2 The Duke men s golf program will host a pair of innovative and unique events during the season. In the fall, the Blue Devils will host the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic at the Duke University Golf Course. Duke will also host the first annual Big Four Challenge on May 11 at Treyburn Country Club Duke Coca-Cola Individual Collegiate Rather than hosting a team event in the fall, Duke will welcome the top players from around the country to the Duke University Golf Course for a 54-hole individual stroke-play competition in Individuals will play 36 holes on the first day of competition and an 18-hole final round on the following day. The event is scheduled to take place Oct The field for the 2008 Duke Coca-Cola Individual Collegiate will include individuals from Duke, Augusta State, Campbell, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Guilford, Middle Tennessee State, North Carolina, N.C. State, South Carolina, Tennessee-Chattanooga, UCLA, UNC Greensboro, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Washington, Western Carolina and Winthrop Big Four Challenge at Treyburn Country Club Duke will also host the first annual Big Four Challenge on Monday, May 11. The one-day event will be a 36-hole competition between Duke, North Carolina, N.C. State and Wake Forest. The format for the Big Four Challenge will consist of an 18-hole College-Am followed by an afternoon stroke-play round. The Big Four Challenge will be an annual event that will rotate courses chosen by the four schools. Treyburn Country Club, a McConnell property, will host the inaugural event in Course architect Tom Fazio, who was recently recognized as the Best Golf Course Designer by Golf Digest Magazine, designed a championship golf course which is the centerpiece of one of the best-kept secrets in the Southeast. Sculpted into the rolling hills of northern Durham, Treyburn is currently ranked as the #9 golf course in North Carolina and #1 in the Triangle area. The course s unique design and blend of community life has been rewarded with the recognition as one of the top 100 golf/residential communities in America. The par 72 stretches out to just over 7,000 yards from the Championship tees. The course has five different sets of tees to accommodate players of all abilities. The signature hole is #18, which plays a demanding 450 yards over a winding creek to one of the most challenging greens on the course. Treyburn is kept in such superb shape that it is the site of the AJGA Bridgestone Golf Classic and has hosted numerous major tournaments including the second stage of PGA Tour qualifying in Duke University Golf Club The Duke University Golf Club, which served as the host of the 1962 and 2001 NCAA Men s Golf Championships, is the home venue for the Blue Devil golf team. Construction of the course was planned to begin prior to World War II, but the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941 put the plans on hold. After the war, the present site of 120 acres was selected. The property was carefully chosen for the unique elevation changes of its mildly rolling terrain. In 1955, Duke sought out Robert Trent Jones, whose golf course architecture was widely respected. Finally, on September 26, 1957, Duke University Golf Club opened to the public. The Duke course was immediately labeled one of the top university golf facilities in the nation. The accolades were great enough to attract the 1962 NCAA Golf Championships. Ironically, there was a soonto-be-famous golf course architect playing in that NCAA field from Yale University. His name was Rees Jones, eldest son of the Duke golf course designer. In 1988, university officials recognized that the golf course needed restoration. While no one denied the magnificent routing of its holes, the condition of the course had become unacceptable by Duke University standards. Rees Jones, now a master architect in his own right, was the only choice for this redesign. Final major construction began in June, 1993 and was completed in April, It would be difficult to describe the loving care that Rees Jones put into the design of each and every feature of the course. Throughout the redesign, he scrutinized every shot possibility, observed and considered every angle to insure that each nuance of the course would be subtle and perfectly placed. The facility plays host to a number of annual events including the Duke Golf Classic and the Duke Children s Classic. In addition, the course frequently hosts U.S. Open qualifiers. Opened Sept. 26, 1957 Par 36-36=72 Yardage (Devil) 7105 Slope 141 Rating 73.9 Home Tournament History For the past 34 years, Duke University has hosted an intercollegiate men s golf tournament featuring some of the most talented teams and players in the country. The Blue Devils have won a home event at the Duke University Golf Course nine times, (1978, 1979, 1999, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008) including the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic in four of the past five seasons. For the first 17 years, from 1974 to 1990, the tournament was a spring event known as the Iron Duke Classic. The Blue Devils posted wins in the event in 1978 and From 1982 to 1995, Duke hosted the John H. Ryan Memorial in the fall. This event was held in the memory