1 CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Kansas City Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - April 2008 President s Report Well, again, I am anticipating warmer KC weather for golf, but not yet. Our late Spring weather makes us all anxious for the season to start. If the sign-ups for the Royal Meadows 18 Wine & Dine on April 5th and our 18-hole outing at new venue, Creekmoor in Raymore, Mo, on April 19th are any indication this promises to be another banner year for KCSGA. Larry Shockley has assembled another great line-up of events for Dust off those clubs and join us. We all want to extend our thanks to Maureen McArdle and her committee for a very successful Silent Auction at our March 20th monthly meeting. Read more about the auction in another article in this newsletter. Please join us at our next monthly meeting at Old Chicago, Metcalf, Overland Park, KS on Thursday, April 17th. Social time 6-6:30 p.m., meeting 6:30-7 p.m. Keep em in the short grass. ~Veda Landon, President Greetings, Fun- Loving KCSGA Golfers Spring weather has (almost) reached KC and so has the 2008 golf season. A current list of the upcoming social events will be posted on the KCSGA web site soon. Please note that the 1st Friday dinner locations will be changing monthly. Due to scheduled golf events in June and July there will be no 1st Friday, although a post-golf dinner location will announced. The 1st Friday in May will be held in the new Power & Light District, either at McFadden s or Raglands. After dinner we plan to move to the new dueling piano bar, Howl at the Moon. Make a note of the Night Golf tourney at Longview Lake in Lee s Summit, June28th at 8:30 p.m. Pajamas are the required dress code. Please feel free to initiate or suggest a social outing or event. You made this year s Silent Auction a huge success. Thanks to your hard work, great donations and generous bidding, the Silent Auction raised $1,885. That will make a nice addition to our treasury and help defray the cost of our annual banquet. More importantly, a nice donation will be made to the Special Olympics. I know you were a little cramped that night, but you probably saw someone you had not seen in a while. A good time was has by all. (But, the next Silent Auction will not be held at Old Chicago!) Ringing in the New Year with National SGA in Tampa ~Naomi Burrwell What better way to ring out 2007 and ring in 2008 than by playing golf in Tampa, Fla.? The weather perfect. The sunshine perfect. The golf courses perfect. My game left something to be desired. Just goes to show, you really can t have everything. Each day I was paired with different people, so I made 12 new friends. The following two days, we played another golf course with different formats each day and the full compliment of singles. Evening dining events were included, so we had time to visit with our new friends. New Years Eve was the real deal. We even had a junior red carpet to watch all the ladies arrive in their finest plumage. It was quite a style show, and our own Lola probably had the best gown. We had cocktails then dinner, and dancing rounded out the evening. I have to compliment the men; they did a wonderful job keeping all the ladies twirling on their heels. Congrats, Sandy! Sandy Kolderup, KCSGA secretary, is smiling because she knows she s going to have more time for golf, family and fun now that she s retired from that world outside of golf (commonly known as work). Her last day in the old world was Fri, March 28. Wendell, Don, Paul and Frank (L-R) anxiously await the outcome of their Silent Auction bids (or the K-State game?). March 2008 Meeting There was more than just NCAA March Madness (congrats to KSU on thumping USC) during the monthly meeting March 20 th ; there was KCSGA Silent Auction madness going on, too. The room was literally packed with people who got caught up in the excitement of bidding on an amazing assortment of trinkets treasures. Larry Shockley (L), golf chair, and Mike Harris (of hole-in-one fame) prove that even Tigers and Jayhawks can be friends in KCSGA. Veda Landon, KCSGA president, presides over a brief business meeting amidst the Silent Auction mania. The always adorable Debbie Crowe, social chair, and the indisputably dapper Jess Lininger share a moment and some space among the crowd at the Silent Auction.

4 CELEBRATING 15YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION APRIL 2008 Event Dates: Thursday, May 22 Sunday, May 25, Attended Past Two Years It s hard to imagine the level of excitement we re hearing from all corners of the earth about our upcoming Reunion at Pinehurst. There were two from our chapter last year and now we have eight coming, was a recent note sent to the national office. Comments like that are causing the level of registrations to continue to climb. It s anticipated to be another sellout again. Last year, we had to arrange overflow hotels at a couple of local hotels off property just to accommodate the number of people attending. We contracted form more rooms this year and more rooms at the Carolina Hotel, where most of the social activities will occur. We re well-set to handle 400+ again this year. Register by April 18 for Free Drink Tickets! There are always those last minute attendee-wannabees who d like to get in so to keep yourself from being one of those, register today. You can register online, or you can register using the form enclosed with this newsletter. A form can obtained at the event website: and at this same website, you ll now be able to register online. Website has full details The standard package is a great deal. If you priced this on your own, you d easily pay twice as much as what you get as an ASGA member. You can t fine a value like this at any great golf resort in the country. Of course, outside of everything Pinehurst has to offer, you get to meet hundreds of singles from various ASGA chapters. As with all ASGA multi-chapter events, you must be a member to attend. Here s what s included in the standard package: 4 days / 3 night s stay, based on double occupancy 2 rounds of golf, cart, range balls, prizes for winners + welcoming gift for all 6 food functions: cocktail party (with 2 free drink tickets if you register by April 18), cookout Friday after golf, Saturday sitdown dinner and 3 lavish buffet breakfasts (live piano playing!) Dancing with our DJ on 1st and 3rd nights (does he dance?) All resort service fees and taxes. The resort service fee pays for bicycle rental, practice green, afternoon tea, on-site trans- portation, fitness center, tennis courts, outdoor pools, etc. In addition, Pinehurst is offering ASGA members a coupon good towards a 25% discount on spa services or one round of golf club rentals. See SinglesGolf.com for details on this coupon. Non-golf packages are available and non-hotel packages are available only to our Pinehurst chapter members. Please review the Pinehurst.com website and check out their hotel accommodations. They re offering the Carolina Inn, the Holly Inn, Manor Inn and their condos again. In addition to these hotels, if your chapter (or group of friends) would like to get eight (8) of your members together and get a villa, which has a common living room and kitchen facility, review the Pinehurst.com website and indicate such on your registration form. Packages start at $512 per person, based on double occupancy and $779 per person based on single occupancy. If you priced this event on its own, you d easily pay $1200-$1300 (dbl. occ.) for all that s included. An optional round at 9:00am on Sunday is offered as well. Again, a registration form is enclosed with this newsletter and you can also obtain one at Google Docs and Spreadsheets It s rare that we mention other websites out there in internetworld, but here s something that can help you and your chapter. Google, several months ago, introduced Google Docs and Spreadsheets, which could be used by your chapter as a way of signing-up members for golf outings. So it s 11pm on Friday night, all of a sudden, you ve realized there s a golf outing tomorrow at 1pm and you d like to play in it. It s too late to call the event organizer, so you simply go to Google Docs and Spreadsheets, look up the event, and you now see that there is an opening. You simply add your name to the list and you're in! It almost that simple. Each member who wants to use the service must set-up an account with Google but the cool thing about this site is that it allows anyone in the chapter to collarborate, i.e. contribute something to the document or event. So if you re running a social and everyone has to bring a covered dish, you can see what others are bringing so there won t be 12 people bringing cheese balls and bean dip.
