1 Cambridge and District Riding Club April 2007 Spring Newsletter Ramblings from the Chair - March 2007 Do I dare believe that Spring has finally come? Typically it arrived just after the announcement that my horse s first even was cancelled due to waterlogged ground Given that she has been balloted out of her second entered event, my campaign in that direction is not going well! So instead I shall concentrate on Chieffie s mission to compete in the Riding Club Horse Trials Qualifier at Milton Keynes in June (more about that inside). Hopefully we can at last find good enough ground to canter on now, and so head for our first hunter trials. Who needs brakes anyway.! I trust that you are also plotting your programme for 2007; Where to go and the route to get there. I hope you have been inspired by the Riding club offerings of riding holidays and qualifiers. Tasters were on show at the party at Rampton on March 9 th, so I hope appetites have been whetted! It was great to see a good turnout for a jolly social evening, where the hardworking other-halves and behind the scenes crews could enjoy a function as much as the riders. The junior members were on fine form and made the most of the disco. If there is ever a contest for the most noise to be made from balloon popping, then CDRC are sure-fire winners! The next major event for the club is the Open Show at Cottenham on May the 6 th. A schedule is including in this mailing. I look forward to seeing lots of you there, and as always any volunteers to set up, help on the day, and clear away will be very gratefully received. By Karen Froud Trip to Badminton Horse Trials Huntingdon Riding Club are organising a coach to Badminton on Cross Country day, May 5 th and have opened up some spare places to other clubs. The coach will leave Huntingdon racecourse at 6am and costs 30 pr head ( 12 for under 12s) for travel and entry. Now is your chance, this competition is aimed at Novices and will be organised by CDRC for Area 7. We are hoping to have some training clinic beforehand to inspire you from a Freestyle to Music Guru! 2 Indoor Show Jumping 18 th February; Seniors This first event of the season was held at Keysoe EC. In the warm up class CDRC did very well with 6 riders in the line up of 8, putting us in an optimistic mood for the qualifying class. Unfortunately only 2 teams out of our 3 that were entered were able to compete. Morale dropped just a little during the day but we managed to finish 2 nd and 3 rd places. Well done to everybody who took part and roll on the Summer. By Judi Shaw A Grand Day Out! Milton Keynes, 10 th June 2007 Once again the Area Horse Trials Qualifiers will be held at Milton Keynes. As it s a long way to go, I propose we make a real day of it. Let s take family, friends, and supporters with us, nominate a CDRC HQ (whoever has the earliest start and/or the biggest lorry!). Take a good picnic, and party (regardless of the final result). In my book this is what team competition should be about. We do need to provide a number of fence judges for the XC phase to steward for half a day, but could still party with the teams for the other half. Are you game? Contact myself or Wendy Beal. Those members who would like to represent the club and ride as part of a team please contact me before 28 th June. The classes are: Novice 2 6 and 2 9 nil BSJA winnings, Intermediate 3 and 3 3 BSJA 175 Open 3 6 and 3 9 BSJA 600 Horses that have not been affiliated recently may have their winnings reduced by 50 per year, but please contact me for more details. Due to ever increasing problems of flu vacs I am now asking all team members to send me a photocopy of their horses vac certificates. This will avoid disappointment on the day for both rider and their team members. POPLAR PARK Saturday 26 th -Tuesday 29 th May 2007 The annual club excursion has been arranged over the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend to Poplar Park Equestrian centre nr Hollesley in the Rendlesham Forest nr Woodbridge, Suffolk. The village is in walking distance with a pub & shop & there is plenty to do in the area for non-riding family members who want to come along including walking the coastal path, cycling, catching the ferry across the Bawdsey river to Felixstowe & the towns of Woodbridge & Ipswich are a short drive away. It s an informal weekend where everybody does their own thing ie: hacking out on your own or in groups along sandy forest tracks or using the training facilities at the equestrian centre including the XC course (2ft-3 6) & the show jumps and arena s (when not in use for lessons). Stabling for horses is in one of the 3 stable yards mostly on straw which is included. You will need to bring your own hay, feed mucking out equipment tack etc There is a show at the centre on the Monday (schedules will be on horse dates website) with SJ Dressage, Showing & Gymkhana classes for all abilities which we can enter on the day (dressage entries in advance) B&B can be arranged in the main house & we have use of the bathroom & kitchen in the self-contained flat. There are WC/ Showers in the stable yard for those camping or sleeping in lorries (don t expect The Ritz!)

6 The cost is 20 per night per horse (including camping & use of the cross country course, show jumps etc) Accommodation in the house will be approx 20 per person per night (in addition to horse). A few of us may stay on and go to the Suffolk County show which is held nearby on Wednesday and Thursday so you can book any amount of extra nights if you wish to extend your stay. RINGSTEAD NR HUNSTANTON SUMMER HOLIDAYS 16 th 21st JULY & 10 th 15th SEPTEMBER 2007 This year we will again be holding two seaside holidays at Courtyard Farm, Ringstead, which is about three miles from Holme beach by the shortest route. The farm has numerous tracks and nearly all the field margins can be ridden on which gives tremendous scope for really good hacking, without road work, and also joins up with the Peddars Way. There are eight stables and three fields available to us and a bunk barn with two dormitories that holds twelve people, as well as having a kitchen communal room, showers and loos. We hire the whole place which means people can use all the facilities yet sleep in a tent, caravan or horsebox if they prefer, but the barn is available for bad weather, washing up etc. The cost is likely to be a maximum of 75 which includes a stable and /or field for a horse and barn or camping facilities. We have to divide the paddocks with electric fencing for safety. It will be cheaper for husbands, friends without horses. Straw is included in the cost, but it is necessary to bring hay and hard feed.

8 Dogs are welcome on the farm, but have to be kept on a lead/under control because of the game. They are allowed to run freely in the camping field but are not allowed in the barn. There are two kennels with runs for hire near the barn or they can sleep in your tents, lorries etc. Hopefully, it will also be possible to organise cross country training with Emily Lochore over Burnham Market cross country course if people are interested. Last year it cost 20 per session. If you would like to come please send a deposit of along with the booking form to Mary Owen. The places normally fill up fast so book early if you really want to come. Well here s your chance to shine! We would like to invite club members to design a new logo for CDRC which can be embroidered on poloshirts, sweartshirts, jackets/fleeces, baseball caps and saddlecloths which members can then order from Design-A-Stitch of Warboys. Dawn Warwick of Design-A-Stitch, suggest it is 9-11cm wide if on the left breast or can be larger if on the front or back of the sweatshirt and can involve a variety of colours but two coordinating or contrasting colours works particularly well. The winner will receive a prize of a personalised sweatshirt or poloshirt with the members name and the new logo embroidered on it.

We will be including a price list and order form in the next newsletter for members to order a range of merchandise with the new club logo embroidered on it. There will be various options with logo s on the front or back which can also be personalised with members names, horses names etc on saddlecloths, jackets etc. Design-A Stitch supply various cubs and business locally with clothing and saddlecloths hats etc. and can design a logo for your company or use your existing one.
