1 The Flagstick Ancil Hoffman Golf Club ~ Carmichael, California October, 2011 President s Message Rick Price ~ AHGC President Inside this issue: President s Message 1 This will be the last time I address the membership within the Flagstick as the President. It has been two years since I agreed to come back to the Board, with the idea that I would commit two years, and then step down. I had previously served a few years ago as the Weekend Tournament Director. It has been a pleasure serving on the Board and has given me the opportunity to meet a large amount of the over 700 members which belong to one of the largest Cubs in America. In July, Greg Hovious and I stepped in with about a fifteen hour notice that we would be running the weekend tournaments. Matt Gilchrist had to step down suddenly to take care of his family. I thanked Matt for his over four years of service to the Club, and told him his family should come first. When I ran tournaments, I never did post closest to the pin or skins. Sorry if your name didn t get on the web, but congratulations on the balls or money. Since then, Danny Gore has been taking the lead on the weekends, and will continue to do so until Mike Ong takes over the duties. Please be patient as the Board transitions over the next few months. I appreciate the support and good thoughts over the last few years from the members, and expect that things within the Club will continue to flourish with the incoming Board. Please remember that these are voluntary positions which require time, donated by the individuals, to make sure that the Club continues to provide crucial services to the members, such as mid-week and weekend tournaments, handicap services, quarterly meetings and dinners, and entry into NCGA tournaments. As mentioned before, with over 700 members, there are plenty of different personalities to come across, some of them real gems. It has been a great pleasure getting to know more of you, but as of December 1, 2011, feel free to call your new incoming President, Greg Hovious, not me, unless of course you re looking for a fourth to play golf with. Again, my many thanks. 3 The Flagstick~ October 2011 Page 3 Midweek Tournament News Danny Gore Midweek Tournament Chair Hello to Ancil Hoffman Golf Club Midweek golfers. We ve closed out the summer of tournament events, wonderful cool days (for Sacramento) - perfect weather for golf. We had four diverse events; two team outings, one individual, and one individual stroke with guests welcome. We were able to attract more than thirty guests for the July tournament, many of whom indicated they would like to join our club. I would encourage our players in the guest events to make an effort to bring a potential member out to experience competitive golf. Looking at winners from this period, Ray Cheung finished on top with $285 in pro shop lucre. Ray has been practicing he only gets beat at golf by his son these days. Second in winnings was Dave Watts with $225, then Brett Dodge (not a misprint) with $200, Greg Stein at $180, and finally Gary Guinn and Jerry Martin with $175. Looks like Christmas money for these guys and the more than two dozen others that amassed over $100 for the quarter. The next Midweek tournament is on October 13, an event with guests with GHIN welcome to play with us plenty of time to snag a friend to come play golf. One week later on October 20 will feature the Wayne Parsell Senior Net Championship. This event will offer additional prize fund payout to the players 55 years of age and better, and a chance to etch your name and grace the Wayne Parsell trophy for Senior honors on display in the meeting room in the restaurant. On November 3 we have a director s choice tournament; choice meaning we will decide the format according to conditions on the course. Wet and soggy will be a scramble as last year, fast and firm will provide for a Tournament posting format. Then in December we will offer the second Skins Game tournament of the year, where each group fights for a pot of money. With the external skins game available, we have a big day of skins play. As always, please contact the weekday tournament director, Danny Gore, at smddcg@rcsis.com ( is preferable) for any questions or requests. Phone (916) if necessary. Late entries can almost always be accommodated, but timely online entry and submission of entry fee is a great help to facilitate the tournament administration. Mark your calendars, come out and have a good time with the weekday tournament players. See ya on the course Weekend Tournament News Danny Gore Acting Weekend Tournament Chair Greetings to the Ancil Hoffman Golf Club Weekend golfers. We ve had quite a ride for the summer quarter members need a program for revolving tournament directors. Mega thanks go to Rick Price and Greg Hovious for stepping up to the plate for emergency service at the July event, a big effort saved the day. The weekday guy has been filling in since then and will continue to do so for the near future. The 2012 weekend tournament director-elect, Mike Ong (applause), will be brought on board and will share weekend duties in November and December - we anticipate a smooth, seamless transition for the club. The dual weekend Club Championship just concluded. Congratulations to the new Ancil Hoffman Club Champion, the estimable, gregarious Chris Johnson. Chris defeated four quality opponents in the championship; the final being Mark Gale, 4 & 3 in the 36 hole closing match. Our champion scored a tidy $500 in pro shop credits for his efforts, with $250 to console Mark for runner-up honors. The Net Flight winners, a who s who of bagger, or net, Ancil golfers, were each awarded $250. They were President s Flight - David Ball; Vice-President s Flight - Chris Jones; Treasurer s Flight - Paul Lukkarila; and Secretary s Flight - Al Matej. Congratulations to all the match play competitors for their sportsmanship and exciting one-onone golf. Counting the payout for the Club Championship event, thirty or more players accumulated at least $120 in tournament winnings for the period. On the schedule, our next Weekend tournament is Sunday, October 23, and features a modified Stableford format. Net scores are translated to points and the highest score wins with this game. Next, on November 12 we will offer an, and finally in December a four person team event, the Cha Cha Cha will be played. The remaining events will offer skins games and closest to the pin contests when the format permits. Please contact Danny Gore, at smddcg@rcsis.com ( is preferable) or phone (916) , for any questions or requests for the next event; be aware the contact person may change in subsequent tournaments. Late entries can almost always be accommodated, but timely online entry and submission of entry fee is a great help to facilitate the tournament administration. We thank the weekend tournament players for their patience and patronage, and look forward to some fun golf for the rest of the year.

