1 QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 11 1 Out of the Rough JULY 2015 Presidents Message From Wal Harrison Hope you are all enjoying the nice cold weather. It certainly has been testing those early morning starters. Unfortunately it has not been too cold for our feathered friends who are causing substantial damage to the fairways. Other courses are experiencing the same problems and all the Superintendents are experimenting with ways to solve the problem. Membership renewals are due and I encourage all members to make sure they have paid by the end of July to avoid being locked out of the booking system. Congratulations to Ray Evans on winning the refund of annual fees draw. Ray had joined as a platinum member. Work has begun on the back bunker on the 18th which will result in a shallow bunker which hopefully will no longer double as a swimming pool. Thank you to those who attended the Pennants appreciation dinner. The evening was enjoyed by all. What s in this Edition? Jake the Joker stands at $1200 for 3 July. Members hitting other members on the course Membership Cards Pro-shop Last chance to use Reward Points that expire on 31 July
2 QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 11 2 COURSE NEWS TIPS TO SPEED UP PLAY Course Super Bryan Kelly Winter has arrived with some extreme frosts sending the couch and kikuyu into dormancy. The over sown rye is doing well and will increase coverage as the plant matures. The turf plots on the 5th are an indication of the difference in coverage and appearance of a plant 12 months old compared to this seasons over sow. Recent rains with fertilizer has assisted in the winter growth. Bird damage remains a problem and whilst the kikuyu is with us the damage continues. All effort in relocating the birds to an alternative food source are being made. Removal of dead trees has been approved by council so those trees will be removed at some stage during winter. Tree roots have also been sliced. Recent good winter rainfall suggests Spring will see anticipated growth during August/September and around greens and tee renovation time. The golfing numbers are encouragingly good so hope you are all enjoying your leisure time during winter. Good golfing to all COURSE NEWS The Captain s Desk From Gail Goiser 4BBB NSW MIXED QUALIFYING Tony Quirk and Jane Grey were our representatives at the district final played at Yass on 14 June. Tony reported that all was going well for most of the game but unfortunately not a winning score at the end. 4BBB NSW MENS QUALIFYING- Dom Di Campli and Paul Morshead continue recording good results in team events and will be our representatives, disappointingly only 7 pairs paid the $5 entry fee, at district final. Good golfing at Fairbairn on Sunday 2 August. MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP- The second round of matches have been played with the third round due 11 July and finals 25 July. CELEBRATION DINNER Sixty members attended on Sunday 28 June for a nice roast meal, lots of chatter and music. Next year we will try to have the dinner closer to pennant season and look forward to more members joining in. MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL WINNER ADIES HOLDEN SCRAMBLE Ray Evans was the lucky member drawn in the membership promotion. Ray joined as a Platinum Member. Thanks to those that paid their membership by 30 June. Congratulations Ray and happy golfing. AMAZING SCORE LADIES HOLDEN SCRAMBLE In the American Foursomes last Sunday Steve Dwight and Charlie Fitzgerald were the winners, with a net score of 65.88, nothing unusual about this? Except they shot 3 under around the back nine off the stick..great effort lads.

4 QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 11 4 GM s Update From Glen Lloyd One month of winter out of the way, only 2 more to go! A number of people have asked to have more information communicated regarding matters arising at committee and board meetings. I would like to take this opportunity to advise of a number of matters currently on the agenda. Bunkers The rear bunker on hole 18 (see diagram on page 8) is in the process of being reduced and reshaped to alleviate the drainage issues that have been plaguing it over recent years. In addition the right hand greenside bunker will be filled in the near future and replaced with swales and mounds. The trunk of the greenside cypress will be exposed to reduce the number of balls lost within the tree. The bunker rectification program will take a number of years to complete. Land The block of land known as 17 Dodsworth street has settled with funds utilised to clear the club s bank overdraft and pay out creditors. A development committee is to be formed to assess the development potential of other areas of land to secure the club s future. Budget The budget for the upcoming financial year has been finalised. TAB/KENO The recent issues with the TAB and KENO have been rectified with stability greatly improved. The TAB area will be restructured over the next month to provide an improved facility. AGM The reconvening of the AGM took place on Tuesday 30 June The motion to accept the 2013/14 financial statements and auditors report was passed. Capital Items A number of capital items have been identified as requiring upgrading/replacement. These items will be prioritised with no action occurring until financially viable. Contracts Over the past few months the contracts of the CEO, course superintendent and Golf Professional have been reviewed and revised. Lease A new 5 year licence agreement over the front 9 will be signed shortly at a reduced rate to the previous agreement. Wednesday Open Competitions The previous Open competition held on the final Wednesday of each month will cease on 31 July Members may utilise vouchers to invite guests in the future. Staffing John Goldsworthy resigned from the greens staff to return to warmer climates for health reasons. Konika Elphick obtained a fulltime position in real estate. We wish them both all the best. Advertising A new ad on WIN/GEM TV promotes the new range of flexible memberships available for the next financial year. Membership As at 31 May 2015 we had 705 playing members. This is up from 545 as at 30 August Membership renewals 216 members renewed prior to 30 June Ray Evans was the winner of the early bird promotion Constitution and Bi-Laws Ron Jackson has kindly offered to review the clubs Constitution and Bi-Laws with a view to updating them. Work for the Dole The club will participate in a work for the dole program commencing in August This will allow us to undertake many tasks that we are normally unable to achieve due to our limited resources. Handicaps We have been working closely with Golf NSW on the new handicap system to ensure its success and acceptance moving forward. Bird damage A drone has been ordered as the latest bird deterrent. Members will be notified of results once the drone is in operation. Happy hour The $3 happy hour concludes on Sunday 5 July If any member wishes to discuss any of these matters or any other please make a time to drop in and see me. CONTRIBUTIONS Please send contributions and suggestions for future newsletters to ceo@queanbeyangolf.com.au.
