3 More Restricted Races, More Money Available for PA-Breds The Pennsylvania Breeding Fund Program has been extremely rewarding to participants since slots revenue kicked in in The program distributes more money, on a per foal basis, than nearly every other state-bred program, notes PHBA president Brian Sanfratello. And the program is only getting better. In 2014, the number of restricted races for registered PA-Breds at the three tracks PARX, Penn National and Presque Isle Downs is set to grow. More than 550 restricted races will be offered, with $14.5 million in restricted purses available to PA- Breds. That means more money going back to more people in Pennsylvania! It is estimated that the tracks will offer the following in purses for PA-Breds: $8.2-million at Penn National $4.4-million PARX Racing $2-million Presque Isle Downs The Stakes Schedule is expected to be posted soon and will exceed $1 million in purses for stakes caliber horses. The restricted race schedule is on top of the Awards Program, which pays Breeders, Owners and Stallion Awards. In 2013, those Awards added up to more than $10 million in additional funds! And what makes a PA-Bred worth even more to breeders? When sired by a registered Pennsylvania stallion! The Awards Program pays out a Breeder Award whenever a registered PA-Bred finishes first, second or third in any race in the state. For registered PA-Breds sired by registered Pennsylvania stallions, the Award (PA-sired Breeder Award) amounts to 30 percent of purse share earned. The Award (non-pa-sired Breeder Award) is 20 percent for those sired by out-of-state stallions. But there s more. The PA-Bred Owner Bonus program rewards the owners of registered PA-Breds finishing first, second and third in overnight races at PARX, Penn National and Presque Isle Downs. The total money to owners in 2013 in Owner Bonuses amounted to nearly $7 million in addition to the base purse, for races in Pennsylvania. It pays to breed PA-Breds, even more so when by Pennsylvania stallions, and race in Pennsylvania. The program pays back to those who support it, for years down the road. X 3

4 The Princess Gears Up for Her Senior Year This is senior year for Ed Stanco s beloved filly. Princess of Sylmar has turned 4, and this will likely be her last year of racing. It s like having kids in high school when they re playing sports and on the upswing, Stanco says. And then you get into the senior year, and they re going to graduate and go off to college. Stanco becomes emotional talking about it. He bred Princess of Sylmar, who was born at Betsy and Ronnie Houghton s Sylmar Farm near Christiana in Lancaster County, and he is managing partner of the group that owns her. She was recently named Pennsylvania Horse of the Year for As it sinks in, now that we re this far away from it, it s the kind of thing that, you know, it s forever, Stanco says. My family just can t believe it. When we talk about it, My God, she won the Kentucky Oaks. She won four Grade 1 s in a row... I get more emotional about this now than I did six months ago. Princess of Sylmar has been training at Palm Meadows in southern Florida since mid January, when she concluded her short vacation at WinStar Farm in Kentucky. She was shipped there after the Breeders Cup at Santa Anita Park, where she finished sixth, and last, in the Breeders Cup Distaff. That was a disappointing end to a year in which she won six of eight races (four of them Grade I) and earned $1.5 million. Stanco visited her when she arrived at Palm Meadows. And she looked good, Stanco says. Then I saw her March 5. She looked bigger, definitely stronger, incredibly happy. Her coat glistens red. Her disposition is as friendly as it s ever been. Her health is just tremendous... I know Todd is very happy with her. Stanco says that he and Todd Pletcher, her trainer, have targeted the ungraded Cat Cay Stakes on April 6 at Aqueduct for her 2014 debut. We wanted to take it easy bringing her back, Stanco says. Then the idea is to plan a campaign one race at a time. Races they d like to include are the Delaware Handicap at Delaware Park and Personal Ensign Invitational at Saratoga, Stanco says. The Breeders Cup will likely not be on the schedule. I don t foresee going