PLEASE NOTE The Gates will be open daily from 7am to 9pm, except Monday, closing time will be 6pm. The Society shall not be responsible in any way for any article or animal lost or stolen on the fairgrounds, nor shall it be responsible for any damage caused by an accident on the fairgrounds. An ample police force will be on duty day and night during the exhibition. Public telephones will also be available. Visitors are assured of finding, on the grounds, everything necessary for their comfort and enjoyment. No unauthorized pets/animals are permitted on the fairgrounds. It is strictly prohibited to operate golf carts, ATV s and 4 wheelers on the fairgrounds. Only those authorized and insured by the Agricultural Society are permitted. No smoking: Smoking in any building on the fairgrounds is strictly prohibited. 1

5 RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. A Brome County Agricultural Society exhibitor fee entitles the holder to exhibit in all sectors of the fair. 2. All exhibitors paying the $25 exhibitor fee will be entitled to admission as follows: one four-day pass, one parking pass if available. 3. Exhibitors will receive the following additional 4-day passes: Cattle & horses- one per three head Sheep & goats- one per flock or herd of six A max of 3 additional 4-day passes may be given per exhibitor 4. We reserve the right to charge a 10$ administration fee for entry submitted after August 10 th. 5. Exhibitors Certificate of Insurance (minimum $1,000,000) must accompany entry forms. 6. Persons intending to compete at Brome Fair must submit the entry form, required funds, and insurance certificate (if applicable), to the Brome County Agricultural Society office to the attention of the administration by August 10th before 8 p.m. The post mark will not be considered. Post dated cheques are not accepted. Any incomplete entry can be refused by the board of directors. 7. Every exhibitor of the Society will be liable to take the following oath if required by any member of the Society: I do solemnly swear that all animals and/or articles exhibited by me are either my own or made or acquired by me according to the rules of this Society, so help me God. 8. No article or animal shall be entered for more than one premium in the same year, except for horse performance classes, special prizes or as provided for in herd and group classes. 9. No competitor shall be entitled to more than one premium in the same class unless otherwise stated. 10. Any member exhibiting an article for premium contrary to the rules of the Society will forfeit all prizes awarded him that year. 11. All animals and articles entered for competition shall be ticketed and numbered and no person shall in any way interfere with the judges in the execution of their duties. 3

6 12. All prize ribbons which have been awarded by the judges must be displayed during the fair. Any infraction of this rule will ensure forfeiture of any premium awarded. 13. Any member of the Society found guilty of loaning or otherwise giving use of a Society badge to another person, shall forfeit all premiums obtained by him during the year. 14. Any and all questions of dispute that may arise shall be referred to the president and administration of the Society. 15. Any exhibitor lodging a protest must make it in writing, and it must be delivered to the president or the administration within three hours of the cause of protest. This must be accompanied by a deposit of $30 in cash. If such protest is sustained, the deposit will be returned; if not, it will be forfeited to the Society. 16. The Society will not be liable for any bills or accounts for any prizes won that are not presented or sent to the administration within two months from the close of the year, 31st October, in which said accounts become due or said prizes won. 17. In the event of the Society having not enough funds to pay the prizes in full, the Directors reserve the right to deduct the necessary percentage. 18. All trophies must be returned to the fairgrounds office not later than August 10th, before 8:00 p.m. and must be engraved and cleaned, ready for display. Presentations will be made immediately after judging is completed. 19. House trailers: Parking will be reserved for the exhibitor s house trailer, but it must have the sanitary implements. All trailers/campers must have a functional fire extinguisher. In order to defray costs, a rental fee of $50 per camper will be required. Reservation and payment must be made with the entry form before 8:00 p.m. August 10th. 20. All animals must remain on the fairgrounds from Friday to Monday inclusive. All animals must remain in stalls until 5:00 p.m. Monday. Any exhibitor loading animals before 5:00 p.m. will forfeit any prize money, entry fees and will not be allowed to return for the following two (2) Fairs. 21. Brome County Agricultural Society Inc. membership is $25 due each year at the annual meeting. The next annual meeting will be Saturday, December 8th,

