Thanks to everyone who came out. The music and entertainers, especially Elvis, and our own Bob Quick as one of the Blues Brothers, were well worth the admission ticket. And in the end we were even treated to some of Neil Diamond s wonderful oldies! The organizers of the concert were indeed hoping for a better turnout. Sadly we only had about 190 guests in attendance. Our profit for the club was approx. $ , far less than we had hoped for. However, because the show was so well received by those who did attend, Joe Garon of Turnkey Productions assures us that if we were to host the event again next year we could expect to do better in both attendance and profit. HARROW FAIR Many thanks to our members who manned the Curling Club of Kingsville booth at the Harrow Fair: acting as ambassadors both for our Club, and curling in general throughout our region Handing out literature, answering questions, giving out membership forms, and actively promoting our club Many thanks to Jay Jones, Andrew Willemsma, Anne Siegel-Robinson, Barry Pettapiece, Bob Banwell, Georgia Klym-Skeates, Craig Hargreaves, Chris & Dave McCormick, Jessica Brook, John Willemsma, Carl & Sue Young, Tony Braithwaite, Bruce & Jackie Cooper, Doralynn Cantin, Jennifer & Mike Chadsey, Rob & Tamara & Amber Fick. Thanks also to those that set up the booth: Pat Laing, Sandy, Dan & Jessica Brook, Casey Kojima & Bonnie Monminie; to those that took it down on the Sunday: Rob & Tamara Fick, Pat Dawson & Tony Braithwaite; to Pat Laing for preparing the flyers; and especially of course, to Bonnie
4 Volume 10.1a On the button Monminie and her helpers for preparing the new and impressive displays. FALL CLEAN-UP The CCK annual preseason clean-up is scheduled for Saturday October 3rd, starting at 9:00 a.m. Many hands make light work we need as many out as we can get. Even if you can only stay an hour we ll take it! Congratulations to Debbie & Frank Willoughby who were married late last spring! We wish you many years of health and happiness together. And curling success too! UPCOMING EVENTS CURLERS ON THE COURSE Join us for a day of golf, food & drinks! When: Saturday Sept 26 th Where: Kingsville Golf Club Time: Noon Start, Texas Scramble format What: Golf Tournament & Steak BBQ at the Curling Club. Cost: $ per person includes 18 holes of golf, cart & dinner. Special for non golfers: Dinner only $ Contacts: Cary Lamoure (519) & As in past years Terry will be providing Soup-and- Sandwiches for lunch. This will be a general inside-outside facility clean-up of all areas: Lounge, washrooms, bar, change-rooms, hallways, entrance way, doors, windows, walls, floors, ceilings, storage rooms, compressor room, water heater room, building perimeter/yard check/cleaning, lighting check [inside and out]... And a long list of small stuff. Please bring your favorite pail, gloves, cleaning products, brooms, dust pans, vacuum cleaners, shop vacuum cleaners, air freshener, weed trimmer, rake, hoe, etc., etc., etc., as we want to do a thorough top to bottom cleanup. We have some supplies, but the more the merrier. As to the general outside perimeter cleanup just two or three guys could accomplish this fairly quickly because the golf course crew usually handles most of this for us on an ongoing basis through the summer. Dan (our new ice maker) may well need help in the rink and he has first call on volunteers not otherwise assigned. The big thing, if not already done, is to bring in the cement blocks to hold down the bulged piping when he starts to chill everything down. We probably need to steam clean all the carpets and a good Febreezing might help improve the "aura" [or aroma] of the place!! Thanks in advance to all those who come out and lend their support in getting us ready for an even-better season of curling in !!!! Deadline for signup: Tuesday, Sept 20. Note: Of our two earlier scheduled Curlers on the Course golf tournaments this summer, the first had to be cancelled for bad weather; and the other was postponed for bad weather and slow ticket sales. These events have traditionally brought in valuable start-up funds for our curling season. The postponement has left us with a bit of a cash flow challenge to start out our new season: but not an insurmountable one. But we do need a good turnout this time! HOPE TO SEE EVERYONE THERE!
