This is my last article as your Prez has been an exceptional year for me, and I think for the club as well. It wouldn t have been such a success without the support of all of you and especially the hard work of the board: Rhonda Shorten, Joyce Smith, Konnee Cook, Dohn Kennyhertz, Barb Gawlik, Bob Haefele, Alleyne Johnson and Larry Shockley. Even the weather cooperated this year! I can only wish a year as good as this to all of you in I would also like to thank all of those who volunteered to host the golf events. You made everything go very smoothly. Remember the voluntary gift exchange at our next general meeting, Thursday, December 20. If you choose to, bring a wrapped gift, no more than $15, and put your name on the tag. If it would be best suited for a man or woman, be sure to add that to the tag. If it is generic, just your name is enough. I would like to wish everyone a joyous holiday season and a peaceful and prosperous New Year. We are never far from the golf course, whether physically, or in our minds. So until next season, I will leave you with this final thought: If there is a ball on the fringe and one in the bunker, your ball is in the bunker. Pat was born and raised in Kansas City, and has one older brother. Pat has two children, Billy and Debbie, and five grandchildren. He is a retired pilot (TWA & American Airlines), retiring in Besides golf, Pat s hobbies include bike riding, tennis, fishing, hunting, flying, motorcycle riding and bowling. Sandy K was playing golf with Pat s daughter, Debbie, and told her about KCSGA. Pat called ASGA and joined. He has enjoyed meeting the members of KCSGA. Be sure to say Hello and introduce yourself to Pat when you see him at an upcoming event. 3 November 10th - Dinner/Dance at Leawood South Country Club 54 members and guests attended the Nov 10th dinner/dance at Leawood South Country Club. Fun was had by all. Dinner was salmon or prime rib with a delicious salad and dessert of chocolate mousse and ice cream. Chris, our DJ, played all kinds of music from the 60s, 70s and 80s bringing back memories for all of us, but mostly creating great memories of a fun evening. Awards were given for eagles, birdies, chips ins, acknowledgements of team accomplishments including best team name of Howel n Wolff. Acknowledgement of hole in ones for two of our members Rob Almquist and Larry Davenport was also given. It was a great ending to a wonderful fun year of golf for our group. 4 Irish Travels Six of our members, Luisa Cadavillo, Barb Gawlik, Bob Haefele, Dohn Kennyhertz, Maureen McArdle, and Joyce Smith enjoyed a 9 day trip to Ireland in October, following the well known KC Irish band, The Elders. The group made their connection in New York just before Hurricane Sandy hit; they closed the airport 2 hours later. The group arrived in Dublin Monday mid day and hit the ground running, spending the day walking Dublin and seeing St Stephen's Green, Trinity College & the Book of Kells, Grafton Street and stopping to eat at the Bleeding Horse. Bob had his first Guinness and others had their first of many Irish seafood chowder. Attending their first Elder's concert rounded out the evening. Much of their time was spent on a tour bus as they traveled from one destination to another. No one minded because the view was so beautiful. Everything was always green. Beautiful vistas wherever you turned. Every village visited was unique and similar at the same time. Here are some of the highlights of their tour of Ireland: Athlone, Ashford Castle in the village of Cong where the "Quiet Man" was filmed. The Castle is now a beautiful 5 star hotel. Then on to Kilronan Castle, Westport, woolen mills, Donegal Castle, Dingle Pennisular, Gallway, Killarney, Blarney & Blarney Castle, Avoca, Arklow, Wicklow & back to Dublin. Everyone was thrilled to see them (with over 20% unemployment, they love their tourists). Many Irish coffees, pints and Jameson's were consumed by some, but not all. It's just too easy. There could be 3 pubs in every block! The group heard great performances by the Elders and Searson (band of 3 sisters from Canada). Some concerts were in public venues, others in the castles dungeon bars, just for the group. One could witness 3 seasons of weather in one day, waking to sunshine, turning to cloudy mist, a temporary down pour and even sleet. Several rainbows were seen, but no pot of gold. No one seemed to mind the weather; it was just part of the Irish experience. The group agreed Ireland is a beautiful, beautiful country & Maureen, for one, is already planning her return trip.

My opponent hit his tee shot deep into the woods and brambles. He declared a provisional ball and struck it fine. At the point where the ball entered it was clear from the fairway that it was highly unlikely the ball would be found. However, he felt that because he had declared a provisional ball he was obliged to go into the dense woodland and search for it. Was he obliged to search for the ball and if so what definition is attached to search? It was my view even from the edge of the fairway that he could declare his first shot lost making the provisional ball the ball in play. AND THE ANSWER IS... A player is not obligated to search for his original ball. As soon as he hits his provisional from the area his original is likely to be, the provisional becomes his ball in play and the original is officially lost. There are a number of reasons why a player might want to forego searching for his original ball: It is clear that the ball will not be found without an extensive search by players wielding machetes. Pace of play The player has hit the ball so deep into a wooded area that he realizes that if he finds it he would need to return to the tee to hit another ball because it would require several shots to get the ball back onto the fairway. Don t forget that if you find your original, you must abandon the provisional and proceed with the original. If you decide to declare the original unplayable, and your only viable option is to return to where you hit your previous shot, you must do that. You may not say: My original is unplayable. I will continue play with my provisional. If you continue with the provisional, you will be playing a wrong ball (loss of hole in match play; two-stroke penalty in stroke play, plus you must go back and play the correct ball).
