1 ARABIAN HORSE ASSOCIATION REGION I Winter 2007 Dinner Meeting Invitation Director's Message Saturday, February 10th Euro Deli & Catering Old Town Front St., Temecula Social Hour -6:00 p.m. Dinner - 6:30 p.m. General Meeting - 7 p.m. R.S.V.P. no later than Tuesday, February 6th to Nancy Harvey (626) or at NHarvey440@aol.com Please leave your name and how many people in your party to Temecula, California, West on Rancho California Road, Left at First Light (Front Street & Jefferson) South to Old Town Front Street, Suite 113, Temecula, CA. Located across from Post Office on same side of Front St. My word for the New Year is positive! Why?, because that s exactly how I feel about what s before us as a Region. (I m not disheartened even though my first walk on New Year s Day landed me in the emergency room with a fractured heel). It s OK and I m OK. What isn t so great is my temperament, but I m working on it. The convention went well. The host hotel did a great job. The hottest topic was the committee restructure resolution. The board of directors in their (and I guess my) infinite wisdom undid what we had decided in August and is now allowing everyone to have a good think on it. Everything is to stay status quo and will be reconsidered at the next convention. The positive from all of this was great discussion and good ideas. The 2 nd hottest topic was the new judging system that will be implemented in Breeding and In hand classes at this time will be scored numerically. The horses will be compared to a standard and no longer to one another. The hope is that this will boost participation and make exhibitors feel that they now have an even playing field. I can share with you first hand that the Education and Evaluation Committee is very hard at work developing a curriculum that will make the transition process easier for all our judges and exhibitors. We, as a region are beginning to accomplish big goals. When you reflect on our Arabian Horse Faire, The Community Shows, the youth group, The Equine Affaire and our Horse Show restructure. I feel extremely proud. AND this year will be even better! Region One begins 2007 with a Hunt Seat Equitation Clinic on January 20 th. It will be put on by the Youth and held in Temecula at Green Acres Ranch. The clinician is Diane Grod from Reno, NV. There will be 2 sessions. This first session is from 10-12, a youth meeting and lunch will be from 12-2 and the second session from 2-4. The purpose of this event is two fold. First, it s an opportunity for our youth to receive top-drawer instruction from Diane, who is highly respected in the Hunter division and is an R Judge in Hunter/Jumper. Second, it will bring our youth together, where they can get to know one another and hopefully have a great exchange of ideas. If you are a youth member or thinking of becoming a member please come enjoy lunch and attend the meeting. Hot on the heels of the clinic will be our participation in the Equine Affaire, a big event with tremendous exposure for Region One and the Arabian Horse. It really seemed like such a short rest. Here it is January; with the start of 2007 horse shows just a couple of weeks away. We are off and running! I wish the best to everyone in the New Year! See you in February, Margaret Rich

7 A Message From Our Youth Director I have been really busy these past few months. In September, my mother and I volunteered at the AHA Region Championship Competitive Trail Ride in Ramona. We came down a very narrow road into a valley. There were a lot of cows and wild turkeys. For this event there are two judges, one judges the horse, and the other judges the rider. I weighed the rider and their tack. This weighing helped categorize the rider, i.e., heavy weight or light weight. My mother helped take respirations at the checkpoints. I had fun camping and helping at this event. The youth director meeting was at US Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky in October. There were a lot of things that were discussed at this meeting delegates, youth activities, fund raising, and membership. All of these issues will be discussed at the Region One Youth Meeting in January. I also attended the Rancho Club Youth meeting directed by Tami Martin. She taught everyone how to fix your hair for a show, and that was a lot of fun. The Arabian Affair was in November. That was great. About 1500 people came. There were demonstrations and special events. I helped at the Paint-A-Horse booth. Also, I have been organizing the clinic with Diane Grod and the Region One Youth Meeting. At this meeting the issues at convention will be discussed. We will also talk about youth judging, scholarships, delegates, and meet club youth advisors. There will be food and raffles. I hope that you can attend, meet other youth, and have a good time.

11 Arabian Horse Association Courts New Market at Major PGA Tournament In an effort to assert its credibility as an attractive partner for potential corporate sponsors, the Arabian Horse Association (AHA), headquartered in Aurora, Colo., has acquired a corporate tent on the coveted 18th green at the prestigious FBR Open Golf Tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz., from January 31-February 4, Dubbed The Greatest Show on Grass, the FBR Open attracts 540,000 international golf fans to this favorite winter playground which is also the site of the venerable Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show and the location of many notable Arabian horse breeding and training operations. In a never-before opportunity, AHA will host a corporate tent alongside Baird, Bank of America and other corporations, promoting the Arabian horse experience and lifestyle to visitors and guests. The philosophy behind this new approach to garnering sponsorship attention is best expressed by AHA Executive Vice President, Gary Zimmerman, who came from the corporate world to head up AHA in The FBR is a perfect venue in which to introduce people to icons of the Arabian horse industry, who, in many cases, are or have been corporate executives themselves. This environment will be exciting for those invited to the parties that are planned because they can experience the power, beauty, speed and intelligence of the Arabian horse up close and comprehend the caliber of product that is the Arabian horse lifestyle. By invitation only, qualified potential partners and business owners will attend evening events hosted by several Scottsdale farms at their spectacular facilities. Here is where each farm will showcase champion Arabian horses in their own unique style while guests enjoy wine, fine food and each other in the company of amicable Arabian horse enthusiasts. Major sponsors include IntraCoastal Title Agency, LLC., Dealer Direct Sport Chassis, Arabian Horse Source, Bank of America, Baron Realty, North Arabians, Brookville Arabians, Los Cedros and Shada Arabian Sanction and the Schall family. Others who have come on board to support this inaugural event include Bisch Training, Bestovall Arabians, DayDream Arabians, Foxfire Arabians, Toskhara Arabians and Zia Graphics. Supporters receive Corporate Village passes to the event as well as invitations to all evening parties. The AHA Corporate Village environment offers premium location, exposure and exclusivity and will be nestled on the lake that borders the 18th green. It s an opportune and relaxed environment in which to meet potential clients and indirectly promote the Arabian horse. The FBR Open sports the largest crowds on the PGA TOUR and has gained legendary status for being unlike any other golf tournament. Besides the exciting golf played by the likes of JB Holmes, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh on the challenging TPC Scottsdale course, this tournament attracts the biggest galleries on the tour. The Thunderbirds, official hosts of the Open since 1939, have turned an ordinary golf tournament into a community event and raised close to $46 million for Arizona charities. The 2007 edition will mark the 72nd playing of the Open, and the fourth as the FBR Open, making it one of the five oldest events on the PGA TOUR.
