The late Dr. Herschel Cochrane, Dr. Joe D. Saunders of the National Negro Golf Association, Jackson State University Golf Coach Eddie Payton, Rose Harper-Elder of the Sports Management Institute and William (Bill) Dickey founder of the Bill Dickey Scholarship Association and the 1999 PGA Distinguished We have a great golf program at our university, says Freeman, who began his career in 1992 at Palm Harbor Golf Club in Palm Coast, Fla. We have the full support of the university and the athletic director which is also key to any good program. Now in its 23rd year, the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship will feature nearly 200 athletes from minority-serving institutions and minority students attending any college or university. The Championship, May 8-10, will be staged for the 12th consecutive year at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. PGA Teaching Professional Craig Shankland of Ormond Beach, Fla., the 2001 PGA Teacher of the Year, counts many Bethune-Cookman players among his students. We are peaking at the right time, which is positive, says Freeman. This year s team is not as powerful as year s past, but we will come well-prepared. A total of 38 colleges and universities will be represented and participate in the three-day competition that will be contested on the Tom Faziodesigned Ryder and Wanamaker Courses. The PGA of America is excited to host this Championship, which continues to grow in stature each and every year, said PGAof America President Jim Remy. The playing experience, as well as the Business of Golf Career Expo provides studentathletes with a rare opportunity to showcase their talent on and off the golf course. The 54-hole, stroke-play championship will consist of four team divisions: NCAA Men s Division I and II, and NAIA Men s and Women s. In addition, there is an Individual Invitational competition for minority men and women contestants. It is an honor to host the 2009 PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship for a 12th consecutive year, said PGA Village General Manager Bob Baldassari. We believe both courses will provide a stern test of golf as collegiate golfers from across the country gather for a most prestigious Championship. In addition to the defending Champion men s and women s teams from Bethune-Cookman University, Fayetteville State University will make a bid for a fourth consecutive title in Men s Division II. Sara Young of Florida State University, the defending champion in the Independent Women s division and a college senior, will also look to defend her title this year. The Championship also features the 15th Business of Golf Career Expo, which will highlight some 25 golf industry associations and companies that will present student-athletes with the opportunity to learn about employment opportunities within the golf industry including manufacturing, media, trade, golf course management and the premier governing bodies in the industry. 20 No postseason surprise is in store for Paine this time - Friday, May 08, of 1 5/19/2009 4:06 PM No postseason surprise is in store for Paine this time By Chris Gay Staff Writer Friday, May 08, 2009 A year after sitting out of the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship, Paine College's golf team is back. The Lions will begin play in the 54-hole invitational today in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The three-day tournament will be held at the PGA Golf Club. Paine will play in the NCAA Division II portion of the event. The Lions will face stiff competition headed up by three-time defending champion Fayetteville State, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion. "The kids are real excited to be here," first-year Paine coach Hoover Johnson said. "They're excited to get started and see how things turn out." In 2008, the Paine golf team won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament and had high hopes for winning the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship. But the day before the team's departure, school officials told the team it lacked funds to send it. Then, less than two weeks after the tournament, Paine president Dr. George C. Bradley said in a news release the team used an ineligible player, but did not describe the violation. Former golf coach Fred Summers never received an explanation why the school deemed freshman golfer Daniel Augustus ineligible after the team won the SIAC Tournament. George Mategakis, then the SIAC's director of championships, said the violation was not as severe as originally thought and that Paine would be allowed to keep the conference championship. Johnson declined to speak about last year. He said he wants to focus solely on the present and future. "I've got good kids, real solid kids," Johnson said. "We're excited about the direction the program is going." In April, Paine finished third in the SIAC Tour-nament, 58 shots behind champion Morehouse. Jerry Rapp was named to the all-tournament team after finishing fifth with scores of Rapp, a freshman, leads the team with an 8-handicap. "He has the potential to go low on any given day," Johnson said. Junior Chauncey Davis is a second-team preseason all-siac member. Davis has a 78.0 scoring average this season. Sophomore Brad Freeman, also a pitcher on the school's baseball team, and freshman Kyle