7 DDC Driving Lines Page 7 Coming Full Circle Back to My Draft Horse Roots by Frances Baker Cold January day driving our new Pioneer Work Sled with my groom, Carla Schirmer, and Cooter & Rickie While searching for the perfect way to condition horses for hills and coaching Wayne and I bought our first pair of horses at Martin's Auction some 10 years ago from Paul and Karen Martin. We knew the horses were cross bred Hackney Clydesdales. They had long manes and feathers so we assumed they were draft horses and the DDC Draft Horse Members welcomed us with open arms...advising us where to buy big everything. Like big halters, big shoes, big blankets. George Parris came up and showed us how to hook the pair up. Now at this point, I must tell you that I only knew enough to be extremely dangerous. It is always wise to consult with an equine professional. George was very kind and showed us how to get started and thought we had a nice pair of mares. He said they were more Clydesdale than Hackney and we assumed that was a good thing. Those two mares, Jam and Jelly had been many places and they took us back to their roots...the Devon Horse Show. We didn't know it at the time but they had competed there before. The Devon Show was one of the first places we took them as they had a comercial marathon class for draft horses and we entered. We made up a theme as a flower vendor...thinking red and white geraniums would look fabulous with their bay coats and big white faces and stockings. They looked so good that we were chosen to be the poster for the Devon Horse Show the following year. We didn't win the draft class, but we thought we looked cute lined up beside Sandy Lerner's big shires for Ayshire Farm in Upperville, VA and a six horse Percheron Hitch pulling a stage coach. The best part was the spectators yelled "where's the bud light?" So we assumed that even the spectators knew we were little draft horses. So we started looking for other draft horse classes we could do and couldn't really find anything close by. Meanwhile, the DDC had a beginning driving clinic with Lore Homer and we attended. Lore told me, among other things, that the horses were not draft horses, they were carriage horses. We didn't know the difference we liked playing with the other draft horses. But the feathers were starting to cause problems (scratches) so I clipped them off and pulled the mane to match. Jam and Jelly were still big but they no longer looked like draft horses. The rest is truly amazing as to where those horses took us. We have been to so many nice places, with the DDC and with others. Story continues on p. 9.

9 Page 9 DDC Driving Lines To name a few we went to Fair Hill and camped out with the DDC, then we went back a couple of other times with the ADS for their week end, we went to the CAA's conference in Shelburne, Vermont. Then we decided if two was fun four had to be twice as much fun. So that adventure took us to Southern Pines, NC for some training. We have been very blessed to have had such nice horses, but remember I told you that I only know enough to be extremely dangerous. I am very aware of that. Our most recent adventures have taken us twice to Massachusetts on two different coaching drives. Now we found our flatland horses pulling a heavy coach in rather hilly country for three days in a row. So I asked many people how do you condition for hills when you don't have any hills. Delaware is flat as a pan cake. Chris Higgins, who was John Seabrook's coachman for 20 some years said he once got John's horses fit by plowing a field. Imagine that an English Coachman plowing a field. Chris said the good thing about that was not only did the horses get fit but they were very glad to stand at the end of the row. EVENT COORDINATORS AND HOSTS Have you been keeping track of those hours for those fabulous volunteers who have been helping you this year? Please submit this information to Martha MacDonald, our DDC Secretary at armadale98@comcast.net Or call The breeder who raised all our horses suggested a simple Amish work sled...pulled in snow when you have it and dirt trails when you don't. Resistance is resistance. As you can see from the photo the sled pulls easily in the snow. The horses will have to be more fit to pull it in the dirt trails at our farm. Nice thing too is there is room in the back to add tractor weights for more weight when the horses get fit enough. And if this works Pioneer makes a six horse plow... wow six horses at one time. Just kidding really. I just thought it was cool to find a down home on the farm way to make my horses fit enough to pull a coach. We'll give you a progress report as we go along.
