1 SEPTEMBER enews 2018 Dear {FIRSTNAME} FROM THE PRESIDENT On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to welcome Will and his wife Crystal, our new contract caterers. Po-Loy Restaurant will take over on Monday 3rd September They will also be our Bar contractors from early October Will s experience within the Club industry extends beyond 16 years; he and his family are currently involved with Batemans Bay Soldiers Club and Nowra Bowling Club trading as Gold Po-Loy, and with Coleambally Bowling Cub trading as House Kitchen. They are both looking forward to the challenges of a new business and meeting our members and visitors. The menus will be available as soon as possible on our website and in the Clubhouse; it will be a combination of Asian and Australian cuisines. The Board looks forward to a long and happy association with the Po-Loy family. I m pleased to announce that Geoff Uren (see below) has joined the PMGC Board. There are still two vacant positions on the Board, and I again request that any interested members talk to me or to other Board members for further information. David Boag Club President NEW DIRECTOR GEOFF UREN
2 Geoff Uren is our newest Director. Geoff was born in Melbourne but raised in Canberra. He joined the Royal Australian Navy and spent 38 years serving in a variety of managerial roles from Commanding ships to overseas diplomatic work. Although retired, he remains an active member of the Navy Reserve and is occasionally called back for short-term duty. Geoff and his wife Donna have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Both are keen sports followers with their main interests being playing very bad golf (his words - ed.) and the Collingwood Football Club. IN THE CLUBHOUSE Stephen James has some great wines to take away, at very special prices by the bottle or even better in a six pack. Prices are listed on the whiteboard at the main bar - be quick before they all go. There are also some new wines available from the Bar. Congratulations to Ben Dorling, winner of the $100 barrel draw on 12 August Next draw is Sunday 23 September. To enter collect your ticket from the Bar or Bistro and put it in the barrel near the Bar. FROM THE CLUB CAPTAIN Even though we ve being hampered by typical August winds, the number of comp players has held up well - no boom but very consistent. Likewise, green fees have been above expectations and many visitors express amazement at the facility we take for granted. I had the pleasure of playing with Kerry O Keeffe on his recent visit and am sure we will gain some good publicity from Kerry. He simply couldn t believe a country course could be up to the standard of PMGC. The final of the 4 Ball Best Ball was decided last week when John Cameron and Rudi Kraxner proved too steady for Pete Svedrupsen and Mick Mamone. Thank you to all who took part to make the event worthwhile conducting. Whilst on Match play, the Singles draw is out so please line up your first-round opponent and get things cracking as we are now running into the spring when the District golfing calendar is a little busier. It is less than two months until the annual Sapphire Coast Week of Golf (SCWOG) so please get your entries in early and talk a few mates into coming along. It s a great week so be part of the frivolities and play some decent golf into the bargain. We truly have a great group of volunteers assisting Pat and his team, but if you have all your work done at home I am sure we can find something for you to do to keep you out of mischief. Friday September 14th we will be hosting the Mollymook Veterans on their annual visit. We need as many players as possible to play with/against these folk, so please express your interest with Glenn in the Pro shop if you are available. Paul Welsford Club Captain GOLF Link Access Members are advised that from the 4th September 2018 all golfers who currently access GOLF Link will need to register and log-in to view handicaps and handicap histories on the Golf Australia (GA) website. This will be a once only process, taking only a few minutes. There will be an option to remain continually logged-in on the same device to avoid having to