5 Volume 10.1a On the button CURL FOR THE CURE On Saturday Oct 17 our Club is hosting a Curl for the Cure fun-spiel as a joint fund raiser for breast cancer research. The entry cost of only $ per person includes a period of free instruction (for new curlers), two six end games, lunch, curling prizes, prizes for pledges, silent auction, and a T-shirt for all participants: what a deal! Instruction begins at 8:30am, and registration at 9:00am. For more information contact Sandy Brook sbrrok@xplorenet.com or Sarah Shklov shklovsa@live.com or (519) Everyone welcome: Club members and/or guests, all ages, all skill levels. Come on out and let s start this season on the ice with all the fun it deserves to be! CURLING DAY FOR BROWNIES, CUBS, GUIDES AND SCOUTS The afternoon of Saturday November 14 has been set aside to host a Scouting & Guiding Curling Outing at our club. If you have, or know of youngsters in either of these organizations please pass the word along and have their leaders contact Sandy Brook (519) Cost only $ per person including instruction, curling & snacks. What a deal! COLTS & TROPHY March 17-21, 2010 ORIENTATION WEEK Week of October 19 th 23 rd October The Club will be open each evening for tours and free curling - with instruction. Now is the time to invite out all your friends, family, co-workers and neighbours to come out and try a season of curling. We have attached a membership form for you to duplicate and hand out to ALL of the above!!! And hey, to sweeten the pot The board voted to reinstate an old promotion: Any current member who brings in a New Member (defined as a person who hasn't curled in our club within the last 3 consecutive seasons) will be awarded a $ bar tab What could be better? What more incentive do you need! As you are by now aware, our Club is hosting the Tim Horton s 2010 Colts/Trophy Provincial Championships from March 17 through to March 21. There will be 8 men s teams and 8 ladies teams coming from all over Ontario to compete in this competition. This event has historically not only been great money maker for our club, but just as importantly has served as a wonderful promotion for our club and indeed for the sport of curling throughout the region. As a Club, we certainly want to put our best foot forward and exhibit the hospitality that our Club is noted for! The Colts & Trophy Committee is now in full swing. But between now and the event we will need help from absolutely ALL members of the Club. So please offer your assistance when the Conveners come calling. Needed immediately are volunteers to help solicit advertising for the EVENT PROGRAM as well as to sell advertising to be placed on the walls in the rink area. Dan Brook, sbrook@xplornet.com , and his team (including Bonnie Monminie, Pat Laing, Les Kovacs, Shelly Kwiat, Sandy Brook, Bruce Cooper and others) have a promotional Package prepared and ready. They have set two more orientation dates to explain the package for those willing to help sell advertising: Sept 24 th at 7 pm and Sept 25 th at 9 am. Call Bonnie ( ) or Pat ( ) for more information... And watch for a specific flyers to follow.
6 Volume 10.1a On the button MEMBERSHIP DRIVE THIS & THAT SPONSORS & ADVERTISING COMMITTEE Our Advertising and Sponsors Committee has been very active all summer and are about to launch a major campaign the like of which we have not seen for very many years, certainly not in my time at the Curling Club. For more information please contact Sand & Dan Brook (519) IN-ICE ADVERTISING NEW MEMBERS WELCOMED WITH OPEN ARMS! We don't have to tell you all the benefits of curling. We'd be preaching to the converted... But I bet many of your friends do not know that not only is curling a great social game, but an excellent cardiovascular sport as well (except for skip, perhaps). Recent human kinetics studies have shown that over a typical 8-end game the "front end" burn more calories than they would in a volleyball game! Cold environment, constant motion and sweeping all contribute. And for those "armchair jocks" curling strategy can be immensely challenging: some even call it "chess on ice". Curling is great "brain exercise" to boot! Our club's membership numbers have slipped way down. We really need to bring out a good number of new curlers this season. If everyone of us each brought out one (just one) new member, our membership numbers would be back to where they could - and should be! If you don't talk to your friends about curling - who will? Sign up your company up now Cost $ to $ each, depending on size Contact Dan Brook (519) if interested. TV SYSTEM RAFFLE Early this season we are organizing a major raffle for an up-market TV home-theater unit (including