Complete Accessibility Capital Campaign Eliminating barriers for participation in the life-changing Return to Golf program
Our Need The purpose of this campaign is to create COMPLETE ACCESSIBILITY at our Wharton Golf Center at North Olmsted Golf Club campus, opening the Return To Golf program to any and all individuals with physical disabilities by eliminating barriers for participation. MESSAGE FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR Dear Friends, This is an exciting time for our Return To Golf program. Demand for our innovative programming is at a record high. New participants are arriving every week, each with their own unique set of challenges. Our Wharton Golf Center at North Olmsted Golf Club must be able to fully accommodate each new Return To Golf participant s physical disabilities and specific needs through COMPLETE ACCESSIBILITY. We pride ourselves on challenging our participants both on the golf course and in the fitness center to improve their overall quality of life. Limited access at our facilities is one barrier we would like to eliminate for these folks. Improving the COMPLETE ACCESSIBILITY of our Wharton Golf Center at the North Olmsted Golf Club campus is vital to the future success and growth of our Return To Golf program. Our goal is that all individuals enjoy the game of golf without limitations. Please join us as we remove the barriers at our program facilities, allowing new groups of participants to restore independence through the game of golf. Sincerely, Trevor Hazen PGA MESSAGE FROM THE CAMPAIGN CO-CHAIRS Paul Schlather Our Fellow Golfers, We are extremely proud to be part of the Return To Golf program, and it is our privilege to write to you about the COMPLETE ACCESSIBILITY campaign. Witnessing the accelerated growth of the Return To Golf program over the last 18 months has given us a glimpse into the true impact our lifechanging programming has on its participants. It is our task to raise funds for the COMPLETE ACCESSIBILITY campaign to eliminate barriers for participation; allowing anyone with a physically disability to benefit from our unique programming. As a member of the local David A.J. Axson golf community, we ask you to look back on the benefits you have received from the game of golf and consider giving back by providing COMPLETE ACCESSIBILITY to the current and future participants of the Return To Golf program. Please join us in making a three-year commitment to the growth of our program by providing COMPLETE ACCESSIBILITY at our Wharton Golf Center at North Olmsted Golf Club campus facilities. We thank you in advance for your generosity. Best Regards, Paul Schlather David A.J. 3 Our Mission The Return To Golf program helps physically disabled adults and children restore independence and improve their overall enjoyment of life through the innovative combination of rehabilitation-based golf fitness, recreational therapy and the game of golf. ABOUT THE RETURN TO GOLF PROGRAM Return To Golf programming is provided free of charge to more than 200 participants, either as part of individual or group program sessions. Our participants represent a broad range of physical disabilities, including stroke survivors, amputees, traumatic brain injuries, visual impairment, multiple sclerosis, arthritis and cerebral palsy. The Return To Golf program s creative combination of rehabilitation-based golf fitness and the game of golf helps its participants improve balance, coordination, muscle strength and most importantly, self-esteem under the supervision of our talented team of PGA golf professionals and fitness-oriented physical therapists. Programming is conducted year round (45 weeks per year) at the Wharton Golf Center on the North Olmsted Golf Club campus, which includes a fitness center and indoor golf practice facility. WHARTON GOLF CENTER AT NORTH OLMSTED GOLF CLUB Home to the Return To Golf program, our 10 acre campus allows for year round programming at one location. The 4,500 sq. ft Wharton Golf Center, located behind the ninth green of the North Olmsted Golf Club, houses our state-of-the-art fitness center and indoor golf range. The fitness center is utilized year round and is complete with rehabilitation-based fitness equipment, including a NuStep recumbent cross-trainer, SportsArt rehabilitation treadmill, TRUEStretch flexibility platform and Cardon pulley systems. non-programming times. SoloRider golf carts are available for individuals with limited mobility. These specialized vehicles give participants the ability to safely swing the golf club from a seated position, in addition to being able to drive onto greens and tees. The Clubhouse serves as the central gathering place for the Return To Golf program during the golf season. The full-service facility includes a pro shop, snack bar, eating area and a large outdoor patio overlooking the first hole. The indoor golf range, located adjacent to the fitness center, allows the Return To Golf program to conduct year round golf programming as well as during periods of inclement weather during the golf season. The range is equipped with SKLZ adaptive golf training aids, K-Trainer 3D Biofeedback System, Vector X launch monitor, NitroSwing trainer and an OptiShot Infrared Golf Simulator. The North Olmsted Golf Club s 9-hole, executive layout course is the perfect facility for the Return To Golf program and its participants. Owned and maintained specifically for the program, the first hole serves as the driving range for weekly programming and participants are encouraged to tee it up free of charge. The golf course is open to the public during
