3 WELCOME From the Minister for Sport, Tourism and Major Events John Eren The Victorian Government is proud to support the 2017 National Dressage Championships, the latest addition to our State s major events calendar that s the envy of the world. Victoria lives and breathes sport. We re home to some of the biggest events in the world including the Australian Show Jumping Championships, Saddleworld Melbourne International and Melbourne s famous Spring Racing Carnival. We re delighted to stage the 2017 Martin Collins Australian Dressage Championships at the Boneo Park Equestrian Centre showcasing world class talent at one of our state s top sporting venues. The event not only provides the perfect opportunity for everyone to enjoy some great competition but also a range of fun activities in between competition. The Victorian Government is proud to have provided support to Boneo Park Equestrian through the Significant Sporting Events Program to stage this fantastic event. Events like these are also a great opportunity to showcase our sports facilities, talent and regions to even more people around the world. Significant events not only build on our reputation as the sporting capital of the world but further our standing as a multicultural, inclusive and liveable state. Showcasing the best of sport in our own backyard inspires our kids to emulate their heroes, join a club, get active and play the sport they love. Hosting a major event like this is also great for our visitor economy creating jobs for Victorians and boosting local businesses. There s an enviable array of world renowned restaurants, stunning parks and open spaces, museums, galleries and family-friendly beaches to enjoy. 4 WELCOME to the 2017 Martin Collins Australian Dressage Championships! Boneo Park warmly welcomes you to the 2017 Martin Collins Australian Dressage Championships. For our small team at Boneo Park, who started the business 10 years ago, to have the opportunity to run an Australian Championship event is a great honour. We must acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our entire team in making this possible, both our permanent staff and event team. What an honour to have a line up of competitors from every state in Australia, making the 2017 Australian Dressage Championships a truly a National event. It is particularly exciting to see big teams of competitors from Tasmania and South Australia and we cannot forget our two New Zealand entrants in the International Grand Prix class. Thank you for making the trip to Boneo Park. It has been wonderful to see the buzz around Victorian dressage events over the last couple of months with competitors eager to obtain qualification scores for this prestigious event. It is positive for the whole dressage community and we thank Equestrian Australia, Equestrian Victoria and the Victorian State Government for their support. What a thrill to have Olympic silver medalist Spencer Wilton here at Boneo Park as well as upcoming Australian star Simone Pearce who has travelled all the way from Denmark. It has been a delight to work with the professional Dressage Masterclass team to put together the program and we have no doubt that everyone is going to love the Masterclasses planned for the event. Our sponsors are fundamental in helping cover the costs of putting on such an event and there have been so many companies and individuals who have supported us, for this we say a very large thank you! 22 SIMONE PEARCE (AUS) The Young Horse Specialist! Simone is an Australian representative rider based at Helgstrand Dressage in Denmark. For the past 7 years she has been training and competing in Germany, Holland and now Denmark. At the 2017 FEI World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses at Ermelo in the Netherlands, Simone marked a watershed moment for Australian dressage when she became the first Australian rider to win a qualifying test at the prestigious event with Feodoro in the six-year-old class. The pair later went on to finish 7 th in the final, with Simone also finished 4 th in the five-year-old final. Having achieved over 70% in Grand Prix, Simone already has a pre-qualification score required for WEG Simone will be working with Dressage Masterclass on future projects, so stayed tuned for exciting announcements! 23 SPENCER WILTON (UK) Olympic Silver Medallist & FEI Ranked Top Ten Born in 1973 and raised in Suffolk, Spencer was a keen member of the Essex and Suffolk Pony Club and represented GB as an individual at the Pony European Eventing Championships. He later switched to Dressage, winning his first National title in In 2006 he made his first international debut and to date, Spencer has now won thirteen National titles. Image by Leslie Bliss Spencer and Jen Goodman s Super Nova II were selected to represent Great Britain at the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and alongside team mates, Carl Hester, Fiona Bigwood and Charlotte Dujardin, they made the nation proud as they brought home the Team Silver Medal; an astonishing achievement and a dream realised for Spencer and the talented Super Nova. 29 JILLI COBCROFT TRIBUTE Jilli Cobcroft has had an amazing journey with horses! For Jilli it started at the young age of 5 when she met a little taffy pony at Balwyn Sanctuary. She was hooked on horses from then on. Over the years Jilli and her