1 CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Kansas City Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - June 2009 President s Note Summer, Summer, Summer! It won t be long now. Last month we had a great outing to the Outlaw course at Paradise Point. A big thank you to Frank Pianalto for making it a fun event, and also to Patrick Daily his assistance. Bev Hembree and Curtis McCall planned our Memorial weekend event. It was held at Dubs Dred this year and a good time was had by all. Thanks to you both. We now have one holiday event completed without rain. Will this be the year we get through all three holidays dry? June will be busy. We are off to the Lake this month for 3 days of golf. Night Golf, a new club favorite, is planned at Longview on the 13 th. If you have never watched a parade of glowing neck & wrist bands walk across a pitch black course, there are laughs you have yet to laugh. On the 28 th we will be in Belton playing at Creekmoor. The course in its second year and we are all looking forward to playing it again. We are looking at having a fun golf/ social evening at St. Andrews driving range. It would feature some instruction, some beverages and some snacks, and perhaps some laughs. Watch for the notices and signups for these and future events. We are just getting started. Because playing golf is what we love to do. ~Maureen McArdle, President Great Day at the Outlaw Course in Smithville Saturday found 47 golfers venturing north to Smithville to play the Outlaw Course at Paradise Point. The club had played the other course in the past, so all were greeted by a new experience with the Outlaw course, cool weather, and the challenges of 5 inches of rain the day before. Pace of play was great with everyone in the club house well before dark. Several new members joined the group for the first time, along with other prospective members. In future years we will have the option of selecting between the two courses at Paradise Pointe. 3 Know Your Foursome Pat Dowling is a graduate of KC Junior, KU, and Avilla. He builds computer systems. I wondered if could build a user friendly one?? While voted the guy with the best smile, he hikes, bikes and plays golf. You might see him in a water exercise class and still tried to dance, but has failed classes twice. He has spent several summers in Yellowstone working in the park. Pat is the oldest of 9 children and his sister is also featured in this article. During the winter Dowling works for the IRS and volunteers as a medicare advisor. Pat wants to see Scandinavia, India, and more of the United States. He wants to winter in Florida, working for Disney and getting to play their many golf courses. A graduate of Sam Houston University at Huntsville, Bard Gaulik (Polish) is still working. She is the sister of Pat and number 4 in the line of siblings. Her degree in marketing has helped make her a hell of a woman sells person. She sells raw meat. Only kidding. She does sell meat, just not raw. Kayaking, golf, camping and gardening fill her down time. Bard is trying to get rid of her collectables, not enough room. She entertains often and is know for her Halloween Party. Wanting to move to a golf community some place warm is her dream. She would also like to see China and Australia. Bob Bearclaw Barraclough travels from Topeka to play with us. The Bearclaw is used when he wants the benefits of being a native American. As a conflagration annihilator, firefighter, he worked until recently and now wants to travel, play golf, and build furniture. He leads a sheltered life, low key and low profile. He wants to do what I do best just as soon as I figure it out. Brother and Sister members Mr. Bearclaw enjoying monthly meeting June 28th at Creekmoor The June tournament is scheduled for Sunday, June 28th at Creekmoor Golf Course in Raymore with the first tee time starting at 1:00. The cost is $61. This tournament is being hosted by Bob Haefele with the help of Rhonda Shorten. It will be a modified shamble format, which will basically be a shamble with some Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter s roster? You can now do this yourself. You can update your address, phone, add your cell phone, change handicap, etc. Doing it yourself takes the burden off of your chapter leaders so they can spend more time on the golf course and less time on the computer!

