1 CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Kansas City Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - July 2009 President s Note June brought us heavy rains, then, intense heat, but we played on.. sometimes! We had wonderful trip to Lake of the Ozarks, playing Osage National, Old Kinderhook and our new favorite Sunday course, Redfield. Shorty Pants was the dancing destination on Friday night. Thank you to Larry Maddox for arranging our trip, Veda Landon for handling the onsite logistics, and Jean Butterfield for arranging a wonderful buffet for us at Old Kinderhook. We had absolutely glorious weather for our outing at Creekmoor this year. Bob Haefele and Rhonda Shorten put together a great tournament. And we enjoyed our post-round festivities on the patio. Thanks to you both. July is a very busy month. For golf we have 4 th holiday scramble at Falcon Lakes, a Wine & Dine at Hillcrest and a tournament at Sycamore Ridge. On the Social side upcoming events are Dinner and Jazz at the Gaslight Grill, Night Golf and a Social/Golf Clinic at St. Andrews. We ll be busy until the end of October with three golf events in each month. Marleen is looking into a trip to a T-Bones game and we might squeeze in a special 9 Wine & Dine. So watch your s, check the calendar and try to keep up! 2 Kansas City Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association President Maureen McArdle Vice President Sandy Kolderup TM Golf Chairperson Larry Shockley Lake of Ozarks Trip June 5-7 Thanks to Larry Maddox for organizing 23 KCSGA golfers to play 3 courses at the Lake of the Ozarks the first weekend of June. We played the River & Mountain courses at Osage National on Friday, enjoyed food and drink together on the patio, and then trooped over to Shorty Pants to dance to the music of Johnny I and the Receders. After the traditional morning shopping at the outlet mall, we took on the challenges at Old Kinderhook on Saturday afternoon. Thanks for the assist from member, Jean Butterfield, who arranged for a tasty buffet dinner at the club following golf. The four winners from our proximity contests that day were longest putts, Barb Higgins and Wendell Coon along with closest to the pins Veda Landon and Frank Pianalto. Frank Pianalto s two sons, Dan from Garden City, and Nick (who was home on leave from Iraq) joined him for golf at the Lake. Our group enjoyed the rest of the evening socializing on the open air deck at Old Kinderhook under a full moon. Undaunted by a few sprinkles on Sunday morning, we played at Redfield Golf & Country Club in Eugene, MO, just a few miles past Eldon on our way home. This semi-private, links style course was new to us but most everyone agreed, it was a nice finish to a great weekend at the Lake. Below is a picture of some of the golfers that could not make it to the Ozarks, so they spent the afternoon on Lake Winnebago. 4 Mike Harris Makes a Milestone Mike Harris was treated to an unexpected surprise, when he walked into the ole watering hole Sunday afternoon. Friends and family packed the Scoreboard Bar and Grill to wish Mike the best as he moves on to another decade. Mike, one of the original singles, hosts several tournaments every year, helped put together a trip to Colorado for golf (which he did not get to attend), and would be one of the first to greet you if you happen to be at an event. Congratulations from all of us. This was a surprise. 91.9% indicated they would either do it or consider doing it once more details were made available. The dorm idea works well as it gives everyone their own private room and bathroom at a college in St. Andrews. Members Respond to Survey On June 25th, the national office surveyed its membership asking if they d be interested in a trip to Scotland how much they d be willing to spend, and how long should they want to stay... along with a host of other questions. Over 300 folks answered these questions using the popular SurveyMonkey.com portal. Of this number, 82% identified themselves as a member of ASGA and 11% as former members. 6% said they'd join ASGA if we did this trip. Here are the questions and how they responded: 1. Realizing cost and other factors will need to be considered, generally speaking, would you be interested in being part of a group trip to Scotland for ASGA members in the Summer of 2010? Result: Yes=92.5% 2. Male/Female: Result: 63.7% female; 36.3% mail (2 girls for every boy... isn't that a familiar song - and now, we know who has all the money as well! So pay attention guys... we need you for those cool nights in Edinburgh! 3. Number of nights: 5-6 nights (12.7%), 7-8 nights (45.9%), 9-10 nights (34.7%) and nights (6.6%). 4. Quality of hotel accommodations: Scottish Version of a Motel 6 6.6% Any 3-star hotel 47.9% Upper-Middle Class 44.0% Something "ritzy" 1.5% 6. Preferred Time of Year May, Highs around 57 each day - $2250 (flights are less $$) 11.2% June, Highs around 62 each day - $ % July, Highs around 66 each day - $ % August, Highs around 64 each day - $ % September, Highs around 60 each day - $2500 (flights are less $$) 38.2%. 7. How much golf would you like to play: As much as possible 39.0% Every other day 46.3% 1-2 rounds only 13.5% 8. Is playing The Old Course at St. Andrews a must-play golf course if you take this trip? Yes=60.6 No= What other activities would you like to do: Taking a day to tour a town, local historical sites, etc. 71.8% Taking a day to tour the countryside, castles, etc. 87.3% Having a day where I can do what I want with no groupsponsored activities. 50.2% Going shopping 30.9% Taking a boat trip or short plane trip to another island 32.4% Tour some of Scotland's whiskey distilleries 41.7% Head up to the mountains, take a hike, climb or go skiing 23.2% 10. Which chapters showed the most interest: Washington, DC - 20 members interested in attending, followed by Chicago (19), Tampa Bay (14), Southeast Michigan, Indianapolis, Orlando, Philadelphia, Sacramento at 10 each. Just about all of our 70 chapters nationwide had at least one individual interested in attending. Names were not collected during this survey.