6 Page 6 The Flagstick~ October 2011 Money Matters, from the Treasurer Gary Younglove Lessons Learned I wrote a similar article 2 years ago, but it bears repeating. During my tenure as AHGC Treasurer I ve learned the following; 1. Although the Pro Shop still refers to our club as the Men s Club, it is not. It is the Ancil Hoffman Golf Club. 2. We have a number of ladies on our club s roster and Liz Reedman will be joining our Board of Directors in Our club s budget year runs from January 1 through December More than 99% of the club s income is derived from membership dues. 5. Our remaining income comes from our bank account s interest. 6. Approximately 2/3 of our dues income is received during the membership renewal period (October through mid December). In other words, most of our 2011 income was received before the 2011 fiscal year began in January. 7. Despite our decline in membership, AHGC remains one of the largest NCGA clubs. 8. The club subsidizes Midweek and Weekend Tournaments (prize funds and drink tickets) by an average of over $400 per tournament. 9. Sacramento County (through the Pro Shop) contributes an additional 10% to tournament cashers and quarterly meeting raffle winners. 10. The club awards $100 to AHGC members who make a hole-inone in a club event, with Empire Golf contributing a matching $100. The $200 is added to the member s pro shop book account. 11. The club does not pay income tax, but the Treasurer is required to file annual informational returns with both the IRS and California Franchise Tax Board. 12. The club maintains non-profit status through the California Secretary of State. If you have friends interested in joining our golf club, now is the time to do it. The new member fee is $86 whether they join now or wait until By joining now they will be able to participate in Midweek and/or Weekend Tournaments for the remainder of this year as well as next. Remember you have until mid- December to renew your membership for $76. From the Handicapper Rod Bottel The T-Score Reduction Process (or the dreaded R ) The handicapping system, nationwide, had an automatic process that looks at your tournament scores for the last 12 months and your normal last 20 scores and will make a downward adjustment to your index if you have a significant difference. That is when you will see an R next to your index. This process is triggered if you have two (2) T scores in the past 12 months that are three (3) strokes or better than your normally computed index. The odds of shooting 3 strokes one time better than your index are 43/1 for a index. (Source NCGA Odds Table). For a lower index the odds are worse and for a high index, as you might suspect, the odds are better. Variables other the 3 stroke difference in this reduction process are the number of tournament scores and, of course, your current index. With this in mind I did a comparison of our internal Tournament Indexes (TI) to the NCGA indexes using Sept data. Out of 415 individuals that are both active in the club and had tournament scores (remember we keep these for 2 years): 95% of the TI s were 3 or less than the respective NCGA indexes only 21 out of 415 were higher than 3 strokes. In more than 50% the TI s were worse than NCGA!

7 Page 7 The Flagstick~ October 2011 From the Superintendent Greg Bliek Aerification season is here. The greens are complete as well as collars, approaches and tees. Fairways 1-11 were Vert-cut in the same week, the rest in the week to come. With seed and fertilizer these areas will be in tip top shape soon and ready for winter. The new green for #14 is making a quick turn around and continues to get better by the day as long as we continue to introduce air into the drainage system. New drain parts will be installed to provide venting for future protection. I think the new hole will be ready to re-open in couple months. I have arranged to begin construction on a new tee for #14 in October. It will be elevated, re-aligned, and have new irrigation installed. Part of the existing tee will still be open for play until the new tee is ready. Please continue to support this wonderful golf course so we can keep fixing it up! See you out there! From The Programs Director Greg Rousseve AHGC Quarterly Meeting & Free Dinner The October Quarterly meeting will be held in the Main Event located in the AHGC restaurant. Our quarterly meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 26, Sign in and raffle ticket sales begin at 5:30 p.m. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m. and free to all club members and guests. The meeting and raffle drawing begins at 7:00 p.m. The main item on the agenda will be the election of officers for AHGC Board for the 2012 golf year. 8 Page 8 The Flagstick~ October 2011 Lessons in Humor and Golf The Putt-Chip Shot "Putt" your chips to get up and down By Jon Paupore, PGA The putt-chip is a shot that I encourage all of my students to learn at our golf school. It's easy, it's reliable, and even the pros use it to get up and down in a hurry. By keeping the ball low, you eliminate the need to worry about how much carry you need or how much the ball will spin. Instead, you can focus on distance and direction, two keys to hitting better shots. This shot uses the same setup as most short-game shots, starting with a good golf posture and 60 percent of your weight on your left foot. The difference from a putt is that you need to use a short iron, perhaps a 7- or 8-iron, and you'll use your normal. putting grip instead of your full swing grip. This automatically takes some of the wrist action out of the shot. With the ball positioned at about the middle of your stance, choke down on the club so that your iron feels about the same length as that of a putter. From this position, you might even see the heel of the club off the ground. This is a good thing because it helps prevent the leading edge from digging into the ground. Now you're ready to use your normal putting stroke by dominating the motion with your shoulders rocking up and down and letting your arms, not your wrists, control the clubhead. You should see the ball come off with little trajectory, hit the green and start rolling like a putt. Now with some practice, allow the length of your swing to dictate how far the ball travels. In no time, you'll be saving more pars with this simple, easy-to-learn shot!
