When the magazine was first published in 1989, Dennis Bruyns, Dale Hayes and the rest of the clan decided that they needed to show respect for the remarkable history and heritage of the game of golf that dates back some 600 years. The spelling compleat is an archaic form of the word complete and is defined as: Of or characterised by a highly developed or wide-ranging skill or proficiency; Being an outstanding example of a kind; Quintessential. And so, taking their lead from a classic text for fishermen titled The Compleat Angler, written by Izaak Walton in 1653, the Compleat Golfer magazine was born. All rights reserved. THE THIN LINE BETWEEN LOVE AND HATE THE ED HAS DECIDED TO FORGIVE ONE OF EUROPE S RYDER CUP HEROES FOR AN INSULT HE HAS NO IDEA HE COMMITTED. W hat is it about human nature that makes us enjoy seeing sports stars fail? We pick and choose our favourite golfers and those who we dislike despite having no direct connection to the individual, and rejoice in their successes or failures. For example, there are a lot of golf fans who took great delight in Tiger s fall from grace or in Ian Poulter s lack of Major success. For me, the player whose failures I have openly celebrated is Jamie Donaldson. It all stems from a petty incident back in the 2008 Mauritius Open although I m certain he has no recollection of the episode whatsoever. The Welshman, no more than a journeyman at that stage, was ranked 251st in the world with only a pair of Challenge Tour wins to his name. Yet as one of the top-ranked players in the field, he took his favourite tag seriously. As the tournament neared its conclusion, Donaldson was involved in a tight battle with Gregory Havret for the title and as he was lining up his approach to the 13th, a short par five with a narrow entrance to the green, something caught his eye and halted his pre-shot routine: me. Visibly agitated, the Welshman elected to publicly berate me, uttering something that sounded suspiciously similar to, Will you duck off out of the way! Now, you have to understand that, at this point in time, Mauritius was fairly new to tournament golf and many spectators were ignorantly crossing fairways, fidgeting while players hit their shots and even answering phone calls on the course. I, however, incurred the wrath of Donaldson by lining up a photo of the would-be champ from about 25 metres away. Nevertheless, Jamie and I have been entangled in a nasty feud inside my head ever since. Every missed cut has been celebrated along with every failure to win. The problem is that while I ve been silently anticipating his downfall, Donaldson has gone from strength to strength since that fateful afternoon. He s won three European Tour events, broken into the world s top 30 and has more money than he knows what to do with. More recently, he played a starring role in the Ryder Cup, winning the point that ultimately won Europe the cup. If I ve forgiven Donaldson, then which player will I oppose from now on? With so many candidates out there, it s a tough choice. This month we celebrate our 25th anniversary with a special issue where we look at some of the highlights from the past quarter century. While it feels great to pat ourselves on the back, we acknowledge that you, the reader, remain the most important person in the whole process. Just as Teams Europe and USA got the 40th Ryder Cup under way, the 54th South African Inter-Provincial entered its last day, with Central Gauteng and favourites Western Province battling it out for the spoils at Westlake Golf Club in Cape Town. Central Gauteng had provided the first upset four days earlier, beating Western Province on the opening day, and needed only to beat Boland on the final day to triumph overall. Western Province, on the other hand, needed to beat reigning champions Gauteng North and rely on their neighbours Boland to see off Central Gauteng. Province easily dispatched Gauteng North 9-3 on the final day, but once again had to settle for runners-up overall after Boland, who were still reeling from the 10-2 drubbing at the hands of Province the day before, succumbed to the youthful exuberance of the Central Gauteng team 7½-4½, giving the team from the north the title for a record 26th time. This is an incredible moment for the whole team, said victorious captain Louis Taylor. In my first SA IPT we came up just short, and last year we had to fight like demons to survive relegation. I think only the past winners of this tournament can understand the incredible pride we share as a team right now, he said later. This was a team effort all the way and everyone deserves to take credit. The victorious team consisted of Michael Dixon, Matthew Spacey, Darin de Smidt, Gareth Clements, Andi Dill, Louis Taylor and rookies Marco Steyn and David Meyers, who Taylor made special mention of in his speech afterwards. Eastern Province will replace Gauteng North next year in the top division after winning the B-division played on the same course. Rory McIlroy has shown yet again why he deserves to be recognised as the biggest name in golf currently, with the announcement that his Rory Foundation will host the 2015 Irish Open at his home course of Royal County Down. This means that, barring any sudden injury, McIlroy will definitely play in the event and he has even pledged to convince other top players from both the European and US Tours to join him. McIlroy spoke more about the announcement on Sky Sports on the Sunday before the Ryder Cup, saying, Since making my debut in 2005, the Irish Open has always been a special tournament to me. I am excited to be partnering with George O Grady and the European Tour, especially for next year s tournament at Royal County Down. European Tour chief executive O Grady was just as complimentary about the announcement and McIlroy s commitment to the tour. Since I first met Rory when he was playing for Europe in the 2004 Junior Ryder Cup team in Detroit, I could sense he was not just a remarkably talented golfer, but also a remarkable young man, he said. As the chief executive of the European Tour, it has been en a true pleasure watching Rory s transition from one of the world s leading amateur golfers in 2007 to the number one golfer in the world and a four-time Major champion. The Rory Foundation Irish Open will take place from May next year and the beneficiaries will be chosen by his foundation, which was set up last year to raise funds for children s charities globally, in conjunction with the European Tour.
