1 CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Fairfield County Chapter - American Singles Golf Association June 2017 Chapter News Happy Spring Golfers! Good news/bad news. Good news is that after all the rain we ve had, the golf courses will be green, lush and beautiful. Bad news is we are wondering if it will ever stop raining so we can get out there and play! However, we did manage to play some golf in May. We ended up with nice weather for our Sterling Farms 18 hole outing. We had 3 groups and had a great time on the course. After we had a nice crowd at dinner at Zody s at Sterling Farms. Nice to catch up and compare scores. A reminder for all of us who play 18 with our group; we do play double par. What this means is that for us to be able to keep coming back here we need to pick up the pace. Once you've reached double par; pick up your ball and move on. The bigger the groups the more important it is to be aware of this rule. We started our first monthly 9 hole at the Orchards. This is always a very welcoming place to play. They are so nice to us here. We had a good group as we combined with Meetup. We met some old Meetup friends and met a new one also. After golf we went to Stonebridge for dinner. The food and fellowship was wonderful. A tip for next time; it's easier to park at the Milford Train Station or at the Bank next to train station. Our first Friday Happy Hour is being rescheduled for June 9 at Oak Hills restaurant in Norwalk. Happy hour starts at 6:00 and dinner at 7. If weather is nice we will try to reserve a table on the porch. We are happy that the restaurant is open so please support them. June 11 is our next 18 hole event. This is at Whitney Farms and first tee time is at noon. Check the website and your for when you can sign up for this. Whitney is one of the courses that always fills up fast. We will eat/drink at the course after golf. June 18 is the next scheduled 9 hole at Orchards in Milford. In addition keep an eye on the website for additional 9 hole events to be scheduled on June. River Cruise - Paris, France, September, This will be a river cruise up the Seine River. We'd like to spend days in France. Dates for the 2018 Ryder Cup are September 28-30, 2018 but this river cruise itinerary will not be timed perfectly to coincide with the Ryder Cup, unless you want to spend some extra days in Paris on your own. There are a lot of proposed rule changes, and you can read about all of them over at the USGA website. The plan is to take feedback from golfers now, finalize the changes in 2018, and introduce them officially to the rules of golf on Jan. 1, Here are the 10 rule changes that jumped out the most for making sense: 1. Player accidentally moves ball - If a player accidentally moves a ball when searching for it, or accidentally moves his/ her ball marker or ball on the putting green, the new rule will be that there is no penalty. Current rule: 1-stroke penalty. 2. Accidental deflection - If a player s ball in motion accidentally hits the player, his or her caddie, the person attending the flagstick or the attended or removed flagstick, the new rule will be that there is no penalty. Current rule: 1-stroke penalty (or 2-stroke penalty when the accidental deflection relates to the flagstick) 3. Time to search for lost ball - The new rule will be that you are allowed to search for a lost ball for three minutes. Current rule: You may search for five minutes. 4. Taking relief for a ball embedded in pitch mark - A player may take relief without penalty for an embedded ball anywhere (except in sand) in the general area (new term for through the green ), unless a Local Rule has been adopted restricting relief only to areas cut to fairway height or less. Current rule: Relief is allowed only in areas cut to fairway height or less, unless a Local Rule has been adopted allowing relief anywhere (except in sand) through the green. 5. Repairing damage on putting green - New rule: A player may repair almost any damage (including spike marks and animal damage but not including natural imperfections) on the putting green. Current rule: A player may only repair ball-marks or old hole plugs on the putting green. 6. Touching sand in the bunker with club or hand - New rule: No penalty except when a player touches sand (1) with his or her hand or club to test the conditions of the bunker or (2) with the club in the area right behind or in front of the ball, in making a practice swing or in making the backswing for the stroke. Current rule: Any touching of sand with hand or club results in loss of hole/2-stroke penalty (with exceptions). 7. Playing with damaged club - New rule: A player may keep using any damaged club, even if the player damaged it in anger. Current rule: A player may use the damaged club only if it was damaged in the normal course of play. 8. Advice and help - New rule: A caddie is not allowed to stand on a line behind a player while the player is taking his or her stance and until stroke is made. Current rule: A caddie is allowed to stand on a line behind a player while the player is taking a stance and preparing to play, but must not stand there while the player makes the stroke. 9. Pace of play - New rule: Recommends that players make each stroke in no more than 40 seconds, and usually in less time. Current rule: No recommendations are given. 10. Trusting players' judgment - New rule: When estimating or measuring a spot, point, line, area or distance under a Rule, a player s reasonable judgment will not be second-guessed based on later evidence (such as video review) if the player did all that could be reasonably expected under the circumstances to make an accurate estimation or measurement. Current rule: A player s judgment is given no particular weight or deference; the Committee decides any issue about the accuracy of the estimation or measurement based on a review of all facts.