surround sound) with a retail value of over $1,000. Tickets will be sold at $ 5.00 each or 3 for $ More details to follow, see flyers in the club and to come in . EUCHRE ANYONE? See Flyers posted at the club, and news items on our website. Contact : Doreen Cole: YOUR NAME ON A CURLING STONE FOR POSTERITY Joined our Club in just the past year or two? Ever noticed the names on the rocks in the rink? For only $ you too could have your name on a curling stone! Contact Andrew Willemsma (519) SMART SERVE COURSE Everyone who serves behind the bar at our Club has to be Smart Serve Certified. If you would like to take the course (or even know anyone outside of our club who might want Smart Serve training) please contact Sara Shklov (519) SENIOR CURLING What a great way for couch potatoes to get involved in activity which is healthy and enjoyable. On Tuesday mornings and now also on Thursday mornings, we will have senior curling for both members and pay-as-youplay non-members (open to ALL age groups, not just seniors, ed.). These time slots are established for complete flexibility. There are no established teams as curlers simply show up and teams are then set up for that day s curling. This way no one is inconvenienced, nor is anyone looking for spares. This is an ideal arrangement for folks who are travelers. There are loads of bonspiels for seniors which enable you to curl in other clubs and other locales. For mixed spiels women need to be 45 to qualify. The men s spiels are established as tiers 55, 60 and 65 years of age. Prices individually range from $ 18 to $ 25 which includes 2 games of curling, lunch ranging from soupand-sandwich to buffet. Everyone goes home with a prize, generally meat and wine. Where else could you get a day s fun for such a price as this? Dates for events in our club are as in the Year at a Glance section above and flyers for bonspiels at other clubs nearby can be found on the bulletin boards. Our club hosts three senior bonspiels, open to both club and outside members.. Doesn t this sound like a great winter activity? Join us! Hugo Murray.
7 Volume 10.1a On the button PAY AS YOU PLAY Back by popular demand: BOTH Tuesday mornings and Thursday mornings will see pay-as-you-play again this year. NEW MEMBER INCENTIVES We have special rates for BOTH new members and members in their second year. Moreover we offer exceptional deals on all curling equipment for new curlers everything from brooms to shoes, from curling sticks to clothing. Contact: Tony Braithwaite (519) GROUP RENTALS Planning an office party? A birthday party?... Perhaps just a get-together with visiting friends? There are still lots of spots available to bring out your group for a few hours of curling have a meal - or just hang out in the lounge. For bookings contact Casey Kojima (519) or Sarah Shklov (519) OUR NEW YEAR S EVE EVENT Back to the 50 s... Time to get into the groove, get out the Brylcream - and dig out all the good old 45 s. Theme: Rebel Without a Cause EQUIPMENT Shoes, brooms, gloves, grippers, etc. Get your equipment from our club and any profits stay IN OUR club! The list of equipment available and prices is posted in the coat check room off the downstairs foyer and of course on our website! Any questions/ requests contact Tony Braithwaite (519) The Zehrs Save-A-Tape program returns a percentage of cash-register tape receipts to non-profit organizations that provide recreation or support for seniors or youth in our community. We owe a HUGE vote of thanks to Tom Geiger who collated and submitted receipts for us over the past few years. We are now actively looking for someone in our club to take over this task. Our Club has earned hundreds of dollars, $ in 2009 alone, simply by collecting and submitting the receipts from Zehrs! Even if you do not regularly shop at Zehr s you probably know somebody who does. Ask them to put the tapes aside for you and then collect them monthly. The tape register receipts can be deposited in the box which is near the bar at the club. In fact, start a Zehr s network. Ask your friends and neighbours (and their friends and neighbours) to save the checkout register receipts for the club. By retrieving them on a monthly basis, your network members will know that it is important to the club and they will more likely remember to set the valuable tapes aside. Remember this is an easy, year round, activity that will greatly assist the club. Start your Zehrs network today. CURLING CLUB CAFÉ Terry Donovan is back with us again this year and has a GREAT LINE UP especially for Friday nights! Healthy eating too All cooking is still with Trans-fat-Free Oil! Lots of Salad & Vegetable type dishes Served from 6 pm till 11 pm.
