It won t be long before the mud dries up and the rain, snow and cold is a memory. The 2013 show season has already begun. Good luck to those attending Scottsdale and congratulations on your participation in this great event and on awards earned there. Your club officers, board members and show committee have been hard at work for months on plans for last weekend s 2012 awards banquet and on the 2013 NCAHA sponsored shows. Special thanks to Kathy Villanova for the lovely decorations at our 2012 Awards Banquet and to her helpers Ellen Deal, Krystal and John Villanova. Everyone who attended enjoyed the excellent steak and chicken dinner with all the trimmings and an array of wonderful treats provided by attendees for dessert. There was a table full of interesting and useful door prizes, including free stalls for the April and June shows in Raleigh. The Awards Committee (Jessica and Sheree Crutchfield and Jackie Stott) tell us that the number of members participating in this year s awards by submitting points was the highest ever. They did an excellent job of selecting and presenting the 2012 awards. Everyone who submitted points either won an award or received a NCAHA t-shirt in recognition of their achievements. Medal awards this year were recognized by useful tail bags with the NCAHA logo. Other high point winners received an array of nice items including gear bags, plaques, and statues. Before listing all the special medal and open and rated show winners, we d like to recognize our special club awards for 2012: From a large group of deserving nominees, the 2012 Youth Sportsmanship Award winner was, a relatively new but impressive youth exhibitor and advocate for encouraging other youth participation in our Arabian shows. Sydney competes primarily in the sport horse division with multiple horses and in several disciplines, She is highly thought of by her peers and is always ready and willing to help anyone any time. The 2012 Noody Award, recognizing overall contributions to NCAHA and active promotion of the Arabian breed and our club, went to Liz Lawrence. Liz and her husband breed and

2 show sport horses in under saddle and in-hand and have fostered the growth of sport horse competition as well as mentoring and providing mounts to a number of junior exhibitors. The 2012 Deal Senior Award, the winner chosen each year by Ellen Deal from NCAHA members 55 and over who actively compete with their horses, was presented to Charles Daniel Charles shows his Half-Arabian gelding, Vido Barbarino, in halter and under saddle. 15 Adult Amateur Jennifer Jeffreys-Chen Overall High Point Horse ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our third annual joint NCAHA/ODAHA Dual Regional Qualifier will be held April 5-7, 2013, in Raleigh. The prize list is out; we have a new format this year, partly as consequence of the Western Carolinas Show running on our same dates. We hope to exceed 2012 s over 200 horses participating and around 350 stalls rented! The quality of the horses last year was excellent; and our numbers in the western, hunter and most English and Country English classes were up. We hope to exceed these gains in We also hope to have a good turnout for hunter over fences classes and an exceptional turnout for sport horses again this year. Our 2012 show was one of the highest rated in the USEF best show competition on voting from exhibitors; help us do it again! Exhibitors will again enjoy free subs and chips on Friday and snacks in the show office all weekend as well as a great Legion of Honor parties and several youth activities. If you would like to plan a presentation party for your horse or rider, we welcome your participation and the Party Barn is available as well as assistance with special stall arrangements. Contact Rory Meacham if you need to plan an event or pick a time for a presentation. Our special thanks goes to Jackie Daughton for all of her assistance with the NCAHA youth progams and in planning for youth events at the April 5-7 show. Jackie will coordinate with the ODAHA youth advisor. If you have suggestions for activities, please contact Jackie. Don t forget our NCAHA upcoming two-day open show, the annual NCAHA Summer Extravaganza, to be held at the Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh on Saturday and Sunday, June 8 and June 9. This is an all-breed show with 50+ classes each day. We have two excellent judges, Derek Bomberger on Saturday and Lisa Smarsh on Sunday. A class list will soobn be available for the open show. Look for it on the web soon and after the April show in an blast. We will be seeking and accepting sponsors for all of our 50+ classes. Stalls will rent for $50 for one day or for the weekend. Please come join us for fun and multi-breed competition. We need volunteers to help with virtually everything from the office to announcing and ring mastering. If you have a skill to offer and don t want or unable to show, please call Myra Daniel, Rory Meacham or Sue Gray and offer your help!

