4 PRESIDENTS REPORT Dear fellow members, it s an honour and privilege to present this annual report to you as President of Queanbeyan Golf Club. Although I am now the President, as at the end of our financial year (31/7/17) we were still being led by Wal Harrison to whom we should be grateful for his personal efforts and stewardship which were significant in keeping our doors open. Before commenting on the financial performance of the last year and some discussion of the future for our club, I wish to publicly acknowledge the efforts of many who have contributed to the improved position. Firstly, our members who have stayed with us. It s always a contentious matter for membership fees to be raised in the manner that occurred at the start of the year. It was not an easy decision for our Board to resolve but it was a very necessary lift in revenue for the operations to continue. Your commitment to maintaining your membership of this great club is appreciated and the Board is committed to delivering future decisions which will reward this loyalty. To our sponsors as well as a big thank you for committing your corporate brand to the club. This is another source of revenue that the club relies on to deliver the services to members. The Board is also committed to ensuring that you receive excellent value for your sponsorship dollars. Within the clubhouse, our GM David Doyle, Jo and Shiona at the front desk, Jesse, Sharon, Nick, Zac, Jade and Issy behind the bar. You have all contributed to improving the clubhouse activity over the past year. Thank you for those efforts on behalf of the members. Still in the clubhouse the introduction of new catering team lead by Peter and his son Victor has been a great improvement in such an important service. We are very happy to have you contributing to the services of the club, and look forward to a mutually beneficial business relationship for years to come. Up in the Pro Shop with Jake, Matt and the team of young golfers we are very well provided for. They are always welcoming and ready to provide assistance in any manner that will improve our golf experience. We look forward to supporting you in the years ahead so that your operations can prosper along with those of the club. Out on the course it was vastly different 12 months from a climate perspective compared to that reported on previously. Bryan, Jimmy, Richard, Jamie and Mark have worked tirelessly to deliver a course for us to play on week in week out. There have been challenges at times; weather, unwanted animal incursions (birds, rabbits etc.), equipment, cashflow constraints, however on a whole they have done a superb job. We hang our hat on having the best greens in the region and once again I am confident to defend that reputation thanks to their fine efforts. Until I joined the Board I was largely unaware of the extent of volunteer activity throughout the club. The membership as a whole is extremely well represented by a number of volunteers; I won t attempt to name people in case I miss someone. These members contribute to various gardens around the course, general course preparation (assisting BK s team) and general course tidiness, as well as many administrative duties each month. Thank you to all of those who contribute in such a way. For any other member that is interested in lending a hand along the way, please enquire with David or any of the Board members to see what may be needed. To the current board members and those who have left the board during the past 12 months. Thank you for your contributions both in the time commitment and leadership for our club. To the committee members who assist each board member every month in coordinating their respective portfolios a big thank you as well because without that commitment and assistance the monthly operations throughout the club would not be possible. 5 FINANCES During the year ending 31 July 2017, the club once again faced some serious trading challenges, which were ultimately abated when we received payment from our insurers for settlement of the Cantle Cottage fire claim in early July Overall Revenue for the club to 31/7/17 was $2,518,085 an increase of $528,979 on that for the 12 months ending 31/7/16. However, as the Profit and Loss Statement shows, the insurance proceeds from Cantle Cottage amounted to $450,000 so without that the revenue increase was attributable to the Member Subscriptions and improved conference/seminar income. Expenses (excluding depreciation) were actually reduced over the 12 months to 31 July 2017 compared with the previous year, which is not an easy task in any form of business or even personal finances for that matter. This was crucial for continued operations for much of the year as the cashflow from trading was very tight through to receipt of the insurance claim funds. The cashflow circumstances until mid-july were a significant inhibitor of allocating the Greens Levy monies collected during the year. However, be assured that the funds collected to 31 July 2017 and since that time have been identified and provisioned for work throughout the 2018 year. The Board will be considering a works plan from the Greens Committee during late 2017/early 2018 and further updates will be provided through monthly newsletters. In the earlier paragraph, I excluded depreciation for the purpose of providing a comparison of general expenditure year on year. However, for a club such as ours with a large investment in plant and equipment necessary for the continued effective operations (club and course), it is essential that we can appropriately provision for replacement and upgrading of such assets over time. Therefore, our Net Profit performance for the year; if we strip out the one-off insurance claim, is actually ($166,624) and that is obviously still well short of where it needs to be to ensure a prosperous future inclusive of those services we all enjoy at the club a great golf course, a vibrant and welcoming club house, successful contractors in the catering and pro-shop etc. FUTURE The Board along with David, Jake, Bryan and their teams are committed to the challenges that are ahead of us