Radford round out the top four. Senior Justin Hines will play as the team's No. 5 golfer. Junior Cleveland Andrews will play as an individual in the tournament. "I want the kids to enjoy the tournament," Johnson said. "This will help us see where we want to go and how much work we need to do to get better." Reach Chris Gay at (706) or chris.gay@augustachronicle.com. LUCIE, Fla. - North Carolina Central University finished in a tie for fifth place at the 23rd PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on Sunday, marking the best finish for the Eagles at the national championship event since The Eagles fired a final-round 302 for a three-day score of 892 ( ), equaling the team total of the Bulldogs of South Carolina State. "I thought they really played up to their potential," said NCCU head coach Paul Perry. "They have matured a lot since the start of the season. I think they got a little tired on the third day, which caused our scores to go up." Senior Chris Winters topped NCCU with an even-par 72, with five birdies on the day. The Durham, N.C. native finished the weekend with a five-under-par 211 ( ), tying for fifth place in the individual standings. Winters capped his college career in style, sinking a 20-foot birdie putt on his final shot as an NCCU Eagle. "Chris is our captain and he has shown a tremendous amount of leadership, both on and off the course," said Perry. "His hard work and leadership has shown the way. These past few days he has proven to me and many others that hard work can pay off." NCCU freshman Braden Cox used four birdies to post a 76 (+4) in his final round. Senior Josue Garza and junior Juan Sanchez each carded a 77 (+5), while freshman Ronald Royster added an 83 (+11). Chris Winters shot even par in his final round at the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship on Sunday. (Photo by Kyle Serba) Perry had high praise for his team after the season-ending event. "I told them that I was extremely proud of them - the way they played and they way they conducted themselves," he said. "I am pleased with what they have shown on the course and in the classroom. If they continue on this path, there is not doubt that this program will go far." Other Comments from NCCU Head Coach Paul Perry: "Josue has meant much to this team. He did not play as well as he or I wanted him to this weekend. However, he has shown much leadership during the year and I am looking forward to him working with some of our younger players. I still feel he has what it takes to play on the next level because of his ability, his distance and his work ethic." "With the recruitment of Juan Sanchez and Braden Cox, I felt all year that these two young men have put us in a position that we could do bigger and better things. If both of them work this hard this summer as they have all year, we should be one of the top minority teams in the country." "Their play the past few days is really making me look forward to next year. It made me see what is possible." 26 South Carolina State University - Cacho Earns Medalist Honors, Bulldogs of 2 5/19/2009 3:55 PM Cacho Earns Medalist Honors, Bulldogs Tie for 5th at PGA Minority Tourney First Bulldog to Earn Honor since /10/2009 3:43:59 PM ORANGEBURG, SC South Carolina State freshman Roberto Cacho, facing a tough course setup Sunday at the 23 rd PGA National Minority Collegiate Golf Championship, managed only an even-par 72 Sunday, his higher round of the event, for a 54-hole total of ( ) 203, but it was good enough for medalist honors in the men s Division I standings. Cacho, who had nine birdies and a round of nine-under-par on Saturday, edged Texas-Pan America s Armen Kirakossian by one stroke for the title in his first year of Fr. Roberto Cacho participation in the tournament. Kirakossian had a one-under par 71 Sunday for a 54-hole total of ( ) 204. Cacho s triumph marks the first time an SC State golfer has captured medalist honors since Martin Roache won the second of two straight trophies in 1991, when the Bulldogs finished second to Jackson State. The Morales, Mexico native was elated to win the prestigious individual trophy. It s amazing, Cacho said. I played really well throughout the week. My personal goal coming in was to be in contention Sunday with a chance to win. I wanted to play well, and it s great to wind up winning it. Cacho, after his nine-birdie round on Saturday, had just three birdies and survived a bogey and a double-bogey to earn the top trophy. The course setup on Sunday was much more difficult, he said. The pins were mostly in the back of the greens and it was hard to get close, but I somehow managed par and a one-stroke victory. Bulldog Head Coach Herman Belton called Cacho s performance outstanding. Roberto was simply outstanding the entire tournament, said Belton. It s truly a pleasure to have a great student and outstanding player on your team. He is a solid player, talented, discipline and poised. He has a bright future ahead of him. SC State finished in a tie for 5 th in the team competition after a three-day total of ) 892. Tennessee State had a 36-hole total of ( ) 860 for a one-stroke victory over defending champion Bethune- Cookman who was at ( ) 861. Texas-Pan America was third at ( ) 879, followed by Florida A&M at ( ) 889, followed by the Bulldogs and North Carolina Central ( ), both at 892.