16 Volunteers will be very much in demand as we will also hold an AHA-approved 1-day Sport Horse Show (Sat. June 8 with Margaret Little judging) and an Arabian Horse Association approved dressage show (Sun. June 9, Tami Batts judging) that same weekend on the Hunt Complex show grounds! The AHA 1-day shows are fully qualifying shows for Region 12, East Coast Championships, Sport Horse Nationals and AHA awards for horses and exhibitors. Prize list for the open show is attached and the prize list for the AHA 1-day sport horse and dressage shows is awaiting official approval from AHA and should be available in the office at the April 5-7 show. We hope to be able to split classes into dressage type and hunter type for both some undersaddle and in-hand classes. As soon as we have official AHA approval of our proposed class list, it will be posted at Mark your calendars now and plan to attend. You won t have to travel out of state to qualify for sport horse! If you are not familiar with the AHA One-Day Shows which made their debut in 2011, these shows are fully AHA approved and earn AHA qualifying points for the region in which they are held as well as for East Coast, Youth, US & Canadian and Sport Horse National Championship shows. Points are also awarded toward AHA awards (Legion & Rider of Honor, Supreme, Excellence, etc.). The 1-day show is a less expensive venue for exhibitors because of its format stalls are not required (but are available if you wish one), and USEF fees, memberships and approval are not required. You can read about these shows on the AHA web site. If you don t want to travel long distances to qualify your horse or rider for a regional or national show or just wish to get experience and ring time for a new horse/rider under qualified AHA judges but in a relaxed atmosphere with reduced fees, these shows may be just want you want! Dressage and sport horse classes were just approved to be added to the one-day show format by the AHA Board of Directors last March. In was the first club in the SE to offer dressage and sport horse in this format. The sport horse and dressage shows will be held in rings behind barn D & E at the Hunt Complex. Our sport horse and dressage exhibitors & members asked for another show in Raleigh and 2012 was a success so we are repeating for NCAHA is providing a low cost alternative to traveling out of state to show. All classes will have lower entry fees than the standard sport horse and dressage shows. You will not be able to beat this experience from an economic standpoint! Dressage and sport horse exhibitors PLEASE come and support these shows. We need your active participation to continue to make the 1-day shows possible. We also need volunteer help: scribes for both shows, announcers & ringmaster for Saturday sport horse show, and paddock/gate help both days. If you wish to volunteer for any of the need positions or in other ways such as sponsorships, get in touch with Myra Daniel, Rory Meacham or Kim Poston. As an added incentive to exhibitors, points earned at these two shows will count as DOUBLE POINTS for 2013 NCAHA Year-End Awards. While we cannot post the class lists and entry forms until AHA approval comes, if you d like to see the draft class list for either show, please contact Myra by at mmydan@embarqmail.com. NCAHA is one of the few Arabian clubs still offering a FREE awards program to our members. This year, 2013, please continue to keep your points on the form available on our web page and participate by entering the high point competition. Forms for 2013 will be up on the web site soon and will be due December 1 st. Dates for the 2013 NC State Fair Arabian Show are Friday, October 25 th (Main Ring classes) and Saturday, October 26 th (Sport Horse Under Saddle and In-Hand). Please watch for details from the NC State Fair in mid summer. The prize list for the fair is usually on line by August. Our Arabian classes will run during the day on 10/25 and 10/26 and be

17 finished before dark--- so NO FIREWORKS if you come in just for the day! Sport horse classes will be run in the ring below Barn E where footing is in process of being improved. We are very excited that due to the hard work and support of many people the State Fair has agreed to offer sport horse under saddle and in-hand classes again this year. An open horse show will also be running classes on Saturday, 10/26 in the main indoor arena, which will our members are encouraged to participate in. All exhibitors will receive parking and fair passes. Finally, don t forget the NCAHA Youth Charity Benefit show to be held at on October 5 th. More information on this show will be available soon. If your membership is about to expire, you can renewal your membership either on line or through our through membership secretary, Jackie Stott.
