1 The Flagstick Ancil Hoffman Golf Club ~ Carmichael, California April 2009 President s Message Ivory Rubin ~ AHGC President Inside this issue: President s Message 1 Is golf just a game -- a sporting activity that brings us together with other men and women for four hours of skilled, and unskilled, endeavor? Some, such as I, believe that golf is a bit more than that. It is an activity that is a reflection of growth and maturation. It embodies these values of life...consideration, determination, education, honesty, perseverance and respect. Presenting ourselves as "golfers" carries the same tribulations and struggles that come with developing into a good person. It is harder than we want, it takes longer than we want, and it takes more out of us than we think it should. Just as we have hopefully become the fathers, mothers, men and women that we ultimately aspired to be, so shall we become the golfers that we want to be, embodying the values of golf as prescribed by our mentors and the legends of the game. In life as in golf, how we present ourselves teaches the hard lessons that we have learned to those who come after us, just as we have learned from our mentors and parents. They showed us, in those endeavors, that we could become better than we ever thought we could. Our dreams got bigger because we were taught that it was possible. That legacy lives on in each of us; and in every person we touch; we should also instill the same enduring values and the same boundless possibilities that we ourselves were taught about life and golf. Golfers, more so than "those who play golf", are a fraternity of considerate, determined, educated, honest, moral, and respectful individuals; so, let's be committed to demonstrating those values at each and every encounter on and off the golf course. Our parents, mentors, and the legends of the game will be proud!! 3 The Flagstick~ April 2009 Page 3 Midweek Tournament News Danny Gore & Myril Hoag Midweek Tournament Co-Chairs Weekend Tournament News Matt Gilchrist Weekend Tournament Chair Greetings to all Midweek players! Greetings to all Weekend Players Our Ancil Hoffman Thursday tournaments for the first quarter have averaged 110 players, slightly ahead of last year even with the spotty weather. We continue to spread the wealth with flight prizes, 61 different winners out of a total of 76 awards. Every score under par (red number) was a winner, and red scores only comprised 44% of all rounds placed for a prize. The lesson here is to pay attention out there on the course, concentrate and play every hole as well as you can, because a couple of trouble holes won t knock you out of contention. Leading money winners so far in Midweek tournaments include Jeff Hart ($170), John Taylor ($165), Terry O Callaghan, Tom Bauser, and Al Ruth, to name a few. Our next tournament is the Skins Game, where almost everyone will win something, with the added pleasure of winning at the expense of your buddies in the foursome. Remember it is almost never too late to enter a midweek event. Just contact the tournament director and we ll find a spot for you. The annual Member/Guest this year will be an Individual Stroke event. A member may bring multiple guests, flights will be separate for Ancil members and for guests and we will provide a lunch and beverage, as was the practice in previous years. Please mark your calendars for these upcoming tournaments. There are some schedule changes that were made for conflicts at Ancil and elsewhere. The first of these is shifting the Senior Two Person Qualifier to May 28, with the Individual Stroke going to May 7, due to an NCGA Senior Net Qualifier being played on May 7. The date for the July event will be the 9 th instead of the 16 th. The format for the September tournament will now be a team event with a postable round. Finally, the Wayne Parcells Senior Net dates are now October 8 and 22. The updated schedule will always be available in the posting room in the Ancil restaurant. Please remember that the Senior Four-Ball Net Championship qualifier and the NCGA Net Amateur the following month in June require a minimum of two postable rounds in AHGC tournaments within the prior twelve-month period. Spring has sprung and our course is getting into great shape. Despite threatening skies, we dodged the rain and had a great turnout for our March 21/22 Best Ball NCGA qualifier. Congratulations to Eric Engman, Erik Smith, Clyde Vickers, and Greg Rousseve who will be traveling to Poppy Hills and Bayonet golf courses on the Monterey peninsula May 13 th and 14 th to represent Ancil Hoffman Golf Club in the Northern California Golf Association Sacramento Zone Championship. Tournament participation remains strong through the first three events of the year and I know we all enjoy the larger fields. Keep it up! The following tournaments are coming up for the second quarter: April 19 (Sunday) Two-man Best Ball ($20/player) + NCGA 4-Ball Qualifier ($10 per team) May 16 Individual Stroke ($20/player) June 6/7 President s Cup ($25/player)* must have played in 2 Ancil Hoffman stroke events in prior 12 months to qualify Anyone interested in running a skins game during stroke event tournaments, please let me know. Thanks, Matt Gilchrist Weekend Tournament Director Danny Gore and Myril Hoag Midweek Tournament Directors