of John H. Ryan, Jr., a Duke student in the class of 1984 and and member of the golf team, who died in a summer boating accident prior to his junior year. He was selected by Golf Magazine to the 1979 All-American Junior Golf Team. A highly valued member of the Duke golf team and a two-year letterman, John was a young man who exemplified sportsmanship, talent and a genuine love for his fellow students and teammates. He was a gentle person with a strong sense of responsibility, an unassuming presence and a quiet determination. He will always be remembered for the honorable qualities that he exhibited during his lifetime. Duke won the event in 1988 and The university hosted both the Iron Duke Classic and John H. Ryan Memorial until the season. In , the two events combined to form the John Ryan Iron Duke Classic. The Classic was held each spring for the next four years, then moved to the fall for the campaign. The fall event became the Duke Golf Classic and over the past 13 years, Duke has received support from various sponsors to host the Duke Classic. The Blue Devils have claimed Duke Classic team titles in 1999, 2004, 2005, 2006 and For the past nine years the Durham Coca-Cola Bottling Company and Coca-Cola USA have been the title sponsors for the event. 4 O.D. Vincent Head Coach 2nd Year Washington 91 O. D. V i n c e n t is in his second year at the helm of the Duke men s golf program after guiding UCLA and Washington to nine NCAA Championship appearances in 11 seasons as a head coach. Vincent, the 1999 National Coach of the Year and a threetime Pac-10 Coach of the Year, has led his teams to 35 team tournament titles. In his first year at Duke, Vincent led the Blue Devils to tournament wins at the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic (co-champs) and the River Landing Intercollegiate as well as a second place finish at the ACC Championship. Senior Michael Schachner flourished under Vincent s guidance posting two tournament wins and the second-lowest season stroke average in Duke history. Schachner recorded an ACC-high 17 under-par rounds in , while claiming All-ACC and PING All-South Region Team honors. Clark Klaasen also earned All-ACC honors for the Blue Devils. Vincent led the UCLA golf program to a pair of Pac-10 crowns and four top-10 NCAA Championship finishes from In five years with the Bruins, Vincent s squads produced 24 tournament wins and two NCAA Regional trophies. UCLA also finished fourth or better in the Pac-10 in all five seasons under Vincent. Individually, 12 players won a combined 21 tournament titles, including a pair of Pac-10 and NCAA Regional medalists, during Vincent s tenure at UCLA. Vincent also upgraded UCLA s on campus practice facilities, fundraising efforts, recruiting and results. In 2005 and 2006, UCLA was proclaimed the nation s Best Balanced golf program by Golf Digest. The survey ranks more than 1,000 schools academics, facilities, coaching, climate and golf. In , the Bruins won six team titles and finished seventh at the NCAA Championship for the second straight season. In , Vincent guided the Bruins to 11 team titles, including the Pac-10 title. Vincent claimed conference coach of the year honors for the third time in his career and was also named the 2006 Pacific Region Coach of the Year. Vincent s Coaching Resume In his third year at UCLA, Vincent led the team to tournament wins at the inaugural Gold Rush, The Prestige and the Cougar Invitational. Vincent led the Bruins to a combined 16 tournament wins in his first two seasons at UCLA, including a pair of NCAA Regional titles. The Bruins finished the season ranked No.1 by Golfstat after winning nine tournaments, including six Gold events. The team also finished second at the NCAA Championship. In his first year at UCLA, Vincent led the team to the 2003 Pac-10 championship, the school s first conference title in 18 years and third place finish at the NCAA Championship. The Bruins closed the year ranked among the top 10 in every major collegiate golf ranking, while Vincent earned Pac-10 and Pacific Region Coach of the Year honors. 5 Vincent coached eight All-Americas (11 selections), 12 All- Pac-10 performers, three Pac-10 All-Academic team members and three Academic All-Americas while at UCLA. Vincent began his coaching career at Washington in 1995 and led his alma mater to four NCAA Tournament appearances and nine event championships. He received co-pac 10 Coach of the Year, District VIII Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year accolades in 1999 after helping the Huskies to three tournament wins, a fourth place showing in the conference and a fourth place finish at the NCAA Championships. While at Washington, Vincent mentored a pair of All-America honorees in Troy Kelly and Brock MacKenzie as well as 13 allconference choices and five Pac-10 All-Academic selections. Vincent was also instrumental in the development of Washington National, the Huskies home course that opened in The course later served as the site for the 2002 NCAA Women s Golf Championships (with Duke claiming the title) and the 2003 NCAA Men s Golf West Regional (with UCLA winning the crown). Vincent, considered one of the finest players in University of Washington history, guided the Huskies to the 1988 Pac-10 championship Washington s first