3 Dear Members, President s Message It s hard to believe another quarter has past. I hope that this June issue finds your spring calves on the ground, healthy and growing! It occurs to me that as I write this article that I say many of the same things article after article sometimes in better ways than others. I think that there ought to be new things to say but then I think about how we run our families equipment business, each month we have meetings with our various department managers and we talk about the same things: 1. We compare our results to our goals. 2. We talk about the effectiveness of our marketing program. 3. We evaluate the quality of our inventory. 4. We discuss our profit margins. We discuss these and a host of other issues every month. We use the same agenda. We do this because we know that these items will determine our success or failure in business. I think that this relates to the White Park business as well. For most of us the cattle business is a secondary source of income or some of us may look at our cattle as a hobby but that does not mean that we should not work to produce the best results that we can from the cattle we love. 1. Do you have goals for your cattle business? 2. How are you going to market your cattle? Why should someone buy our breed, or your cattle rather than the ones down the road? 3. Do you evaluate the quality of your inventory? i.e. Birth weights, weaning weights, yearling weights? Calving ease, disposition, conformation, health history? The more information you can provide to a potential buyer the higher the value of your cattle. 4. Do you evaluate the market value of your cattle? My guess is that you breed White Park cattle because there was something about the cattle you like. You did not buy them because they were the cheapest cattle you could find! If someone comes to me looking for cheap cattle I can t help them. Our customers come to us for various reasons all of which make our breeding cattle more valuable than the cattle at the sale barn. We are fortunate because our cattle deliver a complete package. They have great commercial value as our carcass data shows time after time. They also have many traits that the part-timer is looking for, they have a

4 President s Message con t... great disposition, they are easy calving, they are great mothers, they are healthy and they are CUTE! Set some goals for your cattle operations, keep good records, work hard to develop a premium market and constantly evaluate your program. The cattle business may evolve but these business practices will not. On another note show season is just around the corner. Going to shows has helped me tremendously in evaluating my cattle. You can compare the size and conformation of you calves in the pasture but putting them in the show ring allows you to evaluate your cattle compared to others. Showing is both a marketing and management tool. You don t have to even listen to the judge, be your own judge compare them and see if someone else has more of what YOU want. I hope to see you at a White Park event this year, Glenn T Wenger, President WICKLUND FARMS American British White Park Helix Rd Tomah, WI

15 Breeders Corner... This is a great tip from ABWPA member and breeder Mr. Dale Wicklund, Tomah, Washington. Mr. Wicklund over the years has developed his own method of keeping readable numbers on ear tags without spending lots of money on pre-numbered tags. Normally, the marking pen ink fades and the numbers become unreadable after a few months. Mr. Wicklund s suggestion is the take a normal blank ear tag, and a wood burning set where he then melts the year letter, herd letter and animal number on the X-large white tag. Mr Wicklund suggests to be sure not to burn the letters to deep into the tag or the ink will run through to the other side. Once the letters are burned then apply the ink with a good wet tip marker, by slowly following the groove in the letters allowing the ink to get to the bottom of the groove, don t press to hard or a flow of ink will discharge from the pen. Mr. Wicklund admits if you do make a mess with to much ink just remember in a few months everything but what is in the letters will be worn off and the tag will be just fine. If you would like to try this technique and need more directions give Mr. Wicklund a ring.

Hello, from the Office. I just wanted to remind everyone to be sure to submit their registrations early if you are needing them for show purposes. It is taking the full 2 weeks for processing of the registrations since this is the busy time of year and everyone is needing them to enter the cattle shows coming up. In May we started the American British White Park E- News, the E-News was sent out to all of our members with s listed on their membership information. We had several that were undeliverable due to incorrect addresses or rejected. If you are one that was rejected you might want to add us to your acceptable address information. The will be sent from office@whitecattle.org address if you would like to fix your spam protection to allow our E-News to be accepted. If you did not receive the E-News and would like to send us your address and we will add you to the list. We have another E-News scheduled for July. Sherry Parks ABWPA Executive Secretary