and look forward to delivering the services that you as members enjoy. We will be looking at various strategies throughout the coming year that promote the long-term prosperity of the club. In return I will seek from you as members a commitment to utilise the club for more than just a round of golf, for example: - 1. an increased support of the club house services throughout the year. If each member that rarely goes in could find a way to lift that support to once a fortnight or even once a month, that will help to improve our finances over the year ahead; 2. remember the club for those family or workplace celebrations by making a function room booking or 2; 3. remember the club for those workplace, interest group golf days, especially on those non-competition days throughout the week (Monday, Thursday and Friday). Contact David or Jake to discuss your next corporate event. Thank you for the opportunity to represent you as President of our club. Adrian Coles Queanbeyan Golf Club ABN

6 CAPTAINS REPORT The year from August 2016 was a difficult time for our members, the financial position was under a lot of scrutiny and it forced a major increase in annual membership subscription fees. A lot of members were angry, and some made the decision to no longer remain members, it was a sad time but by the end of July 2017 our membership base was almost back to normal. As Captain I am most fortunate to have a great team of members who form our Match Committee. Always willing to work very hard to have smooth running of all golfing events and I thank each of them. Vice-Captain Leigh Blyton is thanked for his never-ending support and his availability to solve the problems that arise in the clubhouse and on the course. Ian McKenzie looks after the computer golf booking program, a difficult job with all the special golfing requirements. Ray Dorsett, Ian O Donnell and Ian Wallace also share many of days of roster. Pauline Jeffery keeps us up to date with rules and also takes her turn on roster when available. Jake Nagle brings to committee the ideas and problems that he becomes aware of at the Pro Shop. Women s captain Deb Baker brings the needs of our women to meetings for discussion. The course was in perfect condition for the Club Championships in October 2016, but Bryan Kelly and his staff had more difficult conditions to contend with when rainfall almost ceased shortly after. Bryan and his staff are thanked for the extra effort they all gave to present the course in the best possible condition before the birds came in to mess up the fairways. The Honour Board lists those who have now got their names added to our Club perpetual trophies, some for only the first time and all are congratulated on their successes. In November 2016 the Queanbeyan Cup attracted many visitors from the area and Lachlan Tisma recorded a three below par 67, four shots clear of the field, his name added to the club trophy. November 2016 saw Queanbeyan again host the first day of ACT Seniors Championship and again were praised on the excellent condition of our course. The ACT Seniors Championship has booked the course again for 2017 and hopefully for many years ahead. The Queanbeyan Open in February 2017, our first major event each calendar year again was a great result for one of our players. Kris Cole recorded a two below par and victory by three shots from Belconnen junior David Howard. Throughout the year non honour board events also saw Queanbeyan players doing well. Dom Di Campli and Paul Morshead were the winners of the state final of the Men s NSW Fourball at Bonneville in October Then in 2017 Dave Cunningham and Larry Britten qualified in the Men s NSW Fourball and were hopeful of having the same result as Dom and Paul. For Pennant 2017, we had teams in A, A Reserve, Handicap and Junior in Sunday pennant with Scratch and Handicap teams in Thursday Masters and all players are thanked for participating and representing our club for this major district event. We had a great win from our juniors and with such low junior membership this was truly exceptional. Jerry Smith has worked hard with the team and the group meets often with Jake and Mat in the Pro Shop for guidance. We will have almost the same team compete in the 2018 competition and hopefully with the same result. In closing I congratulate all those who have had good results and happy memories throughout the year and those without wins the hope that 2016/2017 year will be better. 8 GENERAL MANAGERS REPORT I have been at the club for 18 months now and a lot has happened in those few months. Firstly, we lost the great Wal Harrison a man with huge passion for this club and a much-valued mentor to me, he will be missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him. As I said in last year s report the first objective in my plan of action was to get the word out that we had a lovely little club with a lot of atmosphere. I am pleased to say that the word has been getting around the local area and our visitation numbers have been going up in the past 12 months. We have managed to attract and keep quite a few corporate groups that see our venue as just right for their needs. There are several groups that now use our function room on a regular basis for staff training as well as regular logistical meetings for emergency services. We have attracted many family birthday parties from 18th s to 80th s and all have enjoyed the atmosphere and service they receive from our bar staff and caterers. Speaking of the caterers, Peter Prineas and now his son Victor have done a great job in attracting and keeping customers to the Bistro. The food they present is always plentiful and exactly what our customers are looking for, great value. When I started last year our numbers on Tuesday and Wednesday nights were very low, but because of the food on offer these nights have really improved. The menu is always being fine-tuned to cater for all tastes. Our golf course is still the envy of everyone in the Canberra region, especially the greens as we all know. Bryan, Jimmy, Richard, Jamie and Mark congratulations and thanks for your great efforts, the course is a