husband Brien have had many great horses but two of Jilli s most memorable were Nutcracker and Hutana. Nutcracker had a wonderful bond with Jilli and together as a partnership they went on to win Jilli s first big Hack Championship at the Sydney Royal, also taking the prestigious honour of being the most successful exhibitor. This was dear to Jilli s heart as Nutcracker was one of the first thoroughbreds to win at a major show. Until this time thoroughbreds were not that popular. How times change, as they became very successful and popular show horses! Nutcracker was not only excellent in the show ring, he was also good at dressage where the passion began! Jilli s second most memorable horse was a New Zealand bred horse called Hutana. He was bred by the same sire as Ross and Ann Fields two famous horses Bailiwick and Mazeppa. Jilli and Hutana s partnership began when none of the jockeys could ride him! He was so wicked but had great balance and courage which attracted Brien to take over the ride as an eventer. Brien and Hutana then when onto the Mexico Olympics where Brien had 2 horses. As time went on Jilli gave her horses to Brien whilst she focused on raising the children. It was at this time she was attracted to dressage judging, a passion that would last a life time. Her first judging appointment was at the very young age of 19 in Tasmania. Jilli still had a passion for showing so she also judged many classes in this discipline ranging from thoroughbreds to Hacks to ponies to the Garryowen. In fact, Jilli gave Glenn Fryer his first Open Gentleman Rider at the Melbourne Show. In those days you had to go overseas to become accredited as a judge so Jilli was exposed to seeing the top horses in the world and she became fascinated with classical training. As the horses were not always as talented as today, the training was very important. Jilli was the first International Judge for Eventing and one of the first for dressage, reaching 4-star level. She recalls Reine Klinke once telling her she should judge as she believed, that her competitors would be her best critics. Jilli has had a wonderful journey with dressage judging with some interesting overseas appointments. This has allowed her to meet some fascinating people. Jilli reflects on her time, that sport is such an equaliser, especially in the eventing world! Martin Collins Australian Dressage Championships / Page 28 --

30 If there was one disappointment it was not being able to ride with Princess Anne when she came to Australia with the honours going to Brien as Jilli was pregnant at the time. Jilli has an ever-burning passion for dressage and like many that have helped organise this wonderful event, her vision is to see Australia reach the top level and be capable of winning medals in Championships in Europe. Jilli can t wait for the day when the young riders come through the ranks and make a name for themselves and Australia on the world stage! Jilli s other passion for the future is riding ponies!! She would love to see them being ridden by children as they do in Europe. Jilli now can sit back and enjoy the horses, hoping that she has contributed something to the sport that she loves! Jilli has had a thoroughly fantastic journey! What those close to Jilli would say, is what a wonderful judge and mentor she has been to so many over the years. 31 MARY HANNA TRIBUTE Mary Hanna s status as one of the most successful riders in the history of Australian dressage is undisputed. Over her long career Mary has represented her country in five Olympic Games, four World Equestrian Games, six World Cup Finals and two Open European Championships and trained numerous horses to Grand Prix level but her competitive success, which has encouraged so many to follow in her footsteps, is only one facet of Mary s contribution to Australian dressage. Born into a horsey family, Mary was riding before she could walk. While her formative years as a competitor were in the sport of eventing, dressage became Mary s passion when the Danish stallion Kilof McOhl came into her life. At the time she was married to Danish-born rider Gert Donvig, who, classed as a professional, was unable to ride Kilof in the international Prix St George series. Mary took over just two weeks before, came second to Erica Taylor on Crown Law, and became hooked on dressage. The couple founded a pioneering Warmblood breeding programme importing Danish bloodlines to Australia in the shape of stallions Kilof McOhl, Granada and Valuta. They also imported ideas and knowledge from Europe sparked by Gert winning a training scholarship to train with Siegfried Bimbo Peilicke in Germany. Mary would follow him to Germany and Denmark. Despite Gert s tragic death in 1988 Mary continued the vision importing and training the influential stallions Wunder, Donnerheist and Rituel, who she rode to twelfth place at the World Breeding Championships for Young Horses in Ermelo, Holland. Later came Shiraz Black, ridden by Mary s daughter Gitte to win several Australian Young Horse Championships whose progeny are competing successfully today. Mary s life-long mission, now with the support of Rob Hanna who she married in 1990, has been to improve Dressage in Australia; the horses, the influences, the training and the opportunities. Mentoring and teaching so many of her own her own students and bringing over some of