QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 7 1 Out of the Rough March 2015 Presidents Message From Wal Harrison Welcome to the March Newsletter. Hope you are enjoying some good golfing weather. I am pleased to report that our financial position is still improving although the long and drawn out saga of the block sale is not over yet. The AGM was held on the 23 February and 39 members registered their attendance. The meeting was successful in dealing with most matters although it was suspended and will need to be reconvened at a later date to pass a resolution to accept the financials balance sheet and auditors report. The audit report was not available at the meeting and the auditor advised the meeting that he will sign off on the accounts once the funds have been received from the sale of the block. This was expected to be received well before the meeting. The financials were discussed and all questions answered. Thank you to member Ron Jackson for his assistance with the procedural matters associated with this unusual situation. The meeting unanimously accepted a proposal to grant Life Membership to Wayne McNally Congratulations Wayne on a well-deserved reward for many years of work with the club. On the golfing front there are lots of exciting events coming up. So clear your diaries and polish up the clubs to support your club. Watch the website for more details of these promotions. Good golfing Wal Harrison Information Night The match committee will be available from 6.30pm on Tuesday 10 March 2015 in the main lounge area to meet new members and discuss golf related matters in an informal atmosphere. All new members for the 2014/15 financial year are welcome to attend. MEMBERSHIP & GOLF PASS The club currently has two packages available for golfers, a $295 membership til 31 July 2015 or 20 social rounds for $270 valid til 31 December For more info go to
QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 7 2 COURSE NEWS Course Super Bryan Kelly The golf course in general is standing up quite well during a lengthy period of warm humid weather. It s been difficult to have the greens running at a good pace however rolling on Wednesday and Friday is now possible with the addition of another staff member John Goldsworthy. John is an experienced groundsman joining us from Gold Creek. Please make him welcome and yourselves known to him. The tees have been renovated (cored, seeded and sanded) so please continue to repair all divots and any others. The oversowing of cool season grass will commence on Monday 16th March. The costing for this initiative has been made possible through the levy. There will be no disruption to play during this process. Members please note that green staff have right of way at all times so please be patient and respect the staff's responsibilities. It is a dangerous occupation made a lot safer by your actions. Keep enjoying your golf Good golfing Bryan The Captain s Desk From Gail Goiser FOUR BALL MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP The cooler autumn weather is almost upon us and the golfing program is getting busy. The qualifying rounds for the Men s Fourball Matchplay concluded on Saturday 28 February and the top 32 pairs will begin matches on 28 March. Top score 95 and it looks like 74 or possibly 73 could get into the play offs. OPEN DAY A great day on Saturday 7 February, the course in excellent condition and the weather was perfect, 192 players and 1/4 of the field with handicaps of 5 or less. Congratulations to the winners Jakub Gancarz a junior from Yowani - 69 off the stick and our Pauline Jeffery winner for the Women. OTHER NEWS Australia at Kooyonga for Australian Boys Championship and then to Links Lady Bay course for Interstate matches. Trent Britton has been selected in the team of six and while he has not yet had a lot of opportunity to play in other states the team coach was impressed by his abilities and it is hoped he enjoys the week and a half mixing with the countries best junior golfers. Trent only started golf in 2013 and to now be representing is a wonderful achievement and it shows what can be done with talent and dedication to practice. I send congratulations to Chloe Thornton who will travel this month to America for a golfing experience organised by Jack Newton Golfing Foundation and in April will travel to South Australia to compete in Australian Girls Amateur. In early April I will again travel as Manager with the ACT DGA State team, this year to play in South
QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 7 3 Upcoming Events NO SHOWS TEE TIMES TIP FROM THE TOUR AUSTRALIAN THREE MAN AMBROSE The Australian Three Man Ambrose Championship to be held on Saturday the 7th of March has attracted over 170 players from most of the clubs with the ACT DGA. At this stage there are still some spots left at a cost of $120 per team with lunch included. Given that there is $4,000 in prizes this promises to be great event. The event will be a shot gun start from 7.45 and and open to all holders of a Golf Australia Handicap. RACE TO QUEANBEYAN A new series commenced on February 12 and has 4 weeks to go. Join the Fun in playing 7 holes on Thursday from 4.30pm with cash and golf ball prizes. The Race to Queanbeyan will be run over seven weeks with the top five scores counting towards the $ prize. Enter the 40 club with a chance to win $ each week. This has continued to improve with the number of no-shows improving. Remember to delete your name from the timesheet if you know that are unable to play as field sizes continue to grow. PENNANT RESULTS Pennant season is almost finished: A Grade play final round match on 15 March and will be struggling to get into the finals. A Reserve played final match at home on 1 March and awaiting other results and could miss in count back for Finals. B Grade have their final match at home Sunday 8 March, Section top, Tully Park are just too far ahead and will go forward to finals. Juniors had a win in final round but may miss final on game count back. Our Thursday pennant still have a couple of weeks and the Scratch team will be hoping for two wins to make sure they get to finals, sitting second in division so could be an exciting finish and are wished good golfing. Masters Handicap will host the final game on 12 March but unfortunately will not be playing in Finals. Thank you to all players for season 2015 and all good wishes to the teams still with a fighting chance. Bunkers: In major tournaments, they add sand to bunkers. They obviously do this to make it tougher, not easier. Most golfers complain about the lack of sand in bunkers, (where ever they go), but better bunker players prefer next to no sand. The reason for this is most golfers tend to hit too far behind the ball. So when there isn't much sand in the bunker, they tend to bounce into the ball and drill it over the green. However, if there was more sand in the bunker, the result would be just as bad, but with the ball rolling back to your feet. So remember when you get a chance to practice, draw a line in the sand about an inch behind the ball, that way you'll get some feedback as to why you struggle out of bunkers. Just a little food for thought. 4 QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 7 4 MYSTIFYING THINGS ABOUT GOLF Watching golf I can almost understand this one. Without ever experiencing the game it all appears quiet, dull, and boring. Add Renton Laidlaw s, soothing, avuncular tones over the top of a golf broadcast and it s likely the uninitiated will fall asleep if the remote control is not within arm s reach. And if you re keen to keep a group of non-golfing friends, it s wise to refrain from inviting them along to watch a golf tournament. Strange behaviour from golfers cannot be explained nor rationalised. ONE TEE TRIAL The one tee trial has been refined a bit with pennant and the influx of new members over the past 3 months. Green fee play on Saturday and Sunday afternoons continues to grow. Opening up of spots on the back nine on Saturdays for members has been successful with the numbers on Saturday up by approx. 25 players on the corresponding time last year. Women s News From Captain Sue 2015 has started well with good numbers of women playing and for the most part we have been able to have two divisions. The Captain versus President event was again a close encounter this year with the Presidents team being victorious 642 to 641. We have also welcomed a number of new ladies from the Beginner Ladies Program to our playing ranks. A big thank you to all who have given up their Sunday afternoons to assist in encouraging these newcomers. Fiona Doyle is one of those who has made the transition, and has already won the Tuesday Monthly for February with a nett score of 68. A number of players also participated in the Federal Women s Open Day. Pauline Jeffery was the Division 1 gross runner up, visitor longest drive and NTP winner. Sue Korth was the Division 1 nett winner, with Lee Maiden the Division 2 gross winner and Karen Ebsworth Division 2 nett runner up. Yvonne Heslop won the longest drive in Division 3. Chloe Thornton has been playing Pennant for the NSW Golf Club, and they are currently leading the competition. She has also been chosen to represent Australia, as part of the JNJG program, and is off to California in the next two weeks to play a number of games. Chloe will also be representing NSW at the Australian Junior Championships in Adelaide in April. The CSGA Pennant season has also commenced. Queanbeyan s Bronze Shield team played their first game against Gungahlin Lakes on Friday and had a hard fought draw. Our Bruce Cup side played Belconnen at Federal and had a wonderful 5/0 win. A great start in the defence of their title. Newcomer to pennant play, Louise Smith, played well despite the nerves, winning her match 3/2. US QBN THE GOLF CLUB Last year a hardy bunch of souls turned up at the golf club between 4 and 5 am and to watch the last round of the 2014 US Masters. By all accounts they had a ball so they have decided to do it again this year. The format is breakfast, watch the Masters and then go and play some golf with the pins in MASTERS positions. So if you are interested in the breakfast see Mick Higgins, George Pudja or promotions@queanbeyangolf.com. au for what will be a great morning of golf.
QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 7 5 GM s Update From Glen Lloyd As we come out the other end of another summer holiday season, things get back into full swing this month with district pennants and the Australian 3 person ambrose event to be held on Saturday 7 March This will be followed up by masters Monday and the 2015 Pro-Am in April. The course is in excellent shape so all bodes well for a cracking couple of months of golf. On a less positive note it is disappointing to report that several items have been stolen in and around the locker room area of the club. As a result internal access to the club from the locker room has been removed whilst investigations continue. Members are advised that all items stored at the club must be secured in your allocated locker. Buggies should not be left on top of lockers. If you wish to store a buggy we will provide additional space in the room under the balcony. Equipment is not insured by the club. Additional parking has been opened up in the previously reserved area of the carpark in response to the increase in membership numbers. We welcome Kris Andersen to the club as the new Bar Supervisor, taking on the role vacated by Kristy Gordon who leaves us to start a family in the near future. We wish Kris and Kristy all the best in their new roles. A new Social and Communications committee is in the process of being formed to assist in the development of social activities at the club and to provide more information to members through the website and other mediums. We hope all members support upcoming initiatives. New cleaners have commenced at the club and following a settling in period we should see a marked improvement in quality. As always if you wish to discuss any matter relating to the club my door remains open. Hit it, find it, then hit it again. SPONSORSHIP Members with businesses that may be interested in Club Sponsorships should contact Club Sponsorship Manager Des Byrne on or desbyrne08@gmail.com. Packages can include Membership, Advertising on-course, in-club or in newsletters, tickets to special events, Corporate Golf Days and other benefits tailored to your needs. Get the attention of members and visitors by promoting your business through the club channels now. Rounds have slowed in the last couple of months Remember: Keep behind the group in front, not in front of the group behind. If the group in front of you is more than one shot ahead (i.e. if they are on the green of a par-4 before you even tee off) you need to speed it up. Conversely, if there is no one ahead of you, but the group behind is constantly waiting for you to hit, either pick up the pace or let them play through. Go directly to your ball Move quickly to your own ball. Avoid travelling in a group from one ball to the other. When sharing a cart, drop off one player and then proceed to your own ball while he/she does their pre-shot routine. PASS
QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 7 6 Corporate Golf Days This could be you Recipe of the Month: Scones 300g (2 cups) self-raising flour, sifted 55g (1/4 cup) caster sugar 125ml (1/2 cup) thick cream 125ml (1/2 cup) lemonade 40ml (2 tablespoons) milk Call Paul Morshead on or Glen Lloyd on for more information. 1. Preheat the oven to 220C. Lightly grease a baking tray. 2. Place the flour, sugar and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large bowl. Add the cream and lemonade and mix to form a soft dough. Turn out onto a lightly floured workbench and knead lightly until combined. Press the dough with your hands to a thickness of about 2cm. Use a 6cm round cutter to cut out 8 scones, place on baking tray and brush the tops with some milk. Bake for minutes until lightly browned. Serve warm with your favourite jam.
QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 7 7 Junior News Membership Firstly I d like to welcome our new junior members to the Club Trenae Morshead, Jesse Dent and Nathan Exton. There is a promotion the club would like to undertake, the plan is to have two screens at McDonalds with various images promoting the Club and its activities; we would have our adverts run periodically for up to 15 seconds. I would like to take some photos of our juniors for this advert but firstly I need permission from parents or guardians, I have some forms with me and will leave some with the office, it s a great way to promote club. Pennants Our season opened with a bye at home as all the clubs will have, the second round result was a squared match with Gungahlin Lakes played at Gold Creek, the third round was a narrow loss to Federal played at Yass, the fourth round a win against Yass played at Gungahlin Lakes. The team put in some stellar individual performances with wins coming from behind to snatch the win at the final hole. Goes to show never give up as match play pressure can have a funny effect on competitors. Well done Trent Britton, Blake Christofersen, Nathan Bull, Matthew McKenzie, Harry Smith, Mitchell O Brien and Luc Abbott. Weekly Results Trent Britton had great result with a gross score of 72 in the Queanbeyan Open, well done. Lewis McLennan a net score of 68, Mitchell O Brien net score of 75, Luc Abbott net 75 in the February monthly medal. Matthew McKenzie, Harry Smith, Trent Britton scores of 35 points in stableford along with Mitchell O Brien 40 points great effort boys. The first round of the 4BBB S/F Qual (match play) was played on the 21st February, it s great to see father & son teaming up together, G McLennan N McLennan, J Bull N Bull, J Smith H Smith, with the second round to be played 28th February. Rules Applying to Juniors A maximum of two juniors are permitted to play in a group unless the competition is for juniors or requested by the starter of the competition, this rule doesn t apply to practice rounds. Jerry Smith Junior Development Committee Junior Clinic Mat is still out of action from his car accident. This has meant he has been unable to teach as often as usual, and that our Junior Clinics are currently on hold until he is comfortable to teach again. Apologies if this has inconvenienced any of our members, and hopefully he recovers soon.
