In recognition of the growing opportunities for all milk producers, we are continuing to develop a wide choice of breeds and types within the Cogent stud, to provide the health, robustness and functionality so important to ease of management and efficiency. In our latest brochure, we are delighted we can offer 47 sires from 6 different breeds, as the Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, British Friesian, Guernsey, Montbeliarde, Shorthorn and Swedish Red all take their place. As with our more mainstream breeds, we work with the world s leading cattle genetics marketing organisation, World Wide Sires to source some of these bloodlines, while others originate from collaborations with breed societies as well as Cogent s own carefully procured UK stud. Sire stacks and the performance of cow families remain just as important as they do in the mainstream breeds and we don t waver from our principles of looking for deep cow families and exciting sire stacks which we believe will knit together. Together, we believe these sires can improve fertility, lower cell counts, improve feet and locomotion and increase longevity in many UK herds, and in doing so have the scope to improve profitability through better animal welfare and reduced veterinary bills. The Profitable Lifetime Index PLI is a within-breed genetic ranking index developed for UK dairying conditions and is expressed as a financial value. The PLI has been updated to reflect changes in the milk markets and the availability of more health and welfare information. The SCI has been specifically created for spring block calving systems which place a heavy reliance on grazed grass. For autumn calving herds we recommend using the PLI. Production 29.3% Genetic base change Every five years, the national genetic average for every trait is recalculated and reset to zero to account for the genetic progress made. In August 2014 the base has been reset for Milk, Fat Kgs, Protein Kgs, Fat & Protein % SCC, Lifespan and fertility Index. The genetic base for all breeds is reset to the average genetic merit of cows born in 2010, and the changes compared to the previous base. When there is a base change, there will be a noticeable change in PTA values across the board, although the base change itself causes no change in ranking.