The Albany chapter of the American Singles Golf Association has put considerable work into offering ASGA members nationwide an opportunity to play and stay at a premier location in the country s northeast. There s this place that allows you to forget about those other things in life, while you absorb nature at its finest. It s called Otesaga Resort. Look at your calendar. Erase anything you have going on for the weekend of September It s going to be that good. Play Leatherstocking Golf Club, a legendary course with a beautiful layout. So stop what you're doing and head to that world wide internet place and begin drooling: Albany, ASGA has reserved 30 rooms, most likely enough for 50 people, as many room together, but don t hesitate. With peak fall season in northern New York, I wouldn t be surprised if within 2-3 weeks the rooms fill up. Canada Courtyard Marriott Fills-Up July 16/17 Fairmont Tremblant: more rooms for the July portion of event We re up to 73 players. Good news, however, the Courtyard Marriott in Montreal says we ve surpassed our allotment. The original play was for two days in Montreal then three days in Tremblant. No problem if you want to head straight to Tremblant for the 3-day event, but if you want to fly into Montreal and stay a couple of days there before heading to Tremblant, we ll try to accommodate you. Sign-up with a friend if you want to save money and share a room. The 2018 Seine River Cruise Paris, France September 9 18, 2018 We ve selected Tauck as our river cruise company of choice. Tauck, a 92-year-old company that started providing tours to parts of America and Canada many people had never seen, has helped ASGA plan this trip with a promise our members will thoroughly enjoy from private tours of small and historic French towns along the Seine River to the beauty of the MS Swiss Sapphire ship itself, the professionalism of the Tauck staff, to the highly acclaimed food that will be prepared for us each evening. Having taken this itinerary as a site visit in October of last year, I can personally attest to the great first class value. ASGA has special pricing. We never pay what the public pays for our multi-chapter events, whether on the mainland or overseas. (We re not allowed to actually tell you price difference, but if you go to the website and click on the COST tab, see for yourself!) Our itinerary is to visit the historic monuments in Rouen, the English Channel villages of Etretat and Honfleur, Jumieges Abbey, one of the great Benedictines of France, Chateau Gaillard, Claude Monet s home and a lot more. At our halfway point on the cruise, we ll visit the D-Day beaches of Normandy. Head to or review the video at Tauck even offers quarterly payments to make it easier on you. So be thinking about whom you d like to room with to save on your overall costs. Airfare to Paris is not included and we urge you to purchase trip insurance since the trip is 15 months away! Golf Rules Yes, golf rules much of our lives but did you know there s a series of proposed golf rule changes? In an attempt to make the game a bit friendlier and to hasten play, the USGA and the R&A have tossed out some suggestions for some (much needed) rule changes. Well, much needed if you re on the PGA tour. Seven proposals have to do with taking relief. Totally not what you re thinking... although I have taken relief many times on the course. It s part of the rules, folks. So your ball is in the bunker and Mr. Butterfly lands on your ball. He s impressed with those cute divots. So impressed that he stays there seemingly forever. Under current rules, he s consider a loose impediment and you cannot do anything to shoo him or any other loose impediment away. With the proposed rule changes, all impediments can be moved. So this sets the stage for some interesting reading, like the new rules telling you how to drop a ball. I ve been doing that all my life or so I ve been told. I am aware that participation in and/or observance of the golf activities and/or other activities sponsored by Releasees is or may be an inherently dangerous activity and may have health-related risks, and agree that I am voluntarily participating in and/or observing such activities with full knowledge of all dangers and risks involved. In addition, I hereby expressly assume all risks of injury, death, property loss, property damage, and other loss and damage which my occur relative to the participation in and/or observance of such activities. I understand and agree that this Release includes any and all claims based on the past, present and future ordinary negligence, action, and/or inaction of Releasees and/or Releasee s directors, officers, employees, agents, and affiliates. I acknowledge that I have read this Release, have been fully and completely advised of the potential dangers incidental and inherent to the participation in and/or observance of the activities organized and/or sponsored by Releasees, and am fully aware of the legal consequences of signing the Application Form acknowledging this Release. I agree that this Release, waiver and indemnity agreement is intended to be as broad and inclusive as permitted by the laws of the State of my residency, and that if any portion of this Release is held invalid, it is agreed that the balance shall, notwithstanding continue in full force and effect. TERMS AND CONDITIONS: Membership in the American Singles Golf Association (ASGA) becomes effective upon receipt of dues and is valid for the period of time requested as indicated on the application form, subject to these TERMS AND CONDITIONS. I am 21 years or older, single (i.e. never married OR divorced OR legally separated OR widowed), and have read and accept, as a condition of joining, the RELEASE FROM LIABILITY AND EXPRESS ASSUMPTION OF RISK shown above.
