Members Newsletter Milnathort Golf Club Issue 4 - June 2014 Hi folks You may, or may not, have noticed that this issue is running a bit late. This is partly due to the fact that I ve been on holiday. However, it is also because I m concerned that publishing every month might be a bit too frequent and it s difficult to have sufficient content. As I said in the last issue, without contributions from you, the members, I fear it s becoming a bit samey with the same contributors month after month. It would be great to have some fresh perspectives on what is going on in and around the club, to keep things interesting and appealing. As I m sure you appreciate, each issue takes a considerable amount of time to put together but it needs to be a worthwhile exercise in terms of its importance to members. What would really help us out is if we could get some feedback from members as to the usefulness and value of a regular club newsletter. Please feel free to me (in strictest confidence, so you can be completely honest!) to let me know what you enjoy/don t enjoy, whether you skim or read every word, should it be monthly or maybe quarterly? Let me know at nancysb@sky.com. All feedback, positive or negative, would be appreciated. Looking forward to hearing from you. The Latest News from our Seniors Section A wise man once told me that It s good sportsmanship not to pick up lost golf balls, particularly when they re still rolling. So be wary when walking up the 5th. Unconfirmed reports are coming in that a pair of shorts has recently been seen on the course but, with no evidence, it s hard to believe at this early stage of the season. The Seniors now have their own Club address so if you re male and over 55 and want to be kept in the know, drop me details at Milnathort.snr@btconnect.com Turn out for the 9 hole Medal on a Thursday at 2.00 has been steady but our boys could still do with a few new participants. Again the section s notice board is the place to start. Open of the Month - As a trial, we re going to highlight the Seniors Opens of Clubs that we have interclub matches with. There s no other involvement by the Seniors Section. We ll just put a notice up so that if two or more members are interested they can contact each other and arrange travelling together, hopefully renewing some old acquaintances along the way.
Results in May - The Matchplay Qualifier Rd.1 on the 1st was won by Bill Michie with yours truly in 2nd place. (The 2nd Round is scheduled for 12th June and thereafter the top 4 scratch and the top 8 handicappers go through to the Matchplay stages.) An away match on 8th May at Falkland saw us winning 31/2 to 2/12 so well done lads. (How about matching jumpers with Milnathort logo s by the way?) Ian McMillan won the C Macari Rd2 Stableford on 15th May with 39 points, followed by Graham Penman on 37 and Bob Tolson on 35 points. John Power won the sweep on 22nd May and Ian McMillan was 2nd. 4 Ball Better Ball OPEN - Thursday 19th June is definitely a date for your diary and is the ideal opportunity to invite a friend from another golf club to sample the delights of Milnathort. Details in the locker room but with an entry fee of only 14 per pair and a chance of winning 100 this must be the opportunity you have been waiting for. feed applied and watering done. However all small issues are being dealt with as best as we can and the green staff are aware that bunkers etc need attention. This will be undertaken in the next few weeks with the committee supporting us in every way they can and hopefully a second mode of transport will be back in place as the one we had has finally, after 15 years service, given in. I, as head green keeper, would thank you for your continued support none better shown than Mr Roy Cogbil cutting the hedge in preparation for the Gents Open. Thank you, Roy! Keep golfing and remember feedback is essential for me and the green staff to help improve your enjoyment on the course. Thank you Jason JASON SAYS: Aaarrrrggghhh! Well, I m sorry to have to start this report at a very frustrating time at the club. Where to begin? Well, firstly, we have had an infestation of leather jackets (crane fly larvae). These wee brutes eat the roots of grass and have set the greens back a couple of weeks in preparation so the standard s not quite there yet I m afraid. However, they are now beginning to recover and the surfaces are not too far away so I ask for your patience and they will be back to normal soon. We have had the worst possible start to our busiest time, with other jobs having to take a back seat to getting greens treated, What s been happening in our Ladies Section? Our Ladies Open Greensomes took place on Sunday 4 th May. We had a grand turnout and the Jim Greig Targe was won by L Kyle and C Lambie with Second place went to K McConnell and R Kinnell with 70.6 and J Milne and G Tate took 3 rd place with 72. Wednesday 14th May saw our ladies having an excellent 3-0 win against Muckhart ladies at Milnathort. These inter club friendly matches are such a great way of meeting ladies from other clubs. Our next is away to Kinross on 6 June to retain the coveted PUTTER.
