1 CELEBRATING 27 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Sarasota Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - December 2018 President s Message Greetings Golfers! This is my first article as your new president. I am looking forward to serving as your president and have great faith in all of my fellow Board Members that we will provide some memorable moments and the opportunity to play some nice courses in 2019! Hopefully, the cold weather is behind us now. On behalf of the Board, we hope that everybody had a very Merry Christmas and wishing a Happy New Year to All! We held our annual Christmas Party at the Meadows CC on December 9th. Many thanks to Phyllis Frederic for all of her fine efforts! Unfortunately, the Golfing Gods did not cooperate concerning the weather. That did not deter anybody from attending the Happy Hour, enjoying the wonderful buffet dinner and dancing to the great music provided by Sammy J and the Sax Man. Once the music started, dancing was non-stop and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. Golf Tip - If you don't hit it straight, you are going to pay the price! ~Andy Knisley Thirsty Thursday Recap The January Thirsty Thursday social will be held at Jill Johnston s abode on January 17 th beginning at 6 PM. Be sure to bring your smile! ~Linda Davis Host Phyllis & Friends Past Golf Events Annual Anniversary/Holiday Celebration event - On Sunday, December 9 th, forty three Sarasota Singles Golf Association members were treated to a holiday dinner and dancing at The Meadows Country Club. Guests feasted on chicken marsala and grilled salmon and danced to the music of Sammy J & the Sax Man. 2 Sarasota Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association Members toasted the holidays and the coming new year with champagne. Maria Herrera Brown was the lucky 50/50 raffle winner. Unfortunately, the planned golf outing on The Highlands course was cancelled due to heavy rain. 3 River Club We held our last 2018 golf outing and dinner on Saturday, December 29 th at The River Club. We managed to gather together a group of 26 golfers despite the fact that many members were out of town for the holidays. We had a few guests join us as well as a couple of Sarasota Chapter new members. We began golfing at 11:00 AM on what felt like a "summer" day in Florida! The game for the day was a scramble which was won by the team of Alice Elgrim, Fred Weinberg, Phyllis Frederic and Mike Littlejohn. We also held our contests. The Closest To The Pin contests were won by Andy Knisley and Linda Davis. We also had a Closest To The Line contest which was won by Maimon Levy for the men and Lynne Kramer for the women. Lynne attributed her success to her brand new driver! John Girlus was the lucky winner of the 50/50 raffle! After golf, we enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner which was arranged for us in The River Club dining room. Everyone really enjoyed the course and had a fun day of golf and, as always, enjoyed time with friends!. Thanks to everyone for coming out to play! 4 Upcoming Events Capri Isle - Play 18 holes at the Capri Isles Golf Club in Venice on Saturday, January 12th. First tee time is at 11:45 AM. Serenoa - Play 18 holes at the Serenoa Golf Club in Sarasota on Sunday, January 27th. First tee time is at 11:00 AM. Lynne is hosting both of these events because no one would volunteer to be a host. Please volunteer to serve as the host for one or both of these events. Contact Lynne if you can host or at least help with the event. New Rules! The USGA has made a number of rules changes effective in 2019 that should improve pace of play and perhaps improve your score. Here are a few changes that are of interest to us. 1. The flag stick can be left in the hole while putting. 2. Any mark on a green can be repaired. 3. An embedded (plugged) ball can be lifted and dropped within 1 club length, no closer to the hole, at any location other than in a bunker. 4. You can remove loose impediments, ground your club and take practice swings in a red marked penalty (aka hazard) area. 5. You can remove loose impediments in a bunker. 6. You can take relief outside of a bunker, along a line from the hole to your ball, but incur a 2 stroke penalty (which might be worth the effort!). 7. No penalty for accidently moving your ball during search, during ball marking or on the green. 8. No penalty for hitting the ball more than once on a single stroke. 9. Ball is dropped from knee height instead of shoulder height. 10. Allowed search time is reduced to 3 minutes. There are several more rule changes that may be of interest.
