Captain s Charity Day raises 50k for Breast Cancer Research From Friday May 18th saw a large turnout at Galway Golf Club, Salthill for the Captain s Charity Day in aid of Breast Cancer Research. The Play in Pink event saw over 120 golfers compete over the beautifully prepared 18-hole layout and the novel format of the Champagne Pink Ball Scramble certainly added to the enjoyment of all those present. A total of 50,000 was raised on the day for Breast Cancer Research, a national charity based at the Lambe Institute for Translational Research at NUI Galway. Speaking at the event, Club Captain Phillip expressed his delight at the total of the funds raised on the day and thanked everyone who played their part in making the day such a huge success, from club members and entrants, to the very generous sponsors including platinum sponsors Galway Golf Club, Burkeway Homes, Tom Dempsey Carpets & Flooring, Future Financial Services, The Front Door Pub & Glenlo Abbey Hotel. Club Lotto The Winning Numbers for the Lotto Draw on Friday May 18 th were 3, 4, There was no winner of the Jackpot of 6,075. There was 1 match 3 winner - well done to Finola McGuinness. The Jackpot this evening will be 6,100. Ladies Inter-club Matches Last Saturday (19th) the Senior Cup team played against Athenry in Galway Bay and despite putting up a great effort Athenry won. The Final on Sunday was won by Roscommon who are the Senior Cup district champions for The mixed team also played Athenry on Wednesday but again despite a good battle, Athenry came out on top.

2 This coming week will see the Challenge cup team playing Gort on Monday 28th May at 2pm. As always your support for the teams on the day is welcome and if you are available it would be great to show that support by coming to see some of the matches. Thanks to the management, team panels and caddies. Upcoming Connacht Ladies Golf Events. 1. The Connacht women s and girls Open Championships will be held in Ballinrobe on 28th/29th June, Seniors (handicap 12 and under), Juniors (handicap 13 to 26). Closing date 16th June, Entry fee 35, enter on Golfnet. 2. Connacht Senior ladies (over 50) will be held on 21 June in Loughrea, entry fee 15, Date of entry 5pm to 9pm on Thursday 14th June to Mary at Notices re both of these events on the notice board in ladies locker room. Men s Inter-club Matches Galway GC go down to Athenry in Mixed Like the Over 55 s the Mixed Team Captained by Stan Mortimer and Anne Treacy went down 3 ½ - 1 ½ to a very strong Athenry team on a sun drenched evening last Wednesday. The only winners for Galway were Cathal Treacy and Lynn Morgans who played great golf to secure a 5/4 victory. Men s News Last Sunday was the Ryan Junior Scratch Cup day and Martin Ruane proved too good for a strong field with a total of 154. Ruane laid the foundation for his victory with a brilliant 74 in the morning when conditions were perfect for golf. His second round of 80 was only bettered by Runner Up Damien Hehir whose 77 was the only score that broke 80 in the much tougher conditions in the afternoon. Hehir s total of 155 was good enough for second. Other notable performances on the day were undoubtedly the brilliant 73 by Club Vice Captain Kieran Daly who finished birdie/birdie in his morning round. Ronan O Connor had the best nett score of the day with a fantastic 67 nett in his morning round. Congrats Martin on a great and very popular victory. Costello Cup is now down to the Last 32 / Squeaky Bum Time. The Caddy has been having a look at the field and these are his predictions for the matches that will be coming up thick & fast now. The first quarter has a past winner in Noel Burke but the Caddy likes the look of Pat Martyn off 15. Alan Mulholland may have a say!!! Second Quarter has the runner up from 2016 in Paul O Kennedy but the match that attracts most interest here, is undoubtedly County Football Star Sean Armstrong and big hitting Cathal Treacy. The Caddy thinks the experience of Armstrong will see him coming out of this quarter. He expects Brendan Forde also to put up a good showing.

