So often I notice fellow players anxiety levels rise meteorically as soon as a bunker rears its ugly head over the horizon, be they fairway or greenside bunkers. Let me just say that in some cases greenside bunkers can be your friend, and even fairway bunkers in rare circumstances. This is true mainly when there's a lot worse trouble around a fairway or green and that blessed bunker saves your ball from careening off to the no recovery zone, i.e. water, gulches, woods, cliffs with 1000 ft. drops, etc. That being said, we'd all rather be on the putting surface than in a bunker but sometimes we pull a Roy McAvoy, knowing we got that shot and go for it anyway. I will aim for a green but know that if it don't quite get there I have a bunker for a safety net. In the beach...okay, we're in a bunker and what I consistently see from fellow golfers is a squared clubface and a normal swing. If he or she is lucky they will pick September 4 Billy Scott and the Prophets*

4 the ball clean and get it up and out somewhere that's not in the bunker, but not always on the green either. Picking out of a bunker is a valid shot but not under normal circumstances. It's a specialty shot for really hard or wet sand where there is no chance of digging through the sand. Most of the time however the club will catch the edge in the sand, dig in and pretty much stop any forward progress of the club through the sand, said ball remaining in said hazard. If you look at your sandwedge you should notice that the sole of the club is (should be) larger than the sole on any of you other clubs. This is an intended design to give the clubhead more bounce, helping deflect the clubhead from the surface being struck. It is very handy for sand shots. The moment we've all be waiting for (shut up and get to the point will ya!) The way I've been taught to get out of bunkers is simply open the clubface so that the club "lies" flatter (being mindful of course that the club can't touch the sand any time other than when hitting the shot), this brings the sole into play. Play the ball forward in you stance, off the left foot, and open both your stance and clubface. The trick here is once you're in position, open face and open stance, you still have to check that the clubhead is pointed in the right direction. This takes and bit of practice. Take a normal backswing. On the downswing my swing thought is to swing down and through about an inch or two beneath the ball, taking sand, but never actually contacting the ball with the clubhead. My goal is to hit a wad of sand that just happens to take the ball with it. How far the ball with travel once dug out is a matter of tempo and practice but the key is not the hit the ball first, hit sand first and let the sole bounce through and take the whole package towards your target. This tip holds true for greenside bunkers. Fairway bunkers are a more normal swing. The best suggestion for fairway bunkers is unless the ball is sitting pretty and clean, don't go for the green. Take your lumps, get the ball out to a position that gives you the best possibility to hit the green that'll get it close enough to save par. Rules and More Rules Larry was participating in a singles match play. He was sharing the golf cart with his competitor and he was driving. They both hit their drives into the rough. In their search, the cart moved the ball of both players. In addition to the requirement to replace the ball in the original position before movement, what is the correct ruling? A. There is no penalty regardless of who was driving because the ball was moved during search. B. Both Larry and his opponent receive a one stroke for moving the ball. C.Larry was driving the cart, he losses the hole. D.Larry was driving the cart. He is awarded a one stroke penalty. The rider in the cart gets no penalty. And the answer is: D. Larry was driving the cart. He is awarded a one stroke penalty. The rider in the cart gets no penalty. The cart is considered the equipment of the driver of the cart, if the cart is being driven. In this case, Larry was driving the cart, it was his equipment that moved both his ball and his opponent's. Rule 18 pertains to Ball at rest moved. If a golfer, his caddie, or his equipment moves his ball at rest except as permitted under certain conditions (i.e. on the green) a penalty of one stroke is awarded and the ball must be replaced to its position before movement. This is the rule that applies to Larry If an opponent, or opponent s caddie or opponent s equipment moves your ball while he is searching for it, and your ball is moved during the search, neither you nor your opponent is penalized for the movement of your ball, but the ball must be replaced to its position before movement. This is why Larry s opponent was not penalized and why Larry was not penalized for moving his opponent's ball. Note: Had Larry moved his opponent s ball other than during a search for the ball, Larry would have been awarded a one stroke penalty for moving an opponent s ball. In this case, the opponent s ball was moved during a search for the ball and no penalty is awarded. Next time, don t be so quick to drive the golf cart. 7 CELEBRATING 15YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION AUGUST 2008 We ve been around as an organization for about sixteen years now. Many people have come and gone. Over 25,000 have joined in one of our 70 chapters nationwide over the years. Many members are now hitting their 10th year of membership, and even some beyond that. Single-hood doesn t seem to be that bad of a deal and fits many of our members to the tee. And during these years, we ve been able to draw some conclusions. First, getting new members is a good thing. Second, losing members is a good thing. Yes, when members hook-up with other members, we judge ourselves as being successful, because the organization made a relationship happen, even though it s congratulations and farewell time for them. Our success in this regards provides additional validation, especially to newcomers. It says that we offer a great option to improve one s life: meet members of the opposite sex, enjoy more friends of both sexes, and play more golf. Okay, we re validated. Now what? To keep this organization, and especially your local chapter on the right (and fast) track, it s important to constantly promote getting new members. New members today are your Board members next year and year s beyond. New members could be the reason you go to your next meeting. Will he or she be there? New members bring in their circle of friends. If you attend a meeting and no mention of bringing-in new members is made, then it s time for a talk with your Membership Committee, or your chapter president! Every chapter should have an on-going program for members to bring in guests to meetings, socials and golf outings. One chapter offers a free beer or wine to members if they bring a guest to a meeting (the drink is paid out of the chapter treasury). Another offers the guest three mulligans at their first golf outing. But whatever the incentive, if your chapter is not growing, it is, as they say, dying. ASGA National provides a number of things to help your chapter get guests to join your chapter: Display stands (see website for details / SinglesGolf.com) Press releases (we can help you write one of you can go to our website for some sample press releases) PSA s for local radio stations and signage for driving ranges Local members can post chapter information on a regular basis on Craigslist and there are many other websites where simple posts will bring new members to your meeting. So make something happen. Your efforts will make a difference. Upcoming Multi-Chapter Events Details and registration forms of all events are at Sea Palms Weekend / St. Simon's Island - August 15-17, Hosted by the Jacksonville chapter. Details can be found at or contact Hank Parish (hyparish@msn.com) for more information. Fall Fling at Mission Inn (Florida) - October 24-26, Hosted by the Tampa Bay chapter. New Year s Event (Florida likely) December 29-January 1, Hosted by ASGA National Office. Details TBA in August. Bear Info: You Need to Read This! We ve been thinking about starting a chapter in Wyoming. While exploring the possibilities, we read a brochure from the Wyoming State Department of Fish and Wildlife advising golfers to take extra precautions and be on the alert for bears while playing on Big Horn, Grand Teton, and Shoshone National Forests Golf Courses. They advise golfers to wear noise-producing devices such as little bells on their clothing to alert, but not to startle the bears unexpectedly. They also advise you to carry pepper spray in the case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch for signs of bear activity. Golfers should be able to recognize the difference between Black Bear and Grizzly Bear droppings on the golf course. Black Bear droppings are smaller and contain berries and possibly squirrel fur. Grizzly Bear droppings have bells, golf-gloves and sunglasses in them, and smell like pepper spray. Just thought we d point this out in case we ever have a multichapter event there! - Tom Alsop President / Founder American Singles Golf Association
