Well, maybe just a little bit! The Highlands Plateau has certainly lived up to its designation of being a Rain Forest these past few weeks! In spite of the wet weather the show continued on for most of our traditional Cullasaja events. Thank you for all of your support and patience as we juggled our Kid s Camp and 4th of July holiday programs. We continue to receive rave reviews about our newly renovated Clubhouse. The ambience and relaxing feel of the newly decorated areas along with the additional space has allowed us to better serve you and your guests. Thank you for your tremendous support which is noticeably reflected through our Food & Beverage sales. While the weather has put a damper on both our golf and tennis programs, it has provided excellent growing conditions for our new Croquet Lawn. The Lawn is projected to open for play in early to mid August. Stay tuned for the announcement of Opening Day at the Lawn! As you may know, we were forced to postpone our Kid s Camp Fishing Contest and the Cullasaja Duck Race due to inclement weather. We have rescheduled the Fishing Contest for Saturday, August 31st at 9:30am followed by Duck Race that same day at 4:00pm. Details on both events will be communicated closer to the events. IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER: July 28th BEER & BRATS July 31st CANCER CHALLENGE GOLF, DINNER AND JEWELRY SHOW August 10th LOBSTER NIGHT AND JAZZ WITH LAURA COYLE September 1st LABOR DAY PIG PICK IN COOKOUT October 3rd & 4th MIXED CLASSIC INVITATIONAL October 11th FALL FOR CULLASAJA DINNER-DANCE SOCIAL 2
by Debbie Leonard & Ken Wheeler KIDS CAMP DAY 1 DAY 1 Highlands Aerial Park: There was a nature trail hike that ended at a spectacular water fall where we dug for Gems. Groups played field games and spent time on a lower version of a Zip Line course called the Brave Indian course. It included rope bridges, wobbly platforms and two zip lines. 3
KIDS CAMP DAY 2 Here is how the week played out DAY 2 Fun Factory followed by Scaly Mountain Outdoor Center: they enjoyed carnival and arcade games, drove go carts and bumper cars, played Put Put golf and ate Pizza for lunch. When the sky cleared we headed to a planned event at Scaly Mountain Outdoor Center for Summer Tubing fun. 4
Here is how the week played out KIDS CAMP DAY 3 DAY 3 Highlands Recreation Center: where we played a variety of games, and even got some time in the pool. Most really enjoyed a final event where we played Dodge Ball Campers VS Counselors. ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EVENT IN SPITE OF THE RAIN! A TOTAL OF 67 KIDS FROM AGES Kids Camp is a highlight of our year with every department supporting the effort. We hope that it makes memories for all Cullasaja children and grandchildren so they want to keep coming back year after year as they make Cullasaja Club home in the summer. 5

MALLETS & MARTINI S by Terry Fugate and Ken Wheeler Many of you have asked if we will carry demo mallets and the answer is yes. We have 3 different styles for you to try they are available in the Tennis Pro Shop. You may demo on your own or during one of our Thursday afternoon match play sessions. As you can see from the photos we have more new croquet players showing up each week for instruction and match play. Croquet is every Thursday afternoon at 5:00PM so come on out and enjoy the fastest growing game on the plateau. Several of our members were invited over to Wildcat to play on their full size croquet lawn on Friday June 14th. Thanks to Lane and Clint Dawkins for arranging the matches for that day. During the month of July we were invited over to Highlands Country Club to play on their croquet lawn with some of their members. Once again Mr. & Mrs. Dawkins arranged for us to travel over there and play with some of their members without the pressure of an Inter-Club match. The date for the trip over there is Monday July 29th. Please RSVP that you would like to be part of our group that is going that day we can have between players FROM THE GREEN-Strange Weather by Tom Nelson The weather this spring and early summer, to put it mildly, has been extremely wet. To date (July 8th) we have received nearly 88 inches of rainfall. That is our annual average and we still have nearly 6 months to go!! In the 8 day span from June 30th through July 7th we accumulated 22 of rain. While we have done extensive drainage and topdressing over the years, I don t think any drainage system can stand up to that amount of water in that timeframe. The excessive rain has caused several issues on the course. The wet conditions have prevented us from completing our mowing procedures, leading to less than desirable playing conditions. Our new sod around the greens has also suffered from the rain. While sod does need water, it also needs oxygen in the root-zone to become well established. You may notice, particularly in the high traffic areas, the sod has thinned out. This is due to both the delays in the installation and the wet conditions leading to compaction of the soil. We have core aerified these areas and feel confident that they will rebound when the weather improves. On a brighter note, our poa promotion strategy has been moving along nicely. So far this season, the greens have had a much more uniform appearance. We have altered our fertilization schedule and changed up some of the plant protectant products that are applied. No doubt the cool wet weather has also contributed to our success. We plan to continue our efforts and evaluate the turf quality for the next several seasons. 8

