1 CELEBRATING 14 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Philadelphia Chapter - American Singles Golf Association July 2007 McCall Outing on May 5 th A beautiful spring evening greeted 22 golfers who converged on the McCall Golf & Country Club in Upper Darby on Saturday, May 5, at 3 pm. Site of the renowned PECO course, McCall s history dates back to 1912 when the land was purchased to accommodate baseball competitions among the companies that would become PECO. Competition included closest to the pin on #9 for men, won by Ron Schillow. Dameron Stoddard, a new member, took ladies honors on #6. Lou Lekosky rounded out the field of winners with fewest putts, 17. That prize came down to a match of cards among Lou, Bruce McKenzie and Alice Hearn, but Lou s one putt on the #1 handicap hole proved the winner. We lost a few players to Kentucky Derby parties afterward, but the remaining golfers enjoyed drinks and dinner at Applebee s on City Line. Thanks to Elaine Zappacosta for coordinating this great, early season outing. Spring Hollow Twenty four ASGA faithful showed up to celebrate the day at Spring Hollow in Spring City on Saturday, June 2nd. A glorious day of golf was followed by libations at the Sly Fox in Royersford. The group played a shamble. No prizes were given but everybody won a good time. ~Marianne Carbine, Golf Coordinator for Spring Hollow A Great Outing at Center Square followed by a Culinary Delight at Peggy Ramsey s Twenty-seven of us tee d off on a beautiful day at Center Square the morning of 6/9/07. The women s closest to the pin was won by Susan Clark of the South Jersey Chapter on hole #3 and the men s closest to the pin was single handedly taken by Stanley Vickers. He was the last man to tee of the 18 th and extra pressure was added by having the gallery sitting on the hill of the 18 th (It was great to hear everyone cheering for Stanley in celebration of his victory). Also note, everyone in Stanley s foursome, made it over the water on the 18 th (Stanley was joined by: Joanne Chilton, Jean Farnsworth, and Laura Crump). After golf, everyone retired to Peggy Ramsey s home for an evening of great food, great drinks, great company and a tough of laughs. The door prize winner s were Peggy McCarty, Ron Altobelli, Susan Clark and Debbie Kindt. Shirley Marengo had kindly donated the door prizes. Also, in honor of the 3 rd jewel of the Triple Crown, we had a Belmont Stakes pool where Rags to Riches was the winner. Sharing in Rags to Riches victory were Jim LaRosa, Joanne Chilton, Joe Cirvola, and Debbie Kindt. A BIG THANKS goes out to Peggy Ramsey for opening her home and awing us with her culinary talents. ~Laura Crump - Golf Coordinator for Center Square Outing Westover Outing After bad weather forced the cancellation of our annual Westover outing that traditionally coincides with the Masters in April, sunny skies and warm breezes greeted 27 golfers at Westover on June 16th. 2 Philadelphia Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association President Patricia Kosek Chairman of the Board Shirley Marengo Golf Chairperson Howard Schwarz Membership Chairperson Laura Crump Co-Membership Chairperson Pat Hawes Communications Chairperson Debbie Kindt Treasurer Joe Ciravola played our standard shamble, counted putts and shot at the flag on 17. Closest to the pin honors went to "Gum" Conte (the only man who stayed on the green) and Mary Jo DeFino who bested Pat Hawes (the only women who could record). Where were the rest of us? Fewest putts prizes went to Kathy Konieczny with 33 and Rick Guenther with 35. Drinks and dinner followed at Michael's as we watched Saturday's play at the U.S. Open. ~Pat Kosek, Golf Coordinator for Westover Outing Old Homestead Twenty four golfers from our Philadelphia chapter had a great time at the Olde Homestead GC outing on Saturday, June 23. The weather was perfect, the course was in good condition and as challenging as ever. Those who went last year remember it rained enroute to the course and when returning, but this year it was sunny, breezy and low humidity. The contests were fun with Pat Kosek Don Munson, and Marcia Reuben winning closest to the pin. Longest drive went to Fred Morlok and Shirley Marengo and least number of putts to Deb Kindt and Joe Ciravola. If you have time next year, stroll through the barn and see the incredible collection of antique farm implements and wagon. Ask anyone who was there and they'll tell you what a great place this is to play our beloved game of golf. ~Al Griffith, Golf Coordinator for wonderful Old Homestead outing TPC Jasna Polana Teresa Comyns and Bob Conte played in the following tournament with the PGA Tour Partners Club. Teresa won the prize for LOW GROSS among all the participants and was the only female. Good going! Dear Therese, Thank you for joining us today at the TPC Jasna Polana for the eighth TPC Tournament Trail event of the year. It was a great day to play such a magnificent course. Rules and more rules... In 1982, GOLF MAGAZINE published, with the United States Golf Association, a list of golf's "10 Golden Rules." The aim was to simplify the complex rules book for golfers. The 10 rules remain just as golden today. They are repeated below. 1. Play the ball as it lies. 2. Don't move, bend, or break anything growing or fixed, except in fairly taking your stance or swing. Don't press anything down. 3. You may lift natural objects not fixed or growing, except in a water hazard or bunker. No penalty. 4. You may move man-made objects even in a bunker or water hazard. If they are immovable, you may drop within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, no nearer the hole. In a hazard, you must drop in the hazard. No penalty. 5. You may drop away from casual water, ground under repair, burrowing animal holes or casts. On the putting green, place, or in a hazard drop, at the nearest point of relief, no nearer the hole; otherwise drop within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, no nearer the hole. No penalty. (Okay, so they're not all simple.) 6. In a water hazard or bunker, don't touch the water or ground with your hand or club before the stroke. 7. If you hit your ball into a water hazard and cannot play it, either drop behind the hazard or at the place where you played the shot. One penalty stroke. If you hit into a lateral hazard, you may also drop within two club-lengths of the point where the ball last crossed the hazard margin, or a point equidistant from the hole on the opposite margin. One penalty stroke. 8. When you hit your ball out of bounds or lose it, add a penalty stroke, go back and drop a ball at the place where you played the shot. On the tee, you may tee the ball. If you think you have hit your ball out of bounds or lost it outside a water hazard, play a provisional ball before searching for the first one. 9. When you have an unplayable lie, you may drop a ball at the place where you played the previous shot, adding a penalty stroke. On the tee, you may tee the ball. Alternatively, drop within two club-lengths, no nearer the hole, or any distance behind the unplayable spot, keeping it between you and the hole. If the ball is in a bunker, you must drop in the bunker, under either of the alternative options. 10. On the putting green, you may repair ball marks and old hole plugs on the line of the putt, but not spike marks.
