1 CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Philadelphia Chapter - American Singles Golf Association June 2011 FROM THE PREZ Nothing can stop us, not even a little rain! We are through May and we had to reschedule 3 outings. A little rain didn t stop us a Rock Manor or Bucks. Thanks to the coordinators and golfers for being flexible. It goes to show that we do live by the ASGA motto fun, fellowship and fairways. As I write this in advance of Memorial Day weekend a few things come to mind Thank you MARIANNE CARBINE for putting together a great weekend, thank you to everyone who went to Shawnee and man do we know how to have a good time! Take a look at the golf calendar, there are only 1 or 2 open s and there are many open s. I m betting that one of the s will be another Halloween happening. If you have not been out lately (and you know who you are), you don t know what you are missing. I do guarantee a good time to be had. This is one of the best groups I have been associated with and I look forward to seeing everyone weekly. What a great way to spend a day golf and good friends. Friday night in Phoenixville is a great way to practice your swing at Mead- owbrook and then enjoy food and drinks at Joe s. Don t be afraid to come out and have fun. As always we are very low key, just ask DORIE GOOD and JO ANN MAGUIRE. Once you come out its hard not to want to come back, especially when there is Mac and Cheese on the menu. Both came out and had a great time. I wanted to mention Dorie and Jo Ann because they had not been out in a while, but now they are hooked on having fun. Hope to see you on the links real soon! MAINLAND, APRIL 30 th Sunny skies bathed the fairways of the Mainland Golf Course, as 47 golfers drove, pitched, and putted their way toward another fun time on the links. After golf, we all gathered for dinner and cocktails in the Brookshire Room at the Whiskey River Grille. Congrats to Closest to Pin winners TOM AMO at 12 4 and SALLY THOMPSON BELL at Honorable mention goes to DAVE ADAMS at 18' 2". Special thanks to Mainland Golf Course for donating the Closest to Pin prizes. JACK GIAMPEITRO boldly predicted prior to start of the round that this was going to be his BREAKOUT weekend for golf score. Jack, was it your breakout weekend??? LIZ MOHAM- MED S dedication to golf despite severely cutting her hand on way to course but being a real trooper did play. RON SCHIL- LOW banged in a 30 foot birdie putt on the 17 th hole. But the stars crossed and even before they got to the course, players who didn t read an from Dave Adams warning about possible road delays, fell victim to a PaDot construction project on Route 202 that created a huge traffic jam around West Chester. One member never made it and others were frazzled by the time they got to the course. But they found their carts, headed to the first tee (actually the 10 th ), and then the weather entered into the picture. What was supposed to be a passing shower, turned into a down pour and eleven folks decided to call it quits and collected rain checks from the club. Twenty-four players carried on and all but 2 finished 18 holes. TERRI MCMULLEN definitely was playing her A game as she took longest drive for women on #15 and closest to the pin on #5. The unflappable DAN GREENE took longest drive for men on #15 and DENNIS O CONNOR planted the ball to win closest to the pin on #16. The staff at the Club was very helpful and the restaurant was very accommodating. The guy s had some well meaning attempts, but need to get in touch with their inner fashion self a little more for next year, myself included. DON MUNSON, already our Louisville slugger on the golf course, ran away with best hat for men during the post-golf, pre-race festivities, by showing a little plumage on the side of his debonair chapeau. KAREN BACHMAN, soared to great heights with her multi-tiered, accessorized, golf hats, visors and assorted other links paraphernalia tribute to our theme, for a sure shot victory in the women s division. Oh, and yes, this was primarily a golf event and with RENE at the reins you know it was hitch free, from the vases of roses on the registration table, (suggested by MARY LONG, who also assisted with the table decorations) to planning the southern style barbeque sandwiches and mint juleps (more about them later) and arranging for a much needed shotgun start, kindly administered by course ownership. Even Mother Nature s rude attempt at throwing a few showers our way couldn t turn us into mudders. Also, let s not forget the excellent service provided by the grounds, clubhouse and grill-room staff. Now, in golf, there are handicaps and in horseracing there are handicappers, and both are a little hard to believe sometimes, but from right out of the gate no one handicapped themselves from having fun as evidenced by the entire group enthusiastically singing My Olde Kentucky Home ( O.K. you naaae-sayers, so we weren t in tune) just before the start of the race, led by our own Mucho Macho Man (one of the horses in the race) himself, DAVE WALSH, who pony-ed most of us right up to the bar-rail to better see and cheer for our horses, thus dubbing us the track railbirds. Do you think the mint juleps hadn t kicked in yet. And speaking of the race; the prizes were awarded as follows: Win- Split between JACK GIAMPETRO and RICH MENCHACA; Place- KAREN BACH- MAN; Show- Split between SHELL GLOWACKI and DAVE WALSH. On one sad, though meaningful note, for those of us who have followed professional golf for a while, TOM SHEEHAN, asked for a moment of silence in remembrance of Spanish golfing legend Severiano Ballesteros, who had passed the night before. They say, Seve, could make birdie from the parking lot and not necessarily the one for the course he was playing. Lastly, but not least, hats off to RENE for a job well done and a round of gratitude to all the good-spirited, fun loving people attending who made the day a true Triple Crown event.
