2 HELLO SPRING! With Spring in the air, both the Golf Department and course maintenance team have been hard at work preparing for an exciting summer. The new World Handicapping System has come into play with the introduction of both the slope and course rating. This will have an impact on both players handicaps and the course setup. Further details on the changes are placed below in the newsletter. The team from Golf Data have been working exceptionally hard over the winter months with several projects and improvements being completed. The more noticeable changes being the trimming of the trees and clearing of rough areas on both courses which has received a phenomenal response from the membership. The Spring treatment is well under way with the fairways and tees being scarified and hollow tined. Please do take note of the treatments which will be completed to the greens over the next two weeks. Our events calendar is filled with great events through to the end of the year and there is no excuse not to play, whether it be on Woodmead, Rocklands or The Mashie. Event details have been included in this issue however key events to diarise are the Ladies and Men Charity Days to be played in October and our friendly mixed challenges against Bryanston in the Plover Cup and Royal Johannesburg in the CCJ Putter. The Zebra cup is nearing and will be played on Heritage Day (24th September) in the afternoon. The Club has had a fantastic representation on both the local and international golfing scene. Our members have been flying the CCJ flag high with some great results in both mid-amateur and junior tournaments and our golf ambassadors continue to finish high up on the leader boards. We are extremely proud of these results and the current strength of the golf section. This is also evident in the performances on the league teams. We hope you are each as excited about the arrival of Spring as we are. Sunrise golf commences from Monday 3rd September and best you keep your ears to the ground as we will be launching our afternoon 9 hole competitions shortly. 4 Junior Golf 13-year-old Amilkar Bhana from Central Gauteng recently played in the CGGU North vs. South Trophy played on the Rocklands course on the 14th & 15th August With rounds of 70, 71, 70 Amilkar finished tied 6 on 5 under par. The 2018 Dimension Data Junior Open U-15 champ has also risen to third in the SAGA Under-15 rankings and broken into the top 30 in the under-17 age group. CGGU Junior Team Series - CNGU Quadrangular Always great to see CCJ Junior representing in Golf Union events. Well done to Simran Moodley who helped her team place second recently at Waterkloof GC. Other CCJ players representing the U15, U17 and U19 Teams were Amilkar Bhana & Andrew Long(U15) with Romain Legentil playing in the U19 s. Mid-Amateur Golf The Country Club Johannesburg would like to congratulate Wendell Bossenger and Norman Raad on being selected for the Central Gauteng Golf Union (CGGU) Mid-Amateur IPT Team. They will be representing CGGU at The Kimberley Golf Club from the 6th to the 13th October As defending Champions from last year, we would like to wish both players all the best. Congratulations again to Wendell Bossenger from The Country Club Johannesburg who won the KZN Mid-Am title at Durban Country Club. Wendell carded rounds of for a level par total that saw him in a play-off with another lion in Neil Homann from The Wanderers Golf Club. After both players made par on the 1st hole, Wendell managed to make birdie on the 18th hole, their second play-off hole to win the title CGGU Open Foursomes Well done to Wesley du Plessis and Angus Klintworth from The Country Club Johannesburg who won the 2018 CGGU / Randpark Open Foursomes. The pair carded rounds of 70 & 73 for a 143 gross total that was 4 shots clear of Richard Fulford and Gareth Clements.

5 GOLF ACADEMY The Club is proud to announce the appointment of new Head Teaching Professional, John Dickson. John will be taking over the reigns of the CCJ Golf Academy from October 1st. We are extremely excited to have him join the golf team as our Teaching Professional and believe his knowledge and enthusiasm will be a major benefit to all members. John has been teaching since 1995 and during this time he has been awarded PGA Teaching Professional of the year in 2007, 2012 & He was also recognised by Golf Digest and named one of the prominent teacher s outside of the USA in John has been head professional at Durban Country Club and Copperleaf Golf Estate. John s team will include AA PGA Professional Byron Nel, who s focus will be on junior golfers however has extensive knowledge of the golf swing and is capable of assisting all levels of golfers. Both John and Byron come with lots of new and refreshing ideas and we look forward to welcoming them to the Club come Monday 1st October.