league crown in 25 years by claiming medalist honors as a sophomore. Vincent was an allconference and All-America selection after posting a Washington single-season record eight top-10 finishes, including two individual titles. He is the only golfer in Pac-10 history to earn medalist In Lasting Memory of Former Head Coach Rod Myers The Duke University Athletic Department lost a valuable member of its family on Friday, March 30, 2007, with the passing of men s golf head coach Rod Myers. Myers was 67 and passed away at the Duke University Medical Center after a battle with an acute form of leukemia. The 34-year mentor of the Duke men s golf program was one of the mainstays of the Duke University athletic department and a very well respected member of the golf community. Myers achieved many personal and professional milestones in his career but is best remembered for his contributions to the development of thousands of young golfers. After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan in 1961, Myers joined the coaching circle as an assistant coach at Maryland before taking the head coaching job at Ohio State in After seven seasons in Columbus, he became the head coach at Duke in During his 34 years with the Blue Devils, Myers guided Duke to 30 tournament victories, the 2005 ACC Championship and seven NCAA Championship appearances. In 2005, he was selected as the ACC Coach of the Year and Golfweek s National Coach of the Year after leading Duke to its first ACC Championship since 1966 and a school-record eighthplace tie at the NCAA Championships. After graduating from Washington in 1991 with a degree in sociology, Vincent became the only American golfer to qualify for the PGA s European Tour in He earned a spot in the 1992 British Open and was among the leaders at Muirfield after shooting an opening round 67. B o r n O r r i n Daniel Vincent in Seattle, Wash., on July 8, 1968, he is married to the former Jana Ellis, who earned All- America honors as a swimmer at Washington and Florida. The couple resides in Durham w i t h t h e i r t w o children Prada (5) and Phar (1). During his 37 years as a member of the PGA of America, Myers was a Master PGA Professional, served on the staff of the Arnold Palmer Golf Academy, was a member of the PGA Rules Committee and officiated at every Masters Championship from A PGA professional while at Ohio State, Myers was a former president and treasurer of the Golf Coaches Association of America and a former chairman of the NCAA Golf Committee and the USGA Rules Committee. In 2007, Myers received the Labron Harris, Sr. award which is presented to the college or high school coach and PGA professional whose support of the game through teaching, coaching and involvement in the community has helped ensure the continued growth of the game and represent the finest qualities the game has to offer. Myers, a native of Springfield, Ohio, was inducted into Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame in May of 1986, and was also named to the Ohio Wesleyan Sports Hall of Fame and the Springfield (Ohio) High School Hall of Fame. On February 17, 2007, Myers was inducted into the Carolinas PGA Golf Professional Hall of Fame.

6 Ryan Ressa Ast. Coach 2nd Year Washington State 03 Ryan Ressa is in his second year as an assistant coach at Duke after spending the previous two years as an assistant coach at the University of San Diego. In his first year with the Blue Devils, Ressa helped guide the team to seven top 5 finishes, including wins at the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic and River Landing Intercollegiate. He also coached Duke individuals to nine top 10 finishes in three B tournaments during the spring. Ressa handled a wide range of duties for head coach Tim Mickelson, the younger brother of PGA tour pro Phil Mickelson, during his two years at San Diego. Last season, Ressa helped the Toreros to seven top 5 tournament finishes, including a second place finish at the West Coast Conference Championship. In his first year at San Diego, he helped the team to four top 5 finishes and a berth in the 2005 NCAA West Regional Championship. Prior to joining the Toreros staff, Ressa spent two years as an assistant at Washington State. As an assistant coach with the Cougars, he gained experience in recruiting, practice planning, academic support services, tournament travel and program budgeting, while helping the team to five top 5 tournament finishes. Ressa has also worked as a lead instructor at the Stanford Golf Camp for the past four summers. A native of Pullman, Wash., Ressa was an accomplished golfer at Washington State posting four top 25 finishes in , including an eighth place showing at the U.S. Intercollegiate at Stanford. Prior to transferring to Washington State, Ressa claimed the 2002 California Junior College State Championship while playing for College of the Desert. He was also named the Foothill Conference MVP, earned all-state honors and was a member of the Dean s List in Ressa, a graduate of Pullman High School, earned four varsity letters in golf and two in basketball during his scholastic career. He also claimed the Great Northern District Championship and was named team MVP before placing fifth at the 2A State championship his senior season. Justin Hare Team Manager T.J.