tribute to your dedication to the job. We have been negotiating with our insurance company over the past two years for two claims, one; the Cantle Cottage fire claim as you know has been resolved. The other claim for Business Interruption is still ongoing but I hope for a resolution soon. We are still watching every penny and thinking of new revenue streams to enhance our bottom line, so we need all members to participate in the rejuvenation of our club by making a conscious effort in using the facilities for family get togethers or just making a regular date for lunch or dinner, it all helps. I would like to thank our Board members that make the effort in volunteering their time and energy, if it wasn t for them where would we be. To Adrian our new President, thank you for your efforts and good luck in the next year. Thanks also to our clubhouse staff, a small but hardworking crew; Jo, Shiona, Jesse, Sharon, Nick, Zac, Jade and Issy. You are the face of the club and your efforts are always noticed, thank you. A big thanks to Jake and Matt in the Pro Shop, it is a pleasure to work with you guys. We will have a new Board of Directors after the AGM at the end of November. Please give them your support and as I always say, my door is always open for any member, come and see me at our club. David Doyle Queanbeyan Golf Club ABN

9 WOMEN S PRESIDENT REPORT The 2017 year has been a very successful one for the women members of the Queanbeyan Golf Club. Our playing numbers have increased, new friendships have been formed, support has been given to one another in various ways and our prowess on the course has been evident in our competitions and throughout the District. I would like to thank this year s Committee members for their hard work to ensure our golfing experience has been a pleasurable one. The 2017 Committee has comprised: Pauline Jeffery - Vice-President; Debbie Baker - Captain; Pam Sassella - Vice-Captain; Yvonne Heslop - Secretary; Karen Ebsworth - Handicap Manager; Debra Benney and Cathy Hanrahan - Committee members; and myself. Each member of the Committee has their own role and we have worked well together. Our Secretary Yvonne Heslop has carried much of the load and I would like to thank her for the diligence and competence with which she has undertaken her task. Several of the Committee members hold positions on the various sub-committees of the Board and we appreciate that extra commitment and the women s views they are able to inject into the discussions. This year we have been fortunate to have three women members on the Club s Board - Liz Clark, Gail Goiser and Cathy Hanrahan. As a Club we were saddened by the death of our President, Wal Harrison. His tenure as President guided the Club through a very difficult financial period and set us on a much sounder footing. Members of the Committee represented the women at his funeral. This year the Women s Committee has had to work within the new financial structure of the Club. As we are now required to operate on a year by year basis it is fortunate that we have had good playing numbers which have enabled us to build up a reasonable balance to cover our end-of-year prizes. To enable the smoother running of both our finances and administration the Women s Committee is proposing that the Club By-Laws be amended to change our golfing year from 1 October-30 September as it currently stands, to a calendar year. On the playing front Queanbeyan has once again punched above our weight and I would like to congratulate all those who have represented us in Pennants, CSGA and State events and Club Open Days. It was pleasing to win two of the five CSGA Pennants this year and congratulations go to our Bruce Cup and Emily Hurt Shield teams. Our Holden Scramble winning team of Debra Benny, Joyce Hotchkis, Louise Smith and Chloe Thornton, along with our Club Professional Jake Nagle, finished second in the Australia-wide competition, a result we are very proud of. This year we have enjoyed strong playing fields on both Tuesdays and Saturdays and our total playing numbers have been the highest for some years. Our 2017 Open Day was a wonderful success with real excitement at the prospect of winning a Lennock Jaguar car for a hole-in-one. Unfortunately, nobody could win the prize, so we are hopeful of being able to repeat this again next year. Our thanks go to Wendy Lynch who organised this wonderful sponsorship for us and to those who worked hard on the day to put our Open Day on the map. Our Guest Day was played in good conditions and our thanks to Doyle Finance who provided the sponsorship for the day and to our willing helpers who enabled the smooth running of the event. It is a delight to see the progress of the women who have come into membership through our Beginner Ladies program and I would like to extend our thanks to Pauline Jeffery and Pam Sassella, along with their band of helpers, who have given of their time and expertise to provide an avenue for many to learn this enjoyable game. This year the women, under the leadership of Sue Korth, have agreed to take responsibility for the maintenance of several of the gardens around the course. Thank you to those who have given of their time and effort and provided plants to beautify these gardens it has certainly made a difference, but of course it s an on-going work. Queanbeyan Golf Club ABN