by Ken Wheeler WATER AEROBICS: WHAT A SPLASH! SPLISH SPLASH I WAS TAKING A CLASS Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:15 a.m. things tend to get rowdy at the pool. This is not a complaint on the contrary- this is a great thing! The music gets turned up; the pool is invaded by BIG kids and the Water aerobics class starts stirring up the pool. For a long time this class consisted of all ladies. Then one summer, a Member who had some work done on his heart was talking to his Doctor about what kind of exercise program he could participate in. They discussed many things that would be too problematic post heart surgery then the Member mentioned the Club had a Water aerobics class. The Doctor jumped on it a great program in so many ways! With that one recommendation the class expanded greatly as several other Members heard of the benefits he described. FIRST, water aerobics is very low impact. The natural buoyancy of the body in water eases the shock on the joints as the body bounces around on the pool floor. This is especially important to those with arthritis or who have had joint replacements. SECOND, it is a cardiovascular exercise program. It is designed to increase the heart rate during the majority of the class. The benefits of cardio exercise are nearly unlimited especially since modern conveniences have taken most of the work out of our lives. THIRD, it is good for circulation. The key to Water Aerobics helping circulation is water pressure. The deeper you go the higher the pressure. This supports the circulatory system by compressing the legs to force blood back up toward the heart. FOURTH, it helps with flexibility. The water temperature helps ease the discomfort of arthritis and keeps muscles relaxed so that they stretch further while exercising. This class is ideal if there is a need to start an exercise program but are a little worried about too much strain or stress. The Members who participate in the class always have fun while getting in better shape. 11
MEMBERSHIP COMMUNICATIONS by Debbie Leonard WGA News {1} {2} Please join me in welcoming our newest Member: NEW NON-GOLFING MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM SHARON LOOS joined June 2013 SHE IS THRILLED THRILLED TO BE PART OF THE CULLASAJA FAMILY AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING THEM AROUND THE CLUB AND ENJOYING THE CULLASAJA LIFESTYLE! The WGA s first month of the season was filled with many exciting events and excellent member participation. During the month we had 2 major tournaments: Congratulations to Betsy Butler and Beth Elzemeyer, the 18 hole winners of our Member-Member Tournament in which 2 person teams competed for net best ball honors, and Barbara Roberts and Dorothy Lyles, the winning team for our 9 holers. We all showed we were not going to be deterred by a one day rain delay of the beginning of our Laurel Cup {3} championship and intermittent showers during the event. Beth Elzemeyer is our 18 hole champion of the 2 day net ringer event, and Linda Brannan won in a strong field of 9 holers. Kudos to you all!! Eight of our members played in the 18 hole interclub at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley and had a great time over there. One of our teams came in first!! Among our Tuesday events we had a Nassau format and played Heavenly Golf where Heavenly miracles helped us improve our scores! As you look at your July calendar, don t forget to play in our President s Cup on Tuesday, July 9th and Friday, July 12th. It is a 2 day Stableford event in which you receive points based on each hole s net score. There are both 18 and 9 hole divisions. This is one of our major tournaments of the year, so sign up and enjoy the fun! Please remember that since handicaps are more accurately reflecting each player s ability, there are no handicap limits for eligibility to play in either division. The Club Championship will be held on Thursday, August 8th and Friday, August 9th. Kathy Bowman and Ginny May have been hard at work preparing for our Cullasaja Cancer Challenge that begins on July 28th. Please be sure to see the article about all the fabulous events that have been planned and be sure to participate in this incredible fund raiser that WGA sponsors for the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital. Don t forget to sign up for the Member-Guest event August 22nd through 23rd, with a practice round being held on August 21st. Bettie Ingram, Jodie Graves, and Beth Elzemeyer have put together a wonderful tournament that will make us all proud! So, invite your friends for great days of golf and camaraderie! In addition to our Tuesday events for which many fun formats have been planned, we also have WGA open play tee times on Thursday mornings after the Ladies Clinics and on Saturday mornings. These are great times to fine tune your game, and enjoy friendship and the beauty of our course. Here s to seeing all of you out on the links!! {1} WGA LAUREL CUP WINNERS - LINDA BRANNAN & BETH ELZEMEYER {2} WGA Member- Member 9Hole winners - Barbara Roberts & Dorothy Lyles {3} WGA Member- Member 18Hole winners - Betsy Butler & Beth Elzemeyer 12
