1 CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Kansas City Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - August 2009 President s Note We had a busy July. Hillcrest Country Club was the location for our Wine and Dine. It provided a beautiful, if not challenging, course and a buffet for our dining in its stately clubhouse. Thank you, Larry Shockley for hosting this event. That same weekend we met Sunday at the Gaslight Grill for dinner & jazz. Everyone enjoyed themselves and asked for a repeat. Thanks, Marleen DeMatteo for arranging this event. On the 24 th we had our first social golf clinic. Tony Roberts hosted us at St. Andrews. First he spoke about some quick fixes to improve our game, we practiced what we had just learned, had a couple of drinks, some snacks and then partied on at Anita Mooney s house. This evening was a hit and will be a reoccurring event. Thanks to Veda Landon for organizing the clinic and Anita Mooney and Judy Higginbothom for the post party. Our July tournament was at Sycamore Ridge. The rain never happened and a good time was had by all. See the results list in this newsletter. Thank you Bob Soldi and Debbie Gauss for hosting. Our "dine" segment is in a private area at the Sawmill Restaurant. It's less than a mile from the course. Don't wait until the last minute to signup. Must give course a number soon. And please, please let me know if you plan to join us at the Sawmill drinks and a nosh after the round. 5 July Monthly Meeting at Birdies was attended by many of our number plus a few new faces. Several opportunities were offered to improve your game. See the listings for your next opportunity. Golf Clinic for KC Singles 35 KCSGA members and guests attended the nearly two hour social golf clinic at St. Andrews Fri evening, July 24th. Tony Roberts, PGA Professional, arranged our short commute to the private practice area near the 18th tee box. Tony's clinic began with some of the basics of the golf swing we should know, but don't always implement. Posture, grip, stance, full swing, chipping and putting... We then split up into groups for putting, short game, sand work and hitting full shots from the teeing area. Tony answered questions and offered additional instruction to many. Following the clinic, Anita Mooney, with an assist from sidekick, Judy Higginbotham, hosted a party at her home, only a few blocks from St. Andrews, where we enjoyed great appetizers. Thanks Anita and Judy! Several asked if we would have another clinic; we'll take a poll at the August 20th meeting to see if there is enough interest. 6 Gas Light Grill Gas Light Grill steak and music night for the golf singles was an overwhelming success. Over fifty golfers and friends converged on the Gas Light Grill in Overland Park for food, fun, music, and conversation plus a little dancing? The food was excellent and even the choices of accessories were nothing but quality. Big thank you to our social director, Marleen DiMatteo, for her efforts to put this event together. 7 CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION AUGUST 2009 The national office of the American Singles Golf Association (ASGA) has announced another great opportunity for singles to meet, greet, then battle it out on great golf courses. Venue: Myrtle Beach, USA. With somewhere between 80 and 100 golf courses in the area (depending on who you speak with), Myrtle Beach is simply the natural place to be when it comes to playing golf in the Fall. The weather is cool but not cold and the sandy soil is ideal for grass-growing conditions. All-in-all, mix the beautiful weather with the great golf and many friends from across the country, and you ve got the making for a great golf weekend. This year, the national office has signed an agreement with the Marriott Grande Dunes, located right on the beach in Myrtle Beach. It s a AAA Four-Diamond hotel and is ranked as one of the Top 500 resorts in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. We ve lined-up s o m e g r e a t courses nearby and have arranged for 10am shotgun starts each morning, so you ll have plenty of time to complete your round before the sun goes down. If you d like to register over the phone, call us at Scotland a Definite Since we did our survey last month, we ve spent a lot of time researching the kinds of things that will make our visit to Scotland a memorable one. We were all a little surprised to see the players at the Open Championship wearing long sleeves. This wasn t a fashion statement. It can get a little bit nippy in Scotland, even in the Summer. So if you play Scotland you ve got to understand Scotland. Expect the unexpected and the trip will be even more enjoyable! Please stay-tuned. We don t want to announce anything until it s on paper. Chicago Celebrates Tenth Anniversary Congratulations to our fine folks up in ChicagoLand for celebrating their tenth year as a chapter of the American Singles Golf Association! The leadership has done a great job over the years keeping the troops happy and we thank them for that. New Chapters / West Coast + East Coast It s been a busy spring and summer with the implementation of a new start-up section on the website. Persons interested in setting-up new ASGA chapters can find the process simplified by going to SinglesGolf.com/start.