back to Santa Anita, Stanco says. That track surface was rock-hard, and I would not want to expose her to that surface ever again. He says Princess of Sylmar will likely end her career in the fall at Belmont Park, and then be offered at auction. The plans have not been finalized, but right now our thought is to wrap it up after this year, Stanco says. We ve seen so many times that when fillies move into their 5-year-old season they lose interest in racing. She s so valuable, and the risk of racing her at 5 or breeding her himself is so great, he says, that he d rather sell her and let a bigger operation manage the breeding. As for her being named Pennsylvania Horse of the Year, he says: It s a big thrill for us. Even more than that, it s a huge thrill for Betsy and Ronnie at Sylmar Farm. We are very, very happy for them. We never expected to get this far up in our hobby. After she broke her maiden at Penn National, we ran her in an allowance race at Aqueduct. When Rajiv Maragh [her jockey] brought her back to the winner s circle, he looked down at me and said, You might have the fastest filly in Pennsylvania. And I thought, Wow, maybe we ll get an award someday in Pennsylvania. X 4 Tom Keyser

5 2013 Pennsylvania-Bred Champions The year 2013 was a tremendously successful one for Pennsylvania-bred runners. The Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association has named its champions and leaders for 2013, based upon the recommendation of its Awards Committee of Jane White (chair), Susan Meckling, Connie Nesteruk and John Benson. TWO-YEAR-OLD MALE STORMING INTI Ch.c., 2011, Stormy Atlantic Tarfaya, by Pulpit. Bred by Brushwood Stable. The chestnut colt who sold for six figures as a yearling came on with a rush in the fall of his juvenile season, winning three in a row, including Belmont Park s Awad Stakes on the turf and Gulfstream Park s off-the-turf Pulpit Stakes. From four starts, he earned $179,500. TWO-YEAR-OLD FILLY MISS BEHAVIOUR B.f., 2011, Jump Start Successful Romance, by Successful Appeal. Bred by Cal MacWilliam, Teitelbaum & Associates. Dazzling from the start, Miss Behaviour became a stakes winner in her second start in Monmouth Park s Sorority and a graded winner in her third outing in Belmont Park s Grade 2 Matron Stakes. From her sire Jump Start s first Pennsylvania-sired crop, she earned $242,000 at 2. THREE-YEAR-OLD MALE EDGE OF REALITY Dk.b./br.c., 2010, Lawyer Ron Our Nancy Lee, by Touch Gold. Bred by The Elkstone Group LLC. The biggest score of Edge of Reality s career was a hometown win in the $350,000 Smarty Jones Stakes-G3 at Parx Racing. His busy sophomore season, in which he won four of his 10 starts, included a trip to Saratoga, where he finished third in the Curlin Stakes. He earned $367,695 for the year. THREE-YEAR-OLD FILLY AND PENNSYLVANIA S HORSE OF THE YEAR PRINCESS OF SYLMAR Ch.f., 2010, Majestic Warrior Storm Dixie, by Catienus. Bred by Ed Stanco. Princess of Sylmar had one of the greatest years for a Pennsylvania-bred in history. A finalist for the Eclipse Awards, she won six of her eight starts and was second once, earning $1,539,000. She captured four Grade 1 races in a row: the Kentucky Oaks, Coaching Club American Oaks, Alabama and Beldame, the latter while defeating three-time Eclipse Award winner Royal Delta. With career earnings of $1,607,220, she ranks ninth on the list of all-time Pennsylvania-bred money earners. CHAMPION OLDER MALE & MALE TURF HORSE REAL SOLUTION B.h., 2009, Kitten s Joy Reachfortheheavens, by Pulpit. Bred by Kenneth L. Ramsey and Sarah K. Ramsey Real Solution had one win during the year, but it was gigantic the $1 million Arlington Million Stakes-G1. Third-place finishes in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Manhattan Handi cap and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational Stakes helped push his seasonal earnings to $675,500 from just five starts. CHAMPION OLDER FEMALE MOON PHILLY B.m., 2009, Malibu Moon Astor Place, by Deputy Minister. Bred by Ellen Dale Racing. Moon Philly started and ended her year in New York, but visited three states in 5