the world s top trainers; Kyra Kyrklund, Steffen Peters and others is all part of Mary s vision to encourage Australian riders to push themselves towards the world stage. Recently home from training in Germany with her two current talents, Rio ride Boogie Woogie and Calanta, who won the grand prix in Deauville, France, and is Mary s hope for next year s World Equestrian Games in Tryon. Mary is leaving the riding at Boneo to her daughter Gitte who will be competing Mary s London Olympic ride Sancette. Another of Mary s grand prix stars, Umbro, now owned by Carol Haynes, will be partnered in the CDI-W by Masterclass presenter, Olympic Silver medallist Spencer Wilton. It is all part of the vision to expose the next generation of Australian riders to international competition, to encourage enquiring minds to watch, learn and embrace ideas so as to prepare and develop the talents who, with hard work and dedication, could take on the dressage world in years to come Martin Collins Australian Dressage Championships / Page 30 --

32 GLENN FRYER TRIBUTE I have known Glenn since I was in my teenage years. He was inspirational then to those of us who were beginning to get interested in this wonderful sport. His family hosted the legendary Franz Maringer at their lovely property in Berwick where I was fortunate enough to have lessons. Glenn spent some extensive time in Europe training with Bimbo Pielicke and later German Master Udo Lange with his lovely thoroughbred The Liberator. His hard work and dedication paid off when he was chosen to represent Australia at the WEG in Cedar Valley Canada in Over the years Glenn has taught and inspired many students. In more recent times he has been a very generous sponsor at our major competitions and is the owner of a number of talented Dressage horses competed by Brett Parbery. Mary Hanna Glenn Fryer s two big passions in life have been horses and property development and design. In his early equestrian days Glenn was more involved in jumping and hack riding as Dressage was not as popular in Australia as it is today. It was not until the year 1970 at the age of 20 Equestrian Australia brought Franz Marringer out from Austria that Glenn s passion for dressage was really ignited. Glenn s parents hosted Franz at their property The Lodge in Berwick, for several years to train Glenn and other young hopefuls such as Mary Hanna. Over the next three years Franz and Glenn trained Glenn s Palamino, El Donaire to Grand Prix. In this era of dressage in Australia, warmblood horses were not readily available. Prior to the Montreal Olympics Rosemary Springer came to Australia to train Olympic hopefuls and chose Glenn and El Donaire as a combination to represent Australia, however funding in that era was very limited and made the prospect prohibitive. Glenn began to raise funds for the sport, which continues on today. There were many fundraising dinners held at Glenn s home in the early days and in recent years at his property Longvue at Nar Nar Goon. In the 1970 s Glenn with many others, promoted the sport with events such as a Dressage exhibition on the Yarra River during the Moomba Festival Martin Collins Australian Dressage Championships / Page 31 --

33 In the early 1980 s Glenn purchased The Liberator an ex event horse from Bill Roycroft, which he trained to Grand Prix. The two then went to The United States to train with Mele Von Brugen in preparation for the 1984 LA Olympics. The horse was successful with good scores which enabled him to qualify, however the Australian Olympic Committee would not accept the qualification due to it being a day late. The two continued their journey together in Germany and trained with Bimbo Pielicke and Udo Lange resulting in selection for the 1986 World Championships in Canada. After the World Championships Glenn retired from competitive riding and he returned to his other passion of Property Development and Design. His passion for dressage continued through training others, two of whom went on to compete for Australia (Nancy French and Mathew Dowsley). Glenn s love for riding took him back to Germany where he purchased a young Floristan gelding Longvue Florencio (Ben) to train at home. Upon getting Ben to Inter I Glenn required surgery that prevented him from riding for a year. This resulted in the partnership with Brett Parbery who has had great success competing Longvue Florencio. This partnership now allows Glenn to continue to train the horses and Brett compete them and Glenn can focus on his preferred pastime of travelling. Glenn and his partner now reside at their beautiful home Longvue in Nar Nar Goon where he continues to train horses to Grand Prix, welcoming people for clinics and protocol days in a friendly and welcoming environment. He continues to support many riders progress through their careers and generously gives back to the sport through event sponsorship. Glenn is truly one of the unsung heroes of our sport and without Patrons like Glenn quietly supporting our events in the background, events like this would not be possible. There are many supporters of our sport that quietly continue to give. For some, this has meant years of savings, for others this is the dream horse that is going to take you all the way! If horses are your livelihood, purchasing a horse from Europe can also represent a significant business asset that