4 modifications on specific holes. Arrangements have made to eat and drink at the golf course after play where we will tally up the scores and award prize money. The course is relatively new. Eventually it may become private, so this may be your one big chance to play a remarkable course. So far we have 45 golfers signed up. We will fill up to 48 players and then start a waiting list. If you want to be put on the list, please Rhonda at rshorten@ kc.rr.com. We would like to have everyone's handicap (or average 18 hole score) in order to make the pairings as fair as possible. If we do not have a handicap (or average score) for you, we will be calling or ing you to provide one. Saturday after golf at Old Kinderhook Jean Butterfield has set up a Buffet dinner there if we want to participate..it will be $ per person and will be a 2 meat Buffet.. I need a head count up front so we can tell them how many. Also we will need to pay up front but we can collect that at the lake. We will be playing these courses. I will make the pairings for the 3 days: Friday - Osage National 1st tee time is 12:57 cost $ tax Saturday- Old Kinderhook 1st tee time is 1:00 cost $ tax pay at the course Sunday -Seasons Ridge 1st tee time 8:00 cost $ tax pay at the course Remember what happens at the lake stays at the lake. Pajama Night Golf Join us for a fun-filled night of laughter & see who is really good in the dark. Pajamas are optional, but prizes will be awarded for sexiest, manliest etc. If you have not notified me regarding Night Golf, please do so ASAP. The Longview course provides us with glow balls and glow jewelry. They also set up the course with torches on the tee boxes, glow sticks around the greens, and hazards. Debbie Opfer has graciously offered her home again this year for our after-golf breakfast. Dub s Dread Sunday, May 24 th turned out to be a great day for golf at Dub s Dread. We had 39 players participate and every foursome was ready and waiting for their tee time. In fact, the last group was able to tee off ten minutes ahead of their scheduled time. Great Job! After golf, we gathered at the club house and kept the staff busy preparing food and pouring drinks as we sat out on the deck socializing and recalling the great and not so great shots we made. Thanks to Curtis for making arrangements with the course manager. What a great group we have! Bev Hembree runs a great event at Dub's Dred Mountain Fall Weekend at Lake Lure We are sending you this update for your information and to share with members of the Kansas City Chapter. As of May 31 st we have 87 folks who have indicated their intent to attend this year s Mountain Fall Weekend at Lake Lure. This leaves room for only 41 more. Since we are filling up fast (and had to turn folks away last year) we wanted to make sure that those who plan to attend get their registrations in early. 6 CELEBRATING 16YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION JUNE 2009 Show of Hands Convinced Us We ve had a few members ask when will we do a trip to Scotland again? Well, at our final dinner at The Homestead / Memorial Day Weekend Event with 212 members present, we did a show of hands to determine if there was anyone else interested. Without question, at least half of the audience raised their hands. So now we re at work preparing for such a trip which will most likely be during July or August, We are working through an association of tour operators which will help us prepare an agenda. From that, a request for proposal (RFP) will go out to a number of the association s member-tour operators. We re not looking for the internet special of the week. ASGA will only work with tour operators who ll take care of our members and provide what we want. So stay tuned. We ll send out a national survey soon to determine your thoughts and wishes and will develop a web page to keep you updated: SinglesGolf.com/scotland Meet More Singles at Multi-Chapter Events ASGA, through its member chapters, offer other events which allow you to meet singles from other chapters. All members are invited and encouraged to attend these Multi-Chapter Events. There s nothing like meeting up with a bunch of other singles for a weekend of golf. Each package is basically the same but there are differences, so we suggest you visit the website for the event. And, if you re chapter s interested in hosting one of these events, prepared to put a lot of work into it. But the reward of having singles play in your city and play your favorite courses is a life experience, well, hopefully! Contact ASGA to clear the date and then get your Board of Directors to give local approval. Then, start putting it together! A Mid-Year Report As we reach the middle of our calendar year, we look behind and we look forward. For chapter presidents, your job is halfway done! For most members, it s simply time for more golf. We value our membership in ASGA. We re all single and if we haven t done so already, we look forward to the potential of a great relationship. Many members have said they re not interested in meeting anyone, they just want to play more golf. But as the saying goes, we all have the word SINGLE on our foreheads. When you show up for a meeting, people know you re single. If you don t show-up for your membership meeting, think of your potential loss. Just about every member who s become attached with another member didn t expect it to happen that way, or right away. But unless you show-up in life, life won t show-up for you. In spite of the economy, we ve grown this past year primarily because you, our member, have taken a little time to spread the word about our organization. Our display stands have been a big reason for our growth, but they don t do us any good sitting in a closet. You have to request one and if you do, we re happy to ship one to you. So let us know simply by calling or ing us. In October of each year, each chapter elects a new president for the term beginning January 1.
