton for closest to the pin and to Rob Almquest for longest putt. The pajama prizes went to Diane Clevenger, Veda Landon, Larry Shockley and Stewart Darnall (pictures on pages to follow). The next social event will be held Saturday, July 26, at 8:00 p.m., at the Kearney Amphitheater to hear a little Beatle music. More information regarding tickets will be sent by . 5 CELEBRATING 15YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION JULY 2008 Tom Alsop woke-up on Wednesday, June 11th a new man, a little sore but with potentially another fifty years in him. The day before, he had successful quadruple bypass surgery. Yes, maybe too many hot dogs at the turn or maybe too many rides in the golf cart when he should have been walking. Literally two days before ASGA s largest event of the year at Pinehurst, Alsop found out he had to have bypass surgery. Knowing surgery was a couple of weeks off, I just wanted to focus on doing a good job and taking care of people s needs. Some players were asking why aren t you playing golf? and I gave them the same reason as I haven t played golf at the event in the past I enjoy taking pictures of each player out on the course. Although my doctor wanted to schedule it before Pinehurst, I pleaded with him to postpone it. I suppose because he s a golfer himself, he allowed me to finish the event. Resting easy at his home in Charlotte, Alsop reflects on the experience. It does make you think this is pretty serious stuff. I could miss my tee time for the rest of my life! We ve had a lot of members go through a lot of things in their lives. You get close to them and then every now and then, something tragic happens and we lose them. It s easy to get philosophical when faced with something this dramatic, Alsop continues. We all pray that we can enjoy life to its fullest and that we fulfill our given purpose. As we grow older, each of us realize we have fewer and fewer years on this planet. We want to push away Father Time with the longest club in our bag. And most of the time, we re successful. We re fortunate we live in the 21st century. Regardless, major surgery makes you reflect on the important things in life. Pinehurst Went Well - New Year s is Next National Event We had 310 people attend Memorial Day Weekend in Pinehurst at the reviews went well. For 2009, we re looking for locations. Criteria: should be mid-atlantic where at least 50% of the attendees can drive to the event, and keep us somewhat in one location. We d prefer a location with three golf courses coming out of the same clubhouse (due to members driving together). If you have suggestions for Memorial Day next year, please go to the CONTACT US button at SinglesGolf.com. We will announce our New Year s location by mid-to-late August. Details TBA August, Clarification Policy Announced Back in April, a new policy relative to membership terms was announced via the website in order to clarify a few things. It is our policy to post this in this newsletter as well: Membership, Equality, Marriage and Termination of Membership (established April, 2008) ASGA membership is open to any person, 21 years of age or older, who is unmarried (i.e. never married, divorced, legally separated or widowed) without regard to race, creed, gender or national origin. Any official event sponsored by the national organization or local chapters must be open to all members on an equal basis subject to space availability. Members who marry during the term of their dues period shall remain members until the end of their dues period. The national office has the right to decline or terminate any member's membership if the national office determines that such membership is not in the best interest of ASGA. In such cases, dues will be refunded on a prorata basis.