7 RULES FOR THE JUDGES 1. Judges shall be appointed by the officers and directors of the Society. 2. No person shall be allowed to act as judge who is in any way connected with the exhibit to be examined. 3. Judges are expected, in the execution of their duties, to be careful to act with the most rigid impartiality and to respect scheduled times and keep classes running accordingly. 4. Judges shall award premiums to the best manufactured article of its kind. 5. Judges shall, in awarding premiums on bulls, cows and heifers, have reference to the quality of such animals for improving stock and/or for dairy purposes. 6. Should there be one exhibit in a class or section; judges can use their own discretion as to awarding a premium. In all cases where they do not think the exhibit worthy, they can withhold the premium. Judges shall in no case award a prize unless they consider the exhibit actually worthy of such a premium. 7. Ownership of an exhibit shall not be in evidence during judging. 8. Any person not authorized to do so; conversing with the judge while on duty or otherwise interfering will forfeit any right he may have for a prize. It shall be the duty of the judge to report to the administration, on handing in the books, any infringement of the rule. 9. Upon discovery of any fraud, deception, dishonest practice, or misrepresentation in regard to any exhibit, which may have influenced or been intended to influence the decision of the judge, the executive committee has the power to withhold payment of the prize awarded. 10. Any person who shall attempt to interfere with the judge in the performance of his duties, or shall afterwards, on the premises of the Society, use any abusive language to any judge in consequence of an award made by him, shall forfeit his right to any premium to which he might otherwise be entitled. Said person will also be excluded from exhibiting for one year thereafter. Judges are particularly requested to report any such breach of this rule 5

8 DAIRY CATTLE RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. All entry forms, applicable fees and certificate of insurance must be in the office of the administration by August 10th, before 8:00 p.m. Mandatory full ATQ # on entry form or animal will not be accepted. Entries received after this date will not be accepted. When stable accommodation is full, entries will be returned. 2. Maximum number of animals per exhibitor, per breed, is ten (10), calves included. 3. Substitutes: All substitute animals must be declared in writing by no later than 5 pm Wednesday before fair. Any substitutes made afterwards will not be recorded in the show catalogues. Only three (3) animals will be eligible for substitution. Substitute animals will be confirmed at the same time as registration certificates are checked. The total number of animals exhibited at fair cannot exceed the quantity entered, excluding substitutes. 4. All cattle to be on grounds no later than midnight on Thursday. All animals must remain in stalls until 5:00 p.m. Monday. 5. Registration certificates must accompany animals and will be checked Friday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. All exhibitors must be available for verification during these times. 6. Three (3) exhibitors and twenty-four (24) head per breed is required for judging. 7. Four (4) animals constitute a herd for parade trophy on Sunday. Exhibitors must parade or forfeit prize money. 8. Judging All Breeds Saturday, 10:00 am 9. Washing cattle Friday: 10:00 am Saturday: Any time No cattle washing anywhere except at wash rack. 10. No blocking chutes or fans will be allowed in the aisles behind cattle during the fair. 11. No wood chips or dirt allowed for bedding. Only straw or shavings may be used. Bedding must remain within designated floor markers. No Large Bales. 12. Tampering: Unnatural practices in fitting will not be tolerated and all cattle entered for competition shall be presented in the judging ring in their natural conformation and natural physical condition. 6

Breeding: In cases where doubt exists in the mind of the judge or official as to the breeding capability of an animal, the exhibitor may be required to furnish evidence to the satisfaction of the official concerned 14. Championship Ribbons -all breeds: All animals must have been shown in regular classes. 15. Code of ethics for dairy exhibitors: The following practices or procedures are considered unacceptable and defined as being unethical in the show ring of registered dairy cattle. In registering, all breeders and exhibitors are engaged in the respect and observance of the Code of Ethics. a) Misrepresenting the age of the animal for the class in which it is shown. b) Balancing the udder by any means other than by leaving naturally produced milk in any or all quarters. c) Treating or massaging any parts of the animal s body, particularly the udder, internally or externally with an irritant, counterirritant, or other substances, to temporarily improve conformation or produce unnatural animation. d) Minimizing the effects of cramp or lameness by feeding or injecting drugs. e) Surgery of any kind performed to change the natural contour of appearance of the animal s body, hide or hair. Not included is the removal of warts, teats, and horns, clipping and dressing the hair and trimming of hooves. f) Insertion of foreign material under the skin. g) Criticizing or interfering with the judge, show management or other exhibitors while in the show ring, or other conduct detrimental to the breed or show. 16. Production records: Not required. 17. All exhibits must be registered in the name of the exhibitor in accordance with the by-laws of their respective association. The certificate of registration must state that the animal is purebred or at least 75% of purebred inheritance. All exhibits must be legibly tattooed (if applicable). 18. Competition for Herdsman Open to any exhibitor showing dairy cattle and exhibiting a minimum of six (6) animals. To be awarded to the herdsman or to the owner of the exhibit. Each animal in the group must have been exhibited in one of the classes for single animals. Only one animal from junior breeder group may be used in senior breeder group. 9