RETURN TO GOLF PROGRAM COMPLETE ACCESSIBILITY PLAN WHARTON GOLF CENTER The Wharton Golf Center, located behind the ninth green of the North Olmsted Golf Club, houses our state-of-the-art fitness center and indoor golf range. Installation of Automatic Door at Main (West) Entrance - $8,800 The west entrance is the primary access point for 90% of our Return To Golf program participants. Installation of an ADA automated/motorized door will allow safe and effortless accessibility for all program participants, regardless of their physical disability or mobility needs (wheelchair, walker, cane, etc). This door enters into the foyer, where the elevator is located. Non-Slip Flooring (Fitness Center, Main Hallway & Library) - $22,000 Carpet will be removed from the fitness center, main hallway and library. The new surface will be replaced with ADA specific non-slip flooring. The non-slip surface will provide a smoother, less roll-resistant environment for all participants, particularly those individuals requiring the use of a wheelchair or the assistance of a walker or cane. Installation of Automatic Door at Rear (South) Entrance - $7,200 The south entrance is the access point for Return To Golf program participants with limited mobility. Installation of an ADA automated/motorized door will allow easier accessibility for these program participants, regardless of their physical disability or mobility needs (wheelchair, walker, cane, etc). This door enters into the main hallway. Installation of Automatic Door at Front (North) Entrance - $12,200 The north entrance is the alternate access point for all Return To Golf program participants with limited mobility. Installation of an ADA automated/motorized door will allow stress free accessibility for these program participants, no matter their mobility needs (wheelchair, walker, cane, etc). This door enters into the library, where participants gather before their scheduled program sessions. Parking Lot/Driveway Addition for Participant Drop-Off and Pick-Up - $32,000 The addition of a drop-off and pick-up area at the west side of the facility would allow greater accessibility to the main entrance for individuals with limited mobility, in addition to improving bus access during group programming. Note: Insurance, permits and drawings are included in the cost of each project.
NORTH OLMSTED GOLF CLUB - CLUBHOUSE Our clubhouse serves as the central gathering place for Return To Golf program participants during the golf season. This full-service facility includes a pro shop, snack bar, eating area and a large outdoor patio overlooking the first hole. Installation of ADA Ramp Access and Automatic Door at Pro Shop (North) Entrance - $12,500 The pro shop entrance to the clubhouse provides access for Return To Golf program participants by allowing direct accessibility to the restrooms, pro shop, snack bar and eating area. The ADA ramp and motorized door will provide immediate access to the clubhouse for participants requiring the use of a wheelchair or the assistance of a walker or cane. Installation of ADA Ramp Access and Automatic Door at Patio (West) Entrance - $11,000 The patio entrance to the clubhouse is the secondary access point for Return To Golf program participants, allowing direct accessibility to the restrooms, pro shop, snack bar and eating area. The ADA ramp and motorized door will provide immediate access to the clubhouse for participants requiring the use of a wheelchair or the assistance of a walker or cane. Remodel & Expansion - $138,000 This project would significantly improve the overall accessibility and layout of the clubhouse. The design also includes an addition to the west side of the building, expanding the space for larger gatherings, improving traffic flow and creating additional storage in the basement for program equipment. NORTH OLMSTED GOLF CLUB - GOLF COURSE Our 9-hole, executive golf course measures 1,702 yards (including four par fours and six par threes), making it the perfect facility for our Return To Golf participants, including individual and group programming sessions. Golf Course Safety - $4,000 Safety posts will be installed near key obstacles on the golf course, including creeks, ponds and bridges. These posts will keep golf carts and Solo-Rider golf cars from entering or making contact with these obstacles. Level Teeing Grounds - $14,000 Six teeing grounds will be leveled to increase accessibility for program participants, in addition to providing a safer and more playable surface. Cart Paths - $110,000 Continuous asphalt cart paths would replace the current gravel paths situated at various locations throughout the golf course, providing greater accessibility and smoother walking surfaces for participants. Cart paths would also increase the number of playing days throughout the golf season. Golf Course Drainage - $29,000 Drainage projects on holes two and six would improve the playability of these areas after a period of rain, in addition to providing accessibility to the areas of play.
MESSAGES FROM THE RETURN TO GOLF PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS Every week I feel pumped to participate! Everyone is warm and welcoming, greeting every participant by name and with a genuinely friendly smile. It s a great feeling! There is a great deal of camaraderie amongst the participants, volunteers and staff. Joining the program was the best decision I ve made in a long time. I am very glad I joined the program. My quality of life is getting better with each swing! Before joining the program, my balance and strength were not good. Today, my quality of life has improved. I am stronger. My balance has improved. I am more flexible and have a more positive mental attitude. The positive and fun attitude of the participants is contagious. The program has changed my outlook on life, helping me improve both physically and mentally. Before joining the program, my life was smaller and not as rich. I am now more active and have more to look forward to in life. I love seeing participants succeed and make progress in their daily lives. I ve gained emotional strength from everyone and feel so much better physically. My confidence in other aspects of my life has increased. I am starting to look for odd jobs around town. Prior to joining the program, I was homebound. This is a new family for me, showing care and concern for on another. I know we will have fun and benefit from the day.