6 Page 6 The Flagstick~ April 2009 Money Matters, from the Treasurer Gary Younglove From the Handicapper Frank Semans We are three months into 2009 and it doesn t appear that our membership numbers will meet this year s projections. All club expenditures are budgeted on our best guesstimate of where the club s membership count will end up. Up until last year we consistently had over 1,000 active members. Last year we ended up with less than 900 and this year we will be lucky to get to 750. It seems the federal government should be using AHGC membership totals as a leading economic indicator. It looks like your Board will again consider some cost cutting measures to reduce our budgeted expenses Despite the economic doom and gloom, I am proud to acknowledge our AHGC members who generously donated over $500 this year to the NCGA Foundation. The foundation provides deserving youth the opportunity to develop life skills and values through golf. Our contributing members were: John Baker Michael Phillips George Beach John Quattrin Tony Carter Rudolph Ramseth Karel Cottrell James Ray James DeFerrari Joseph Smith William George Michael Smith Eric A. Golden Brian Thomas Kristoffer Hall John Thomas Dave Hosford Mark White Don Markham Stuart Wilson Robert Merritt David Young Terry O Callaghan Walter Zacharias Larry O Connor Kenny Perry received a stroke penalty when his ball moved after he addressed it in a recent PGA tournament on TV. The following rule of golf was broken: Rule 18-2.b. Ball Moving After Address If a player s ball in play moves after he has addressed it (other than as a result of a stroke), the player is deemed to have moved the ball and incurs a penalty of one stroke. The ball must be replaced unless the movement of the ball occurs after the player has begun the stroke or backward movement of the club for the stroke and the stroke is made. Some definitions and clarifications: 1. A player has addressed the ball when he has taken his stance and has also grounded his club, except that in a hazard a player has addressed the ball when he has taken his stance. 2. A ball is deemed to have moved if it leaves its position and comes to rest in any other place. 3. In addressing the ball, a player accidentally causes the ball to oscillate, but it returns to its original position. The ball has not moved and there is no penalty. Question: A player s routine prior to playing a stroke is as follows: He first grounds the club directly behind the ball with his feet together. Then he gradually widens his feet to shoulder width. At that point he makes the stroke. If the ball moves after he grounds the club but before he widens his stance to shoulder width, does he incur a penalty stroke under Rule 18-2.b? Answer: No. A player has not addressed the ball until he completes taking his stance, i.e., his feet are essentially in the position in which he normally places them when making a stroke. However, if the ball moved after the club was placed in position but before the player had completed taking his stance, he incurs a penalty stroke under Rule 18-2.a for having caused the ball to move and must replace the ball, unless there is strong evidence that wind or some other agency caused the ball to move. Rule 18-2.a is another story. Programs Director Greg Rousseve Come join us this month at the Ancil Hoffman Golf Club Quarterly Meeting and delicious free dinner. Our special guest speaker will be Rod Metzler, president of Empire Golf, which operates Ancil Hoffman, Cherry Island, Dark Horse, La Contenta, and Oakmont golf courses. Throughout his 35-year career, beginning as an Assistant Golf Pro, Rod has been an active and influential member of the golfing community and industry. In 2008, the Sacramento Bee named Rod as one of the twenty-five most influential people in Sacramento golf. Rod will speak on the state of golf in Sacramento in 2009 and beyond. Rod is sure to have an insider's knowledge and take on where golf is and where it is going in Sacramento. Don't miss this opportunity to hear from a real golf insider. The AHGC Quarterly Meeting is Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at the Ancil Hoffman restaurant. Sign in and raffle ticket sales begin at 6:00 p.m. Dinner is at 7:00 p.m. and is free to all club members and guests. The Quarterly meeting and raffle drawing begins at 7:30 p.m