6 HANDICAP New Course and Slope Ratings What influence does this have on your handicap? INTRODUCTION: On Monday 3rd September, there will be a change in the handicapping procedure which will see South Africa align themselves internationally through the World Handicap System and Slope Rating. The change will see handicaps recalculated through the new differential provided by each courses different slope and course rating. The changes in handicap calculations will be completed by the Handicap Network Africa Systems. WHAT IS SLOPE RATING? Slope Rating indicates the measurement of relative difficulty of a course from a scratch golfer to a high handicap. The tougher the course for a high handicapper the higher the slope rating. The slope rating is an important element in attaining a player s course handicap. Courses can be rated from 55 (easiest) to 155(toughest). A slope rating of 113 is seen as the average or standard course rating. WHAT IS A COURSE RATING? The course rating measures the difficulty of a course to a scratch golfer. The tougher the course for a scratch golfer the higher the rating. It is always expressed to one decimal point. HOW IS THE SLOPE AND COURSE RATING DETERMINED? The courses are rated on various aspects such as length, elevation changes, wind, altitude and obstacles such as bunkers, water and the difficulty of the green complexes. Two courses similar in length may be rated differently taking into consideration the following factors i.e. hazard positions and quick undulating greens. HANDICAP INDEX: All South African golfers will be provided with a HANDICAP INDEX on Monday, 3rd September. This handicap index (HI) will be calculated from the player best 10 differentials of his/her last 20 rounds multiplied by 96% and will be shown to one decimal point. The Handicap Network Africa (HNA) system will calculate the HI using the new slope and course rating for each course registered under each players profile. The HI is calculated using the following formula: (Adjusted Gross Score Course Rating) x 113/Course Slope. I.E. ( ) X 113/142 = 9.3 COURSE HANDICAP: A player will be allocated a course handicap which is dependent on the golf course and course markers they opt to play from. Each course will offer a different slope and course rating which will affect a players course handicap. WHAT COURSE AND COURSE HANDICAP DO I PLAY OFF? As of Monday 3rd September, we will no longer have gender based tees such as the seniors or ladies tees. Instead we will have courses. For example, the Yellow, White, Blue and Red course. Players may elect which course they would like to play dependent on their course handicap. The yellow course being for golfers with a lower course handicap whilst the white course is for your low to medium (4 15) course handicap golfers. The purpose of giving players the option of choosing which course to play will improve the level of enjoyment. For club competitions, players may be required to play from a specific course. The golf committees may elect a specific tee for both male and females to participate from during club competitions. Course handicaps will be obtained when players check-in, alternatively can be obtained from the HNA website, terminal or cell phone app. A course handicap conversion chart will also be made available for golfers. Course handicap is calculated using the following formula: Course Handicap = Handicap Index X slope rating / (CR-Par) I.E. 12.6(HI) x 144(Slope rating) / ( ) = Course Handicap is 16 Whilst registering for golf, players are to inform the check-in staff which course they have selected to play from. The staff member will then input this information into the system which will calculate each player s course handicap. The course handicap will be printed on the green fee slip for players to view. If the golf check-in computers are offline, players may use the Handicap Network Africa (NHA) website, terminal or application to determine their course handicap. A course handicap conversion table will also be provided at the starters huts to look-up the course handicaps. CHANGE IN THE SCORECARD: With the change from tees to courses and the implementation of the slope and course rating, the club will be releasing a new look scorecard. The scorecards will provide updated information pertaining to the course distances, course colours, slope and course rating and space for including both the handicap index and course handicap. The scorecard will provide four tee options for men (Yellow, white, blue and red) whilst the ladies will have two tee options (Blue and red). The slope and course rating will be provided per course. The new scorecards will be available from Monday 3rd September.