3 enter your password every time you start a new viewing session. To register, there will be a requirement to provide an address to GA. This will be used to communicate important information and updates to players but there will be an option to opt out to receiving any commercial marketing. GA s policy on data protection can be viewed at The new log-in process will only apply to players who use the GA website to access their handicap information. Nothing will change for members who currently access this information at the Club. Further information can be viewed on the GA website FROM THE LADIES CAPTAIN Our monthly medal winner for August was Kath Chenery with 69 net well down Kath. Kath is pictured below(left) with Chris McMullen. Please note that the play off for the WGNSW Medal will be in Coolamatong not Mollymook as reported in last month s E News. The Four Ball Match Play is well under way with some very tight matches. Good luck in getting to the finals on the 18th September. The Bega Open was held on the 4th and 5th of August. PMGC was well represented with some excellent results. On Saturday Kate Walker and Cheryl Ramsay were Scratch R/Up in the 4 Ball. and on Sunday Lynda Jolly won Division 1 Net, Cheryl Ramsay was Division 1 Net R/Up and Anne Lavender was Division 2 Net winner. Congratulations and thanks to all the ladies who competed and to Bega for the lovely afternoon tea! On Thursday the 16th August we held the second round of our annual Tura/Pambula Merimbula Challenge event. Tura won the first round at Tura by 44 points and the second round was won by PMGC at home. But as Tura s lead was so big after the first round, we went down overall by 25 points. Next year ladies we will have another attempt! Entries are now being taken for our Foursomes Championships over 27 holes, so get yourselves a partner and enter. We would love to see a big field. Four of our Ladies will be contesting the Country District Finals in the 2018 Keno Women s NSW Four Ball Championship at Mollymook on the 14th September They are Elizabeth McErlain, Carlene Ramsay, Anne Pointon and Carol Drucza. Congratulations to these ladies and all the best. The next step is Bonville on the North Coast! Our AGM will be held on the 4th September and I urge you all to attend to show your support for your fellow Lady members who give up their time to run the Ladies comps etc. each week. I would like to thank my Match Committee and the General Committee for their support over the last 2 years and thank all the lady members for helping whenever asked; it made my job
4 that little bit easier. Good golfing! Pat Went Ladies Captain ON THE COURSE Bunker Upgrade Project The first stage of the Bunker Upgrade Project (BUP) involving incorporation of much improved drainage, raising the bunker surface, re-shaping the bunker surrounds and laying turf across the surface of the small bunker at the 13th hole was completed during August. The turf will grow once the ground temperature increases and we have some rain. However, until the turf is established the bunker will remain as GUR. Two additional BUP stages will include the upgrade of 13 additional fairway, practice and greenside bunkers - with 4 becoming grassed bunkers and the other 9 re-modelled sand bunkers. This work is planned to begin immediately after the SCWOG and Men s Open which concludes in October Subject to good weather, we expect to have the BUP work completed by mid-december Practice Nets The 3 netted practice bays adjacent to the 1st tee are exactly 4 years old and the netting had become very worn with integral holes larger than a golf ball! The nets had to be replaced as a matter of priority and Pat Wilson, several members of the course ground staff and volunteer Ian Murray completed a timely re-stringing of the practice nets in mid-august. The practice nets are now in pristine condition again and ready for the SCWOG and Men s Open. Clubhouse Gardens The Club s Gardening Group led by Noel and Maureen McArdle has made an impressive contribution to PMGC in keeping the gardens around the club looking attractive and well-groomed. Their efforts are greatly appreciated by all club members and our visitors too. However, the long-serving members of the group are getting a little older and unfortunately there have been fewer and fewer new volunteer gardening members available to the group during recent years. The task of keeping the club s gardens up to the group s high standards has therefore become much more of a challenge. We have decided to minimise the high maintenance gardens located close to the clubhouse and this will involve removing the older, larger and more woody plants and shrubs and replacing them with natives requiring less maintenance. To achieve this aim, the areas where plants and shrubs will be removed will have a covering of wood chips laid down and this action is planned to take place during the next few weeks and prior to the SCWOG. Later and most probably starting in July 2019, several garden areas will be made smaller with turf and appropriate native plants and grasses introduced as necessary. Priorities have been allocated to garden areas where work will begin as soon as 31 August These include alongside the SW side of the club house near the cellar door, between the Garden Room and sand bucket stand at the 10th tee, the plant bed beside the steps at the 10th tee, the area on the right-hand side of the 10th tee near the large tree with lights and the garden to the right hand side of the 1st tee.