12 Best Bred & owned: The judge will choose a Best Bred & Owned animal in classes 1 to 7 and 9 to 16. An additional $40 will be given to each of these animals. Best Udder: There will not be Best Udder class, but the judge will choose a best udder in classes 9 to 16. Ribbon only. Ayrshire Total performance competition: The plaques or ribbons are donated by the National Bank of Canada. A plaque or ribbon will be awarded to the Ayrshire exhibitor accumulating the most points, calculated using the following formula. Regulations: To be eligible, a cow must have been shown in an individual regular class with a placing among the top three. Also, the cow must be registered in a recognized milk control program and be classified. Points 1. Production The combined milk, fat and protein M.C.R. for the best official record for 305 days. 3. Classification The points obtained by the time of the last judgement multiplied by two. Restraint of bulls: Any bull exceeding twelve months of age must be restrained using a ring or humbug. This rule applies at any and all times this animal is being handled on the grounds. Failure to comply with this rule will result in instructions from the Board of Directors to remove the animal from the show and possibly from the premises 13. Definitions 12

15 a) An exhibit is a unit of livestock qualifying for any entry into a class as specified in the classifications. All registered animals, whether owned by one person or by more than one person, individually or jointly, are considered to be the production of one farm or breeding unit on which they are maintained. b) An exhibitor is any breeder or firm which presents animals or farm produce for official placing by a judge at the time specified for judging. c) In each classification where the same or common interests are involved in more than one breeding operation such operations are considered as one Breeding unit. In all cases where there is any doubt that more than one breeding unit exists, the interpretation shall be that only one breeding unit exists. The responsibility of proof of separation of breeding units shall rest with the exhibitors. d) Purebred means an animal of the breed as determined by the by-laws of an association authorized to register animals of that breed. 14. Checking of exhibits: Checking of exhibits is the responsibility of the fair committee. The committee must exclude ineligible animals and those not positively identified before judging. 15. Split classes: For all species, classes may be split at the discretion of the fair committee. Each split class is considered a separate class by definition. 16. Number of exhibits per breeding unit: All exhibits must be owned by and registered as purebred in the name of the exhibitor. Note exceptions in the Get of Sire and Breeder s Herd classes. There is no restriction on multiple exhibits in any classes excluding the Breeder s Herd and Get of Sire class. 17. The maximum number of animals per exhibitor for all beef breeds is fourteen (14), calves included. BCAS reserves the rights to reduce the number of entries in order to accommodate all the breeds in the barn space allotted. 18. Animal registration: All animals being shown in single classes must be registered as purebred by the closing date of entries, except calves under three months of age, which must be properly tattooed in two year and mature cow/calf classes. All animals must be legibly tattooed. Calves over three months of age must be registered unless the by-laws of an association states that an animal cannot be registered until older. 19. Only one camping trailer allowed per exhibitor or breed entered by the exhibitor. 20. Competition for Herdsperson Open to any exhibitor showing beef cattle and exhibiting a minimum of six animals. To be awarded to the herdsperson or to the owner of the exhibit. ($40 $30 $20 $10). One $50.00 award per breed will be allotted based on following criteria. 13

