The Pledge followed, led by CHRISTIAN PAPPAS and then DAVE STURTZ gave The Invocation. GUESTS Today s lone guest was Rochester Rotarian FRANK MEHLENBACHER who cut his Rotary eye teeth in Penfield and served as Club president in , SUNSHINE REPORT Today s Sunshine Report came from NORMA WEBER who thanked members for their condolences offered upon the loss of her son, Ken. ANNOUNCEMENTS, ETC. 1. Next Tuesday s meeting will take place in the evening, beginning at 6:00 PM, in our usual room at Shadow Lake. Dinner next week will cost $13 for Rotarians and guests. Each diner will receive a free 50/50 ticket (extras still available at 3/$2). 2. The Rotary District Conference takes place in Gettysburg over April 29-May 1. At least eight Penfield Rotarians (BELLOMO, PETHICK, BEST & BEST, MILTON, TURNER, DUT and MADY) plan to attend. Vocal Contest winner, and PHS senior, Matt Swenson will be the District s guest and add to the entertainment on Friday evening. President Charlie will be called to the podium on several occasions to receive awards earned by The Club under his leadership. 3. BRUCE VANDERWARKER wore his highway vest to bring attention to Town Clean-Up Day on Saturday, May 7. Penfield Rotary Norma MARY ANN reported that VOLKER HAUSIN will undergo an additional intestinal procedure. BOB ROSENBERG has high spirits but finds walking to be wearisome. Both BOB SMITH and JACK BEST spotted long-time member TOM RECZEK at St. Joe s Church this past weekend. They agreed that he looks good, but cannot go into the public too much because his immune system is weak. Bruce kicks off highway cleanup 2
3 cleans up route 441 from 250 to Harris Road. A crew of at least eight members would make the job easier and more fun. Tell Bruce (brucev@rochester.rr.com) that you plan to meet him at 9:00 AM that morning at the Penfield Community Center where coffee/donuts will be served. Clean-up ends no later than noon. 4. BRUCE also provided information about the Club s upcoming 14 th Annual Golf Tournament on June 6. MARY ANN MADY will chair golfers registration beginning at 10:30, with a shot-gun start at 12:00 PM and dinner at 6:00 PM. The goal: 36 foursomes teeing off at noon- -- that s one foursome for each Rotarian to recruit, said BRUCE. BRUCE will an invitation that will include all the details. Rotarian non-golfers will be welcome to attend dinner ($40) where tournament prizes will be awarded and all attendees will have an opportunity to bid on several Pick-a-Prize baskets. Committee members BOB SMITH, DON MILTON and DAVE STURTZ joined with BRUCE and President CHARLIE to cut a commercial about Bruce, Charlie, Dave, Don and Bob the tournament. Click on this link to view it: qe. Or, find it on the Penfield Rotary Channel on YouTube: 5. All veteran Rotarians are invited to join this year s Class of 2010 and Board members at the club s first fireside chat for newer members on Wednesday, April 27. Special speakers will be past Penfield Rotary Group Study Exchange team members TC Pellett (Africa in 2006) at lunch and Kim Clark (Japan in 2001) over dessert. 6. Invitations to host next year s District Governor-elects (remember DGE Deon VanZyl who was hosted by the Bests this past January?) have been offered to all Rotarians in our district. The DGEs will visit for a week and fly on to San Diego for their special training on January 14. President CHARLIE has the contact information. 7. NELS CARMAN transferred 20 dictionaries to JOHN TURNER who in turn will give them to SALVA DUT for distribution to third graders in southern Sudan. HAPPY DOLLAR$ HAPPY DOLLARS came from: NELS, $1, who beat pneumonia MARY ANN, $2, but forgot why JACK BEST, $2, for being selected to participate in a study regarding varicose veins, then found out after the meeting that his veins weren t varicose enough. President CHARLIE: $5, to see sickbay members back for a meeting LINDA KOHL, $2, for enjoying Roc City Uncorked IVETH REYNOLDS, $4, just feeling happy MICHELE STOKES, $1, in a happy mood JOHN TURNER, $1, looking forward to taking SALVA to the District Conference Frank Mehlenbacher, $1, for oldtyme Penfield Rotary experience ZAC DRESSNER, $2, celebrating his and Jennifer s 14 th wedding anniversary BOB SMITH, $1, who bemoaned 3
4 ZAC s lack of his Rotary pin and name badge PROGRAM JACK BEST introduced Hugh Franklin, longtime member of the Penfield Ambulance Corps. ty, with 15 in training. Each call will have an EMT, with a driver who has at least taken CPR and emergency driver training. Hugh mentioned that Urgent Care facilities are excellent for bumps, scratches and bites. But even Urgent Care will call for an ambulance if a person comes in who has suffered a heart attack or stroke. Penfield Ambulance s budget is approximately $900,000 annually, with third party billing to insurance companies providing the bulk of their funding. It has no full-time employees, but it contracts Monroe Ambulance to provide one ambulance and crew during the day. There are three ambulances, with the newest one purchased in 2010 for $140,000. Hugh said that the Monroe County 911 System is among the finest in the country. Because of its technology, an ambulance is often dispatched before the caller to 911 has completed the call. Hugh Franklin Hugh was invited to take his first EMT (emergency medical technician) course in 1968 and stayed on! Hugh has served in most every capacity as an officer and EMT. Training now requires 120 hours of preparation. Hugh s messages: 1. Consider volunteering for the ambulance corps 2. Have both spouses take the CPR course. Hugh will let us know when a course will be offered. 3. Pay attention to your body. If something hurts, find out why. Exercise, but be careful. Penfield Ambulance Corps receives more calls from the Eastside YMCA than it does from Dunkin Donuts! The old ambulances used to be Cadillacs and were used only for transporting sick and injured persons. Today s box ambulances carry a significant variety of drugs and medical devices that enable EMTs to treat the patient on the way to the hospital. In 2010, Penfield Ambulance responded to 3,250 calls (nearly ten a day), a far cry from the 127 calls logged from its beginning in So far in 2011 = 1,116 calls! Volunteers are needed to help the 60 members currently on du- Hugh Franklin and Pres. Charlie 4