10 In closing I would like to thank the Club Manager, office, bar and kitchen staff for their support of the women members. Our Club Professional Jake Nagle and his staff have been of immense assistance to us and we appreciate their friendliness and expertise. I have felt privileged to be your President for this year. Linley Huish COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS REPORT The past 12 months has delivered a very different challenge to the previous year. From record rain last year to record dry periods this year. Each season provides us with differing and often inconsistent conditions. The result has been pleasing and comforting seeing members playing week in week out irrespective of the conditions. Earlier this year the Club continued with the TORO machinery lease and upgraded the fleet of course equipment. The leases are over a 5-year period and we will have the option to consider upgrades after that time. However, it is expected that the machinery will have a longer effective lifespan than 5 years and therefore the club should be in a position to evaluate alternative uses for the available cashflow at the time. Additionally, recently a new greens roller was added to the fleet. Its use provided an instant better playing surface. 18 man hours were spent on greens grooming, cutting and rolling before the last Wednesday comp in October producing favourable comments and excellent results. Our greenstaff has remained intact for 12 months. Mark has completed his 2nd apprenticeship year. Jamie is now 100% fit after surgery earlier in the year. All staff have worked tirelessly over the last year and thank them for their ongoing support, effort and dedication to the Club. The irrigation system has through the generosity of Pambula-Merimbula Golf Club (they have installed a new system) been modified extensively by acquiring and installing many $s worth of components. The front 9 system components are obsolete, so finding replacement parts is difficult and expensive. Yet to be completed are replacing all greenside sprinklers, allowing consistent and uniformity in watering. The problem greens and areas of concern where sprinklers have been replaced or relocated have benefitted greatly. Manual watering is still required each evening we irrigate involving about 4 hours work in achieving a full water. Eliminating this factor would dramatically reduce the additional workload currently required by our staff. Continued thanks to the working bee girls and boys and Leigh Blyton, who regularly spends many hours cutting rough amongst other tasks. The Pro-Am was another huge success. Our course remains a tough test of golf as the winning scores suggest. The ACT Senior Amateur held in November attracts the best senior golfers from all over Australia and enjoy the challenge our club provides. With sadness I reflect on the passing of our late Club President Wal Harrison. Wal s passion for our Club was inspirational in its continued success. It s through Wal s generosity and his love of the Club that the Club is still here today, and all members should be grateful of his enormous contribution in varying ways for many years. The path on the 17th to 18th is in honour of Wal and thankyou to all those people responsible for their generosity in constructing the path. I would like to thank you the members for your input, the Board and committees for their support and wish all of you a continued happy and enjoyable year ahead at Queanbeyan Golf Club. 11 PRO SHOP ANNUAL REPORT Well we ve reached the end of what seemed like a very quick year, and once again, it seems our club is continually on the way up. From what we have seen and heard through the Pro Shop, this is due to a few factors: A) Superintendent Bryan Kelly and his team of Jimmy Maher, Richard Egan, Jamie Green and Mark Flanagan have worked extremely hard to get the course to tournament standard, even with the bird damage we seem to be seeing every year over winter. B) Peter and Victor in the Bread and Putter Bistro have brought plenty of new customers through the clubhouse, and word is getting out about the great value for money and quality of food being served (and the extravagant sizes of most of the meals!!!) C) Radio advertising once again has put the word out there that we do have a golf course in Queanbeyan, and it is a terrific course to come and play. Our GM, David Doyle, put in countless hours this year to get the fire insurance claim across the line and managed to get a better than expected result. Any job at a Golf Course is a tough job, but David has shown he is very passionate about our Golf Club, and is happy to make the tough calls to keep us on the rise. Jodie and Shiona are now a duo team in the office, and to have a couple of smiling faces greeting members and guests is great to see every week, and I m sure many of our members have needed their help at some stage throughout the year. It s great to see our new board, headed by new President Adrian Coles, get on the front foot and come up with new ideas. I wish them all the best, and am sure they will hold the club in good stead over the next year. As always, both our Men and Women s Match Committees have tried to listen to all suggestions from members, and made plenty of changes to our events over the year. Please remember they volunteer their time to help the club, and sometimes cannot please everyone. I say this every year, but I m very thankful to our members for all of their support. We are always looking at new equipment and brands, as well as events for you all to enjoy. If you have any suggestions or ideas on how you think we could make your experience better, please let us know! To my boys in the shop, Trent, Lachlan, Jacko and new member Harry Smith. I know I can be a slave driver sometimes, and probably come down on you all way to hard when I ve lost a putting comp to Mat, but I appreciate all your help throughout the year. To have a group of young gentlemen who are happy to work weekends is rare these days, so I m glad to have you with us. Once again, a big thanks to Mat for his help over the year, it s great to see him giving members plenty of lessons, plus a few chipping comps and putting comps here and there. The Junior clinic has been a terrific success, plus Mat played a large role in the success of our Junior Pennant team this year. He is always happy to give a helping hand to members, and if you re looking for some parenting or cooking tips, he is your man! On a final note, I d just like to send our regards to the Harrison family. Wal Harrison was an instrumental member of our club, and as a President put in more hours than anyone should, and I never once heard him ask for a thank you. Wal was extremely supportive of Mat and myself in the Pro Shop and made me feel very comfortable when I first took on the Head Golf Professional position. I know he will be sorely missed around the club. Queanbeyan Golf Club ABN