Bedding: One (1) bag of shavings or straw bale per head present, up to a maximum of ten (10), will be supplied to beef exhibitors upon their arrival. 20 Goats RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. The total number of animals exhibited at fair cannot exceed the quantity entered, excluding substitutes. 7. Entry forms including applicable fees and certificate of insurance must be in the office of the administration by August 10 th, before 8:00 p.m. The post mark is not considered. 8. A $25 exhibitor s fee must accompany each entry form plus $20 entry fee per animal. The $20 entry fee per animal will be refunded when prize money is paid, if animal shows on judging day. 9. All goats to be on grounds no later than midnight on Thursday. All animals must remain in stalls until 5:00 p.m. Monday. 10. At least fifty percent to be allotted for general neatness of the exhibit and for grooming of the goats. 26 HORSES RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. Provincial Show: a) While Brome Fair remains open to residents from any province, Quebec residents exhibiting in these sections will also be competing in the Provincial Championships. b) There must be a minimum of 5 animals competing for each Championship class to maintain Provincial status. (Compensation money) 2. All entry forms, applicable fees and certificate of insurance must be in the office of the administration before 8pm, August 10 th. Entries received after this date will not be accepted and the post mark will not be taken into consideration. When stable accommodation is full, entries will be refused, and entry fees will be returned. 3. A $25 exhibitor fee must accompany each entry form 4. On making entries, the owner s name and address in full, the name of the animal (if named) and the age should be given. A copy of the registration form must accompany entry form for all registered horses. 5. ALL HORSES AND PONIES MUST HAVE A CLEAR COGGINS TEST FOR THE CURRENT YEAR OF FAIR. It is not necessary to mail it with the entry form. The original certificate must accompany the animal on arrival at the grounds. No horse will be stabled without certificate. 6. No tie out allowed. 7. Horse exhibitors are to enter at gate C and proceed to the horse committee office located in the stabling area. Horses are not to be unloaded until registration papers and proof of Coggins test is verified. 8. Arrival and Departure a) Riding and Driving: Any exhibitor competing in a riding or driving class must be on fairgrounds by 9:00 p.m. Thursday. They may not leave until 5:00 p.m. Monday b) Halter: Exhibitors in sections & sections , competing solely in halter classes must arrive Thursday morning between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. They are required to leave the same day after 4:00 p.m. Light horses & ponies competing solely in halter classes may be stabled in the race horse paddocks on Wednesday night if all other stabling is assigned for the weekend (exhibitors must indicate on their entry form if they wish to have stabling Wednesday night). 24

27 9. All stalls must be cleaned by 5:00 p.m. Monday, leaving the manure in the alley. Any exhibitor not leaving the stall clean will forfeit their prize money. 10. No addition to classes will be allowed after August 10 th. 11. If only one animal is exhibited in a class or section, the judge can use his own discretion as to awarding a premium. He shall in no case award a prize unless he considers the exhibit actually worthy of such a premium. 12. Registration papers must be shown with the horse before the judging. Current year foals that are not fully registered must have a Canadian National Livestock record pre-registration. Registered horses may not compete in Grade classes. All registered breeding classes must be registered with Canadian Livestock Records, Ottawa. 13. Brood mares must show evidence of being in foal or have raised a foal during the current year. The exhibitor is required to show the foal at foot or registration certificate of the foal must be provided if the foal is not shown. 14. Pairs of horses can be shown both in pairs and single. The single horse and the pair must be those entered and owned by the exhibitor. 15. Any person showing registered animals as grade will be disqualified. All draft horse geldings are to be shown as grade animals. 16. All classes with age restrictions must be substantiated by showing proof of age. A photocopy of their Medicare card must be submitted with the entry form. All ages are to be as of January 1 st of the year of the fair. 17. Exhibitors must dress appropriately for all horse classes & the parade. 18. Exhibitors are not permitted to address the judge. If an exhibitor feels there is a problem, he may approach the ringmaster or the show manager. 19. Horses that are ridden or driven during the competition must be ridden or driven in Sunday s parade, not paraded on halter, or exhibitors will forfeit their prize money. 20. All horses must be washed at the wash stand. No washing near the barns. 21. All stalls are to be kept clean and tidy at all times. The horse committees reserve the right to verify. 22. All camping areas must be kept neat and tidy. 23. Definitions: a) An exhibit shall be interpreted as follows: one or more units of livestock qualifying for any entry into a class as specified in the classifications. All registered animals, whether owned by one person or by more than one person, individually or jointly, are considered to be the production of one farm or breeding unit on which they are maintained. 25

28 b) An exhibitor is any breeder or firm which presents animals or farm produce for official placing by a judge at the time specified for judging. c) In each classification where the same or common interests are involved in more than one breeding operation such operations are considered as one breeding unit. In all cases where there is any doubt that more than one breeding unit exists, the interpretation shall be that only one breeding unit exists. The responsibility of proof of separation of breeding units shall rest with the exhibitors. d) Purebred means an animal of the breed as determined by the by-laws of an association authorized to register animals of that breed 24. Checking of exhibits is the responsibility of the fair committee. They will exclude ineligible animals and those not positively identified before judging. 25. Split classes. For all species, classes may be split at the discretion of the judge when the number of exhibits is deemed excessive. The two sections will still be viewed as one single class. 26. Animal registration. All exhibits must be owned by and registered as purebred in the name of the exhibitor. Note exception in the Get-of-Sire class. Registration of each heavy horse must accompany the entry, or, in the case of spring and summer foals, a breeding certificate must be available. 27. No smoking. Smoking in the horse barns is strictly prohibited. 28. No motorized vehicles, stock or flatbed trailers are permitted to be parked between the horse barns. Parking will be available in the back. 29.
