QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 5 1 Out of the Rough December 2014 Presidents Message From Wal Harrison I would like to bring members up to date with the current financial position of the club. Whilst we are still in an extremely tight cash flow situation it has been pleasing to see increases in all areas of income over the first three months of our new financial year. This coupled with a small reduction in costs has produced a positive cash flow for the period compared to an $88, cash loss for the corresponding period in Results have been posted on the notice board for those interested in more detail. Our advertising campaign has been successful as membership is starting to rebuild as is green fee revenue. The block of land at 17 Dodsworth St (next to the laneway entrance to our work shed) has had contracts for sale prepared and execution is expected on Monday 8th December. Whilst we hope to have access to the 10% deposit next week the final payment is not expected until the end of January. This has been happening for over 2 years. The block has been sold to a local builder Craig Campbell for $650, Whilst it was our preferred option to sell the block through auction we were placed in a position by our auditors and our Bank that we had to have a contract for sale in place by December. It is estimated that it would be the end of March before all Council approvals are obtained placing us in a position to hold an auction. Mr Campbell was the preferred purchaser following a competitive process which involved discussions with several developers and real estate agents. Two builders were selected to provide written offers of which Mr Campbell s was selected, being significantly higher than the other and also well above indications provided previously. It was also above the independent valuation conducted by Colliers International of $630k which was based on the approval of 6 x 3 bedroom townhouses. It has since come to light that only 5 x 3 bedroom townhouses would be approved which would reduce this valuation to below $600k. On the course front it is pleasing to see the fairways improving every day. The greens are magnificent so I am running out of excuses for poor scores. The only comment I have on the Captains vs Presidents day controversial result is that at least I toweled up the Captain. Finally to all our loyal members I thank you for your continued support and wish you and your families a safe and happy festive season and let s all hope for a prosperous New Year. Good Golfing Wal From the Editor In this edition: The kitchen will be closed from 22 December 2014 to 6 January Pies and sausage rolls will be available during this period, Social Play on weekends available from 1pm, and What s coming up?
QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 5 2 COURSE NEWS TIPS TO SPEED UP PLAY The golf course is holding up and playing quite well after an early introduction to Summer. It s obviously suiting many members with regular winning scores in all grades in or around the 40's. Well done to those winners. Some good rainfall has assisted in the courses irrigation requirements but regular watering during the holiday period and summer is of paramount importance. It takes 2-3 weeks of hard work to resurrect damaged greens and tees after a hot spell when irrigation has been inadequate, so regular watering will take priority over the next few months with hotter and dry weather predicted. It is more important to have healthy grass and a slower than expected putting surface than hard and fast greens creating a larger than necessary workload. Some staff over Xmas will be taking a brief but well-earned break so please continue filling your divots and repairing the pitch marks to assist those remaining in any small way. From me and all the green staff we wish you and your families a happy and safe Xmas / New Year period and look forward to It s been a satisfying year and look forward to the next knowing the golf course is improving year by year. Safe travels and good golfing to all. Course Super Bryan Kelly CONTRIBUTIONS Please send contributions and suggestions for future newsletters to ceo@queanbeyangolf.com.au. Captain Tim s Spin From Tim Sewell The Queanbeyan Cup and Team Challenge was played on 15th November under a clear blue sky with a gentle breeze. With the recent re-discovery of the actual Queanbeyan Cup trophy (apparently lost for a number of years) it was fitting that one of Queanbeyan s most dedicated golfers won on the day Daniel Goodchild with a score of 71 took out the cup from James Bull with an equally impressive 75. The Team Challenge was won by John Price, Trevor Anderson, Ian Duncan and Russ Kirkpatrick with a nett 211. The Mixed Foursomes preceded the Presentation night on the 22nd Nov. The day is a highlight in the Queanbeyan golfing calendar when men and ladies can get together, walk around the golf course and occasionally agree on which way the putt is going to break. This year s winners of the Championship were the team of Wendy Lynch and Dale Baker. Presentation night was the usual spectacular with none of the clichéd accompaniments so no red carpet, fireworks, long speeches, big dance numbers or controversies (if you don t count the fact I gave a trophy to the wrong person again sigh!). All of the Awards have been distributed but I would remiss if I didn t once again acknowledge the feats of Lachlan Tisma who won our Club Championship. I could write a long gloating piece about the results so I did and it is on the QGC Website Sunday 14th December is Hamper Day at Queanbeyan. Instead of the usual voucher prizes a Xmas hamper will be waiting for the winners of the Stableford medley.
QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 5 3 MYSTIFYING THINGS ABOUT GOLF Quiet Non-golfers will occasionally ponder why you need to keep quiet while someone is playing a golf shot. Tennis is often mentioned in the next breath. It s tempting to explain that we could all happily play with noise, but it s the unexpected noise that may lead to more twitches. But these are non-golfers we re talking about here. Handicaps Some non-golfers seem to have some idea that lower is better when it comes to handicaps but conversations usually go like this; What s your handicap? Someone might ask as you arrive late for the party after a long Saturday round. Uh, 15, you reply. Oh, ok. Is that good? Thank goodness very few non-golfers have heard about the Stableford scoring system. Nominations received for the next Board are: President Wal Harrison Vice President Aina Blyton Captain Gail Goiser Board Members Daniel Goodchild Garry Swanston Jerry Smith Stephen Dinn Elizabeth Clark Leigh Blyton RACE TO QUEANBEYAN TIP FROM THE TOUR Putting Tip Next time you watch a tournament on TV, watch the top players putt. One thing you will notice is the putter head never gets too high off the ground throughout the stroke. A great thought to have when putting is to keep the blade nice and low to the ground, this will give you a much more consistent roll when putting. Remember, if you are struggling with any part of your game, Mat and I are available for lessons! TIPS TO SPEED UP PLAY Read the green while others are putting As you approach the green, check the contours, high/low points and overall slope of the entire green. While others are putting, you can then take the opportunity to read your particular break and determine your pace, etc. Watch others putts to get further information about speed and break. Once your partner has putted out, you should be immediately ready to hit your own ball. Nathan Jess receiving his $400 first prize from President Wal. The Race to Queanbeyan concluded last Thursday as it started, under the threat of thunderstorms. Nathan Jess the runaway leader kept up his good form to win another weekly and take home the major prize. A new series will commence in February. WANT MORE INFORMATION Speak to Jake or Matt in the Pro Shop Contact Info: TIPS TO SPEED UP PLAY TIPS TO SPEED UP PLAY ONE TEE TRIAL The one tee hit off has been in for a month now. From the clubs perspective it has been a success with green fee receipts up 50%. This is sorely needed revenue that the club needs to survive and enable membership subscriptions to remain at a similar price. At this stage it is planned to continue with the trial into How has the one tee off affected you and are you comfortable with the new arrangements?
QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 5 4 MEMBERSHIP & GOLF PASS Women s Year in Review From Captain Sue The club currently has two new packages available for golfers, a $395 membership or 20 social rounds for $270. For more info go to Four married guys go golfing on Sunday. During the 3rd hole the following conversation ensued: First Guy: "Man, you have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out golfing this weekend. I had to promise my wife that I will paint every room in the house next weekend." Second Guy: "That's nothing, I had to promise my wife that I will build her a new deck for the pool." Third Guy: "Man, you both have it easy! I had to promise my wife that I will remodel the kitchen for her." They continue to play the hole when they realised that the fourth guy has not said a word. So they ask him. "You haven't said anything about what you had to do to be able to come golfing this weekend. What's the deal?" Fourth Guy: "I don't want to talk about it. Let's just say that the foundation for the new house is being poured next Tuesday. Once again we find ourselves closing in on the end of another season. The 2014 season has seen Queanbeyan women represent our Club well in District events held this year. We are also pleased to welcome our new General Manager, Glen Lloyd, who has hit the ground running. Whilst our membership numbers have remained steady, our playing numbers this year have been low. Hopefully with the improving weather we will see an increase in these numbers. The Club Championships for 2014 Lauren Maher (304) with Chloe Thornton (315) the runner up. Kerry Mynott took out the nett (292) with Pam Sassella r/u (295). Division 2 was won by Gail Goiser (399) with Linley Huish (401) not far behind. Gail also won the nett event and the Best Veteran with 289. The CSGA Open Day was held in March and Karen Ebsworth was the Division 2 Champion of Champion winner, with Wendy Lynch winning the Diabetes Trophy on the day. Congratulations to Kylie Smith and Chloe Thornton for their win in the 2014 Foursomes Championships held in May. The runners up were Linda Dorsett and Louise Smith. The nett winners were Shirl Weber and Liz Clark. Queanbeyan won the Bruce Cup for 2014 making this the 28th win out of forty years of the competition. The final was played at Gungahlin Lakes against Yowani, winning 3.5 to 1.5. Our other teams competed well but unfortunately were unable to make the finals. Thankyou to everyone who represented the Club as players and caddies. Our Women s Holden Scramble was again a successful day. The winning team was Pauline Jeffery, Fran Miller, Wendy Lynch and Shirl Weber. The team of Joyce Hotchkis, Deb Baker, Kylie Smith and Michelle Gerbich were also successful in winning the Gungahlin Lakes Holden Scramble. Our Guest Day was held in July and was a great success with good numbers in attendance. Six of our members represented the CSGA in the inter district match against WGN and WGI at Yowani on 11th August. The players were Kylie Smith, Chloe Thornton, Pauline Jeffery, Wendy Lynch, Amber Thornton and Colleen Langi. Two teams, Judy Tucker and Pauline Jeffery with Karen Ebsworth and Fran Miller, qualified for the 4BBB District Final held at Moss Vale on 15th August. The Beginner Women s initiative continues as an 8 hole competition on Sundays. Thank you to Pauline Jeffery and the other players who have given time to encourage our beginners. Thank you to our hard working Committee for their efforts in 2014, and I look forward to bigger and better results next year.

QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 5 6 GM s Update From Glen Lloyd Now 6 months into my tenure as General Manager I look back on an extremely difficult period for the club. With finances strained to breaking point a lot of work has gone into securing the club s survival. I am very grateful for the support I have received from the Board throughout this time. I can assure every member that the Board and myself have the club s best interests at heart and are doing everything in our power to ensure its viability. It was once said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting to achieve a different result. So change we must and in doing so there will undoubtedly be bumps in the road. Nothing will be set in stone and flexibility will be the new order. We must adapt with the times and circumstances or risk extinction. The golf course will be a priority over the coming year with fairways to be oversown next March with cool season grasses to ensure their playability year around. Bunkers will be reviewed following this. With the course back in peak condition we will aggressively promote membership, corporate and social golf so we can limit any increase in subscriptions moving forward. It should be noted that the current full playing subscription is well below some other comparative courses. At the time of writing the sale of 17 Dodsworth Street is imminent. This development will assist the club in reducing debt, and assist trading over the next 12 months. It should not be considered as a long term solution to the club s financial future. We must continue to increase revenue and restrict costs. If we want the club to return to past glories we must all do our part. This can include buying a drink after your round or booking the function room for your next get together. It all helps! Your feedback is extremely important to the Board and myself as we endeavour to map the clubs future. Everyone is encouraged to think outside the square and all opinions count. Merry Christmas to everyone and a safe journey for all those travelling. See you all in Glen Can you spot the Queanbeyan member watching Rory McIlroy at last week s Australian Open? 8 QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 5 8 Junior News Chloe and Amber Thornton competed in Brett Ogle Junior Masters played at Goulburn on the weekend November with excellent results. Chloe finished equal 2nd with rounds 74 and 75 and Amber was 4th with very different rounds. The first day 79 was followed by the most memorable 1 below par 71 on the Sunday. This might be her first sub- par round but I am sure it won t be her last.congratulations. Both girls played Bonville for the Champions Trophy event on 2-5 December with Chloe finishing fourth and Amber unfortunately missing a tightly contested cut. Matt McKenzie is enjoying his golf at the moment and if the scores during November are any indication he will be reducing his handicap quickly over the summer. Saturday 22nd Plus 4, Sunday 23rd - 41 Points and then Sunday 30th 47 points Kris Cole was 2nd in the Junior District Championship played at Federal on 30th November. On Thursday 20 November the two local High Schools competed in inter-school challenge and a number of our juniors played. The day included 18 holes of golf for the better players, a lunch on the front deck supplied by Junior Committee and prizes for all presented by Greg Cummins. Blake Christofersen captained Karabar and Trent Britton captained Queanbeyan High and in their close match it was Trent who won but only by 2. Queanbeyan High was awarded the trophy and now each school has won twice and all are looking forward to Our junior representatives also included Lachlan Ingram, Matt McKenzie, Joe Furlanetto and Luc Abbott. This Sunday is Ambrose Day and at least 10 of our juniors will be playing and are wondering who their partner will be. The draw will be done during lunch and thank you to our low handicap members for participating. Thanks also to George Pudja whose sponsorship makes the event possible. Gail Goiser Junior Development Committee Junior Clinic Mat has been out of action recently with a bad back injury sustained during a car accident. This has meant he has been unable to teach as often as usual, and that our Junior Clinics are currently on hold until he is comfortable to teach again. Apologies if this has inconvenienced any of our members, and hopefully he recovers soon.