She won back-to-back stakes at Laurel in the winter when taking the Nellie Morse and Maryland Racing Media, and on a trip to Delaware Park captured the Justakiss Stakes. In 10 trips to the post at seven different tracks, she earned $163,259. CHAMPION FEMALE TURF EMOTIONAL KITTEN Ch.f., 2010, Kitten s Joy Silent Emotion, by Ghazi. Bred by Kenneth L. Ramsey and Sarah K. Ramsey. Seven times Emotional Kitten went to the post, six times she hit the board. Competing exclusively on the turf, she saved her biggest win for last when taking the Mrs. Revere Stakes-G2 at Churchill Downs in November. Her first stakes win came in Pimlico s Hilltop in May, and in between she was Grade 1-placed in the American Oaks and Del Mar Oaks. She banked $317,693 in earnings during the year. CHAMPION FEMALE SPRINTER SO MANY WAYS B.f., 2010, Sightseeing Happy Scene, by Dehere. Bred by John R. Penn and John C. Penn. So Many Ways, the state s champion 2-year-old filly of 2012, earned her second championship title by excelling at seven furlongs to capture the Grade 3 Eight Bells Stakes and the $400,000 Charles Town Oaks. Retired after her Charles Town score, she earned $409,348 for the year, and $717,148 lifetime. CHAMPION MALE SPRINTER ZEEWAT B.c., 2010, Harlan s Holiday Delizia, by Distant View. Bred by Derry Meeting Farm. Zeewat started off his year as a classic prospect after winning the California Derby in his sophomore debut. But sprinting became his game, which he proved dramatically during Breeders Cup weekend by taking Santa Anita s Damascus Stakes in a rapid 1:20.76 for seven furlongs. He concluded his season with a third in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes. CHAMPION STEEPLECHASE DIVINE FORTUNE Ch.g., 2003, Royal Anthem My Tombola, by Northern Fling. Bred by William L. Pape and Jonathan E. Sheppard. The accolades continued to flow for Divine Fortune as the chestnut gelding earned his first Eclipse Award as champion steeplechase and his third state-bred title in a row. Divine Fortune raced six times in Grade 1 company, winning the Grand National Hurdle Stakes and placing in the Calvin Houghland Iroquois and A.P. Smithwick Memorial. At age 10, he earned a career best $207,000 for the year. LEADING BREEDING FUND RECIPIENT (HORSE) DANI S STORM Ch.m., 2009, Changeintheweather Stormy Danyelle, by Storm Broker. Bred by Xanthus Farms. Dani s Storm led all Pennsylvania-breds in Breeding Fund money earned in 2013 with $131,750. She scored five victories for the year, all at Parx, and earned $60,491 in Breeders Awards, $20,164 in Stallion Awards and $51,096 in Owner Bonuses. CHAMPION STALLION REAL QUIET Real Quiet led all Pennsylvania stallions in 2013 with $88,865 in Stallion Awards. CHAMPION BROODMARE STORM DIXIE B.m., 2004, Catienus Golden Wave Band, by Dixieland Band. Owned by Ed Stanco Storm Dixie has four foals to date. Her first and only one to start is Pennsylvania-Bred Horse of the Year Princess of Sylmar, with 11 career starts, eight wins and earnings of $1.6 million. LEADING BREEDING FUND AWARD RECIPIENT XANTHUS FARMS Barbara Rickline s Xanthus Farm in Gettysburg led all Breeding Fund Recipients in 2013 with $179,138 in Breeders Awards. LEADING OVERALL BREEDER OF PENNSYLVANIA-BREDS GEORGE STRAWBRIDGE JR. Augustin Stable earns this award for the seventh year in a row as horses bred earned over $1.8 million. Major earners included Sir Ector ($175,630) and Kitten s Point ($149,135). 6

7 Pennsylvania Stallions Making News PIN OAK LANE SIRES DERBY CONTENDERS Any Given Saturday s son Hoppertunity bounded to second on the Kentucky Derby points leaderboard following his determined score in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on March 15. The Bob Baffert trainee, who has made all four of his starts this year, charged down the stretch to pull out the half length win. Campaigned by Karl Watson, Mike Pegram and Paul Weitman, Hoppertunity now has earnings of $410,720, of which $376,000 count towards a start in the Derby. In his stakes debut in February, Hoppertunity was fourth in the Risen Star Stakes-G2 after a wide trip. Any Given Saturday is the Mid-Atlantic region s leading sire of 2014, with more than $1.3 million in progeny earnings through March 21. Although he missed his scheduled appearance in the San Felipe Stakes-G2 in March, Offlee Wild s undefeated son Bayern may still be able to make the Kentucky Derby