Sunday 18 th May was our chance to welcome friends from other clubs to play in our Ladies Invitational. A great day was had by all, with very close results for the winning pairs. The catering was first rate and the prizewinners were delighted with their crystal glassware. The Lady Captain s Cup will be held on Wednesday 18 th June with just one tee time of 5.30 pm. It s always an enjoyable and fun social event so I d like to invite as many of you as possible to come along and play then enjoy a bite to eat in the Clubhouse. The list is now up in the Ladies Locker Room for our Away Day on Sunday 24 th August. We are returning to Braehead at Alloa where we had such a great day last year and they have given us a very good deal for our return visit. Get your name on the list asap!! Wishing you all a continued season of good golfing, Jackie Winners Elspeth Caldow and Linda King with a score of 70 ITEMS FOR SALE Second place went to Gillian Pemberton and Lyn Murray with 70.5 LADIES X HOT DRIVER VERY GOOD CONDITION TEL BETTY BRANNAN And in third place, Alexis Crawford and Maureen Glennie with 71
puts!!!! Hi Folks, May has been a busy month at the club but everything seems to be going in the right direction. At last the greens are getting back to what we are used to and removing yet another excuse for our three your best to remember and replace the divots at the time. Actions on these issues are paramount to helping us all enjoy our course and keep it in good condition for us and our visitors. Thanks in advance for your help. Cheers Charlie The Gents Open was a great success as we had a full house and had to turn many people away. The weather was also kind to us on the day and the golf was really good for some and not so good for others like me. It was also a very profitable day for the club as, in addition to our entry fees and the raffle money, the Bar and Catering did very well. I would like to bring a couple of topics that need addressed to your attention. 1 - CUTTING IN ON THE COURSE Being a nine hole course, at busy times some members find it difficult to get on the first tee and decide to cut in on the 3rd or the 8th. This has not been a problem until recently where I have had quite a few complaints. I would remind all that it is OK to cut in (outside of competition times) providing there is a clear hole and you make every effort not to hold up the players behind. 2 - REPLACING DIVOTS There is a big problem in that many individuals are not replacing their divots on the fairways. Next time you re on the course, just take the time to look at this problem and you will see for yourself we need to do something about it. We will be communicating in the near future about some initiatives to help but I would ask that you all do CLUBHOUSE NEWS You may have noticed some new (and some not-sonew) faces behind the bar. Chris Ness many of you will already know and Danielle Ramage has returned so she is not a stranger. Claire Aitken, however, is a new member of staff, so if you see Claire behind the bar introduce yourself to her so she can get acquainted with our members. Don t forget our Fish Tea Fridays are still running for those of you who don t want to cook after a hard week at work. It doesn t have to be fish, of course. When you phone to book, just let the staff know what you fancy and we ll do our best to accommodate. We still need ladies for our Jubilee Mixed Foursomes on the first Saturday of every month. It s a fun 9 holes with a bite to eat afterwards so, come on, ladies, get your names down. Looking forward to seeing you in the clubhouse Jan Gibson, Bar Convenor
And finally, we are thinking about.. Maureen Given who has broken her shoulder following a fall (don t worry Maureen, I won t tell how you did it!!) We re all thinking about you and looking forward to seeing you in the clubhouse soon. And this month, D is for Dress Although clothes in a variety of styles are acceptable on a golf course, a few general pointers are worth keeping in mind when selecting an outfit: It should be visible to an individual with normal eye sight looking out the window of a spacecraft in orbit. It should be made out of a fabric derived from a substance that was mined or refined rather than grown or raised. It should jam radar. It should be composed of no fewer than eight separate colours or shades and should bear a minimum of four distinct emblems.