will help you produce income for years to come. Whatever path your journey has taken, at some point each of us faces the daunting task of arranging for our prized possession to make it safely back home to Australia. Given the distance from Europe, travelling a horse safely to Australia is a huge risk none of us want to invest the time and money to find the perfect horse only for the process to stumble at the last hurdle when the future of your precious cargo is in the hands of someone else! So if you don t have a lot of knowledge of international horse transport, how can you compare the difference between quotes and carriers to use? Where can you find this information? Because when you ve come this far, a small difference in price really doesn t mean much when you re more interested in choosing the right carrier that will get your dream horse home safe and sound. 49 So, you ve finally made the bold move to travel to Europe As a nice touch - and to help ease your mind during what can often be an anxious time for new owners - you receive both photos and the weight of your horse both on arrival into quarantine in Europe and Australia! Upon leaving the quarantine facility in Germany it s just a 2- hour drive to the airport for the journey home. To my relief I learnt that IRT are the only carrier travelling to Australia that have their own vets travelling on board all flights with the horses, something that would have to be a major factor for most owners when choosing their carrier! In addition to the travelling vets, IRT also employ professional and certified grooms who act as liasons and a friendly face to escort your horse from start to finish on their journey home. Another thing I had never taken into account was the actual flight path of my horse on route back home and this is certainly an area I highly recommend researching with a prospective carrier I was amazed when I looked into the difference in routes between carriers, particularly the amount of time your horse can be left sitting on the tarmac waiting for their next connection! If flight paths and connection times aren t disclosed upfront by the carrier, you need to ask the question of them. In my research I discovered IRT also have the fastest service time from Amsterdam to Melbourne - 24 hours to be exact - and sometimes even less depending on the stop over. Another issue many people aren t aware of is the critical 14-day period for horses that land in Australia from Europe. It is during this time we hope like crazy the horse isn t displaying any signs of colic or travel sickness. But what if it did though? Not only do IRT have onboard travelling vets, they also have 24-hour night watchman during your horse s entire quarantine in Australia, giving you absolute peace of mind from start to finish in fact, I discovered IRT were the only carrier that offered this service in Australia! 51 My Horse is Flat what do I do? This is a common question we hear this time of year after we start to immerge from our winter hibernation and expect our horse to pick up from where we left them at the end of the season. Nutritional, Health, Management and Environmental factors all are interrelated to contribute to building your horse back to peak performance. We will briefly examine these topics to assist in getting your horse back on the right track. Nutrition In assessing whether your horse is flat because of nutrition we need to ascertain your horses current condition. Weight, height, condition score, work load, feeding intake and type, pasture type and geography and most importantly any changes in these factors are required to assist in determining what changes have occurred and what changes may assist in finding a solution. Typically we seek horses that are flat nutritionally are after a period of not exercising is that we have not matched our feed intake with your horses new workload or if you have increased the degree of intensity of the work you are asking your horse to perform at. An example would be that you have progressed your horse from Novice to Medium to Advance dressage training. Whilst you may be still riding your horse for the same period of time the energy your horse is exerting is quite different. In guidance with your nutritionist I would look to increase the energy content of the diet in line with the work and condition desired. This may mean simply the addition of grains or other carbohydrate or fat energy sources to the diet if the diet is already balanced on all other nutrients and you just required energy or slowly establishing a new diet in the correct ratios of nutrients to meet your horse new nutrient requirements. The addition of fats as an energy source is a really good option for gaining condition without affecting the glycaemic regulation of the body and also without affecting the horses nervous disposition. If we are looking at carbohydrates as an energy source they are digested in a different way to fats and may give your horse literally a sugar rush. If you are looking for this type of reaction for a performance, additional energy in the form of carbohydrates / starch such as grains will be a use full tool. Just remember not to overdo this as too much grain / starch in the diet will lead to gastric dysfunction such as colic, acidosis and potentially laminitis Martin Collins Australian Dressage Championships / Page 50 --