field should he show the form displayed in his 15-length allowance romp at Santa Anita in February. Baffert has not revealed where Kaleem Shah s dark bay colt may start next, but the Santa Anita Derby (April 5) or Arkansas Derby (April 12) are possibilities. The Louisiana Derby-G2 (March 29) could be the next spot for Rise Up, the son of the late Rockport Harbor who won four of six starts at 2, including the rich Delta Downs Jackpot-G3, which gave Paul and Andrena Van Doren s flashy colt 10 points on the Derby leaderboard. He broke poorly in his 2014 debut, the Risen Star, and wound up seventh, but has been training sharply for Tom Amoss, turning in a five-furlong bullet work at Fair Grounds on March 11. Hoppertunity (red and yellow silks) charged home for his first stakes win in Oaklawn Park s Grade 2 Rebel Stakes. Bayern impressed with his 15-length allowance score at Santa Anita in February and remains on the Derby trail after posting a solid work on March 20. UPTOWNCHARLYBROWN S FIRST FOAL Fantasy Lane Thoroughbreds welcomed the first foal by their stakes-winning stallion Uptowncharlybrown on Feb. 16 when the Dixie Union mare Glorious Union delivered a colt at Michael Jester s Penn Ridge Farm near Harrisburg, Pa. Uptowncharlybrown, a 7-year-old son of Limehouse who stands at Penn Ridge for $1,500, won Tampa Bay Downs Pasco Stakes by six lengths and was third in the Grade 2 Lexington Stakes over the all-weather surface, as well as third in the Sam F. Davis Stakes-G3. The half-brother to stakes-winning $218,280-earner Startjumpin Marnie, out of the Langfuhr mare La Iluminada, amassed $125,030 from 13 career starts. 7

8 PA-Breds: A Hot Commodity At Public Auction How much for that PA-bred in the field? For those who tested the public auction market in 2013 and early in 2014, impressive numbers have been flying around. A total of 37 Pennsylvania-breds (wean lings, yearlings, 2-year-olds, broodmares and horses of racing age) sold in 2013 for six figures. The average price of weanlings jumped 86.4 percent over 2012 (and with more sold), and the weanling median figure rose 80.8 percent. The increases far surpassed increases nationally. All together, nearly 350 state-bred horses sold for more than $13.6 million (for an average just under $40,000). The early auctions of 2014 reveal an even stronger market. Through the March sales in Kentucky and Florida, 57 Pennsylvania-breds (all ages) were sold for an average of $75,798. Seventeen brought six figures, topped by a Ghostzapper filly at the Ocala Breeders Sales Company s March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training on March 11. Bred by London Thoroughbred Services Ltd., the bay filly out of In a Haze, from the family of multiple Grade 1 winner Big Blue Kitten, was consigned by Niall Brennan Stables and sold to Michael Lund Peterson for $420,000. As a yearling, she sold for $95,000 at the Keeneland September sale. Of the 10 Pennsylvania-breds sent through the ring at the OBS March sale, nine sold, eight for six figures. Realizing a final bid of $390,000 from Narvick International, agent, was a colt by Into Mischief out of Touch Me Babe (by E Dubai). Posting one of the fastest works at the under tack show (an eighth mile in 10 seconds flat), the colt was sold by Halcyon Hammock Farm, which purchased him for $175,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale. He was bred by Gerson Racing. The top-priced newly-turned yearling sold this year was Deborah Rush s Gio Ponti colt out of To the Brim at the Keeneland all ages sale the second week of January. The half-brother to recent stakes winnner Bold Curlin, sold by Rush s Two Sisters Farm through the consignment of Brookdale Sales, was purchased by Sam Romero for $200,000 (for more on the Two Sisters Farm operation, see the Feb. 21, 2014, PA Thoroughbred Report). Of the 10 Pennsylvania-breds to win stakes in 2014 to date, eight sold at public auction from a range of $30,000 (for current 3-year-old Elevated) to $425,000 (for multiple Grade 3 winner Falling Sky, who brought that price as a horse in training at Ocala in January 2013). Of the eight, seven brought six figures in the sales ring. The quality was evident in the ring, and has been proven on the race track. X 8