5 QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 11 5 Recipe of the Month Russian Pelmeni TIP FROM THE TOUR NEXT VOLUNTEER DAY Any interested volunteers please contact Des Byrne on or desbyrne08@gmail.com. Volunteers should bring along gloves, hat and sturdy footwear. Beer n Burger on completion! STATE OF ORIGIN 3 $3 Schooners from 5pm until half time Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups flour 2 eggs 1/2 cup warm water 1 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 lb. ground beef 1/2 lb. ground pork 2 medium onions, finely chopped 1/2 tsp. black pepper Sift the flour into a large pile on a clean surface. Make an indentation in the top and crack the eggs into that indentation. Adding the warm water gradually, knead the dough vigorously. Cover the dough and let stand for 30 minutes. In a separate bowl, mix the beef, pork, onions, pepper, and ½ tsp salt together. Working on a flour-dusted surface, roll the dough into a long snake one inch in diameter. Cut the dough at one-inch intervals and roll the pieces into circles 1/16 to 1/32 of an inch thick. Place a tablespoon of the meat filling in the center and fold the dough over, pinching it to completely seal the pelmeni into a small packet and turn the corners to face each other, making a small circle. Boil a generous amount of water with 1 tsp. salt. Drop the pelmeni into the boiling water. They are ready to eat when they float to the top and stay there. 6 QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 11 6 PLAYER SAFETY 1 ST & 9 TH HOLE MEMBERSHIP & GOLF PASS There have been several reports of players simply walking up to their ball and attempting to hit it back over the trees to the 1 st green over the 9 th green while their fellow unsuspecting members are chipping or putting on the 9th green. Call Paul Morshead on or Glen Lloyd on for more information. We have come up with a new concept T10 Corporate Golf: 10 holes of golf A mixture of two holes per green and big holes Minimum of 16 players and up to 40 Carts included 3 drinks schooner of beer equivalents Finger food on completion Shot Gun start preferred Mid Week only Cost is $45 per person SUPPORT THE CLUBS SPONSORS 10% off purchases for members presenting their card for the month of July During June a lady member playing the first hole was struck on the throat by an impatient and errant male member who was playing the ninth. It is not uncommon for many of us to carve our opening tee shot (from the 1st) out onto the 9th fairway or vice versa. I know it seems like you have to wait for an eternity for the people to finish putting out or make their way up the fairway and then potentially having to wait for the next group of golfers to finish teeing off from the 1St or 9th tee. Please have a think about your actions and respect your fellow golfers. It s a tough shot and rushing it will only increase the chances of a wayward ball screaming towards the 9th green. More often than not, the players on the 9th green will give you the green light to play your shot. But if not, please wait and proceed only when safe for all concerned. This also goes to other parts of the course, please take care and remember safety is paramount would you like someone hitting over you? QUEANBEYAN PREMIER LEAGUE An exciting new teams event will start up in October called the Queanbeyan Premier Golf League. Each team to nominate 8 players. Up to three players can be non-queanbeyan members - they must hold a Golf Australia Handicap. Cost is $40 per team and $10 per Monday night from approx pm. 10% off initial consultation for members presenting their card Format will be a 10 hole match play concept. From the 8 players, 4 players will play in a series of events against other teams every Monday for 4-6 weeks (depending on number of team entries) i.e. single fourball, ambrose etc. Stay tuned for more info.
