1 CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Kansas City Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - April 2010 President s Note Gosh, another month has flown by. We continue to have a good turn out for our monthly meetings. The sign up sheets at the meeting were filling up fast for Creekmoor, St. Andrews and the outing at Lake of the Ozarks. Look for more s about these events and be sure you notify the chairman if you plan to attend. Sadly, for the second year in a row, Casino Night was cancelled due to weather. You wouldn't think that should happen this late in March. But it has been a strange winter! The Casino Night has been rescheduled for April 24 and more information will be coming out about it. You don't need to do anything if you are signed up. But do let Deb Opfer know if you have paid and you will not be able to attend. Or if you can now attend, but sure to send her your $15 check. By the time this newsletter is in print -- the weather will have finally turned the corner (looks like 60's & 70's -- March is going out like a lamb) so I hope all of you will have an opportunity to get out and play! The GM meeting will be on April 15th, so get your taxes turned in early and then plan on a fun night at Birdie's. See you all then. ~Sandy Kolderup, President Getting To Know KCSGA Members Mara Kelley hails from St. Louis originally and moved to Overland Park in Mara taught 4th grade right out of college and then became a stay-athome mom with two daughters and a son. When her youngest was in 4th grade, she went back to school for her masters degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology. At the time, one of her children was in grade school, one in junior high, and one in high school while Mara was in college! Her kids thought that was great! Mara worked with brain injured patients in hospital rehab units for 15 years as a therapist and Director of Speech and Hearing. Fourteen years ago, when the hospital cut out management level employees, Mara then concentrated on golf, watercolor painting, reading and gardening. During the winter, Mara volunteers as a reading tutor for kindergartners at a local elementary school and volunteers at St. Joseph Hospital in both the Transport department and the Gift Shop. Mara s 7 grandchildren, ranging in age from 7 to 14-2 girls and 5 boys, all live here within a stone s throw from her. She reports Life is Good! The 5 boys will be joining a Junior Golf program this summer. Be sure to say Hello and introduce yourself to Mara when you see her at an upcoming event. Did we have fun? Yes, especially if you were a KU fan. Us Tiger fans had some moments, but they were fleeting. So conversation turned to other interests. You might want to ask Dohn to explain what 75% actually means. Definitions varied, but the question was left to Dohn to quantify. Big thank you to everyone who contributed to the discourse and amazing culinary delights. 4 Members at March General Meeting Bob & Luisa Golf Tip ~Larry Maddox Spring Warm-up Now that spring is upon us and the warm weather will be returning to our area, it is that time of year to dust off the clubs and get back onto the practice area and rehearse those fundamentals. Fundamentals are perhaps the most important area of the golf swing for beginners and are even more important for the tour pro s. Remember the word GAP. Those are our fundamentals. It stands for Grip, Alignment, and Posture. The most important factor when it comes to grip is that the left hand is holding the club in the fingers. Too often I see amateurs that have their grip too much in the palm of the left hand. This will rob the player of distance and control. To get the proper left hand grip place the club off your left foot with the grip behind your body. When you let your hand hold the club from this position you will notice that you will be holding the grip in the fingers of your left hand. Now you can bring the club in front of you and place your right hand on the club. Make sure that the life line of your right hand sits comfortably over your left thumb. You should also notice that the v s formed by your thumb and forefinger are pointing at your right shoulder. Now that you know how to grip the club correctly, your posture will be extremely important for allowing your body to turn correctly and produce a lot of power. To set up with the proper posture follow these steps: 1. Stand straight up with your arms and club extended in front of you. 2. Look down between your arms and bend your knees until you can t see your shoelaces. 3. Drop your arms to your chest. The club should be a foot or so off the ground. 4. Keeping your back straight, bend from the hips until the club touches the ground. You have now set your body up in the proper position to allow it to turn correctly in the swing. Finally, it is important to set up your body aimed at the target. Not very often do I see our tour players practice without a club laying on the ground to aid in their alignment. Very rarely in fact do I see amateurs use this drill to aid them in their practice. First, understand that we will lay a club aimed directly at our target. Next place a club parallel to that club but more along your feet line. Set up in this position and double check that your hips and shoulders are parallel with the club on the ground. You can now remove the first club and be confident that your alignment will be aimed square to the target. Fundamentals are the most important areas of the golf swing and setup is crucial to being consistent. Do not forget about the word GAP and use it on the practice tee. Starting with the proper fundamentals will allow your swing to happen more naturally and will allow you to be ahead of your playing partners on the weekend.

Golf Poem In My Hand I Hold A Ball, White And Dimpled, Rather Small. Oh, How Bland It Does Appear, This Harmless Looking Little Sphere. By Its Size I Could Not Guess, The Awesome Strength It Does Possess. But Since I Fell Beneath Its Spell, I've Wandered Through The Fires Of Hell. My Life Has Not Been Quite The Same, Since I Chose To Play This Stupid Game. It Rules My Mind For Hours On End, A Fortune It Has Made Me Spend. It Has Made Me Yell, Curse And Cry, I Hate Myself And Want To Die. It Promises A Thing Called Par, If I Can Hit It Straight And Far.. To Master Such A Tiny Ball, Should Not Be Very Hard At All. But My Desires The Ball Refuses, And Does Exactly As It Chooses. It Hooks And Slices, Dribbles And Dies, And Even Disappears Before My Eyes.. Often It Will Have A Whim, To Hit A Tree Or Take A Swim. With Miles Of Grass On Which To Land, It Finds A Tiny Patch Of Sand. Then Has Me Offering Up My Soul, If Only It Would Find The Hole. It's Made Me Whimper Like A Pup, And Swear That I Will Give It Up. And Take To Drink To Ease My Sorrow, But The Ball Knows... I'll Be Back Tomorrow. ********************* Stand proud you noble swingers of clubs and losers of balls... A recent study found the average golfer walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found golfers drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year. That means, on average, golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon. Kind of makes you proud. Almost feel like a hybrid. ***********************
