1 For New Buyers & Owners How To Read A Race Record and Interpret Pedigree Notes When you see a complete race record written in the format a/b(c-d-e)f-g,$h the numbers correspond to (a) number of years raced, (b) number of races, (c) number of first place finishes, (d) number of second place finishes, (e) number of third place finishes, (f) number of stakes wins, (g) number of stakes placings which means running 2nd or 3rd in a stake race, and (h) the horse's lifetime earnings. For example a race record that reads 3/10(3-4-1)1-2, $28,943, would translate to: "in 3 years of racing, the horse raced 10 times with 3 first places, 4 second places, 1 third place. Out of these races, 1 was a stakes win, and 2 races were stakes placed finishes, and he won a total of $28,943. Horses' names that are printed in BOLD ALL CAPS indicate they are stakes winners. Horse who are stakes placed will have their names in Bold Lower Case. After 1995, this "black type" became exclusive for horses who won or placed in stakes races with purses of $20,000 or greater. An asterisk before a horse's name indicates the horse was imported. 64

2 Texas Arabian Breeders Association & History of the TABA Sales The Original Racehorse - The Arabian Horse The Arabian horse dates back to the time of the Egyptian pharaohs. Their roots in present-day horse racing can be found in the foundation sires of today's thoroughbred, most notably the Godolphin Arabian. The "original racehorse," the Arabian horse,is the focus of this fifth Annual Arabian Racehorse Auction offered to the public by the Texas Arabian Breeders Association (TABA). The Texas Arabian Breeders Association Organized in part to help assure Arabian horses their rightful place in Texas horse racing, the Texas Arabian Breeders Association was formed in 1988, led by long-time Polish Arabian horse breeder, Joe Cassel. Many of those making up the first TABA Board of Governors had made certain that the Texas Racing Act of 1987 included Arabian horses as a racing breed of horse, along with the thoroughbred and quarter horse. This legislation guaranteed these racing breeds the right to race on all Texas pari-mutuel horse racing tracks. It is because of these early TABA board members and their foresight that Texas is the only state to offer Arabians this guarantee. Although Arabians race across the U.S. and abroad, it is Texas where Arabians enjoy year around racing opportunities at all Texas horse racing tracks including the three Class I racetracks of Sam Houston Race Park, Retama Park and Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie. TABA's main job as an organization is to act as the liaison between the Texas Racing Commission, the racetracks and the other racing breed organizations. No less important, is TABA's job of managing and promoting the Texas-Bred Accredited program, which has proven very lucrative for breeders and owners alike. 3 In keeping with the responsibility of promoting the accredited program, TABA also promotes Texas Arabian horse racing itself. This commitment is clearly illustrated in the story behind the Annual TABA Arabian Racehorse Auction. The History of the TABA Arabian Racehorse Auction The first annual TABA Racehorse Auction began in 1997 on a frigidly, cold, cloudy December day under tents in the infield at Sam Houston Race Park in Houston. Texas. Amazingly, given the weather conditions and the fact this was the first attempt of a nonprofit organization to hold an Arabian racehorse auction, buyers did show up and bid on the 36 horses offered for sale. Twentythree lots sold for an average price of $2,093. There had not been an established Arabian racehorse auction since the famous auction house, Sotheby's, held two, followed by a private company, Equest, in the early 1990's. The market was hot with several horses selling in the 6 figures, but by the mid-90's it had cooled and so had the auctions. It was in 1997, when TABA began its auction after recognizing the need for an annual venue where owners and breeders could sell their horses with minimum financial risk and where first-time owners could be introduced to Arabian racing for a fair price. The Success Stories The greatest success of the 1997 auction was to bring in new and first-time owners, which increased the numbers of Arabians racing in Texas. That translated into fuller fields and more races. All of TABA's auctions have produced good, and even some great, racehorses. A lot were winners, several were stakes winners and Darley nominees. In each auction, many horses made back their new owners' money and then some. The Darley Awards are the Arabian racehorse industry's highest honor akin to the thoroughbred racing industry's Eclipse Awards. The Darley's are held annually rotating between Los Alamitos Racecourse in California, Delaware Park in Delaware and Sam Houston Race Park in Texas. The latest TABA Auction Darley nominee is Royal Fanfare, nominated in 2002 and She is a royally bred mare by Monarch AH out of *Fantos by *Bandos, and has earned nearly $200,000 for her owners who purchased her at a previous TABA sale. 66

4 Purses have risen dramatically since the early days of U.S. Arabian horse racing, especially in Delaware Park where in 2002 the average overnight purse was $9,904. A large part of the increase in Delaware purses was the introduction of slot machines at the racetrack, which contributes to the horsemen's purse account. In other states, including Texas, legislators are looking into the viability of introducing legislation that allows this same kind of additional revenue stream to be added at horse and dog racing facilities. Texas Arabian horses run for overnight purses ranging from $3,000 to $6000. Next year, TABA will host the Jewels of the East Futurities, two races with estimated purses of $50,000 each. These stakes compliment Texas regular stakes schedule of stakes from $10,000 to estimated $25,000. The highest purse for a stake race in 2003 was held at Delaware Park, the $175,000 UAE Racing and Equestrian Federation Stakes, a Grade I stakes race. Overall, in the US, Arabians raced for over $4,500,000 in purse money in 2003 and with approximately 646 Arabians racing this year, this translates into fairly good odds for an owner to earn money racing Arabians. The Fundamentals The principal idea behind the TABA Auction was a sale that not only was consignor friendly, but buyer friendly as well. Lower consignment costs meant prices were more in line with the going market. Because TABA is an all-volunteer organization, TABA could organize a sale for far less money than a private entity. TABA promotes the auction in the U.S. via racing, show and endurance publications, Arabian racing club newsletters and the TABA website. It promotes the auction worldwide in publications, its website and . For this first time, in addition to phone bids, TABA will post all horses consigned on its website and accept sealed bids to be opened at auction time from anyone wishing to participate but unable to attend the auction.