3 The Third Quarter looks very strong (at least on paper) Winner Eddie Mulholland will be fancied but he will have it all do against Owen McDonagh who took out Mike Hennelly in the previous round but the caddies fancy in this Quarter is Ger Hession, probably the most consistent low handicapper in the Club. The Fourth Quarter is without a doubt the Cream of the Crop with 4 elite category players remaining and all will be expected to win, Mikey Burke, Aodan Comerford, Martin Ruane and Ger O Farrell. Ruane won t have it all his own way against Roscommon s finest in Paul Hickey but he is definitely the man in form and I expect him to get through this section. Best of luck to all the lads!!! GUI Moves the Dates for the 2018 Cups & Shields Finals The pinnacle of club golf in Ireland, the AIG Cups and Shields All-Ireland finals will now take place from Thursday 4th October to Sunday 7th October. Mark Wehrly, Championships Manager with the GUI said: Since the announcement of the Feile Classical towards the end of April, we have had discussions with Thurles Golf Club, local stakeholders, our sponsor AIG and colleagues in the media on the impact of the festival on our schedule for the Cups and Shields Finals. Of primary concern is the complete lack of available accommodation at Thurles and in the wider hinterland were we to proceed with the Cups and Shields on our preferred dates, although ancillary concerns relating to traffic management, access to the course and facilities and pressure on other local services and amenities was also borne in mind. Having discussed the issue with everyone concerned, the only option available to us was to reschedule the event at the earliest viable date and avoid clashing with other significant golf events around that time at home and abroad. As a result of the change it is necessary to alter the dates for the finals of the Irish Mixed Foursomes at Milltown Golf Club. These will now proceed on Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd October. 5 Costello Cup & Bobby Molloy Cup Player Auction & Book As you will have read above The Costello Cup is reaching its climax and James Heaslip will auction the remaining players on Friday 1st June. The auction will take place as part of the 1 st social evening of the summer at approx. 9.30pm. Fundraising Breakfast with Roy Keane in aid of Galway WFC Roy Keane will be doing a breakfast fundraiser for the Galway Women s FC in the Lough Rea Hotel and Spa on Friday 8th June. Proceeds will go to the Women s soccer teams and a contribution will be made to the Irish Guide Dogs. The senior team is managed by Billy Cleary. MC for the event Joanne Murphy will interview Roy on what it takes to face down adversity in the heat of a challenge with a keen interest in The Secret to Success. It promises to be an interesting event and will run from 7:30am 9am sharp. Each table will cost 500 or each seat will be 50. There will be networking opportunities after the event has finished. Cancer fighter Nick Edmund completes his epic 2,000km golf-walk of Ireland s wild side Golf industry veteran and two-time cancer survivor Nick Edmund has successfully completed his gruelling marathon golf-walk along the entire 2,000km length of Ireland s Wild Atlantic Way, carrying a set of golf clubs on his back. The 57-year-old former Faldo Design Managing Director received a tumultuous welcome from family, friends and well wishers as he arrived at Old Head of Kinsale Golf Links in County Cork, where he raised the Global Golf4 Cancer flag after playing the stunning clifftop 4th hole. It was the culmination of an astonishingly-heroic, two-part endeavour for Nick to raise awareness of Cancer Care West in Ireland, and of other cancer-fighting initiatives within the wider golfing community, by playing the 4th hole at the 40 golf clubs he passed along the way and planting a Global Golf4 Cancer flag for his charity campaign. In remission for head and neck cancer, Nick walked the first 1,000km of the coastal route from Malin Head, in County Donegal, to Galway Golf Club, in County Galway, in spring 2017.

6 His plan to complete the second half of the Wild Atlantic Way last Autumn, walking the remaining 1,000km from Galway to Kinsale, was thwarted when a new cancer diagnosis required four weeks of radiotherapy treatment followed by a nine-and-a-half-hour scalpreplacement operation. However, remarkably undeterred, he resumed his ambitious golfwalk in early March. After toasting the end of his incredible achievement, Nick said: I feel very tired though not perhaps as shattered as I thought I might! My feet and right leg in particular are quite sore, but the plus side far outweighs any negatives. While I never doubted my determination to complete the task, a part of me is frankly amazed that I managed it especially given I'd very little previous walking experience and, with the various cancer issues, I hadn't played much golf or walked many golf courses in the past few years. I feel quite overwhelmed by the welcome, kindness and generous support I received in Ireland, both from the golf clubs and the Irish public. From first to last, the wind appeared constantly at my back and I reckon I was given at least a hundred thousand welcomes! On the backing he has received for Global Golf4 Cancer, Nick said: The interest in the global potential of the campaign is very encouraging. Flying a special cancer awareness flag on the 4th hole of a golf course is, on the face of it, a relatively simple idea but one that seems to have really made an impression with the golfing community and people want to support it. No doubt the main reason is because cancer affects the lives of so many people all over the world, but also, I think, because it's a good-news golf story. As well as 'flying the flag for cancer sufferers worldwide we are spreading some hope and light, which is why finishing on Old Head's iconic 4th hole adjacent to a lighthouse added a powerful touch of symbolism. Global golf tourism industry association IAGTO is a supporter and sponsor of GG4C. Chief Executive Peter Walton joined Nick for the final leg of his marathon and said: It was both humbling and invigorating to witness the culmination of Nick s conquering of the Wild Atlantic Way at Old Head on Friday. That achievement itself was massive, but now IAGTO is looking forward to continuing our support for GG4C in the years to come, helping to grow the campaign globally by engaging with our events and encouraging IAGTO golf courses everywhere to fly the GG4C flag on their 4th hole.