7 Page 7 The Flagstick~ April 2009 From the Superintendent Greg Bliek The grass is growing and we are getting into another season at Ancil Hoffman. We continue to work on our new forward and back tee project. I hope to have all the forward tees ready for play this summer and the plan is to have them rated by the NCGA and PWGA before they open. We are also focusing a lot of our efforts on an irrigation project in which all the existing irrigation control boxes will be changed to a new wireless system that can be controlled by a central computerized program. This will give us flow and pressure control to make sure the pump runs efficiently and the sprinkler heads have the most pressure available. It should improve conditions as we hope to be able to water the whole golf course every night. I will update you as we move through this project. The greens aerification project went very well this spring. We double verti-cut the greens before aerifying them with a smaller solid tine. We punch more holes and use just about as much sand but without pulling a plug and having a longer recover time. At the two week mark the greens should be rolling relatively true again. The greens were fertilized and over seeded. We also punched the collars and over seeded them as well. The largest percent of our effort always goes to the entire green surround in an effort to improve the quality of turf in those areas. As you all know most of the shots are taken around the green. We are trying to improve the quality in these areas by spraying out weeds, adding more fertilizer, over seeding, verti-cutting, top-dressing, and lowering cutting heights on and around the green all to encourage a denser healthy stand of turf. Quality should progressively get better as these activities continue. Thanks for your support and we ll see you out there. 8 Page 8 The Flagstick~ April 2009 Lessons in Humor and Golf Sweep Before You Reap How you make a practice swing when chipping from off the green is especially critical. First of all, you re not just trying to calculate how far you need to hit the ball, you re also trying to determine how high the ball should fly and how much roll you want it to have. Also, a practice stroke helps you to assess the lie, which can range from having a ball that s sunken down in the rough to one sitting high on the collar. All these variables come into play when making a practice swing, which is why I think it s critical that every golfer learn my rehearsal technique before hitting a chip or pitch shot. To begin this shot rehearsal, first inspect the lie as best you can. Note if the ball has grass above, below or to the sides. The higher the ball sits up, the more backspin you ll impart on the ball, and the higher and farther it will carry. The lower it sits, the more grass that will come between the ball and clubface, causing the ball to both fly lower and with more forward spin once it hits the ground. After assessing the lie, determine how the grass will react to a downward sweeping motion through the ball. In this case, make two practice strokes, both by sweeping down through the grass. Do this as close to the ball as possible (without hitting it), and get a feel for whether the grass is catching the clubhead or if the grass allows the clubhead to slide through easily. If it s grabbing the face, you ll need a firmer grip for more steadiness and a slightly more downward angle of attack to prevent a flubbed shot. If the grass is loose, then a softer, more delicate grip will help you make a smooth stroke through the ball. Finally, two practice sweeps will help you feel whether or not your ball sits on some sort of incline or side hill, since some greenside lies aren t as obvious as they look. Hitting successful chips and pitches always requires you to make a downward stroke into the ball, so try and avoid any scooping or lifting of the ball. That kind of shot rarely pans out! These two sweeps, although seemingly simple, should be rehearsed before every chip or pitch shot to ensure you have as much information as possible about the kind of lie you have to contend with. This will also make a big difference in your ability to successfully get up and down from anywhere around the green. Do this little rehearsal, and you ll start seeing better results with your pitches and chips around the green. Want to learn some more quick tips to help your game? Check out the all new for several short game tips that are sure to help you lower your score! Barry Goldstein is a professional golf teacher at Inverrary CC in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Hear Your Chips I m sure you re familiar with the famous Sam Snead tip, Hear your putts. To ensure that he didn t come out of his putts too early, the Slammer held fast in his putting posture until he hopefully heard the ball rattle the bottom of the cup.
